Bengals Terminate Antonio Bryant's Contract; Officially Place Gibril Wilson On IR
Weeks before this fine Sunday afternoon, we've kept hearing that the Bengals are likely cutting ties with Bryant. While it made sense, considering the team rebuilt their weapons in the passing game, it still didn't make sense on other fronts. Couldn't the Bengals just place him on IR? With Owens only paying a one-year contract and Chad Ochocinco entering an option year in 2011, it's possible the team would need Bryant next year. Would Mike Brown really eat the money given to Bryant, or would he find some way to have his investment returned?
In truth, Bryant's lack of participation put the team in a bind while figuring out what their wide receiver roster would look like in 2010. What talented receiver would they have to dump for a guy that's simply not playing?
Either way, the question on Bryant is answered.
According to Joe Reedy, the Bengals terminated the contract to Antonio Bryant Sunday afternoon.
After signing Bryant to a four-year deal with $28 million with $8 million guaranteed, the former Bengals wide receiver was plagued by a knee injury that he simply wasn't ready to overcome. Along with Terrell Owens signing, the Bengals drafted Jermaine Gresham at tight end and Jordan Shipley, giving the team enough weapons in the passing game to make Bryant worthless in keeping around.
This, of course, brings up questions.
Why didn't the Bengals know about Bryant's knee issue and if they did, why did they sign him anyway? Why did the Bengals allow Bryant to practice during the first day of Training Camp, only to make him ineligible for the Physically Unable to Perform list that would have granted the team a roster exemption through the first six weeks of the season? He wouldn't practice again after that.
The Enquirer's Joe Reedy says that (unofficially), the Bengals have eaten $6.95 million on Bryant.
Along with Bryant, the Bengals also cut long snapper Mike Windt and officially placed safety Gibril Wilson on IR, pushing their roster down to 77. The team will have to make two additional cuts before 4 PM this Tuesday.

Sucks for both sides
Sucks for Bryant because he has some talent but his injury just refuses to heal.
Sucks for the Bengals because they blew over six mil on him for him not to even play.
Sucks for the fans for having to go through this shit.
Doesn't suck that bad for Bryant.
He still walks away a millionaire.
I agree 100%!!
Brown is a clueless moron. He envisions himself as following in his father’s footsteps, but in reality he couldn’t carry his father’s jock. From my perspective the best part of this is that it costs Brown the six million.
Sorry Bengals fans for being mean spirited. I just really feel for you guys — you have an idiot owner and there is not a damn thing that you can do about it. Hopefully Brown doesn’t have any heirs.

The Bengals were completely tricked.
He juiced himself up to make it look like his knee was fine while he was working out, got his 7.5 million guaranteed and then became a worthless piece of trash. He even practiced once so that the PUP wasn’t an option.
Just a conspiracy theory but it makes sense, doesn’t it?

I agree
The whole thing has been fishy since the start of camp. He passed the physical with duct tape and pain killers and really screwed us. I can’t say I blame him because that is alot of money but it still sucks. The worst part is if he is not picked up he will probably file a complaint with the league and get even more money.
It’s BS.
I know I’m not supposed to hate the player, just the game. But Ehff Bryant. Think of what we could have on this team for that money.
by steve whodey on Aug 29, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions
But who's at fault?
You can’t blame Bryant for trying to get paid — again and again. There’s only one person to blame, and that’s Mike Brown. He wasn’t smart enough to learn from other team’s mistakes in signing Bryant and then didn’t bother to have sufficient medical checks done to protect his potential investment. Once again, clueless moron.

No I don’t blame him. Who wouldn’t do the same for that money. But still, Ehff him. I could have had some much needed help at the Oline for that money.

Wow...
So you’re saying Mike Brown has to be tricked into doing something stupid? Not likely. Very not likely.
Desperate
I think the Bengals were more desperate to rebuild their passing game, that they tried to sign what they perceived as the best available WR.

Difference maker is draft picks weren't involved
Mikey hates to give up those, Boldin really was never an option for us.
At the end of the day, we ended up giving away our 1st round pick for Boldin, an extra 2nd and 5th and moved up in the 3rd and 4th round. Damn good deal to me.
I agree completely. In other words, we trade-raped Arizona

Not necessarily a physical, wrong word, my bad.
Gresham has not played in a meaningful football game in nearly two years because of a major knee injury. I think he has even more of a risk of being injured than Boldin does right now. Get real man. You are really trying to say that two rookies who have NOT DONE ANYTHING in the NFL are better than Boldin.

By better you mean
Become the leader in receptions for the franchise (Boldin is this for the Cardinals), make multiple Pro Bowls, become a foundational piece for a Super Bowl appearance and be a leader of men in the locker room and inspire your teammates on the field. You can predict all this from 2 players that were hurt at the collegiate level. Don’t be rediculous.
It's ridiculous
And it’s easy to look like a pro bowl receiver when the guy starting opposite of you is arguably the best current WR. We’ll see what happens when he’s going up against teams’ best corners. Boldin isn’t the greatest receiver in the game. If you wanna see what happens to #2 receivers that think they’re #1s check out hpushmanzadeh’s stats in Seattle last year.
RIP Slim.
by brandone on Aug 29, 2010 7:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Please!!!
How many Cardinals games have you watch over the years……..let me guess ……not many. I didn’t say Boldin was the greatest WR in the game. What I am saying it that Boldin has been an outstanding player. His stats line up with the best of WR’s in the game on per game basis for TD’s and receptions the last 3 years. For this to be dismissed by Bengal fans is……. short sighted.
As for the Houshmandzadeh comparison———-Housh has never been the run after catch player Boldin has been or is now. Boldin has been the undisputed #1 WR in 2003, 2004 and 2005 before Fitzgerald stated to play like the #3 pick in a draft. Coaches have run their passing game thru Q because of his RAC ability and toughness.
You’d better hope Shipley developes into the type that Housh was. Housh has yet to be replaced in Cincy.
Are you serious?
Housh has racked up some serious YAC when he was with us. And he was leading the NFL in 08 with receptions up until the end of the season when Wes Welker took that by one reception. And he had Ocho on the other side.
And for Shipely, we also have Greshem and Coffman to go thru the middle and that is something that Housh and Ocho didn’t have.Oh, btw, Also TO opposite Ocho. With the above mentioned, Shipely doesn’t have to be like Housh his first year. But he’ll be descent. I’ll lay money on it. Unless he gets hurt.
LMAO talk about kool aid
a locker room leader!!???? lmao. We’ll see how good Boldin is when he’s not lining up with Fitzgerald. He’ll draw double coverage more with Baltimore because he’s the Raven’s best receiver. HE’S NOT LARRY FITZGERALD!!!
I know you all will just say I'm a Ravens fan
but can anyone that isn’t wasted or high actually believe that they’d rather have two rookies who’ve never played a snap in the NFL rather than a proven All-Pro WR? I mean cmon thats just crazy
by TurtlePower88 on Aug 29, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd rather have them on this team.
Shipley is google to be good. I don’t care if you think so or not. And with ocho and Owens, we don’t need another all pro. So yes, I’d rather have Shipley who had special teams value and is a solid slot guy and Atkins who everyone in the country believes is the steal of the draft. If our receiving core wasn’t as well off as it is now, maybe I’d feel differently, but for this team over the next few years I’d rather have Shipley and Atkins than boldin.
RIP Slim.

Atkins who everyone in the country believes is the steal of the draft.
Funny, I seem to hear this exact same thing about one player from every fan of all the teams in the league. If it means anything to you, everyone in the country has said that David Reed is the steal of the draft.
with geno atkins, it’s very likely true. the guy has been a dominant force so far in the preseason, and has already recorded 4.5 sacks from the defensive tackle position; yes, i realize that’s mostly against scrubs, but even against scrubs 4.5 sacks in 3 games is a pretty good statistic from a tackle.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!

I'd much rather have them
If only for their longevity. Boldin’s not going to be playing too much longer, the two of them probably still have a decade’s worth of playtime in their systems, if not more.
The average NFL career is 3.5 years
So to predict these guy’s will play well into a decade is….. (I’ll be kind) a stretch. Again you fail to look at both players collegiate careers objectively.
You're pathetic by the way
Held some respect for both you and Baltimore Warrior before this blog post, long gone now. You came over to glean some issues and Baltimore Warrior was polite in his first visit for some basic information.
Why bring up collegiate careers? This is the NFL, college means little. See: Peter Warrick.
No, neither have taken a snap in the season, but arguing that preseason means nothing is also just as asinine. The records mean nothing, but that doesn’t mean the things the first-team offense does. Shipley and Gresham have both performed well thus far. I’m optimistic it will continue into the year and if they turn around and pull a Caldwell, I’ll willingly eat crow. If they continue to contribute like they have in the preseason, it’ll be raven I’m eating instead.

Being healthy is a part of this conversation
If a player couldn’t stay healthy in college there’s a chance he will have troube staying healthy at the pro level. This is big boy football now! Just saying. You introduced it into the discussion Doc stratch.
Where'd I introduce it?
If it had anything to do with Boldin, I was making note of the fact that Boldin’s 29 and on the back end of his career.

Gotcha
Still, it’s not really a big deal, in the grand scheme of things. Mike Brown is the only person that lost anything here — his own money. The Bengals still have their first team offense figured.
And Shipley is probably as good, if not miles better than Bryant.

I understand. Just when the signing happened a few months ago, the hype around here was out the roof, only to have this happen. I never had a good feeling about this guy, even before he came to Cinci.
And Shipley is probably as good, if not miles better than Bryant.
Until he makes an NFL catch in the regular season, it is unfair to say this about a rookie who has not done anything. He could be, but right now he is nothing. Should be a solid player though and I agree that he probably fits the slot position alot better than Bryant would.
Fair enough
You’re right about Shipley not taking a regular season snap.
Still, watch this guy as much as you can — well, if you want to obessively check out Bengals players like us. :) You’ll know what I’m talking about.

Oh I am well aware of what Shipley brings. I wanted this guy to be drafted by the Ravens and when you guys took him, I knew it would cause problems down the road. He is an elite athlete, no argument about that.
Shipley could end up like
Wes Welker. The Pats’ Julian Edelman is a Welker clone and Shipley looks to have the same skill set.
However, to compare Bryant or any of those rooks to Boldin is just way too loyal to your team. Boldin will take coverage away from the rest of the Ravens receivers and make everyone on the field better, which cannot be denied.
But yes, until we beat and dethrone Cincy, you are the AFC Defending Champs. See you week 2. Good luck in week one, we both have a tough two weeks to start the season. Either way, I’d refer the Bengals win over the Steelers any day. One thing we can both agree on, eh?

Geez, more Welker comparisons
Why does every white receiver in the NFL have to be compared to every other good white receiver? Let Jordan Shipley be Jordan Shipley, not Wes Welker (though anything close to Welker’s contribution towards his team would be very much appreciated).
Boldin helps, I won’t deny it, I’m just tired of listening to the “OMG THEY SIGNED BOLDIN RAVENS ARE SUPERBOWL BOUND” garbage spewed by the media near-weekly through the offseason. It’s made me incredibly embittered towards your team, moreso than a healthy degree. I’ve even found myself siding with Steelers fans on occasion because of it.
I’ve been incredibly embittered towards the Jets too for nearly-similar reasons.

How do you know this? Dickson was a 3rd round pick, not a 6th. I bet you thought that Gates, Daniels, Witten, Cooley and so on were going to be average, right? Tight End is one of the easier positions in the NFL to be a great contributor at for guys taken later in the draft.
Exactly TE is meant for players who can’t cut it as an OL or a WR, it serves as a hybrid.

Talking talent
Gresham was rated the #1or 2 rated TE coming out while Dickson was rated 4/5 depending on publication you read. I’ve watch Greasham in the Bengals scheme…..he’s a talent with upside. He’s been flexed outside the numbers by Bratkowski. I don’t see a suddenness, an exploisiveness to his game. Maybe he’s still in the process of recovering from his knee injury.
Dickson, considering where he was drafted, his suddenness, his ability to move all alround the formation causing matchup problems is huge. Dickson is very fluid. He moves like a WR. Ron Jaworski raved about Dickson on ESPN during the Raven/Carolina game. I’ve heard Greg Cosell of NFL Films speak glowing about Dickson having huge upside. Dickson also remained healthy in college….a bonus. I think Dickson will ultimately be a better player than Gresham.
sorry, but if you haven’t seen a suddenness or explosiveness to gresham’s game, then you haven’t actually watched him this preseason. saying dickson will be better than gresham is foolish.

i’m not saying anything negative about dickson; i only know the hype about him coming out of the draft. but having watched jermaine gresham and the attributes he brings to the position, there’s very little chance dickson is actually better.

Ever heard of it? That’s what is used to see a player in a scheme and how he affects a defense. Don’t dismiss this log standing tool used by the league forever. I’m not the president of the Ron Jaworski fan club either.

Wonder who the last two guys cut will be.
If it’s Daniel Coats, I’m going to cry.
Josh, can I request a long article about how important Coats was to the team be written if he does get cut?
This just seems so stupid
Considering they were willing to sign him because he does have some skills, wouldn’t you think they’d want to see some return at some point? IR would have at least let you use the guy next year, when things weren’t so certain.
I just hope this colossal FUBAR situation doesn’t put Mikey in penny-pinching mode (at least, moreso than normal).
Yikes.
This is embarrassing for our FO.. But then again, aren’t they used to that feeling?

Obviously, the front office effed up big time
That said, props for not trying to sugar-coat it. They went out and got someone else (TO) and today cut the cord.
As some said earlier it sucks all around, but at least they are moving decisively to deal with their mistake.
Never liked this signing...
So let him leave with our money…rather him do that then be the disappointment I knew he would be. My best friend is a bucs fan and he ragged on me saying it was a terrible sign. I could only agree with him. Not sure why people anoint J. Shipley as the second coming…he has a lot to prove. I saw him play lots…I live in Texas. He could disappear quicker than a turkey in November in some games. And that was against college defenses. I wish this would motivate J. Simpson and get his head into the game. Got so much talent just wasting away. I would hope this also means Q. Cosby gets a spot on team. He will never be an elite receiver but he does the little things and plays hard. That being said…for some reason I am mad…I hope this isn’t an omen for our season….
+1
Think Cosby’s performance pushed the issue to keep him.

Bryant will pursue $1.55 million salary in injury grievance
Some info & Antonio Bryant release reax
In the wake of Antonio Bryant’s release, his agent tells Joe Reedy that they will pursue Bryant’s $1.55 million salary as an injury settlement.
James Walker points out all the red flags hoisted over Bryant since his signing. However, he writes that the Bengals were fortunate in several ways:
First, Cincinnati will not take a salary cap hit because it’s an uncapped year. An educated guess is the Bengals may have stuck with Bryant to see how he recovers had there been a stiff cap hit for the life of the contract.
Second, signing Terrell Owens and drafting Jordan Shipley made Bryant expendable. Both receivers have looked superior to what Bryant showed in Cincinnati with a bad knee.
Muckraker Mike thinks that Bryant could draw a lot of interest if he gets healthy. Mike’s list of potential Bryant suitors includes the Titans, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders, Chargers, Redskins, Bears, Vikings, Bucs, Cardinals, Browns, Rams and Seahawks.
CBS Sports gives the Bengals credit for moving decisively, but adds that the Bryant signing will still go down as one of the team’s worst personnel decisions.
So wait, he want’s more money? That’s just rude at this point.

Just going by what this site made him out to be when you signed him. At point, people here were actually trying to make an argument that Bryant is better than Boldin and that they would much rather have Bryant over Boldin. Does anyone here still think that?
if he was actually healthy, Yeah.
But he wasn’t healthy, so no b/c he can’t play at all.
Put the shoe on the other foot. If Boldin was hurt would he still be better than Bryant? No he wouldn’t be.
Bryant was a good WR and I always thought b/c he didn’t have a QB to throw to him that his talents were diminished. Everywhere he went he had a terrible QB throwing the ball. Except one year, with Garcia and you saw his numbers that year.
Well that was a stupid argument
but it’s a lot closer comparison to have healthy Bryant without losing draft picks compared to Boldin.
Boldin is the better player. But the Bengals couldn’t afford to give up picks this year (as it was they did nothing to cover their hole at Safety)

i’m willing to bet i could find just as many people on this site at that time who were against the signing and would rather have had t.o. (i know i was one of them); don’t take one side of things just to create your narrative.

It was worth it.
I was for the Bryant signing before it happened, mostly because I wanted the long-term deal. T.O. was not it, Bryant was.

you said earlier that you were making a statement about boldin being 29 and on the back end of his career; wouldn’t that same statement hold true for bryant? if they had made this deal with brandon marshall, i’d have been all for it, but antonio bryant had never done anything in his career to warrant #1 receiver money.

Mike Brown earns some respect as a GM.
I never miss an opportunity to bash ol’ Mikey, but the more I chew on this the more I start to think he might have done something right. For the past few months I have been pissed at him for signing Bryant in the first place but I gotta admit, getting TO on paper was huge. He made a horrible decision with Antonio and it sucks. At least he did not wallow in it. Very Un-Brown-like.
just encase there is a silver lining.
+1
They gave Bryant every chance to make the team – he just couldn’t. Right F.O. decision is to get it out of the way now and focus on moving forward.
What I don’t understand is all the upbeat talk of progress being made earlier in the week.
by IllinoisBengal on Aug 29, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions
That came from the agent and Bryant,
they knew something was coming up. Like being cut. I would assume the FO told AB that if he wasn’t getting better that they were not keeping him. So he came out and told everyone he was getting better, which seems to be another lie.
Sigh
Mike Brown is the ultimate two steps forward/two steps back owner. He does good things with the draft — or lets Marvin do nice things, and then… this, another sigh-inducing moment with personnel.
Maybe he has plans of keeping TO past this season. If not, this was dumb, dumb, dumb.
Another thing that occurred to me is, it’s almost like he’s mad at AB for being hurt.
Oh well.
So long, Antonio. We barely knew thee.
"For what I do, my size is not’’ important, Shipley said. "A lot of guys in the league are 5-11 ½ and 185 pounds. You’ve got to have something that sets you apart. For me, it’s catching every single ball.’’
you never know
the way they have been playing musical chairs with the roster the last few years, we might know him someday down the road.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm going to stick up for Mike Brown
I’m just glad he took a shot actually the last two years at getting us a good receiver. How many years have we complained that Mike Brown won’t pay for quality players? We didn’t pick the right ones in Coles and Bryant, but I’m glad he at least gave it a shot. That’s showed he actually cared about winning. You have to gamble on these players and sometimes you lose.
Coles/Bryant
Mike Brown: 0-2. Par for the course, wouldn’t you say?
The irony of your comment is that they didn’t take a shot. The Dolphins and Ravens took a shot by actually giving up something for receivers that were high in demand. The Bengals went Plan B (or C) and signed veteran receivers that had been cut by their previous teams. Gave them a ton of jack to boot. Money that could’ve been spent elsewhere on a team that finished last season far from perfect.
Here’s a novel concept: If a legit number #2 isn’t available, spend it elsewhere or swallow it. I’m completely embarrassed how little we actually got out of the 13-14 million handed to these jokers. I appreciate your optimism, but there is no silver lining in this case. Hardly bold. Very stupid.
Most of the time, Mike Brown doesn't spend money
and when he does spend it it’s like trying to buy more healthfood at McDonalds.
There’s a reason he has the worst record of any “general manager” in any sport anywhere. Mike Brown is a proven jackass with 19 years of evidence. The only hope we have is that Marvin Lewis can wrestle more control from the hands of the jackass and his family… but I have a feeling the jackass would just let him walk. [And no I don’t think Lewis is any kind of genius, but compared to Mike Brown almost anyone is Einstein of Football]

Bryant
I was kicked off of cincinnatibengals.com fan posts over an arguement that signing this guy over T.O. was a mistake. T.O. has had more thousand yard seasons than this guy will ever have. Mike Brown’s “yes men” cincinnatibengals.com moderators proceeded to attack me and call me a dumba*s. While defending myself I was kicked off the website permanently. It was O.K. for them to attack me but I couldn’t say anything back to them to defend myself.
How smart you all look now…
How did that Bryant signing work out? Now all of those same people that were saying Bryant was so much better than T.O. and bad mouthing T.O. now are singing his praises.
Cincinnatibengals.com was even showing a fan post yesterday to the effect that they couldn’t wait to see Bryant on the field. The whole site is fake company propaganda.
That is why I like this fan forum so much. You can say what you feel without worying about being sensored.
For the most part you can say what you feel.
This site is great and as long as you say what you feel in a descent manner, there’s no problem. We welcome healthy discussion, just as long as you don’t take it to extremes.
Everyone thinks differently and if they thought alike, then it would be boring.
