Best recieving corp. of all time?
So after the news today of the Bengals signing Terrell Owens my head almost exploded. I wrote a post earlier in the preseason giving my reasons for why I think we now have the best WRs in the leauge. Now that we got TO I really don't know what to think. Before this there were many possible WR combinations for the field.
1.OCHO
2. Bryant
3.Shipley
4.Caldwell
5.Jones
6.Simpson
With two/three of those guys being possesion recievers and four deep threats with Ocho, Bryant, Jones, and Simpson.
Now the line-up can go so many ways especially with Chad saying he'll play the Robin to TO"s Batman, does that mean TO is the #1. Doubtful. That job should still belong to Chad but we will see what happens. My projected line-up, which can be very flexible.
1. Chad
2.T.O.
3.Bryant
4.Shipley
5.Caldwell
6.Jones/Simpson
Now that is some line-up on paper. To think that four of these guys Chad, T.O., Bryant, and Matt Jones have spent the majority of their carreers as Number 1 wide recievers on their respective teams. Throw in a guy like Simpson who was supposed to be our future(NOW) number one, whos been steadily improving. And guys that just flat out make the tough catches Caldwell, Shipley, hopefully Gresham and Coffman. And your looking at what has the potential to be the best WR class EVER seen. And if you play fantasy football, you'd be wise to draft #9 this year.

Maybe in '05...
Back then TO and Chad would have been absurd. Now that TO is 36 and Chad is getting older at 32, “best ever” is a REALLY big stretch.

Negatory
Owens is old, Bryant is unimpressive so far, Ocho is good, and a bunch of unproven rookies. SO to answer the question in your title, No it’s not.

Two HOF WRs on the field at the same time. Unproven rookies? Maybe. I think Caldwell proved himself against the Ravens and the Steelers last year. Personally I like Matt Jones, but his chances are diminishing. We’ll have to make this decision after the season.
You think Ocho is a HOF WR?

Let alone TO? If Cris Carter, Tim Brown and Issac Bruce are not in, TO and especially Chad stand no shot.
20 catches in a game is pretty good, no? And if he can get a ring this year to solidify his career he’ll be in the HOF.

Your all dumb. T.O has the sixth most receptions and third most TD receptions in NFL history. That gets you into the H.O.F.
Issac Bruce has a Superbowl ring and more receptions than TO, and he probably won’t be in the HOF. Hate to break it to ya, but 1,000 receptions is not going to keep getting guys in the HOF with the way the game is changing. I can name you 5-6 guys in the league right now who are most likely going to end their careers with 1,000+ catches.
To mention TO in the same breath as those in Canton is utterly stupid. TO has been a great player, but has single handily killed teams.
TO is in the HOF
POINT BLANK PERIOD. Dude is like in the top ten in every major receiving category. No way TO does not make the HOF.
Oh, and atleast Cris Carter will be in the HOF one day.
So, if Hines Ward has more yards, TD's, playoff games and Super Bowl rings than T.O....
Does that mean Hines goes in BEFORE T.O. or after?
Just wondering.

Hines Ward/T.O.
I hate the Steelers(and everyone else in Our Division)But I will give credit where credit is due.Hines Ward and T.O. will both be H.O.F.‘ers one day.T.O. could make a step toward that cause if he would tone it down with the talk and go on a mission to wreck all D.B.’s he comes up against this season.Same for Johnson.Play ball and talk to the D’B.‘s while on the field.Don’t talk garbage and let other coaches tack their comments up on their club house walls. It would light a fire under our butts when i played. And most of the time it would lead to Us beating those teams.Talk on the field and not in the media!Play to Win always.

IMO TO isn’t the TO from few years ago. I don’t think he has the break away speed but will be a good redzone target.
As for best wr core in history? Nope.
As for the current league. I think Indy has a better core IMO.

Not true at all
He just wasnt a fit for most teams. And Mike Lombardi made a good point at NFL.com. The fact that he still got 850 yards on a Buffalo team with no O-line and no QB is still impressive.
Ocho, TO, Bryant, Shipley, & Gresham >>>> Boldin, Mason, Heap, & ????

He just wasnt a fit for most teams.
Yea, perfect character for your team. Here is the list so far.
Cedric Benson supposedly participated in a bar-room brawl in Texas and has had several other incidents.
Rey Maualuga was arrested on drunk-driving charges.
Antonio Bryant has found himself on a number of different teams due to character issues.
Matt Jones is a recovering drug addict and has had his share of problems in the past.
Tank Johnson and Adam Jones were two of the worst behaved NFL players before joining the Bengals.
Chad Ochocinco could be the biggest headache.
Owens could prove an even bigger headache.
People deserve second chances, right?
And if they screw up again after the Bengals give them a second chance, their ass is gone.

I say TO and Mason are good at different things, but basically a wash
Dickson is really good (I am a Duck Alum.) but I see no reason to think he is any better than Gresham. they are probably both about equal (although every scout had Gresham as the top TE). Heap is finished.
and I would say that Bryant, Shipley, and the other backups are better than Stallworth (who hasnt done anything in 4-5 years) and Clayton
We all get to find out in a few months though. It probably comes down to Palmer vs Flacco anyways

The most important thing
is that we have top 10 corners that can cover your recievers, while you are bringing the same bums back that blew multiple games for you last year.
The Bengals are bringing back a young and improving D while the Ravens are bringing back a declining and elderly D. See you clowns in September
Hi fans it Brandon Roy.
And ME.....LaMarcus Aldridge
The bengals only gave up 203 yds per game through the air last year, and the ravens gave up 207 yds per game can you believe that?!?!? 207!! those 4 yards are the difference between elite and utterly useless right?
They gave up more passing TDs than the ravens (cin- 18, bal – 17) and picked off fewer passes (cin – 19, bal – 22). opposing QBs also had a better passer rating against them. your corners have name recognition; awesome….don’t care. they didn’t do their job any better than the ravens.
Mr Malor
It’s easy to make Points when your only considering your point of view/opinion!!! stop being a jackass
Well Deftron’s vie/opinion is skewed. Just because I throw the stats out there to show him he is in the wrong place to make a statement like that does not make me a jackass, so don’t come at me with personal attacks because I have done nothing of that nature.
Your CBs
were the ones that let game winning drives happen over and over again last year, remember? Or need I remind you of what Cincy and a few other teams did to you in the 4th quarter.
And listing team Defense statistics dont accurately reflect the quality of you DBs. Your front line was a little better and I would say your LBs were too, but other than Ed Reed, your DBs werent that good.

Point is I’m sick of hearing that Revis shut down Chad when they were on an island. Revis had a safety over the top almost every play.
That’s just ignorant. Revis shut-down receivers much better than Chad all season without safety help, and in the Bengals game, he shut-down Chad without safety help. Maybe YOU should watch the film…
Revis intercepting without safety help and covering Chad one-on-one.
He's the jackass? HA!
MaLoR posted statistics. Hmmm…I think I remember reading somewhere that someone said statistics are not opinion, they are fact.
Can’t take the heat…Well, you know the rest. :)
As opposing quarterbacks crouched under center, Lambert pumped his legs up and down, thumping the turf like a war drum. He mouthed threats to opposing running backs that would make even the most hardened Catholic nun weep for humanity. He fulfilled those threats with coldblooded suplex tackles. He may or may not have chain-smoked at halftime, depending on who you ask.
For sixty minutes each Sunday, Jack Lambert was a demon.
TEAM DEFENSE STATS
lets flip it around on offense.
Is Tony Romo a better QB than Drew Brees because Dallas scored more points? No
The Ravens secondary isnt good once you get past Ed Reed and anything they do get is usually because of pressure coming from quality players like Suggs, Ngata, etc.

MaLoR's "Opinion"???
Dude spits out hard cold stats, things that actually happened, measurables that your very own “Top 10” cornerbacks/defense laid on the turf like so many turd eggs last year, and you want to call his assertions “Opinions/Points of View?”
This is why I think that some fans are retarded.
Please, Anderk, comment solely on what I just said. Nothing more. And tell me how MaLoR was speaking about his opinions. How did his point of view dictate how your defense played. He laid out FACTS.

Stats only show one side of the entire story...
Cincy was playing with a lead most of the year. Thus teams were passing more against us. So his assertion that the stats can be skewed is actually correct.
The funny part is that I had a discussion on this board about Leon Hall, and certain members over here were arguing that Hall was a top-five corner because of his statistics. I said that Hall’s numbers were a product of the Bengals’ system and that the statistics “only show one side of the story” as you just said. They thought that concept was laughable because they wanted Hall to be a top-five corner so badly.
Now, the Ravens’ pass-defense statistics are meaningless because they favor the Ravens and the Bengals are (so-clearly in your minds) a better pass-defense? Jungle John came on our board several times and criticized us for being irrational when it can to the Ravens. I don’t know, John… It looks like you have the same problem over here.
bryant hasn’t done anything… ever. and now that i think about it, shipley has a whopping 0 career receptions.
I think i like you. You get it.

ocho > boldin? i’d call them about even and they’ll probably put up similar numbers this year.
bryant > mason? you’re smoking some good stuff, pass it here. you fail to recognize mason doesn’t have half as many injuries as bryant and bryant has never consistently… done anything. he’s approaching (some would say he is already there) over the hill and still is looked at for his potential. youre as crazy as mike brown signing him for that ridiculous amount.

On a side note, the "LOL" gets a little tiresome when we all know that you’re not actually laughing.
Or…
“On a side note, the Bungles get a little tiresome when we all know they’re not actually very good.”
Cue up the tired “But we swept you last year…we swept the AFC North…we swept the whole league…we swept the CFL and WNBA too…we made it you didn’t…we are amazing…we have the best WR’s, DB’s, RB, QB, Def Coordinator in the history of all sports, not just football! We RULE baby!”

Nope
The only player that the Ravens have the Bengals are worried about is Ray Rice. Other than him we’re going to dominate you this year
Ooook
You keep saying that.

we dominated you last year....unless you have stats that say we didn't sweep you or the rest of the division
what has changed? We got better, you got older and more injured….and honestly don’t try and say that you really truly believe your WR’s are better than ours….or your Corners for that matter….i’m more of a homer than most, but when your wrong your wrong and you have to admit it, unless you like getting people riled up with your tough typed words (which is probably most accurate) stop thumb thuggin’ and go back to your blog where everybody thinks you know what you’re talking about
it comes down to mind over matter....if you don't mind, it won't matter
Stat's?
30 years of inconsisent back to back winning seasons. DO you honestly think you are going to sweep the division this year?

even if we don't sweep we'll still take the AFCN crown again

dez briscoe will take that 6th spot cuz they won’t wanna lose him…. just sayin
3 yards and a pile of dust
You think you guys will keep 6 WRs?
That would make up about 1/8 of your roster, theirs no way thats happening. 4 maybe 5.

sorry for the double post….can’t contain myself

and as for Best EVER
no way….just being honest….let’s wait and see how it actually shakes down before crowning that one…they might not be the best in the league let alone EVER…specially w/our focus on the running game (which just got way better too)
it comes down to mind over matter....if you don't mind, it won't matter
Besides Bernard Scott developing, how did the running game get way better?
My dumb ass is probably missing some big signing or something but I can’t think of anything.
Or are you talking about how TO provides a threat down the field, opening up the run?

Andre will be a starter this year….i can’t believe i’m suprised you overlooked that but wow….oh yeah, and we’ll get back one of the best blocking TE’s in the league in Reggie Kelly…..

respect the WR
you know how defenses have to respect WR w/appropriate coverage? it’s something they do on every football team from gradeschool to the pro’s….w/Ocho, T.O. on opposite sides that means there will be more running lanes opened up….you tard

They’ll keep six and that’s that. We had 4 halfbacks and 2 fullbacks at the end of last year. Why is 6 receivers such a stretch?

WR don’t take nearly the beating that Backs take, so keeping 4 is smart. The Ravens had 5 halfbacks and a full back last year on the roster. I wouldn’t say 6 WR is a stretch, but go ahead and run through your roster picking your final 53 including 6 WR and you will most likely get to a point where you feel that Caldwell, Jones, or Simpson just has to go.
Yes, and any of the three would make the Ravens team

Do you guys just have to argue with everything?
If it is comparing the Ravens to the Bengals, fine, whatever. It’s all an excersize in futility anyway. But arguing about roster spots or composition? Just leave it alone!
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
MaLoR's right.
Do your homework, work through a little roster filling exercise. It’s like making a budget for your finances. You may WANT to go see three movies a month, go out drinking and dropping $45 bucks a night with your boys, or spend $10 a week at SuperCuts keeping your mullet fresh…
but somewhere along the way reality creeps in, and you have to choose some, drop others.
Being a Bungles fan, I’d put money on the mullet allowance staying.

If your team doesn't switch from a run first philosophy
I can see T.eam O.bliterator starting to run his cakehole about not being targeted enough.
You guys now have the top two premier princess WR’s in the league. Selfish and mouthy.
Good luck with that (not really).
I like that nickname
But he is always fine his first year. He saves it until the offseason to start running his mouth. As for Ocho, I just don’t think you get him. He doesn’t really break up chemistry, just pisses other fans off.

Time will tell
But I doubt that they’ll be as productive as Chad/TJ/Slim of 2005.
Agreed
This WR corps is built for the present and the future. It has gone from a major concern to a major strength. But to say that it’s the best 1. Bengals WR corps, 2. WR group in the league or 3. the best ever is going way over the top. Who knows what will play out, but crowning them anything right now is nuts. This is an experiment, and it looks good, but we’ll see how it plays out.
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
Why are you harping on this?
Chad and TO are the now. There are 4 young receivers who have potential, not named Chad, Antonio or Terrell. That would be the talk of a raving lunatic. You guys coming here and posting the amount of crap that you have are the actions of trolls. You can’t rain on this parade, it’s gonna be a good year in Cincy. Get over it.
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
Antonio Bryants bounced around and done crap in this league.
I seriously do not see what you see in the guy.
Explain this fixation to me, and try to talk me into thinking he won’t be pushed out by one of the younger WR’s in camp.
Dude flat out sucks.

go watch a few highlights of AB
He’s better than every reciever you have other than Boldin….you say he lacks consistency….he’s had a diff offensive coordinator almost every single year in the league and has had a different quarter back literally every year (out of all of them Garcia was the best arm ever throwing to him)……
it comes down to mind over matter....if you don't mind, it won't matter
I said nothing about Bryant being good. Whether I think he is or not has nothing to do with what I wrote. The poster questioned why I thought the receivers were built for the future. I think that the names I stated are older, while 4 others are younger and there is a possibility that 1 or 2 could prove to be valuable. Thanks for jumping in here and proving that the Steelers still have enough dicks roaming the internet to compete with anyone.
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
all your potential is just that, potential. you haven’t even seen anything on the field to suggest anyone on your roster can step up and replace chad or TO
They don't need to
Not this year. I realize they are just potential. They don’t need to be much more than that. However the odds of one or two of them out of the four becoming a legitimate starter is much better than the odds of one guy that the team is counting on to do it.
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
Agreed
Not the best in Franchise History, at this point. Doesn’t mean by the end of the season we won’t have a different view. I doubt too many people had the 05 team pegged as one of the best receiving corps of all time.
Actually no
I think the Browns have them on that one.

These guys are just trying to piss off the board. I had respect for you BW, coming over a few months ago and being level headed and hearing what everyone had to say about the team. You even brought it back and posted it in what I thought was a very good summary. Of course the posters took their shots, but they wouldn’t be fans if they didn’t. But you pretty much just lost nearly all the credit I had given you.

Since Marvin Lewis has been the Bengals HC, the Bengals have swept the Ravens in the division 3 times and the Ravens have done it to the Bengals once… in 2008. Overall the Ravens lead the series 15 – 13, but since Marvin Lewis has been the coach it goes the other way with the Bengals leading 9 – 5.
