I'm especially happy with the top 2 picks

These guys are both Top 5 prospects at there position’s

agree w/the B+

I’d like to have seen a safety like Kurt Coleman instead of both of those OL (especially the Otis pick). All in all though, we filled a need in 4/5 positions and added quality depth.

by jbs62 on Apr 24, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I will give them a B

I am not a fan of the Mulkelroy or Stephens pick.

I like Gresham, Ghee and Atkins.

Dunlop and Briscoe can make or break this draft.

Hudson is the prototype for a Bengals back-up interior lineman (see Keift, Koostra)

Shipley doesn’t thrill me, I would have preferred a safety there.

by jim0ijk on Apr 24, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Shipley doesn't thill you??

Now I’m not saying that he is the next Wes Walker, but watch tape of this guy. He understands the slot like few coming out of college. He knows how to find the seam, uses his downfield blockers incredibly well. He may not be blazing fast but is super quick and displays great body control.

by Marc57 on Apr 24, 2010 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I later looked at some draft profile that rave about his patterns and quickness. I am not disappointed, but a bit nonplussed. There were safeties available that I liked better than the Bengals did, and the Bengals thought that slot reciever was more of a need than I did, I thought Quan was beginning to develop there late in the season.

I could also be bitter about 09 (Go Bucks)

by jim0ijk on Apr 24, 2010 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I noticed from the video that he made nice adjustments to the ball, always seemed to know where the 1st down marker was, and found the soft spots in zone coverage. Could be another TJ.

by jim0ijk on Apr 24, 2010 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

Exactly. Shipley will be huge on 3rd downs and over the middle. Much like Tj.

by C1ncy4Life on Apr 28, 2010 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Shipley

He will be a fan favorite by week 4. I’ve been saying it in all the Posts. He fits what we were missing on Offense, perfectly. His impact will be felt far deeper than the numbers he will put up. His hard work will rub off on the other young Wide Outs. Also having a viable option to go over the middle will force D’s to not roll a safety over to Ochocinco. This could be huge. He will also be huge on 3rd downs, IMO. Carson will lean on Shipley almost immediately. He will win the slot role out of Training Camp. In a lot of ways Shipley could be our best pick this draft.

by C1ncy4Life on Apr 28, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Looking at that list

Gresham and Dunlap will be given jobs (and the Bengals will probably ditch one of the other DEs after 2010)
Shipley will make the roster no matter what (see Simpson, Jerome)
Ghee will fight for some playing time no matter what (like last year’s sixth rounder)
Atkins will make the rotation (and they can ditch one of the other guys after 2010)
Hudson will be on the practice squad in 2010 and maybe 2011 as well.
The other guys will be cut.
That is all. At best, you got two future starters.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Apr 24, 2010 4:49 PM EDT reply actions

The 6th rd WR, Briscoe, will have a chance to make the team too.

Shipley is a future slot. Ghee could be a future FS, at worst is a future 4th CB. Gresham is the TE for years to come. Dunlap will be a pass rusher. Atkins is a pass rusher.

They didn’t NEED to draft starters in this draft. Where they needed players, they got them. Pass rush? Check. Carson Palmer’s weapons? Check. Future offensive line prospects to develop while you have Bobbie Williams? Check.

by jsl413 on Apr 24, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

By the way Atkins

said he neither talked to the Bengals or worked out for them. So they went with that pick that will cost them at a minimum around one million dollars over the life of his first deal… based on a piece of paper handed them with the guy’s stats and workout numbers.

Nice scouting department there.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Apr 24, 2010 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

When you get into the middle and late rounds, most players haven't talked to teams.

They obviously watched a ton of film on him. Don’t come down on the scouting department until he plays.

by jsl413 on Apr 24, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

It would be funny to see what everyone said

on glorious previous Bengals draft days like the year 1999 or 2000.

I bet most of the koolaid drinkers thought those were great drafts too, or at least B+.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Apr 24, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

You're just reaching for things to complain about.

Whining about drafting guys they didn’t talk to when that’s the case with the majority of any team’s mid-round picks, comparing Shipley to Simpson (care to elaborate?), and comparing this year’s draft to draft’s of a decade ago?
Get a hold of yourself man. This was a very solid draft, which by the way is pretty consistent with how the past few years have gone.

by Jaegner on Apr 24, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Something else to remember

Some of that could be the players around them and the coaching staff that was supposed to “coach them up”. Everything can’t be placed on the players. Especially in that ‘Era’

by C1ncy4Life on Apr 28, 2010 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

B-

Didn’t really address safety (convert time) and OL. The last three pics are mediocre at best.

by UpStateMike on Apr 24, 2010 4:53 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Briscoe

is a high risk high reward guy. If he pans out and doesn’t become a character issue, he could be the Bengals best pick since TJ.

by jim0ijk on Apr 24, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't even call it high-risk.

Dude’s a 6th round pick, if his character becomes a liability they can cut him because they don’t have much invested in him.

by Jaegner on Apr 24, 2010 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

More high risk off the field. Our rep has improved a bit recently, and I like it there.

by jim0ijk on Apr 24, 2010 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

High risk does not=6th round pick.

But I agree with what you are saying. Just wanted to add that.

by C1ncy4Life on Apr 28, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Donovan Warren and Barry Church

Good candidates for UDFA and you would have to think that both of these players are looking at the Bengals as a team who needs to at least bring in a safety for depth.

by Just Chris on Apr 24, 2010 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

Draft did it's job

Bye, bye…
Daniel Coats
JP Foschi (not being resigned, presumably)
Jerome Simpson
Jason Shirley

Last three picks are practice squad candidates – with cover for Bobbie Williams. Strength in depth. Lewis has done a brilliant job overhauling the roster in the past two seasons.

The challenge now is to get Hall and JJo resigned!

Rookie free agents priorities: K, FB, S, RB?

by wiseking on Apr 24, 2010 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

They already have Raynor and Nugent, don’t think they are bringing in another kicker. Safety definitely has to be the RFA prioirty.

by jim0ijk on Apr 24, 2010 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Nugent

Don’t discount Nugent. He had a HUGE leg in college and had an injury his last year with the Jets. If he is healthy he may be exactly what we are looking for. I mean he was a stud out of College. Didn’t play bad for the Jets the first few years. Sometimes with Kickers it takes a few years and a change of scenery. Think Neil Rackers.

by C1ncy4Life on Apr 28, 2010 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

ESPN

Had the Bengals as one of the three winners of the draft (Seattle and Baltimore). I’ll take that. Pretty solid through the first four rounds—which are the only rounds that seem to have impact players regularly. Though they didn’t take a safety like I wanted them to, I like what they did overall.

by Anthony Cosenza on Apr 24, 2010 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

The "mistake"

…was not trading up for Mays.

Hindsight’s a great thing. Deep draft and six solid-looking picks from the first four rounds.

by wiseking on Apr 24, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

On TV?

Don’t see it online.

by jsl413 on Apr 24, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, after the draft they went over

the teams that had the best drafts, and the Bengals were mentioned.

by Jaegner on Apr 24, 2010 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

They maybe didn't take a Safety

Its thought that Ghee may be the FS. He has the frame and definitely the speed and cover skills to be a great Coverage Ballhawking Safety. At 6’ 192 he has the size and could very easily had a few pounds of muscle to his frame. There is talk they may look at him at Safety.

by C1ncy4Life on Apr 28, 2010 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus

Ghee played some Safety in college. He also mentioned that in his very first interview after being drafted.

by C1ncy4Life on Apr 28, 2010 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice Draft

but should have taken one of the safeties in the last 2 rounds. Rolle will be a player.

by featherman on Apr 24, 2010 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Don’t understand the Stephens pick when we need safety depth.

by jim0ijk on Apr 24, 2010 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

We will pick a safety

In the 1st round of the 2011 draft.
