Best recieving corp. of all time?

So after the news today of the Bengals signing Terrell Owens my head almost exploded.  I wrote a post earlier in the preseason giving my reasons for why I think we now have the best WRs in the leauge.  Now that we got TO I really don't know what to think.  Before this there were many possible WR combinations for the field.

1.OCHO

2. Bryant

3.Shipley

4.Caldwell

5.Jones

6.Simpson

With two/three of those guys being possesion recievers and four deep threats with Ocho, Bryant, Jones, and Simpson.

Now the line-up can go so many ways especially with Chad saying he'll play the Robin to TO"s Batman, does that mean TO is the #1.  Doubtful.  That job should still belong to Chad but we will see what happens.  My projected line-up, which can be very flexible.

1. Chad

2.T.O.

3.Bryant

4.Shipley

5.Caldwell

6.Jones/Simpson

Now that is some line-up on paper.  To think that four of these guys Chad, T.O., Bryant, and Matt Jones have spent the majority of their carreers as Number 1 wide recievers on their respective teams.  Throw in a guy like Simpson who was supposed to be our future(NOW) number one, whos been steadily improving.  And guys that just flat out make the tough catches Caldwell, Shipley, hopefully Gresham and Coffman.  And your looking at what has the potential to be the best WR class EVER seen.  And if you play fantasy football, you'd be wise to draft #9 this year.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors.

Maybe in '05...

Back then TO and Chad would have been absurd. Now that TO is 36 and Chad is getting older at 32, “best ever” is a REALLY big stretch.

Negatory

Owens is old, Bryant is unimpressive so far, Ocho is good, and a bunch of unproven rookies. SO to answer the question in your title, No it’s not.

Two HOF WRs on the field at the same time. Unproven rookies? Maybe. I think Caldwell proved himself against the Ravens and the Steelers last year. Personally I like Matt Jones, but his chances are diminishing. We’ll have to make this decision after the season.

Let alone TO? If Cris Carter, Tim Brown and Issac Bruce are not in, TO and especially Chad stand no shot.

20 catches in a game is pretty good, no? And if he can get a ring this year to solidify his career he’ll be in the HOF.

Your all dumb. T.O has the sixth most receptions and third most TD receptions in NFL history. That gets you into the H.O.F.

by anderk8 on Jul 27, 2010 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Issac Bruce has a Superbowl ring and more receptions than TO, and he probably won’t be in the HOF. Hate to break it to ya, but 1,000 receptions is not going to keep getting guys in the HOF with the way the game is changing. I can name you 5-6 guys in the league right now who are most likely going to end their careers with 1,000+ catches.

To mention TO in the same breath as those in Canton is utterly stupid. TO has been a great player, but has single handily killed teams.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 27, 2010 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

TO is in the HOF

POINT BLANK PERIOD. Dude is like in the top ten in every major receiving category. No way TO does not make the HOF.

Oh, and atleast Cris Carter will be in the HOF one day.

So, if Hines Ward has more yards, TD's, playoff games and Super Bowl rings than T.O....

Does that mean Hines goes in BEFORE T.O. or after?

Just wondering.

Hines Ward/T.O.

I hate the Steelers(and everyone else in Our Division)But I will give credit where credit is due.Hines Ward and T.O. will both be H.O.F.‘ers one day.T.O. could make a step toward that cause if he would tone it down with the talk and go on a mission to wreck all D.B.’s he comes up against this season.Same for Johnson.Play ball and talk to the D’B.‘s while on the field.Don’t talk garbage and let other coaches tack their comments up on their club house walls. It would light a fire under our butts when i played. And most of the time it would lead to Us beating those teams.Talk on the field and not in the media!Play to Win always.

Cedric Benson supposedly participated in a bar-room brawl in Texas and has had several other incidents.
Rey Maualuga was arrested on drunk-driving charges.
Antonio Bryant has found himself on a number of different teams due to character issues.
Matt Jones is a recovering drug addict and has had his share of problems in the past.
Tank Johnson and Adam Jones were two of the worst behaved NFL players before joining the Bengals.
Chad Ochocinco could be the biggest headache.
Owens could prove an even bigger headache.

I say TO and Mason are good at different things, but basically a wash

Dickson is really good (I am a Duck Alum.) but I see no reason to think he is any better than Gresham. they are probably both about equal (although every scout had Gresham as the top TE). Heap is finished.

and I would say that Bryant, Shipley, and the other backups are better than Stallworth (who hasnt done anything in 4-5 years) and Clayton

We all get to find out in a few months though. It probably comes down to Palmer vs Flacco anyways

The most important thing

is that we have top 10 corners that can cover your recievers, while you are bringing the same bums back that blew multiple games for you last year.

The Bengals are bringing back a young and improving D while the Ravens are bringing back a declining and elderly D. See you clowns in September

The bengals only gave up 203 yds per game through the air last year, and the ravens gave up 207 yds per game can you believe that?!?!? 207!! those 4 yards are the difference between elite and utterly useless right?

They gave up more passing TDs than the ravens (cin- 18, bal – 17) and picked off fewer passes (cin – 19, bal – 22). opposing QBs also had a better passer rating against them. your corners have name recognition; awesome….don’t care. they didn’t do their job any better than the ravens.

Stats only show one side of the entire story...

Cincy was playing with a lead most of the year. Thus teams were passing more against us. So his assertion that the stats can be skewed is actually correct.

by C1ncy4Life on Jul 28, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

The funny part is that I had a discussion on this board about Leon Hall, and certain members over here were arguing that Hall was a top-five corner because of his statistics. I said that Hall’s numbers were a product of the Bengals’ system and that the statistics “only show one side of the story” as you just said. They thought that concept was laughable because they wanted Hall to be a top-five corner so badly.

Now, the Ravens’ pass-defense statistics are meaningless because they favor the Ravens and the Bengals are (so-clearly in your minds) a better pass-defense? Jungle John came on our board several times and criticized us for being irrational when it can to the Ravens. I don’t know, John… It looks like you have the same problem over here.

comparing tight ends at this point in time is stupid. coffman sucks, gresham hasn’t played, two of the raven’s tight ends haven’t played and we all know heap is on the way out. you might as well not even count him.

ocho > boldin? i’d call them about even and they’ll probably put up similar numbers this year.

bryant > mason? you’re smoking some good stuff, pass it here. you fail to recognize mason doesn’t have half as many injuries as bryant and bryant has never consistently… done anything. he’s approaching (some would say he is already there) over the hill and still is looked at for his potential. youre as crazy as mike brown signing him for that ridiculous amount.

“caldwell > ?” is pretty accurate, because nobody knows who this guy is better than. he’s trash for the most part.

comparing to to stallworth is relevant how? TO will not be lining up number three.

and i’ve never heard of shipley reed.

WR don’t take nearly the beating that Backs take, so keeping 4 is smart. The Ravens had 5 halfbacks and a full back last year on the roster. I wouldn’t say 6 WR is a stretch, but go ahead and run through your roster picking your final 53 including 6 WR and you will most likely get to a point where you feel that Caldwell, Jones, or Simpson just has to go.

You guys now have the top two premier princess WR’s in the league. Selfish and mouthy.

Good luck with that (not really).

As opposing quarterbacks crouched under center, Lambert pumped his legs up and down, thumping the turf like a war drum. He mouthed threats to opposing running backs that would make even the most hardened Catholic nun weep for humanity. He fulfilled those threats with coldblooded suplex tackles. He may or may not have chain-smoked at halftime, depending on who you ask.

It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.

Actually
He acts like he went through some traumatic experience with ravens and resents them now or something like that. It sounds like some shitty Movie….

That is what you all are acting like coming on here with these comments. If you didn’t consider us a threat, you wouldn’t care and you wouldn’t be here.

You don't know?

Me and MaLoR like to fuck with people to get a tiny knee-jerk reaction. You guys on the other hand had more of a place-kick reaction. BTW Reply: Fail

whoever posted this was obviously trolling. all they wanted to do was get a ton of responses and cause controversy. i mean, that’s more believable than thinking anyone actually believes this retirement home of a WR corps is the best ever

Sorry, my computer is being stupid.

Anyways, I was abou to say we’re not going to convince these trolls of anything. We’re just going to have to let the Bengals themselves convince them. Keep in mind that we get the Ravens twice this year. We’ll find out then who the better team is.

twice this year

which is different than most football years

Actually, look at 2005 and 2007

Year / Site / Result

2003 Cincinnati W, 34-26
   Baltimore L, 13-31

2004 Cincinnati L, 9-23
   Baltimore W, 27-26

2005 Baltimore W, 21-9
   Cincinnati W, 42-29

2006 Baltimore L, 20-26
   Cincinnati W, 13-7

2007 Cincinnati W, 27-20
   Baltimore W, 21-7

2008 Baltimore L, 10-17
   Cincinnati L, 3-34

2009 Baltimore W, 17-14
   Cincinnati W, 17-7

Since Marvin Lewis has been the Bengals HC, the Bengals have swept the Ravens in the division 3 times and the Ravens have done it to the Bengals once… in 2008. Overall the Ravens lead the series 15 – 13, but since Marvin Lewis has been the coach it goes the other way with the Bengals leading 9 – 5.
