Bengals Draft Compared With Best Available Player per Mock Drafts

I was fairly happy with the Bengals draft since they got quite a few players that were projected to be gone when they picked.  The best value picks seemed to be Dez Briscoe (picked 191 but projected as pick 150), Geno Atkins (picked 120 but projected as pick 105) and Brandon Ghee (picked 96 but projected as pick 75).  Most of the other players picked seemed to be close to the top rated player remaining on the board at the position the Bengals picked with the exception of Otis Hudson, Reggie Stephens and Jordan Shipley.

I reviewed various mock drafts and below is how the Bengals draft would have looked if the Bengals simply took the best available player based on the mock draft projections:

Pick 21 - Bryan Bulaga (OT), Dez Bryant (WR) or Dan Williams (DT)

Pick 54 - Golden Tate (WR), Terrance Cody (DT) or Charles Brown (OT)

Pick 84 - Colt McCoy (QB) or Navorro Bowman (OLB)

Pick 96 - Everson Griffen (DE), Bruce Campbell (OT), Mardy Gilyard (WR) or Aaron Hernandez (TE)

Pick 120 - Ricky Sapp (OLB) or Geno Atkins (DT)

Pick 131 - Dominique Franks (CB) or Cam Thomas (DT)

Pick 152 - Jonathon Dwyer (RB), Reshad Jones (SS) or Carlton Mitchell (WR)

Pick 191 - Dorin Dickerson (TE), Dez Briscoe (WR) or Kyle Calloway (OG)

Pick 228 - Selvish Capers (OT), CJ Wilson (DE), Brandon Lang (DE) or Jeremy Williams (WR)

It will be interesting to see how the Bengals players perform relative to the above mock draft  projected best available players.

I also decided to check how the Bengals draft could have gone if we stayed with the same position the Bengals picked and simply took the best available player at that position based on the mock draft projections:

Pick 21 - Jermaine Gresham (TE)

Pick 54 - Everson Griffen (DE) or Carlos Dunlop (DE)

Pick 84 - Mardy Gilyard (WR) or Eric Decker (WR)

Pick 120 - Cam Thomas (DT) or Geno Atkins (DT)

Pick 131 - Ricky Sapp (OLB)

Pick 152 - Matt Tennant (C) or Kyle Calloway (OG)

Pick 191 - Jeremy Williams (WR) or Dez Briscoe (WR)

Pick 228 - Selvish Capers (OT)

I am a Bengals fan and am willing to give the Bengals credit for making the right picks with Dunlop over Griffen, Atkins over Thomas and Briscoe over Williams.  But it will be interesting to see how the mock draft projected best position players of Gilyard, Sapp, Tennant and Capers perform compared with the Bengals picks.

I also decided to take a look at how the Bengals draft could have gone by picking the mock draft best available players but limiting the picks to positions the Bengals picked.  So the below drafts show the Bengals picks by position compared with an alternative draft that the Bengals could have had with the same picks the Bengals had.

I am not arguing that the Bengals made bad picks because there is no way to know until you give it 5 years or so and see how the drafted players work out.  The Bengals have made some good picks recently (Bernard Scott, Domata Peko) of players that weren't projected to even make the NFL so let's give them the benefit of the doubt and see how it works out.
