The Search for a new backup QB

Jeff_rowe--nfl_small_500_450_medium

via prod.static.bengals.clubs.nfl.com

(REMEMBER JEFF ROWE?  HE'S STILL AVAILABLE FOR DELIVERY)

 *#*#*#*#*#

If you watched JT O'Sullivan's performance on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, then you know for certain he should never, ever, never-ever be allowed to take a snap as a Cincinnati Bengal, ever, ever, again.

I decided to take a stab at looking at the free market and figure out if we actually have any viable free agents out there that would be an immediate upgrade (Andre Smith as QB would be an immediate upgrade, but you get my meaning) as someone able to take the reigns should Carson have to leave a game.

Barring QBs that still have a team jersey and paycheck, at least until the 53 man cutdown day arrives, here's our picks:

Star-divide

This is the most current list of free agent QB I could find http://www.kffl.com/static/nfl/features/freeagents/fa.php

If there are others you know about, or if any of these guys were recently snatched up, please let me know.

Todd Collins UFA (Cut) Washington Redskins Free Agent

When Jason Cambell was sucking it up last year, Collins went in.  We know that with McNabb in the house the Skins had to let someone go.  His stats are lackluster but compared to JTO'S, might be a good option.

QB Daunte Culpepper UFA Detroit Lions Free Agent

I have mixed emotions about Culpepper.  I don't think he's got much left in the tank.  Better than JTO'S, probably.  Able to win games, Probably not.

QB Jeff Garcia UFA (Cut) Oakland Raiders Free Agent

Garcia has been on our radar for a while now.  He would be an upgrade.

QB Matt Gutierrez UFA (Cut) Kansas City Chiefs Free Agent

Well, the Chefs cut him. Need I say more?  OK, he's been injured for a long time, and reeks of medocrity.  Moving on.

QB Gibran Hamdan Signed Buffalo Bills CFL

In june, Hamdan announced his retirement from Pro ball.  Moving on.

QB Josh McCown UFA Carolina Panthers Free Agent

This one has some interest value.  He's actually in the UFL for Hartford.  This kids got some game to him.  I think he'd be an upgrade on the cheap.

QB Mike Reilly UFA (Cut) St. Louis Rams Free Agent

Reilly got picked up for a stint by the Seahawks in the spring, then dumped.  There's low, very low interest level in him by anyone.  I don't see him as an upgrade.

QB Jeff Rowe UFA (Cut) New England Patriots Free Agent

Rowe's been around, including here.  I see him as a possibility to upgrade at backup and the system would not be completely unknown to him.

QB D.J. Shockley UFA (Cut) Atlanta Falcons Free Agent

Not very much info about someone that is as uninteresting as shockley.  Do you know anything about him?

QB Brian St. Pierre UFA Arizona Cardinals Free Agent

He had a back injury last year, and the Cards opted to not sign him back up.  Do they know something that would mean stay away?  Or if given enough time could he be ready in 2010?  Lots of ?????

QB Mike TeelNew player news! UFA (Cut) New England Patriots Free Agent

Picked up by Chicago and promptly tore a hammy.  Pass.

-----------

Other than that, what other options are there left?  Did Kitna look good last Sunday or what?  (that should get some responses).

How 'bout we search for a new STARTING QB

Baby Steps

Let me know if you can find someone before the season starts that would be better than Carson. I’d be up for looking at the 2011 draft class regardless.

Jeff Garcia

would be great!

Or we get rid of both J. Palmer and JT ( I cannot believe we pay him) and keep Matt Jones as an emergency WR/QB.. Whatdya think?

I’ll second the JG train but I’m not really in that big a hurry to get rid of JP yet. He can at least play out the preseason. JTO tho, please, PLEASE get rid of yesterday.

by FriarBob on Aug 10, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

J.Palmer was atrocious and should be the first guy to get cut.

That pick that he threw against to that Brandon Sharp (the Cowboy linebacker) was horrible. It’s not like he was hiding or something, or that he made a particularly good play on the ball. He was standing there. And Jordan clearly didn’t even see him.

This is our year!

Jordan wouldn’t even be in an NFL camp!!!!! Carson goes down, this team doesn’t have a chance.

It’s called a zone blitz for a reason, dude.

And it works for a reason, dude.

Aside from maybe one or two exceptions in the entire history of the NFL, EVERY newbie QB struggles against that scheme for awhile. Peyton Manning, who some tried this last year to anoint as the greatest QB of all time (not really, but that’s not the point either), struggled against it for nearly a decade. I’m not going to throw a guy under the bus — a guy who also clearly and enormously outplayed the other QB who got major playing time, by the way — for making a newbie mistake when he is, interestingly enough, still just that: a newbie.

by FriarBob on Aug 11, 2010 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Were we watching the same game?

A bad throw is a bad throw, no matter how you try to dress it up. And as far as comparing Jordan to JT, it’s an apples to oranges scenario. Jordan faced the 3rd string D, and JT faced the 2nd string D.

And, If I have this straight, you want to cut a 10 year veteran in the league for a guy who, in your own words, is a “newbie” and by your own admission can’t read defenses very well. I’m not going to crown JT as our solution to the backup QB, but I feel much more comfortable with him, than with Jordan back there if Carson went down. Maybe in another year or two Jordan would be a better option, but that didn’t look like the case last Sunday.

Regardless, the best option, I think, is to pick up a FA QB as UpState Mike suggests, though that doesn’t seem very likely.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Aug 11, 2010 2:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I really would like to ask you the same question.

Look, I agree that Jordan didn’t do well. He clearly shouldn’t be kept as our actual backup. Absolutely not in any way shape or form. Not unless, of course, the light switch turns on in the next week or two and he does a TON better in the next few games. But I’m also willing to give him more time to improve because what he DID show was a ton of potential. He showed leadership. He had authority on his passes — sure, not all of them were on target or caught, but he actually threw most of them with authority, crisp spirals with some power behind the ball. And at least his second interception was a “flutter ball”. Can’t remember for sure on the first now. But it was the only one (or ones) I saw him throw all night that did NOT have power and crispness behind them. He apparently threw it and saw the LB just a half a second too late and seemingly tried to double-clutch but failed to hang onto the ball. He IS bad right now, but he also still has at least some potential. Let him stay on as the #3, at least for a few more weeks. If we need his roster spot on cutdown day, then if he’s still eligible maybe try to get him back on the practice squad, if not, oh well, better luck elsewhere buddy.

In contrast, Just Terrible O’Sullivan sucked so bad that if you tried to use him as a vacuum cleaner he’d rip your carpet right off the floor. He was actually WORSE than Jordan, which is very hard to do. But he was. He threw an interception himself that was even more boneheaded. He literally played pitch and catch with the safety. The ball wasn’t even close to his supposedly intended target. He is immobile and couldn’t scramble away from pressure — and with our current backup OL and maybe even our starting one, that’s a critical skill to have. He had exactly zero authority on his passes. I could throw a better spiral and I have lineman hands — way too small to be an actual NFL QB. And this is a guy who has already had six teams, including teams that when he left them were flat out terrible and/or had complete jokes as their starting QB. (Seriously, this guy couldn’t beat out Aaron Brooks? That’s almost as bad as failing to beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick.) The guy is not even a has-been, he’s a never was. And he’s also a never will be. He showed absolutely NO potential whatsoever.

And while yes JTO “technically” faced the “second string” D, the difference between second and third string is usually not THAT dramatic. And Jordan also had the “third string” offense to work with. Unless you want to postulate that our entire third string offense is better than our second team offense and they just carried Jordan along for the ride, then your “apples to oranges” line is pure bunk.

I’d rather cut JTO and give JP a bit more practice time (in the hopes it does some good) than waste another snap on a player who has ZERO chance of being a quality backup for us. Jordan may only have a 10% chance, but that’s better than zero.

Now the best option of all, yes, is to find another backup entirely. I’m thinking, based on the weirdo shenanigans of the Jets, that if they truly are determined to keep Brunell as their backup QB then Clemens may be available come cutdown day, or maybe even sooner. I’d say give him a shot, especially if we can get him while there’s still enough time in training camp to actually evaluate him. He wasn’t really that bad and giving him the potential of getting revenge on the Mangenius who pumped and dumped him would be a good motivator. Maybe that’s enough for him to turn out OK. At the worst, he can’t be worse than JTO, though he might also not be better than JP.

by FriarBob on Aug 11, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Or if we can get Kitna back somehow, I’d go for that as well.

But in the meantime, give the practice snaps to somebody who at least has a chance of improvement. Get rid of JTO. He’s an experiment that has clearly already failed. JP may also be in the process, but he’s not there yet. Give him the practice time and hope it does some good, and if not, grab Kitna or Clemens or whomever else is decent and available on cutdown day.

by FriarBob on Aug 11, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I've been saying this for a while

ever since JP got here. He never ever gets to play with the 1st string and rarely gets to play with the 2nd string. All he does during practices is warm his arm up and that’s it, besides studying the plays. He looked a lot better than JT O’sucky, and that is not saying much, but at least we know now that he deserves to play before JT O’sucky.
We do need a better backup though.

by WHYUS!! on Aug 11, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

eh

Jordan could be a #3 QB for us, but from my view it’s a waste of a roster spot. I would never bet on 10% odds, and I sure don’t think that it’s worth it to save a spot for somebody who has a 10% chance of being servicable. I’d rather go 7 deep at WR to keep Cosby on the team than keep Jordan, but that’s just my opinion.

The Bottom line that this team needs to find a new backup for Carson. Everybody agrees on that.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Aug 11, 2010 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't understand?

We are saying get rid of JTO and keep JP and then keep 7WRs. Assuming we can’t pick up somebody better to replace them both. IMO, JP seems to be a better QB without the playing time or experience.
And you think otherwise? That’s crazy, b/c 10% is still better than 0% in JTO, no matter how you look at it.

by WHYUS!! on Aug 11, 2010 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Get rid of them both and find somebody who can actually do the job.

I would say get rid of them both, find a new backup, and pray that the worst doesn’t happen. I don’t think Jordan is better than JT at this point in his career (regardless of potential), so if I had to choose between the two, I would take JT, since I think he would be more ready to fill in if Carson went down. Jordan needs at least a year before he could even be considered capable of being on an NFL roster, and I don’t think that he has enough potential to validate us keeping a roster spot open for him.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Aug 11, 2010 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That is not what I saw in the game.

JP was definitely better than JT O’suckalot. Not by much, but was better, IMO… and your entitled to yours.
We definitely need someone better though.

by WHYUS!! on Aug 11, 2010 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

We definitely need someone better though.

That’s the bottom line for this team. They need somebody better at backup QB, so it’s a moot point about which crappy backup you’d rather have.

I hope they find a good FA QB once the teams have made their cuts.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Aug 11, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Either Garcia or McCown

would be great options. Garcia is obviously the better of the two, but McCown is a lot younger and could prove to be a great back up.

by The Dealio on Aug 10, 2010 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

Carson needs a good back up.

Carson played with more confidence when he had Kitna backing him up. I know Kitna is not an elite starting QB but he was pretty decent. Maybe Palmer needs a solid back up for him to play up to his potential.

by jimbasa on Aug 10, 2010 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

atleast a competent backup

the biggest benefit to having Kitna back him up was that atleast he trusted Kitna. Meaning when he hits the sidelines Kitna atleast knew what he was talking about w/formations and coverages, AND Carson trusted that advice. I can’t see him coming to the sidelines and bouncing questions/adjustments off of JT or Lil Buddy…..

it comes down to mind over matter....if you don't mind, it won't matter

by TruWhoDey on Aug 10, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Gino Guidugli

seriously though, if Carson goes down we are in deep poop. Whether we have Garcia or McCown or O’Sully or Jordan. I am a lot more trusting in Carson than many others and I feel if the OLine could just protect him he will prove to be a top 6 QB in the league. Now, he is getting older and it is time to be looking for a longterm replacement and if that person becomes an upgrade, then so be it.

Personally I would be targeting someone a bit more mobile if we did want a backup.

by kennythered on Aug 10, 2010 1:46 PM EDT reply actions

I have a lot of trust in Carson's abilities too

When he was turned loose last year on game winning drives, he was excellent. When he was subject to Brat’s playcalling… well, it left something to be desired. I think he’s still the same guy, he’s just been handcuffed by shoddy play calling and medicore pass protection

by The Dealio on Aug 10, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Carson still has it

The Bengals really ought to get back to the no-huddle and let Palmer be the play caller. It’s clear that he was at his best last year, when he was in control of the plays.

J.T. and little brother are not NFL quarterbacks who could lead this team in case anything happens to #9.

A name that I do not see on here is Kellen Cleamons who is with the Jets and Rex Ryan made it crystal clear today Mark Brunell is the #2. I would give Jordan and J.T. two more chances to show that they are capable QB’s who can somewhat lead this team in case something happens. What we saw last Sunday was horrible and no wonder Marvin was looking like he was ready to snatch both of them out the game and put Matt Jones in there…………I guarantee he could not have played any worse than those two. The Bengals have addressed RB problem and there is a monster black hole behind 9.

Maybe the Bengals FO are worried about hurtning JTO's and Jordan's feelings

It would explain why you’d keep either one of them. Except that Jordan looks like his older brother. He’s no Eli, that’s for sure.

The "WEAK" Spot!

Been saying this since camp began! Neither JT, nor Junior Palmer should be in the NFL.. I was willing to over look my feelings if they showed up Sunday, but they only confirmed my worst fear. At this point my vote would go to Jeff Garcia – seasoned, steady, dependable. And in full swing of the season, you need “senior” leadership to step in if your star QB goes down. I think he would make me feel confident we could still win!

by Law1951 on Aug 10, 2010 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

Didn't Culpepper go to the UFL?

I am a Dolphins fan, but I love the Bengals too. That preseason game really got me worried as far as the QB situation goes. If Carson goes down, the Bengals are screwed with their current set up.

For a few seconds, this place was Armageddon.

Thing is, T.O. and Bryant would kill him. Not a good move.

Honestly, if things go well with the the Cowboy’s third and fourth QBs, Kitna may hit the streets too. They were playing decently two days ago, so who knows. Might possibly happen.

And no. Not Daunte. Not again. Not ever again. That sucked.

Trade for Troy

Troy Smith will probably be a third string QB in Baltimore this year and may be available for a trade. He was scheduled to be the starting QB before he got sick or injured ahead of Flacco. The rest is history for Troy. He’s talented, can run and has a gun. Lets get him.
Ravens probably won’t trade to a division rival.

My Take...

I know you all seen the 1st preseason game, and you have doubts, but the first worry from you guys should be RT and LT,what I seen was Carson pressured from BOTH sides of the line, and if thats a sign of anything to come, you wont care whos the #2 QB cause the season is lost without Carson,I mean did you get the shakes when 3 guys sent him down and bent him 3 ways on the ground? And thats just his second series in,so that should be the discussion, lets face it,Roland is way to slow for a tackle, and it only takes one good hit,and bye bye season.

One more note, was it just me or did Odom looked like he was getting man handled, the guy looked like he had no push whatsoever,I sure hope it was just rust cause they were pushing him around like a practice dummy.

one fact most cincinnati fans will agree on in 2010

Of all the roster positions, QB is lacking depth more so than any other position on the 2010 Bengals.

QB2 and QB3 should not even be in stripes. Anything happens to Carson, Cincy will need to sign someone to start.

Panther's QB depth chart

Right now it reads as follows:

1. Matt Moore
2. Hunter Cantwell
3. Jimmy Clausen

Anybody else see that the odd man out will be Tony Pike. If they PS him, I think the pickup is a no-brainer. I know that he will not provide the veteran presence that a Jon Kitna would, but I think he is a project that would develop into a good backup in 2-3 seasons.

My dream scenario is a that we get Pike off the PS and Kitna gets pushed out in Dallas as well. Pipe dream? Maybe, but a couple months back the “impossible” best scenario was to sign TO and Bryant.

by klink on Aug 11, 2010 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

Tony Pike would be interesting, but Kitna would be ideal

Pike would be an upgrade and could be a very good QB backup for us at some point, but I don’t see him helping us win a ring this year.

Kitna on the other hand, is a vet. He is very able to lead this team to a victory in a game. He also mentored Palmer before Palmer took his job. That means he would is uniquely able to talk about what Palmer is now doing differently, and help him return back to his 2005 form. And as Backup QB, he can talk about reads and opportunities at the same level as Palmer. That’s going to be hard to find in any other backup. The more I think about it, the more I think he’s worth making a deal with the Cowboys for. They don’t really need him, and I’m sure we could work a deal out if it doesn’t look likely they will release him soon. Serendipity.

This would go a long way

toward Carson getting his mind right. It’s just not a move I can see Mike Brown making. It’s far too logical.

I had a dream last night Carson broke his ankle in Wk. 1 and we signed JaMarcus Russell, who played out a 2-14 season at 305 lbs.

I’d love to trade for Kitna, but good luck getting Mikey to cough up anything.

And unfortunately as much as I wish it was otherwise, they brought in Kitna specifically to mentor Romo. I don’t think he’ll actually be available. I’d love to be wrong here tho.

by sexsalad on Aug 11, 2010 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That depends on exactly what Dallas most values from him.

If Dallas is primarily looking for a good backup who can come in and play a few games and survive a short-term injury to Romo, then they don’t need Kitna. They have cheaper, younger alternatives who could continue to develop with the second team and the taxi squad in the mean time and also work towards becoming reasonable long-term replacements just in case Romo suddenly and unexpectedly has a career-ending injury. In this scenario, we could probably get him for a 6th-7th rounder or maybe even get lucky and sign him directly if they terminate his contract on cutdown day. (At least Kitna is a veteran and wouldn’t be on waivers when we’d have to worry about ~20 other teams trying to claim him first.)

But if they are looking for the veteran mentorship for Romo then it will be MUCH harder to grab him. In that case, there is basically no chance he is available for free on cutdown day. And we’d probably have to give up significantly more to get him. Probably a 4th or 5th rounder, maybe some sort of conditional pick, or maybe a player if there was somebody we had they would actually want. What with the different schemes and the fact that their roster is quite deep, I can’t think of anybody we could afford to give up they’d actually want… but stranger things have happened, so I won’t rule it out entirely either. Probably only semi-realistic scenario here would be if both our kickers are doing pretty well and theirs keeps squeaking 17 yarders through by a hair and shanking 35+ yarders almost into the corner seats.

I doubt JJ is worried about someone

mentoring Romeo. He’s been in the league for a few seasons now. If this new kid plays as well as he has against the Bengals, then JJ probably will cut Kitna to save money. He’s a tight-ass too, when it comes to payroll. We’ll see.

Kitna seems like a logical cut, that's why I'm optimistic

Now, whether the FO thinks it’s worth it is another story. I do know that the only three people who think JT O’suckagain played well last Sunday were:
- His Mom
- His Agent
-That old barber guy from Trading Places that liked ‘Sexual Chocolate’ (“He Good! He Good!”)

Let's all root for the new kid (can't think of his name for the life of me) in the preseason.

The only way we have a shot at Kitna is if he keeps up that level of play.

Worried? No. I agree he’s almost certainly not worried about “needing” to mentor Romo.

But it’s not like Drew NEEDED Brunell around to mentor him the last two years. Nor did Romo necessarily “need” Kitna. But it can still helpful to have a veteran around who’d been around the block several times (and actually was pretty decent most of his years) who can discuss situations, plan good strategy, and give good advice.

They’ve publicly stated that the reason for bringing in Kitna was as much to mentor Romo as to back him up. If they change their minds, then we’ve got a shot at him. If not, then unless we beg for him and pay through the nose, we don’t.

Bring on Garcia

Anyone would be an upgrade from we got Sunday. If Carson goes down we’re in deep shit.

An early preseason game

after one week of practice doesn’t mean anyone’s going to get cut and have to start over with a new body to learn the playbook.

Were they good? No.
Do they need to do better? Yes.
Should we just cut them after a couple of series on Sunday? Not going to happen.

I'm beginning to warm up to this idea...

Pick up a legitimate number 2, get rid of JTO and JP and go 7 deep at WR. The seventh wideout could be Matt Jones (who showed he really wants a spot by coming up with a few nice catches that game) and he could be the disaster QB (although I really hope that the top 2 wouldn’t get injured.) At some point you have to think this; how much better would JP be in a regular season game than having Matt Jones run some weird Wildcat-like formation?

I think most of us agree Jordie & JTO are both terrible.....

I’d take any local college kid over both of them – even from a lower end college like UC or Miami.

Maybe we can get the Georgetown College qb to replace one of them? :-)

It’s a position (backup qb) that the team refuses to address.
But unless Carson gets hurt, it won’t matter.

thats how the FO works.. wait until it pops up, then deal with it.

Mike Brown was never a boy scout. He missed the whole ‘preparedness’ thing..

Jordon wasn't HORRIBLE

Not sure if that is good enough, but JTO must go. He’s stinking up the team. He must have some compromising pictures of Mike Brown and a Piggy Bank.

The Chicago Bears would love to have a veteran backup quarterback who knows Mike Martz’s offense and could mentor Jay Cutler. But they’re not going to get one.

There are really only two former Martz quarterbacks who would make sense in the backup role in Chicago: Marc Bulger and Trent Green. (The recently retired Kurt Warner would be nice, of course, but if the Bears could get him he’d be the starter, not Cutler’s backup.) Bulger, however, is backing up Joe Flacco in Baltimore, and Green has decided not to play for the Bears.

Green’s agent, Brad Blank, told NFL Network that the Bears made Green an offer, but they didn’t offer any guaranteed money, and Green saw no reason to uproot his family and head to Chicago if the Bears wouldn’t promise him anything.

“We declined their offer based on the fact there were no guarantees involved,” Blank said.

Green knows he’s past his prime and isn’t looking for a multimillion-dollar contract, but he would like the Bears to at least give him a six-figure signing bonus to make it worth his while to head to Chicago for the rest of the preseason. The frugal Bears aren’t willing to do that, and that means they won’t get their veteran backup.
