Open Thread: Preseason Game #5 Determines Roster. How Will The Chips Fall?

Two things are going to happen tonight. A cold front will pass through Cincinnati to finally knock off this ridiculous 90 degree obsession mother earth has in store for us. Seriously, the sun baking water into vapor is like a torture of tyrants. Also tonight, the Bengals will play their final preseason game of the year. The final audition. Who are the bubble players to make this team of Merry Men? Any surprise cuts? What about veteran cuts? All of that will be known after Thursday night's game, which for some, will either give them safe passage onto the team's roster.

So this is your Thursday open thread and the topic is two-fold. What positions do you think are still up in the air and which bubble players do you feel makes the team?

I think Quan Cosby makes the team, taking Caldwells place. And I hope they keep Simpson.

I think with Bryant gone, Cosby is a lock. The thing about Cosby is that you just continually see him. Whether Pacman is making a return, or Jerome Simpson makes a tackle on a return, # 12 is there. The there is the fact that he made the most ridiculous catch in the preseason.

Ironic you’d make that point about Cosby, yet put him beneath Caldwell who we’ve barely seen all preseason. Doesn’t bode well for him. If they were the least bit excited about his play last year, wouldn’t have signed 4 or 5 receivers and drafted 2 more. Can’t return kicks. Can’t get separation out of the slot. He’s gone.

playing time

I now think cosby is a lock as well. I also think that dez B is going to be practice squad. I wonder how much playing time each reciever will get. If the coaches have QC on the team already, maybe he only gets the first half after the starters. I expect to see simpson out there for the entire second half. as well for jones. If inconsistancy is the problem for these guys then give them a half and see who can do something with it. I think simpson and jones will then get comfortable and show their true colors. I am a simpson supporter and thinks he can pull it out if he does infact play good ST.

Bubble Boys

Cosby. He’s in.

Simpson. I’d be ok either way, but I don’t think he’ll be there unless he has a GREAT preseason game tonight.

Matt Jones. Same thing as Simpson. Which one will prevail?

Muckleroy. IN.

Dan the Tweet Coats. Wow. He’s Bubble Boy with Bacon. I’ve been surprised to see him make some catches, and we know he can block. With the current light fullback load, if he makes some good plays tonight, he may be on the team. Again. Gresham? I thought you said you liked greased hands. Oppsies.

New FB on Campus?

Saw where Chris Pressley is 2nd string FB in Tampa. If he gets cut…..should we take a shot and pick him up? I say hell YES. Should not have let him go last year,

Chris Pressley

Did you see his production at Tampa?

by IllinoisBengal on Sep 2, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He probably did. (Haven’t watched to know for sure.) But there’s a reason that team is a disfunctional mess. I’m not sure it’s his fault.

Question

Does anybody know how I can watch the final preseason game tonight? NFL network isn’t showing it in Chicago.

Road trip or

A road trip to northern Indiana possibly or find a big sports bar carrying Colts games.

by sofakingood on Sep 2, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

My guesses

Cosby and Simpson make it. M. Jones, Purify and Briscoe get cut. Briscoe to PS
Nugent wins kicker spot. Raynor cut. Though they might look at other recently cut K too.
Trent and Da. Jones make cut.
Herbert makes cut.
Muckleroy makes cut. Skuta to PS
Rucker gets cut.
Coats makes cut.
Just Turn Over and Palmer II make the cut.
Cedric Peerman makes the cut.

Old guys are always right.

I’ll let you know next Monday. I bet I hit it right on the head.

They need to let JP play most of tonight...

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again… JT O’Suckfest is as good as he is going to get and he still sucks. JP can improve if they give him the reps. They need to give him more than a quarter or less. JT will get this team nowhere. While most likely neither would JP, at least he has some potential.

Get Kitna

Dallas will probably cut Kitna in favor of youth. Would be great to reunite him with Big Palmer.

by sofakingood on Sep 2, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with both. Keep trying to develop JP until/unless a better option comes along. Get rid of Just Terrible Overall. And if Kitna becomes available, grab him.

by FriarBob on Sep 2, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, if we could get Kitna that would be KILLER

Get rid of JTO. Kitna would LOVE to get back and play for the Bengals, at least I get that sense.

Packers OT Giacomini

PFT is claiming that several teams want to trade for him. Given Collins’ injury situation and Roland’s ongoing issues, I wonder if we’re in the mix.

Merry Men?

Got a mental picture of Chad in Robin Hood: Men in Tights with Carson as Robin Hood.

And a Friar

“Jelly Moobs” for Friar Tuck?

Dennis Roland

as Little John?

Everytime I watch a game, I see Roland towering over the rest of the players

by Oregonbengalsfan on Sep 2, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be a good fit.

by FriarBob on Sep 2, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey! My online persona re(pre)sents that statement.

by FriarBob on Sep 2, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey Friar Bob

I like to think your persona is spritual and enlightening. Friar Jelly Moobs is all about grazing at the buffet line, much like Friar Tuck’s penchant for mass consumtion.

by sofakingood on Sep 2, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Who is Chad tho? Will Scarlet? Or is he the Arab guy?

by FriarBob on Sep 2, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

who needs a good kicker

We just go for it every time on 4th down with Chad, TO, Shipley/Kelly, Ghisham, and Benson/Scott/Leonard. Stop that.

For extra points we use Chad.

Have someone kick it out of bounds every kickoff and have the defense stop them from the 35.

I’m serious. No, not really.
