Bengals Banter: Adam Jones not a "slam dunk" among coaching staff
As one would expect, not everyone was on board with the Adam Jones signing in the Bengals organization according to Aaron Wilson.
ESPN is reporting that adding Jones, who had off-field problems while he was with the Tennessee Titans and the Dallas Cowboys, wasn't a "slam dunk" among the coaching staff.
What about the scouts and executives?
Per the report, it was "hardly unanimous."
Bengals wide receiver Maurice Purify pled not guilty on Friday to disorderly conduct charges.
Marvin Lewis was the Steelers linebacker coach and Bob Bratkowski was the Steelers wide receiver coach while Dermontti Dawson was the Steelers starting center. Behind the Steel Curtain reacts.
James Walker wonder if the Adam Jones signing is ultimately in response to Johnathan Joseph becoming a free agent after the 2011 season.
Marvin Lewis still doesn't have a new contract, and Ed Thompson believes that Browns' decision-making to bring on players with history could have a lot to do with it.

WOO HOO let the drama begin!
MB’s trips to the damaged & discounted shelfs in the free agency grocery store is always a crowd pleaser. I hope this bargain is worth it because this is all we are going to hear about for the next 5 months. MB, the patron saint of degenerate human beings with athletic ability.

more concerned that lewis walks
if not given the power for final decision on personnel. brown and lewis appear to be at loggerheads over the character issue risks for a couple of seasons. lewis’ refusal to accept contract extensions since 2007 is worrisome.
brown could be looking for a new head coach in 2011, one that will accept the cincy front office and its power as is. marvin appears to have grown cold on the current power structure.

First off do you blame him? I, for one, will forgive EVERYTHING Mike Brown has done in the past if he gets this one thing right! Give Lewis the GM position he is wanting. Extend him and give him that and Mike Brown’s legacy will be of a ‘Redeemer’ because he will redeem himself, somewhat. Like I said I would forgive all the stupid things Mike Brown has done if he just gets this one thing right. I’m not holding my breath. I can tell you that much. I really think Marvin is going to walk after this year. I do not blame him one bit but I hope he doesn’t leave.
i read the last article earlier this morning
interesting to say the least, but with the way zimmer has been talking, you know jones was all his.
now matt jones, i think that was an MB move. but marvin can cut him on cutdown day, so it’s not a huge deal.
RIP Slim.
“hardly unaminous”
Mike Zimmer’s vote is the only one that counts as far as I’m concerned. so the reality remains, the 1 scout and #needstostopwearingshorts @lippincott can get bent. Zimmer says so…it’s full go.
(Of course Mikey signed off on this deal, I can see him now: “VET MINIMUM!! Absolutely, how bout a second year?”)
3 yards and a pile of dust
Hmm
Zimmer’s accolades could also be a front. Marvin expressed similar sentiment when the team brought Chris Henry back. When in actuality he didn’t want him back with the team. I’ve been hard on Marvin because his decision making in games have a lot left to be desired.

It’s a faux report. Marvin and Zimmer was open to the idea of Pacman Jones coming to Cincinnati.
I hate stupid reports like this because they have no merit, and they just say it to cause turmoil.
uuuh yeah I write for the Cincinnati Enquirer. Thanks?
How would you know?
That it’s a false report or not? I can easily see this being true.

I know you have sources NC-17 so tell me...
What odds you have on Marvin staying? What will it take? Will he ONLY stay if given final say on ALL personnel decisions? Please reply!
Honestly when it comes to Marvin, nobody really knows….. at all. There is no talk at all about this subject in the locker room or front office, and everybody is just riding it out.
My odds on Marvin Staying is 80%-20% but that is just a opinion with no fact behind it.

Thank you NC-17
Thanks for being honest. I can actually see that. Marvin being the professional he is won’t address it to anyone other than Mike Brown and his Closest Family. I really hope he does stay. Time will tell.
Mike Brown will NEVER
give up the power Lewis is after as long as he is above ground.
I think in the end Lewis will walk, and I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. He’s a good coach as far as managing personalities, but horrible as a technician and game manager.

Three things:
1.) I’d be irate if a guy like Pacman replaces a guy like Quan Cosby as the Punt Returner. In terms of what they bring as players AND as characters, it’s no contest who wins out there.
2.) Palewook’s post scared the hell out of me. I can easily see MB not re-signing Marvin and it going back to the “Dark Ages” again.
3.) I know this is far-fetched, but is it outside the realm of possibility that Mikey could be looking at Marvin as a GM/Player Personnel man and Zimmer as the Head Coach?
by Anthony Cosenza on May 10, 2010 11:50 AM EDT reply actions
That would be to good to be true
I wish that happened but I doubt Mike will do that. I hope that Marvin re-ups but I’m really not sure he will. There is a reason he hasn’t signed an extension. I doubt he will give in either and knowing Mike Brown I don’t think he will either.
Brown has found HIS guy
in Marvin Lewis and Lewis knows that so he is (like Brown) trying to get everything he can out of the contract (money and power). Yes it is slightly worrying that they are playing chicken with a young team that just went to the playoffs and could be, with good coaching, be a regular in the playoffs for about 5 years. But thats how the big boys play when it comes to contract negotiations.
But as i said, Mike Brown trusts Marvin Lewis and when Brown finds a guy he likes he generally finds a way to keep him (ala Zimmer being our highest paid non-head coach ever)
by Sheffieldbengal on May 10, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions
My concern is that Brown can use Zimmer as a reason to not give in
I think he knows a lot of the fans wouldn’t be as outraged as before as long as he kept Zimmer. I just hope he doesn’t use that as a reason to be stubborn.
also concerned if the owners lock out the players in 2011
mike will consider it cheaper to keep zimmer around and let marvin slide. 1 less coach under contract in the down time.

hey Josh Kirkendall,
are any press conferences expected today regarding Pacman and/or Gibril Wilson????
3 yards and a pile of dust

check this out
@CinBengalsNFL: No.24. @Talnar Any idea what number Adam Jones is going to wear?
(Bengals tweets on bottom left of Bengals.com)
No word on Gibril Wilson’s number yet, bro
3 yards and a pile of dust
wilson wore 28 with giants, raiders, and dolphins
unlikely he’ll get that number in cincy, seeing how it belongs to scott. wilson wore 8 in college, again an unlikely number for him in cincy. no idea what number he wore in high school. couldn’t find any information on his number at groove high school in 2001.

well gee
“wilson wore 8 in college, again an unlikely number for him in cincy.”
sometimes if you read something before you comment on it, you won’t have to.
"wherever Brad St. Louis is and Shayne Graham is about to be." -R.F. Mehl
According to NFL rules it would be “impossible”, not “unlikely” for him to wear #8. I believe that was brandone’s point. Who’s the goofball now?
2 words i'd never imagine working together
obtusely verbose.
unlikely, meant a reasonable person, using adequate common sense wouldn’t need it spelled out verbatim. most of us here understand the number system is different in college versus the pros.
unlikely, as in, unless he changes positions or to another league, he won’t be wearing number #8 in 2010.
pure silliness that two people would even need this explained.

Lewis and Zimmer
are the main reasons why good players are willing, and want, to come here. We have never experienced before. If we lose Lewis and are unable to keep Zim, then players will leave here after their contract is up.. and other good free agents won’t even give us the time of day. It WILL be a return to the dark ages where we are a laughing stock. Who will want to come here? Also, college players will dread the possibility of us drafting them. I do not wish to revisit the 90s! Losing Lewis, and possibly Zimmer in 3 years, is a very unpleasant thought. They have both made the Bengals a winning team.

The perils of mobile messaging
Sorry, the 2nd sentence above was to read: “We have never experienced this before.”
by justRick on May 10, 2010 3:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
no probs
But you are right that these guys TOGETHER made us a winning team. I just wish we could have Marvin making the main decisions and not Mikey.
I'd like to add they are a GREAT compliment to each other
Lewis is very very good handling the responsibilities a Head Coach is required to handle. He does a good job handling all the personalities. Zimmer does a great job with his defensive scheme and hands on coaching. Together they are a great compliment to each other. I know they would be good on there own, but IMO they are exactly what the other is missing. Zimmer is a fiery individual and Marvin is calm and patient. They just seem to “fit” together, IMO.
Agreed
Yes, I’m in agreement with you. They do seem to “fit” one another. The Bengals are now a legitimate threat to contend for a Super Bowl championship
by justRick on May 10, 2010 5:24 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Don't alter the media though
They just know us as a bunch of second-rate losers.
We need to go to the big show this year and kick some ass. Only then will we be “legit”
"Flying under the radar" may be a good thing
It gives Zimmer the ability to keep using that “nobody thinks you guys are any good” Nobody wanted you guys" speech for another year, atleast. That could be good motivation and “flying under the radar” isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We won’t have a “huge” bullseye on our back.
I really think that
we flew under the radar last year and that the teams we face this year will take us more seriously this year. Not that they didn’t last year but the motivation will be even greater to beat us. This is what happens when a team becomes a contender. They become a threat. So having a bullseye on our back is going to happen no matter what. We won the AFC north, so there’s no question, X marks the spot. After last year everyone knows not to take the Bengals lightly, unless the obvious happens…..
Some teams will take us more serioulsy but
there are still some who will look at the name on the Jersey and not the players wearing them. Probably more of an issue with the media though. We probably won’t get respect from the media. Which like I said could be a good thing.
On the other hand we don’t have any west coast games this year. 2 of our 6 losses came on the west coast where we have historically played poorly. I think a night game against SD in CIncy late December is to our advantage.
The Strength of schedule is tougher than last year, however, we beat some very good teams last year and lost to some less good ones such as Oakland. We played tough last year, and I think we improved as much as any team out there, and I think that we might be better this year.
There he goes again...
James Walker: Why do you hate the Bengals and our troops?
Slander! Lies!
Oh by the way everyone that is saying Marvin was against this
Marvin put this rumor to bed with his Press Conference where he said the following.
"Mike (Zimmer) brought up (his name) during last season and we decided to stay the course with the guys we were playing with when they got banged up a little bit and tried to fight through it a little bit," Lewis said. "After the season I kind of raised it and did some research on it. We brought him in and worked him out. He wasn’t in the shape he is now. To his credit."
This tells me Mike Brown has given Lewis more control. Will it be enough to keep Lewis. I am starting to think it it. Lewis is going to try to milk it to get as much control as he can, and I don’t blame him!
