Question of the Day: Should the NFL Adapt Postseason Overtime Rules to the Regular Season?

One of the more debated topics here in the past has been overtime rules. And one of those rules was going to change; most notably the rule that unless you score a touchdown on the opening overtime possession, both teams would get a chance to handle the football. However, that's only for the playoffs. This week's owners meetings would, if they tabled it, adapt the same rule during the regular season.

Questions of the Day: Do you think that the NFL should change overtime rules to include at least one possession (via offense, or returns) during the regular season? Or should the NFL leave the overtime changes for the postseason? What's your overall thought about the NFL overtime rules?

I think they should play untill the end of an entire quarter

and if they games still tied then play another untill it’s not tied much like in basketball… If endurance is the issue then shorten the overtime periods to 5 maybe 8 minutes but I believe an entire overtime quarter should be established..

i think its odd

…to make such a sigificant rule change only for the playoffs. You’d think they would want full season to see its impact on strategy and game outcomes before so much is riding on it.

I mean its not like they would introduce special pass interference rules for the playoffs right?

I think the original rule change was flat out dumb. It was blatantly obvious to anybody with a brain that the reason this happened was because Favre lost in the NFCCG. Boo hoo, cry me a river.

But once it’s been made, it’s even more dumb to leave it as playoffs-only. One OT to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.

Sudden death was and is and will always be the best way. Give a second chance just is not football. If the first team to have the ball scores then the other team was just not good enough. Let’s not wimp out like in other sports. This is football, let’s keep it that way.
