According to reports we may see some Surprise cuts this summer

ESPN's rumor section is now showing that we could see Antwan Odom traded this Summer.  It says that since drafting both Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins that we may see a veteran cut or traded.  it also mentions that Robert Geathers is a possibility here.  I like the depth we have and the possibilities here.  Especially if Michael Johnson is going to see some time at SAM.  I like the depth we have accumulated.  It protects us against injuries and it also allows are Defensive to stay fresh throughout the game.

I believe you have to be an insider

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/features/rumors

Cincinnati Bengals have only kept eight defensive linemen on the roster in the past, and with the drafting of Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins in April, there might be some veterans out of a job, including Odom and Robert Geathers. Reedy writes, "if either got injured or was outplayed, one of them could be traded or released."

Given that Odom was able to pile up 8.0 sacks over the first five games before being injured in the sixth, we'd expect quite a few teams to come calling if he did become available.

So lets say that we do decide to put Odom on the trading block, what should we get for him?  Should we trade him?  If so does Dunlap have the inside shot to start?  I want to see what everyone else thinks about this.  I would only trade him if we could get a pretty good pick out of him or a player that could contribute at another position.  For instance a backup QB.  Anyway let me see what eveyone else's opinion is on this.  I would just assume keep him unless we get something really good in return.  I like the depth we have.  I also wouldn't be surprised if we see surprise cuts at other positions. Anyone else think that we could see surprise cuts?

Those would be big surprises, but I don’t think that it’s very likely. I’d be pretty pissed if MB decided to cut payroll after a division title year.

This is our year!

I guess I don't see it either

If I were a guessing man, I would say that if anything those guys will lose playing time if Atkins and Dunlap perform well and then next year they could be out the door.

geathers

has to be hearing footsteps. might have to take a pay cut to stick with cincy this year. will depend on how others play in the pre-season and injuries.

Odom was the pass rush last year...

So I don’t see where they would cut anyone here… especially not Odom. Who did we have for pass rush after he was injured… in all actuality, nobody. So even though they have drafted a couple of players who “MAY” help the pass rush, it would be very disappointing and just plain dumb IMO to cut anyone based on unproven (however good they are supposed to be) aquisitions. I am excited about what Dunlap and Atkins can bring to the team, but Odom was well on his way to record sack stats before he was injured.

by Oregonbengalsfan on May 10, 2010 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

I agree I wouldn't cut him

I said in the post I would not cut him. However if the right trade came along I may go for it. I would assume keep Odom as long as he is healthy though. I guess what I’m saying is if we have to cut someone it would be better to try to work out a trade so that we could possibly add quality depth at another position. I don’t want it to be Odom either though. Geathers may not bother me so bad, but again I would rather get someone for him. I wouldn’t just cut him and get nothting out of him but I could see it happening with his salary, I still hope not for nothing in return.

Odom was only the pass rush for the first 6 games. Not that I disagree with you – Odom should stay.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on May 10, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

did we have a pass rush after the first 6 games?

by ephram on May 10, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

ha!

Not much of one last year, but this year could be different. If MJ could get in on more snaps, he could rack up 5-10 sacks this year. Dunlap and Atkins will bring added pressure on 3rd downs if they pan out.

This is our year!

Something to remember guys...

If we keep 8 Defensive Lineman that gives us Jonathan Fanene, Carlos Dunlap, Geno Atkins, Antwan Odom, Michael Johnson, Robert Geathers, Pat Sims, Tank Johnson, Domato Peko, Frostee Rucker, Clinton Mcdonald and Orien Harris. Thats 11 guys for 8 positions. 4 of those won’t make it. What 3 do you have getting cut??? Its tighter then I think some of us realize. Instead of cutting someone if the right trade came along I think I would have to consider it. Like I said only if they right trade was available. No matter how you look at it someone good is getting cut.

by C1ncy4Life on May 10, 2010 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

Should have said If you count Michael Johnson as a LB...

What 3 do you cut. Thats if they count him as a LB. If not 4 of those guys are going to get cut or traded! Someone good is not going to make the team. We have a few positions like that this year too!

by C1ncy4Life on May 10, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Harris was traded away last year, so its not like he has an inside track to stay. McDonald could spend another year on the PS as an emergency replacement.

After that I see three posible ways to go. 1. Cut Rucker. He has been an underachiever for years. Last year he played in 10 games with 7 tackles and a Sack. not impressive. 2. PUP Odom if he isn’t fully healty. 3. Keep 9 linemen with MJ as a swing LB/DE.

by jim0ijk on May 10, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea from a talent perspective

But Geathers makes a good bit of money and the Bengals may feel that someone else can take that spot and save them on the contract. I hope they keep all of them personally. If, by chance, we don’t I wouldn’t want to simply cut them either. If we aren’t going to keep all of them I would hope to get something in return. Maybe QB depth or depth at another position. If Michael Johnson can successfully play SAM *(I think he can) then this will help. Like I said I love the depth. It protects against fatigue and in case of an injury or if Odom doesn’t return to full strength. I personally hope we do not cut any of them for money reasons. I would rather cut Mcdonald, Harris, and Rucker. We can keep Michael Johnson at DE and LB which will allow us to keep the rest of the players.

by C1ncy4Life on May 11, 2010 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Money

I don’t think the money will be an issue until it is time to resign Johnson or Dunlop, assuming they develop.

by jim0ijk on May 11, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to resign.

Say for instance Dunlap beats out Geathers for the starting position. Now you are paying 3 mil a year for a player who is a backup. I could EASILY see Mikey think he can cut him and save the money. Thats what i was meaning. Not signing anybody but the fact that Mikey may think he can save a few dollars by cutting Geathers. Hopefully you are right.

by C1ncy4Life on May 11, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Geathers is probably the guy with the most pressure on him...

but remember Odom is coming back from serious injury… If Odom he’s not physically ready to play, its hard to say whether or not we can wait around on him coming back

by The Dealio on May 11, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I had posted that below and didn’t want to repeat, under the Ruckers. Geathers, harris post

prediction

Clinton and Orien are gone. 1st down- Odom/Peko/Sims/Geathers— -2nd down Odom/Peko/Tank/Fanene— -3rd down Odom/Fanene/Tank/Dunlap
MJ comes in to give us 3-4 base looks with him and Geathers at OLB, with a Tank/Sims/Atkins type of D-line, Dhani and Rey in the middle

I agree that Clinton and Orien are the first 2 out but who does that leave you?

Who else is out? Frostee Rucker more than likely is number 3. That leaves you one more. Whom will it be?

by C1ncy4Life on May 10, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Rucker,Geathers, harris

I think it would be a big mistake to get rid of odom he offers us too much while MJ and carlos are still young and arnt proven…untill they do odom stays

and i have been saying this for sometime now geathes is on his way out, i had high hopes for him and so did the team back when he was getting sacks but now nothin and the only reason why we havent gor rid of him yet is that we didnt have anyone to replace him but look out cause we do now…..bye bye geathers

by socalbengalsfan on May 10, 2010 4:38 PM EDT reply actions

Geathers could be gone

if Odom is healthy and Dunlop or MJ earn the starting spot. Geathers is too high paid to sit on the bench. That said Geathers lead the D line in tackles, was 4th on the team in Sacks, had one of 3 defensive touchdowns. I don’t see him getting cut until someone deposes him; however, I definitely could see him come out on every passing down in favor of Fanene, Dunlop or Johnson.

by jim0ijk on May 10, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok thats what I'm thinking

I think that Geathers could be gone but again I would hate to cut him. I would rather get something in return but we’ll see. He makes a lot of money and while stout against the run he could definitely lose his job. I see this as very interesting. I do think they will keep 9 if you count Michael Johnson. I think his ability to play LB saves someones job on the Dline.

by C1ncy4Life on May 10, 2010 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Trading Odom would not be smart.......Geathers has no value........

Geather’s will probably be released unless he has a breakout camp and pre-season. Fanene is in the last year of his contract and played very well in the absence of Odom. Geather’s is very good @ the run but that is not why he got the big contract that he had. If Dunlap or Michael Johnson show the coaches that they can contribute right now anf if Fanene plays like he did last year…i think Geathers will be released because know one will give up a pick for him. NO WAY CINCY DOES ANYTHING WITH ODOM………………… he is the only player on the d-line that has to be accounted for on every snap that he is on the field plus on 3rd down he can slide to T and allow the young cats Dunlap and Johnson to come in and go hard at the opp QB.

I hope your right but, I wouldn't be surprised

Like I said I love the depth on the D line. It ensures we are fresh and protects us in case of an injury.

by C1ncy4Life on May 11, 2010 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Geathers still has value as a good run stopping DE. I could easily see them keeping him over Rucker.

If they think Odom won’t heal 100%, he could be gone. They like to dump guys they think have their best ball behind them.

by ephram on May 10, 2010 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

Slow down

Until the scrimmages and pre-season play start, no player evaluation can be done so quickly after the draft and the short summer camp. We don’t even know how the rookies will do on the field after they put their uniforms on. We need improvement over last year but not a total revamp of the roster with no chemistry.

by Richard L on May 10, 2010 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

My opinion is

I hope we don’t get rid of Geathers or Odom personally. I love the depth on the D line. This will allow us to be fresh in the 4th quarter of games all through the season. This will allow us to provide a little better pass rush because as the other team wears down we shouldn’t, at all. It also provides us with protection in case of an injury or if Odom doesn’t return to full strength.

I just wanted to see if everyone else felt the same way. If for some reason they do decide to cut Odom or Geathers I would rather them trade them so we get something out of them. I do think they have value to some other teams. Like I said though I prefer to keep both of these guys.

We will be very very deep. Lets hope they don’t make a decision based on money. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a veteran cut at this position or another. I think Mcdonald, Harris, and Rucker are the most likely to be cut on the Defensive Line. That gives us Odom, Geathers, Dunlap, Fanene, and Johnson at Defensive End. Possibly with Fanene as our last DE to make the team. That is A LOT of depth. He very easily could start on a lot of NFL teams. Our tackle spot is just as deep with Tank, Peko, Sims, and Geno with some of the ends sliding to the Tackle spot on 3rd down passing situations. All of these players would contribute heavily on almost all NFL teams. I love this depth and I think that is how the roster should shake down. That gives us 9 players on the D line but with Michael Johnson going to play both end and LB there is no reason not to keep the above players. Is that how everyone else see’s it?

by C1ncy4Life on May 11, 2010 10:02 AM EDT reply actions

Just to be clear on one thing...

You spoke about our Depth on the D-line.

Is this still the Bengals we’re talking about?

Seems like i can remember a time, not too long ago, throughout the 1990’s and into the 2000’s, where the terms “depth” and “any defensive position” (especially the D-Line) never belonged in the same sentence.

So much for the beloved Bungles that we all grew up to regret. It’s almost like they are trying to field a good team over the last 1/2 decade. It’s so, so, so different.

It’s such a strange and silly concept, the Bengals trying to play Defense. It’s so gosh darn odd that by golly, i think i like it. In fact, i like it a lot!!!

by ephram on May 11, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Fanene had 6 sacks last year...

and only started 10 games! Personally, I think he’s a lock to make this team. The coaches love him and he’s improved every year. I wouldn’t be surpised to see us keep 9 guys.

My prediction: Peko, Tank, Odom, Geathers, Fanene, Dunlap, M. Johnson, Sims, and Atkins. (with Johnson suiting up as a backer from time to time)

I think that this provides us Great depth, and allow our starters, Tank and Peko especially, to rest when they get dinged up. ex. Tank when he had plantar fasciitis last year.

by The Dealio on May 11, 2010 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Not only for injuries, but simply to have series rotation

With the depth comes the ability to rotate guys in more often.

Think of the wonderful mid field stances where our D hold the other team to a punt, then the O comes in with a famous 3 and outer. Instead of the same guys coming back in, give some a rest and put in the pressure guys to attack the QB.

You don’t dump your built up reserves on D. That’s why you have guys that can play a couple of positions.

by UpStateMike on May 11, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point

Having so many quality back ups will keep guys fresh in game too…. I love our line

by The Dealio on May 11, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

True

Fanene was a beast last year and there’s no way he shouldn’t make this team. If anything, there could be a linebacker cut this year, especially if MJ plays a little himself.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on May 11, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Jeanty could be the surprise cut.

With MJ backing up Mauluga and Muckleroy backing up Jones, Johnson back-up to Rivers and Hodge as a teamer.

by jim0ijk on May 11, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok let me make sure everyone is on board with what I'm saying

I definitely think Fanene makes this team. I was definitely not trying to say he wouldn’t make the team. My point is he could be considered the last DE in the Rotation yet he would start for most NFL teams. In fact I am a big fan of Fanene. How can you not root for this guy. One of the hardest workers, great motor, does whatever is asked of him, very versatile, and he just seems to have a nose for making big plays. I didn’t mention the passion and how that rubs off. The point is that is how incredibly deep our line is.

Fanene will not only make the team but he will contribute. We can keep players fresh and when they do get in there they can play like ANIMALS!

by C1ncy4Life on May 11, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

I agree that Fanene should definitely make the team. I was not trying to make a point that Fanene wouldn’t make the team. I was trying to make the point that, thats is how TALENTED and DEEP this line is. I am a huge fan of Fanene. I would be very surprised if he does not make the team. He is versatile, great motor, hard worker, and is a “Zimmer guy”. Like I said the point I was trying to make is that he is a backup. He could start on most NFL teams. That just goes to show you how deep we are on the D line!

by C1ncy4Life on May 11, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a good problem to have...

I think McDonald, Rucker, Harris are gone. I would to see Geathers get traded if anyone actually does. He’s overrated and an underachiever. Everyone seems to like Atkins, but what has he actually done for us? I would rather see an unproven player cut than a proven player. I’m am absolutely loving the depth at D-Line!!!!!

by DonMegga on May 11, 2010 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

McDonald

Isn’t so much gone as Practice Squaded again.

by jim0ijk on May 11, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Atkins

You have to assume that every 4th round or higher pick will make the team. its not so much liking him as accepting reality.

by jim0ijk on May 11, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed on Mcdonald, Rucker, and Harris

Atkins hasn’t done anything but he hasn’t had a chance either. He probably makes the team because of his quickness and potential pass rush ability. I agree with loving the depth on the D line. The depth alone should provide us with a better pass rush as we can rotate in fresh bodies with starter quality talent constantly.
