07-28-10 WR Depth

WR 1: Will this be Chad's last season or last contract in Cincy? Mike Brown appears to be paving the way to drop a 33 or 34 year old Chad.

WR 2: TO's last chance to buy another last chance in the NFL. This is a 1 season rental. He needs to make enough highlight films this year to find any suitors for 2011 or 2012 (if there is a lockout).

WR3: Does Bryant spend time on the PuP in 2010? Bryant could be another bad signing from the league's smallest scouting department.

WR4/5: Caldwell verged on a breakout season in 2009 until his late season fade, will another season waiting in the wings hurt or help his development. Shipley could struggle to find playing time this season unless another WR flounders or goes down to injury.

WR 6/7: If Briscoe fails to make the team, how long will he remain on the developmental squad before being snatched away. Probably, not Long. Which means Cosby's talented contributions on special teams in 2009 might not be enough to guarantee his spot on the 2010 Bengals.

WR 8/9: Have Jones and Simpson accepted their fate yet? Barring Hall of Fame pre-seasons both Jones and Simpson are done in Cincy. Jones could be out of chances in the NFL. Simpson has avoided making ink on a police blotter and remains youthful enough for another NFL team depleted at WR to give Simpson a chance to earn a spot. Simpson could end the 2010 season in the AFC North, just not wearing Black & Orange.

John Thorton's comment on the logjam at WR

“I like Briscoe but he was injured all spring with a groin pull. Front office was scared off by that. He’s a practice squad guy unless he has great camp. If Purify makes it to camp, he’s the 6th WR cuz he’s a beast on special teams. Simpson and Caldwell fight it out. Simpson has no trade value at this point cuz he has no film.”

I do find it interesting that Thorton believes Purify has a valid shot to make the team and Briscoe is going to the practice squad.

He also had some big blocks on the Cosby return at Pit

I meant with Cosby on the Scott return.

We almost have to keep Briscoe.

He has too much upside. I think he was drafted to be the next number 1 receiver for this team. Of course, I think Simpson was too and he apparently has finally clicked. I don’t know… we just have to trust the decisions that are made at camp this year and pray that they’re right.

6th WR spot

Briscoe will go to the PS. I don’t see anyone picking him off of it since they would have to make him part of the 52 man roster. Jones, Purify and Brown are gone. 6th spot will be between Simpson and Cosby. While Cosby is a beast on teams, that really won’t mean squat since the 6th WR doesn’t dress for games. WINNER: J.SIMPSON

I was sad when you guys drafted Shipley...

It meant that Quan was probably going to lose his job.

Hopefully another team needs a return specialist.
