Jamar Wall of Texas Tech

He was a corner in college, but could conceivably play Safety. Without question very physical, which I would like to see in the secondary. Check out these hits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayvExJ2Tn1c and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtnTZK_mLWc

we will

get a safety. Probably not until Round 6 though.

Look for Dan Lefevour… just saying.

But my sources were off the wall wrong this time, got the positions right, just not the right players.

uuuh yeah I write for the Cincinnati Enquirer. Thanks?

Solid

Those 4 players are all people that can be used effetively this season and will probably all get playing time in the first game of the season. You guys got better by filling in the gaps. Congrats, you guys are no longer filling needs and can start to build upon a solid foundation. You’ve come a long way baby.

by einman77 on Apr 23, 2010 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

I do not

like the Ghee pick at all. I personally think there are 4 corners better than him. Ghee has 33 starts 1 INT. That’s bad.

Ghee has all the tools. He needs good coaching and Zimmer will see that he gets it.

I think he will be solid – next year. Most of his negatives are in his technique and that can be fixed.

The rest of the way

Nothing but Defense, athletic and nasty. If we go Offense again, then QB Mike Kafka of Northwestern as backup to Carson. That would be a sound pick, but other than that, they need to focus on Defense from here on out.

by justRick on Apr 23, 2010 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

Another QB

Dan LeFevour, as well, would be a good backup pick for Carson. Other than possibly Kafka & LeFevour, for tomorrow… DEFENSE

mostly, but...

we still could use that guard.

GRESHAM AND DUNLAP......I AM NOT THAT HIGH ON THEM....BUT I CAN SEE

WHY THE ORGANZATION picked them. The (2) third rd pics are completely diffrent. With the 1st pick in the 3rd should have been spent on a safety i thought. With TE being so deep this year…the 21st pick should have been spent on Taylor Mays and there is no way in hell you can tell me that Shipley is better than Mardy Gillyard. This kid was very open about himself wanting to be a Bengal and the Bengals chose to pick the slower, injury prone receiver who will likely be a 5th or 6th receiver on the team. Shipley ran a 4.60 40 yd dash and has missed 2 full years at Texas due to injury. Gresham is also injury prone. Aaron Hernandez is still on the board and he was the best TE in college last year. I fill that the Bengals have completely missed on this years draft…God help us Bengal fans.

Kenneth Lewis Moore

by lightskin350 on Apr 24, 2010 12:18 AM EDT reply actions

Hernandez is Coffman v2.0. He’s never played inline, can’t block, was used as a slot guy. He’s a developmental project. Gresham is a complete package that will contribute right away.

As for Shipley, I’d say he’s far more polished than Gilyard. He’s a better route runner. He has better hands. He’s probably better suited for the slot.

Mays, as we saw, tumbled deep into the second round. He would have been a terrible reach at 21.

by jsl413 on Apr 24, 2010 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Mays would have been awful.

Shipley doesn’t need massive amounts of speed. He’s an underneath slot receiver who would be used similar to how TJ was used when he was around or Welker is used in NE. He fits that spot and he helps us now.

I like Gilyard and I do wish we got him but I couldn’t see Gilyard being as helpful to us as Shipley is this year. Remember what our schedule is. The Bengals are drafting to a system. They’re drafting players that fit what they want to do. This is good. And finally, he’s not injury prone. He has played every game over the last 3 years. Just because he had some issues 4 years ago doesn’t mean anything.

by Mexal on Apr 24, 2010 7:02 AM EDT up reply actions

This is rare. I don't agree with anything you said

BTW Shipley ran a 4.5 40 at his pro day and he catches everything and holds onto it. Marty ran a 4.6 40 and didn’t improve it on his pro day. Gilyard is slower than Shipley who is taller and 10 pounds heavier. Hernandez is still on the boards for a reason. He can’t block at all!

I also am not as high on Dunlop as some but it is his technique the people question. I trust Zimmer to straightn that out.

This is an A draft.

is he worth a late 3rd round draft choice? was there a better CB on the board right there? Mardy Gilyard still out there? I just got back from florida so I have only caught bits and pieces of the draft on the radio, Ill be here for hopefully a live open thread for the last day of the draft

CB85......Collaros for Heisman

by TennBengalfan on Apr 24, 2010 1:21 AM EDT reply actions

NFL.com says he isnt talented enough to start as a rookie, you figure you would find a guy in the 3rd that could start at nickel (Trevard Lindley in the 4th or 5th?)
Ghee has good size and excellent speed for the position. He has the quickness and burst to be a solid coverage defender but lacks the foot agility, pad level and body positioning to be consistent in this area. Ghee has long arms and flashes the ability to jam and re-route receivers off the line of scrimmage but lets receivers get too much separation downfield too often. He is a willing run support defender but isn’t physical enough to make plays on larger ball carriers and receivers. Ghee needs to be more physical warding off blockers as well as wrapping up when tackling. Ghee has been a durable productive cornerback that has the size and athleticism to be a contributor at the next level but isn’t talented enough to impact a club as a rookie.

Hobson like him:

With the selection of Wake Forest cornerback Brandon Ghee with the 96th pick near the end of Thursday night’s third round, the Bengals got one of the most athletic and fastest corners on the board."There are safeties still out there," Coyle said

by UpStateMike on Apr 24, 2010 7:51 AM EDT up reply actions

There are several factors here

Ghee has everything you can’t coach and all of his negatives are things you can coach. If you need a guy this year he ain’t it. If you are looking for someone who can be very good next year and for the next 5 years he is a good pick. So you can take a guy with a lower high end to start now or go for a guy with a higher high end you you have the luxury to develop. They made the right choice.

More on Ghee from CBS Sports
Blessed with the prototypical blend of size and straight-line speed, Ghee looks the part of a high-round selection despite having never earned all-conference honors in three seasons as a starting cornerback for the Demon Deacons.

The athletically gifted Ghee has been impressive in high profile matchups with big receivers, but struggled against smaller, quicker wideouts. More interested in applying the big hit than the interception, some scouts feel his pro best position will be safety. There is merit there, considering his production as a tackler (154 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss) and lack of big plays generated when in coverage (one interception out of 26 passes defensed).
Read & React: Marginal read-and-react skills. Aggressive making plays on the ball, but too often doesn’t make the play when it appears he should. Better hitter than pass defender to this point.

Man Coverage: Looks the part and has good straight-line speed. Good agility and balance in coverage. Can flip his hips and run with receivers, though his long legs are not conducive to his breaking quickly and truly mirroring receivers. Has the speed to recover, but can be beaten by sharp routes. Not yet the sum of his parts. Faster than he is quick and will give up too much cushion, too often allowing the reception rather than going for the pass breakup.

Zone Coverage: Has the IQ, speed and reliable tackling ability to be a fine zone coverage defender. Too late reacting to the play. Prefers to go for the big hit rather than making an attempt on the ball for the interception. Physical defender who is aggressive in his hand punch at the line of scrimmage and isn’t afraid to battle with receivers throughout the route.

Closing/Recovery: Good lateral agility and has an explosive burst to close when needed. Competes as the ball arrives and has the long arms and quick hands to knock passes away before a receiver can secure it. Times his leaps well to compete against bigger receivers. True defensive back hands but has only one interception in 34 starts (25 passes broken up).

Run Support: Aggressive in run support. Quickly gets through receiver blocks and is willing to stick his head into the action with the big boys on his way to the runner. Good open-field hitter who flashes heavy-hitting ability.

Tackling: Big hitter who times his hits well. Lowers his shoulder into the ballcarrier and can jar the ball loose. Can improve wrapping up as a tackler, as NFL receivers will be better able to absorb hits and keep their feet.

Intangibles: Struggled amid high expectations as a senior. Missed the 2007 season serving an academic suspension. Missed the 2009 spring practice after suffering a sprained knee on the first day. Missed two games in ’09 due to a sprained ankle.

NFL Comparison: Vontae Davis, Dolphins

Entering 2009: Ghee is expected to fill a leadership and playmaking void with 2008 stars Aaron Curry and Alphonso Smith in the NFL. He suffered a sprained knee during the first spring practice session and missed the remainder of the spring season.

Ghee finished third on the team in total tackles with 56, with 2.5 tackles for loss, 8 pass breakups and 0 interceptions in 2009.

So maybe Zim earmarked him for Safety and not Corner for Bengals

That sounds very plausible to me. A hard hitter that has most likely better speed and coverage skills than Mays and others. Hmm.

by UpStateMike on Apr 24, 2010 7:55 AM EDT up reply actions

40 time 4.45 bench 15 reps vertical 37.0 broad 10'07

After a couple of years on the sidelines — one as a redshirt and the other for academic reasons — Brandon Ghee quickly turned into an important part of the Wake Forest secondary. During his sophomore campaign he started the final ten games of the season and totaled 56 tackles, ranking fourth on the team. He got better as the season went on, which set the table for a great junior campaign in 2008. Ghee got tested a lot as the opposition tried to avoid fellow Demon Deacon corner Alphonso Smith and he really made the most of his opportunities. His tackle numbers were not that great, but Ghee did get an interception and forced four fumbles.
Ghee is getting more involved in the tackling during the 2009 campaign, despite missing the entire spring with a sprained knee. Through nine games, he ranks third on the team with 40 tackles. He has yet to record an interception this season, but he has broken up six pass attempts and is emerging as a solid cover corner.

Ghee will not be one of the first corners off the board, but he could turn into a solid cornerback in the NFL in time. Unless he has a great senior week and a nice showing at the NFL Combine, Ghee will likely be a mid-round selection.

2/1 Update: Ghee was moving down draft boards, but he had a decent week in practice during Senior Week. He was not too involved during the Senior Bowl Game itself, but it is at practice where coaches and scouts get to really know the players. Ghee probably played himself up into the third round and could end up being one of the better corners in this class behind Joe Haden, Patrick Robinson and Devin McCourty (which would easily put him in the second round).

4/5 Update: Ghee’s game tape still does not live up to his impressive performances in the workouts. He was one of the best corners at the NFL Combine and he followed that up with a great pro day at Wake Forest. His workouts have moved him up to a solid second round selection, but he struggles more than he should when the pads are on. That will slide him down some draft boards, but a team that likes his speed and agility will take him in the second round.

Summary: Ghee has some fixable attributes to his game, but he is a high upside player, and will likely be a better pro than college player. If he is impressive at the Senior Bowl and in workouts, it wouldn’t shock me if he is a first-round draft pick. Ghee has some intriguing physical tools to work with and can match up against the bigger receivers in the league. I love athletic, confident corners, but there is no doubt Ghee needs to be more polished at the next level.

Player Comparison: Jonathan Joseph. Joseph, like Ghee, has the same size and athleticism coming out of college, but he was also a little raw. Now, he is one of the better corners in the AFC.

Ghee has the ability to be the nickel back or become a FS.

He’ll need to be coached, but Jones and Trent are on the roster for a reason. He can cover decently well even if he can’t catch. IMO best case projection is something around Ike Taylor.

by jsl413 on Apr 24, 2010 2:43 AM EDT up reply actions

The Bengals explored moving up to take Mays, but wanted to make sure they didn’t give up too many picks and they ended up getting a player that meets the pass-rush need.

Mockingthedraft.com thoughts on Brandon Ghee
Agility/Hips: Ghee’s hips are incredibly fluid and he can turn in an instant. He’ll lose a step, though, because he’s so high cut. His feet aren’t as quick as his hips and he loses a step.

Ball Skills: Hands are poor. Only registered on interception during his career. Ghee did manage to break up 25 passes during his career and is more of a knock away defender.

Instincts: Shows much better recognition skills in zone coverage than in man coverage. In zone he does a really nice job of reading the quarterback. In man, though, he gets beaten too often by double moves and fakes.

Man coverage: Against bigger receivers, Ghee shows a lot of toughness. He actually matches up much better against bigger receiver that are slow than smaller quick receivers. Has long arms that he extends all the way to am at the line.

Pursuit: Ghee’s recovery speed is very good. In the times he gets beat by shifty receivers, he can make up for it with his speed. Has a good burst to close.

Size: Has solid size for the position and is just under six feet tall. Has good bulk with long arms.

Speed: Has good speed and burst. Clocked in officially with a 4.45 40-yard dash time at the combine. Will struggle to get up to speed quickly when he has to change direction.

Tackling/Run Support: Shows average tackling ability for a cornerback. Needs to become more fundamentally sound as a tackler. Likes to be an aggressive hitter. Willing and able to help in run coverage.

Zone coverage: Ghee can get too tall in his backpedal which hurts his turning ability. Likes to give up a big cushion so he can break on the ball. This will often get him in trouble when a receiver works underneath. But Ghee can read a quarterback nicely and against less-athletic receivers he’s very good in zone.

Final word: Ghee was a three-year starter for Wake Forest and at times looks like a very good cornerback. But at other times he looks more like a safety. It’s this kind of inconsistency that drops Ghee’s stock some

Maybe.

I wouldn’t really expect it until 5.

by jsl413 on Apr 24, 2010 3:28 AM EDT up reply actions

There's some merit in the argument that Bryan was a better pick.

But, what I find to be compelling is the idea that Gresham is the best pass-catcher in this draft, period. He just so happens to be a tight end, and fit a sore Bengal need.

by jsl413 on Apr 24, 2010 3:31 AM EDT up reply actions

He's quite a bit different from Coffman.

And I don’t think defenses will know who to cover with Bryant, Coffman, Gresham, Ocho, and B. Scott all on the field at once. Someone’s gonna make some yards in that situation – someone will have a mis-match.

The difference though is that Gresham is coming out as a decent blocker. TE Coach Hays says he’s already a better blocker than Dallas Clark. The guy’s got the motor and effort to block, just needs some technique.

by jsl413 on Apr 24, 2010 3:35 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, but only if

we get better in pass-blocking. And so far, we have not addressed the gaping hole need for quality O-line, esp. at OG.

by UpStateMike on Apr 24, 2010 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I think gaping hole is a bit of an overstatement

The Oline last year only had 1 guy in the same position he played before. Andre will have a full summer and TC to get to form. We drafted his for a reason – a very good one. Yea we need another big time guard but with another year together they should improve a lot. They had a B- Oline last year and I think we get to B+ this year. I hear the Jets are shopping Fanica. That would make us a solid A.

I think Frostee might be done. On the same token, Dunlap, like Fanene, can play DT/DE on pass rushing downs.

If they kept everyone, that’d be 6 DE and 3 DT.

It was like watching “Rudy”, waiting for him to get picked, his fancy suit a little rumpled from sitting in the green room through most of the first three rounds of the draft, Roger Goodell, on overtime, waiting it out with Ghee because he’s a commissioner with a heart of gold. I wonder who told him it would be a good idea to be there in person- and if he is now going to bitchslap that person? I’m sensing an Afterschool Special here- and Brandon Ghee coming to camp with a huge chip on his shoulder.
