Okay now. It seems like the in-vogue draft idea is that the Denver Broncos may trade their first round pick with the New York Giants. In other words, people are saying that the Broncos are NOT going to pick WR Dez Bryant, and he would be available at no. 21, which is the Bengals’ spot. Don Banks of Si.com inexplicably thinks that the Bengals would take TE Jermaine Gresham over Dez Bryant, and I think he would be more wrong than a Catholic priest hosting a five-year-old’s birthday party at Chuck E Cheese’s.
So if by some fortuitous chance of events the Bengals get Dez Bryant, why not dream big? The third-rated safety on most people’s boards is Taylor Mays. There is a chance that Mays may drop out of the first round. If that happens and I’m the Bengals, I’d be on the phone like stink on a monkey’s butt, calling all the teams in the top ten of round two to see what it would take to trade up and get Mays. I would think we could trade a 4th rounder and a 7th rounder to move up. I mean, the Bengals have four picks in rounds 3 and 4, so I don’t see how we couldn’t offer a nice package to a team that needs additional picks.
Is this likely to happen? Probably not. But a guy can dream.
And THEN you have the third round, and people have been talking about how it’s possible that Ron Gronkowski, the second-rated TE of the draft, could drop to the third round because of his health history. If this happens, and I’m the Bengals, why not try to trade up again? Of course, there is another TE that could be available in the third round, Aaron Hernandez from Florida, and he’s the third-rated TE.
So this is my ultimate, I-don’t-think-this-could-really-happen-but-if-it-does-I’d-mess-my-pants, 3-round draft for the Bengals:
1. Dez Bryant, WR
2. Taylor Mays, FS
3. Ron Gronkowski/Aaron Hernandez, TE
Oh man, I think I peed my pants. That would be awesome. Too bad it probably won’t happen. A man can dream, can’t he?
