The Chopping Block is gigantic here fellows

The WR depth in my opinion.

1-Chad
2-Terrell
3-Antonio
4-Caldwell (the future)
5-Shipley (the future)
6-Simpson (the future)

Cut
Cosby (unfortunately but A.Jones and Shipley are justified reason's we don't need his services-practice squad)
Briscoe(practice squad)
Purify (practice squad)
M.Jones
F.Brown(obviously already done)

In my opinion Cosby is the only one that has a chance to be pecked off our practice squad just because a team has to put him on there 53 man roster to do it and he's the only one with enough worthy game tape to do that.

Briscoe

would prolly get scooped up of the PS as well….many believe he shouldn’t have fell that far to us in the draft…if we want briscoe for the future, keep him active

it comes down to mind over matter....if you don't mind, it won't matter

It's a possibility but I still think he get's cut...

He’s had injury concerns lately and compared to the upside Simpson is believed to have I don’t think he makes it …

by JamesShively on Jul 28, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see many people taking a 6th round draft pick with no snaps from our practice squad and placing them on their 52 man roster.

by smoormandiddy on Jul 28, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

The fact is that Briscoe did fall to the 6th round. Almost every team had 6 shots to take him and chose not to. Why is he more valuable to those teams now that he has not been in their offseason programs? If he is that good, he will make the Bengals roster.

by jim0ijk on Jul 28, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

agree...

…to snag him they have to sign him to their active roster. Don’t see it happening unless he comes up totally huge in training camp—and if he does, we will keep him on our roster—easy.

by goffchile on Jul 28, 2010 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Briscoe

Maybe he is better than some players now on other teams after the teams OTA,s. You just never know. Just maybe somebody didnt work out and Briscoe could be a better player. I dont like the idea of putting him on the PS, because he will surely be plcked from there.

by James Schmid the great on Jul 28, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree....

I would be surprised if he wasn’t plucked from the PS. I know a lot of people say the same as above “he was a 6th rounder so teams would have took him then”. To that I would say thats not necessarily the case. Teams may not have had a pick around the time he was projected, they may have had more pressing needs at other positions, they may have been turned off on using a pick with his character concerns, and injuries may make a team have more of a need at receiver then they expected during the draft. To simply say that if they didn’t draft him they wouldn’t take him off someone’s PS is not the case, IMO.

I don’t think anyone knows if he would be taken off the PS for sure, but I do think it is very likely. I would like to keep him, personally, because of his potential. I would rather keep him then Simpson at this point. Simpson has had plenty of chances to prove himself. I would rather give another player an oppurtunity to see what he can do. With our recent moves though I do think the chances he is placed on the PS is becoming greater, and probably the most likely scenario now. Hopefully he does sneak through and we keep him if he is placed on the PS.

by C1ncy4Life on Jul 29, 2010 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

POTENTIAL.....

Some team rebuilding will likely snag him off the PS. They will do it for the future not this year. He has plenty of talent and potential. So a team won’t be tat concerned that he missed the offseason programs. With our signings then the receivers we cut would probably make most other teams roster.

I hope we find a way to keep Briscoe because he does have the potential to be a future #1. A lot of people had Briscoe rated around the same as Shipley. With our recent signings it seems less and less likely that he makes the roster unless he has a GREAT TC and Preseason.

PS to PS....

from the get-go that was the concern w/Briscoe, he’s like a mini-housh. I would be THRILLED if we can just put him on the PS and leave the active spots open for other guys (ie: Simpson/Cosby) but i dunno

by TruWhoDey on Jul 28, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Cosby isn't eligible for the practice squad...

…which means we keep or cut him. At this point, I think if he continues to show that he can be a special teams monster and occasionally serve as a back up receiver—he makes the team over Simpson.

As much as I’d love to see Simpson come up huge in the preseason, I have my doubts about saving another roster spot for him based on his “potential.”

by goffchile on Jul 28, 2010 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

That's a valid point..

I think we can all assume this comes down to Simpson and Cosby for that final spot.. Simpson may actually be a great candidate for the practice squad if his potential is what keeps him around…I think Matt Jones is toast for sure though..

by JamesShively on Jul 28, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree on Jones...

…the only thing he brings to the table at this point is NFL experience and his size, but after the TO signing, we have more than enough—-3 established vets at 1, 2, 3, plus a big target in Gersham.

by goffchile on Jul 28, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Cosby has exceeded he number of games that can be played, making him ineligible for PS.

Cosby vs SImpson. Cosby’s issue is that he must play to make the roster.

Let us assume that Chad, TO, and Bryant make the team. this leaves 3 spots on the 53 man roster for wide recievers. Caldwell and Cosby are fighting for 2 of the spots, while Briscoe, Shipley and Simpson are competing for all three. One of the spots will be inactive on game day. Caldwell and Cosby have to contribute on game day to make the team, they will not be given the 6th developmental slot. Briscoe, Simpson and Shipley could all hold the developmental slot. However from all reports Shipley is game ready and will be competing with Cosby and Caldwell to be active. Briscoe and Simpson must only show that they can be the team’s future number one receiver to make the squad. Simpson seems more likely to be the guy, because Briscoe can go to the PS, or with his off-season groin issue, which could prevent him from being a deepe threat in the preseason, and thus proving himself.

I would approach a team for a trade of Cosby for a backup QB

Cosby is a very ST player and returner who can help a lot of teams on the field now. Yes, they could wait until he is released but they can’t be sure of that and if they need him and have a better backup than JT they could lock up the deal and get someone who can help on the field now rather than just carry clip board. He would be a fine addition to a team who is rebuilding. I would think it makes sense to get something for him if he is on the bubble in the last week of TC.

I hear Simpson seems to have clicked.

I’m not positive about that and it’s just from a few reports but if it’s true I’m stoked. Let’s see; The Ocho, TO, Bryant, and Caldwell are the locks. Brown is about to be cut. I really see no way Jones makes the roster. That leaves Shipley, Simpson and Briscoe competing for the last two spot. I would say Shipley will make it because he has such great upside and is so young. That means the battle is Simpson or Briscoe.

I envy those of you who will go to Georgetown and watch.

By a month and a half..

But I guess that might shed a little light on why it’s taken Jerome some time to develop.. While Shipley was playing big time D-1 ball… Jerome came out of D-2 ball and has been playing with the pro’s at almost the same age.. There is a big difference between D-1 ball and the NFL…Hopefully Jerome show’s he can produce and that his time with the Bengals has proved to benefit him better than D-1 a school would..

by JamesShively on Jul 28, 2010 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed...

Potential is great. At some point though you have to start seeing the Potential translate into production. I would be thrilled if Simpson finally got it. I would prefer to keep Cosby or Briscoe over Simpson at this point. I hope I’m wrong but Simpson is looking like a bust. I hope we can look back on these types of post and say what a dumb comment this was, but as of now it looks like that is the case.

by C1ncy4Life on Jul 29, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

We can speculate about all of this until the cows come home

But the great, amazing part of this is that everyone one of these players (not the first three guys) already understands completely this year is about who produces and outshines during training camp. It might come down to the very last preseason game but we are going to find out who’s hungry and REALLY WANTS to be a Bengals WR. Sure, we will regret losing at least one of two of them but lets hope those that stay contribute big in 2010 and beyond.

I love it.

Good point...

I guess the problem with so much depth, is that you cannot keep every player. I think we are all very happy to be in the situation, finally. Someone who has a lot of potential (Briscoe), who has already shown they can produce at the highest level of competition (Cosby), or someone that has all the physical talent and a high draft pick (Simpson) will not make this team. I agree:

I LOVE IT TOO!

Briscoe

might get the PUP tag

by Primal on Jul 28, 2010 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

it would be a smart move

even if the “injury” is a stubbed toe. I know everybody else had 5 or 6 chances to take him and didn’t, but all it takes to lose him from the PS is just one team to run into a rash of injuries that sends 2 or 3 of their active receivers to the IR. If we’re looking to him to be an investment for the future, we can’t dangle him in front of the rest of the league’s noses like that. Remember Chris Pressley?

by Mr. X on Jul 28, 2010 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

This is exactly what I'm thinking about Briscoe.

He has a ton of potential, but so does Simpson. Either one of them is likely to be snatched up.

Are you able to put players on the IR for dumb things? If so, I think that’s the best idea.

Please stop reminding us...

We kept Fatso, made a present of Chris Pressley, and now are planning to start the guy we cut completely (Fui). Remember “Hard Knocks?” Didn’t they say Fui just didn’t have the talent?

by bigoldguy on Jul 29, 2010 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Fui is a better athlete than Pressley

I hear that he has really improved in his time away and has a more aggressive attitude. I think he can be very effective. We will just have to see.

Use a backup tackle at FB

to hit the hole or stay in and pass protect.

We don’t go with a standard FB. There aren’t a lot of linebackers who would want to take on Roland with a full head of steam.

Then put Fui to the PS as the cowbell backup HB if Benson gets injured.

That opens up another spot for a skill player/special team WR and Briscoe doesn’t get exposed to waivers.

I know nobody wanted to loose Pressley last year but he gained all of 2 yards for Tampa Bay. Averaged 1 foot/game.

Just need someone who can take on a linebacker.

by StLBengal on Jul 29, 2010 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

I can't decide whether I love or hate the idea of Roland at FB.

On one hand, he can block very well. On the other hand, I like a bit of mobility at FB.

What about Coats there? He did pretty well there in the past. He can be emergency TE and starting FB. If he gets hurt then Roland can be the reserve FB.

I would prefer to keep an extra HB instead of a Special Teams WR. We could then keep Benson, Scott, Leonard and an emergency reserve.

I dont agree..

why take a chance of Roland getting hurt when he may be our starting RT,he can easily roll a ankle going in to the pile, but I dont mine sending Coats,no loss no gain in that situation.

by Primal on Jul 29, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay. Not Roland

But a backup o-line. Can’t imagine Ray Lewis would want to take on Andre Smith or Collins with a full head of steam either. Or Luigs.

Just trying to save a position on the 53. Obviously not a real FB working with the running backs but we don’t ask much more from the position than protect Palmer and block for Benson anyway.

That’s what o-line’s do.

by StLBengal on Jul 29, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

You need some sort of mobility at FB.

That's not true.

I could see Luigs doing this. As a center, he’s acutely focused on the snap count, and centers tend to have a slit second difference in reaction time compared to a tackle or most guards. Wind him up, set him on the ground behind the QB and spring him into action.

Nobody thought the Fridge Perry was more than a gimmick until he punched through for TD after TD.

LOL.

I wouldn't even give a backup o-line FB the ball

except as a gimmick.

It’s not a traditional FB role but I think they could be effective at the more limited FB core responsibility – blocking. And it frees up a special team/skill spot on the roster.

A lot of FBs in the league seldom if ever see the ball. Deon Anderson(Dal), Dave Thomas (NO), Dan Kreider(ARZ), etc. never touched the ball last year.

Jeremi Johnson had 4 carries and 6 receptions for less than 50 yards total. And a fumble.

by StLBengal on Jul 30, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

But imagine Roland or Luigs on a goal line run plowing through the defense for a 1-yard TD.

Winner.

On a more serious note, it’s definitely something worth looking at for Marvin and co. I still like a bit of a receiving threat out of the backfield like Fui or Coats (his hands aren’t great but are still decent regardless of how many balls he dropped last year.) That can take some pressure off Carson and give him one more place to spread the ball to.
