Well Mr. Owens, Today is the Day. Cast your vote for our biggest FA signing of the year.
From a publicity perspective Owens' signing is far bigger than Antonio Bryant's or Gibril Wilson's (a couple days ago over 60% polled on NFL.com say the Ravens take the AFCN). I'd like to look at our other UFA signings and see how T.O.'s possible impact compares. For each player I'll rank their expected impact according to our dependency on them at their position, their expected statistical production, their expected influence on the team's psyche, and overall, each on a scale of 1 to 10.
1) Antonio Bryant: I'm not sold on the lame duck theory that has quickly arisen as a result of the T.O. talk, and a little knee soreness. The coaches are sure to ease him into a camp schedule which is already relatively light. On the other hand a T.O. signing is bound to take away a few of his red-zone snaps at the very least.
Dependency: 8 Production: 7 (600-800 yards and 5-7 TDs) Influence: 4 Overall: 7
2) Gibril Wilson: The guy they brought in to solidify a weak safety position wrecked by injuries last year. It's tough to say where the majority of snaps go at the position, but Crocker and Roy and Ndukwe are sure to have somewhat of a leg up having played in the Z-fense for a season or more.
Dependency: 6 Production: 4 (30-40 Tackles, 1-2 INTs, and a FF or Sack) Influence: 2 Overall: 4.5
3) Bobbie Williams: Bringing back Bobbie was essential to the stability of the offense and renews an excellent veteran presence on the line. Definitely the best signing in my opinion as the best player on the line without much behind him on the depth chart and he was the most consistently great player on the entire team last year.
Dependency: 10 Production: 9 (Key to all offensive yards) Influence: 9 Overall: 9.5
4) Tank Johnson: Tank's first signing with the team was met with many grumblings from the fan base, but he turned out to be a stand-up guy on the mature end of his playing career. His resigning as an unrestricted free agent this year gives the team way more options in the tackle rotation and a lighthearted, positive attitude on the sideline.
Dependency: 7 Production: 6 (20-40 Tackles, 2-4 Sacks) Influence: 7 Overall: 7
5) Reggie Kelly: The reverend may not see as many snaps as he did before the heel popped, but he'll still be huge in the blocking game and, more importantly, a professional moral compass on the team. Perhaps the biggest benefit to his signing is the fact that Rex Ryan and his brother Rob in Cleveland are scared to death of his protection skills.
Dependency: 5 Production: 5 (Reduced Sack and QB hurry totals) Influence: 9 Overall: 6.5
6) Mike Nugent: The front office took a their biggest chance letting Shayne go and replacing him with the former Buckeye phenom. His pro days have been a far cry from the glory years due to a nasty knee injury which threatened his career. He sounds like a lock to win the job over Dave Rayner with a clean bill of health and the leg strength of yore.
Dependency: 9 Production: 10 (Perhaps the most points on the team) Influence: 2 Overall: 8
7) Roy Williams: Zimmer loves the guy, which may be the only reason Roy's career isn't over. His arm is bionic, and not in the good way like Barrett from FF7. If Roy doesn't think he has many hits left in the arm, he'll most likely play tougher rather than hold back, since any time he lands on it he could be done. But that being said, Roy is a smart individual who knows the system and will get the most out of his snaps.
Dependency: 7 Production: 6 (40-60 Tackles, 1-2 INTs, and a FF) Influence: 7 Overall: 7
8) Terrell Owens: You know that after signing Owens, he'll have a significant role in the offense. It will be hard to take him off the field. If we signed him, I'd view our lack of an experienced fullback and plethora of receivers as an indication of 3 and 4 receiver sets to come. He would probably have a bigger impact than Bryant this year if he does join the team, and may battle Chad for the team lead in receiving TDs.
Dependency: 7 Production: 9 (800-1000 yards and 7-9 TDs) Influence: 7 Overall: 8
SUMMARY:
Bobbie Williams- 9.5
Terrell Owens- 8
Mike Nugent- 8
Roy Williams- 7
Tank Johnson- 7
Antonio Bryant- 7
Reggie Kelly- 6.5
Gibril Wilson- 4.5

Makes me wonder.....
If we will see the same commitment to the running game. I hope they do not forget that this allows our Defense to be rested and opens up the passing game when the Safeties start creeping up.
The best part of it is
so will every defensive coordinator.
We still have a great run team set up. Now we have a great WR group of both vets and rookies. Throw in some potentially devastating TEs and some guys in the backfield that can catch and run and the result is a guessing game.
I also think it allows us to game plan against each team’s weaknesses and strengths. For example, you can shut down Revis if you have him constantly pitted against Ocho and TO, creating opportuity for underneath and the running game.

Bobbie Williams
TO will get the most publicity but this is a running team; we need big guys like Bobbie to keep making room for Ced if we want to do well next year.
Bobbie is also a great guy who everyone on the team loves. They all say he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

You forgot Both Jones's
Granted, I’m not sure if Matt even makes the team, but no mention of “Adam”?
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
Completely by mistake
I should have he’d be around the same impact as Gibril. Just so many good signings, I didn’t put Matt Jones in on purpose, though. I doubt he proves me wrong.

I don’t think there’s any reason that Matt Jones makes the team. He make less of an impact than the immediate needs receivers, nor does he have the potential that the younger guys have. Jones though could prove to be huge as a 3rd corner.
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
Zimmer
I agree with WHYUS. As long as Zimmer is around, the defense will be solid. If anything happens that causes Marvin to lose his job, I surely hope that Zimmer steps in to be the new head coach. He is definitely what the Bengals need as a leader.

Reverend Reggie
WTF….no love for re-signing Reggie?!?!?!?! IMHO this was the most secure signing of the offseason. you KNOW exactly what you GET from him, and we NEED/LOVE everything he brings to the TEAM
it comes down to mind over matter....if you don't mind, it won't matter
I like the run blocking from him.
He definitely adds something we need. We’re still a running team, regardless of the signings to improve the passing game.

The think I love about signing TO is that the days of 8 in the box are mostly over.
The same thing that was said about Favre last year applies to us getting TO.
Sort of OT but did anyone hear what Ocho said? He said it will be “a shame” if the Bengals don’t win the Super Bowl this season. I like that confidence.
