Jermaine Gresham Officially Signs; Bengals Release Defensive End Rahim Alem
Once Jermaine Gresham signs his five-year contract on Tuesday, the Bengals' roster will again climb to 81, which is, you know, illegal in the heavens of the football gods.
Well, Gresham officially signed Tuesday afternoon.
To make room, the Bengals cut defensive end Rahim Alem.
I know what you're thinking. Why not Daniel Coats? The truth with Coats is that even though his hands were built by bricks, he brings some usefulness as a fullback and perhaps even on special teams.
Alem, who recorded 14 quarterback sacks during his four-year LSU career which included first-team All-SEC honors in 2008, was signed as a college free agent following the 2010 NFL Draft.

Rahim Alem cut really!
Really!! I’m truely not happy about the release of Rahim! I’m a huge Bengals fan but as well as a LSU fan. Wierd right a cincy fan that is a lsu, let me explain my dad is a huge UK fan so I grew up watching the SEC. So I feel in love with watching the spread passing game with Rohan Davies and Kevin Faulk! Plus I sure to be rebelous from my father! Anywho this guy has a motor unlike anyone I’ve ever seen and you cant tell me that it is more important to keep a guy like Coats! Really his fullback skills, we can go get a guy off the street that can block and catch better than this guy! I was so waiting for Sunday when I could watch Rahim sack the hell out of the Cowgirls!!!!!!!!
Gay.
Dan “shat on the” Coats should have been cut. I’d make a better TE than him. If you don’t get my “shat on the Coats” reference, it’s from a Dane Cook bit, BTW.
Yeah
You are probably right.

Not that I like Coats staying on
but MB and the coaching staff won’t give him the boot until their hand is forced by the roster deadline.
While all of us have the innumerable drops in our minds, I’m quite certain that the picture of Coats that Marvin Lewis has in his is Benson’s 47 yard TD run in the playoff game. On that play, Coats and Caldwell opened a hole in the Jets’ defence so gigantic that even Andre Smith could have taken it to the house.
We are stacked at DE
He had no chance. It’s probably better for him as cutting him early gives him a good chance at getting with another team.
Coats
won’t go from first string to the first cut. He didn’t give up a QB sack last year.
And although he had 7 dropped passes, T.O. had 10 dropped.
Of course T.O. was targeted a lot more that Coats though. :)
Injury
There’s also the fact that the other TE (Gresham, Kelly, Coffman) are all coming off of injuries that required corrective surgery. The team would be foolish to cut someone capable of filling in if the injury bug plagued that position the way it did last year. I’d be much happier if they’d have kept J.P. Foschi though, especially considering he was the 4th best receiver on the team last year by total yardage and he caught 2 touchdowns (which is 2 more than Coats caught, but about 5 less than Coats dropped in the end zone).
Stacked at DE really!
Heres the list of our TE Reggie Kelly, Daniel Coats, Chase Coffman/Darius Hill/Clark Harris/Jermaine Gresham. If they wanted to keep him because of other injuries then cut Darius or Clark! And I dont wanna see him on another team I wanted to see him on Sunday in a Bengals uniform. Its sweet seeing a player you have watched for 4 years in college go to your pro team, like when the Bengals got Benny Brazil and Andrew Witworth!!
