The 2010 Cincy Jungle 53-Man Roster Prediction
Last year, the Cincy Jungle writing staff composed a predicted 53-man roster. When it was all said in done, we got seven wrong. Not bad, but we prefer to be more awesome. Because there's nothing more awesome than being awesome.
With Quan Cosby announcing that he made the team through Twitter, it's time that we do two things before the team's final cuts. First, let's reexamine our "locks" posting. At the time of that posting, we predicted that 46 players were locks to make the roster. And yes, we already had Cosby as a lock anyway, so this proves nothing but confirming our awesome psychic powers. Most of the opinions remain the same, but let's add a few players in our "locks" since last nights 30-28 win over the Indianapolis Colts, putting the finishing touches our prediction for the team's 53-man roster.
#47 - Daniel Coats (fourth tight end, second de facto fullback)
#48 - Cedric Peerman (fourth running back)
I know I've waffled on the choice on Roddrick Muckelroy; it's not an easy thing to just throw names out there. However, Muckelroy had a strong showing in the final two preseason games, recording nine tackles (all of them solo) and a quarterback sack. Not to mention, on one fourth quarter play, the Colts quarterback fumbled the snap. Upon picking the football back up, Muckelroy grabbed the quarterback and nearly folded him in half from the waist.
#49 - Roddrick Muckelroy (possibly third-string middle linebacker)
We believed J.T. O'Sullivan is a lock, mostly because he's been the preferred backup quarterback all preseason. If the Bengals go with three quarterbacks, then obviously Jordan Palmer would be in.
#50 - Jordan Palmer (third-string quarterback)
Mike Nugent nailed 50-yard field goals in back-to-back games. Neither kicker had an advantage on the kickoff game (though I believe that's a minor contribution to the decision -- making field goals, especially long field goals, is kind of important).
#51 - Mike Nugent (place kicker)
Now we're entering the area where locks are far less certainties. For example, I'm not sure if the team will take six or seven linebackers. However, I believe that Dan Skuta has the versatility that Marvin tends to like. This guy plays offense (fullback), defense (linebacker) and special teams.
#52 - Dan Skuta (backup linebacker)
Finally, the moment of truth. Which wide receiver will the Bengals take to complete their roster? Do I go with Jerome Simpson, the more productive receiver during the preseason? Or do I go with Dezmon Briscoe, the receiver that many believe in their gut is the better of the two? The truth is, we're going to pick the receiver, based on Cincinnati's actions, throughout the preseason. We're not going with our favorites, nor our guts. I believe Cincinnati will try to sneak Briscoe through waivers and keep Simpson on the 53-man roster.
#53 - Jerome Simpson (sixth wide receiver).
Now, what you've all been waiting for. The 2010 Cincy Jungle predicted 53-man roster. Keep in mind. This may not be the team's opening roster when they kickoff the season against the New England Patriots. We still fully expect them to check out the waiver wire, maybe picking up a quarterback or a safety, or anyone else they feel will help the team.
Offense (26 players)
QUARTERBACK (3): Carson Palmer, J.T. O'Sullivan, Jordan Palmer
RUNNING BACK (4): Cedric Benson, Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard, Cedric Peerman

2 problems.....
It’s really good except I see 2 problems with it.
1. Jerome Simpson is not going to make it. It’s just that simple. Jerome Simpson has been given chance after chance to make this team and his chances are up. It is Dezmond Briscoe’s turn to make this team.
2. I like Kyries Herbert but I see him getting beat out by Rico Murray. In this offseason, Rico Murray has definitely made a case why he should be with the Bengals organization. Plus he can play Safety and Corner. Not to mention he can also play on the ST’s.
Not so sure...
1. Briscoe, yep, I think they have to keep him some way. Simpson’s not the new Chad, let’s just move on.
2. Hebert’s a lock for special teams, surely. Not sure Rico did enough (was called for a couple of penalties in Indy), but practice squad could be likely.
I think the call comes down to Briscoe or Stephens. If they both stick, Jordan must be on the bubble. Fair dues to Coats. Nobody beat him out despite an awful 2009.
Not sure about Herbert....
I agree with you on Simpson. We should just move on and start fresh with Briscoe.
However, I don’t necessary think that Herbert is a lock on Special Teams. I think they will part ways with Herbert and will either stick with Marvin White/Rico Murray or maybe get lucky and get someone off of the waiver wire.
Also, I think Jordan Palmer is safe no matter if they keep 3 quarterbacks or go with 2. J.P. showed last night that he is a better backup QB than J.T. O’Sullivan. However, it would be nice if we could get Patrick Ramsey.

Wouldn't be surprised if Coats finally gets cut
As much as he is a blocker, STs player, and can play additional FB, Reggie Kelly does 2/3 on his own as well, why take two unless Kelly gets hurt? If he does, just bring Coats back because who the hell else is gonna sign this guy?
If that’s the case, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Murray or Miles make the team as an additional safety.
You could say the same about ....
Jordan Palmer. Odds are he will clear waivers. If injuries occur how long would it take to re- sign him ???
Maybe not....
I don’t think Jordan Palmer will be released. I think he has proved enough to the coaching staff that he could be the best option to be the second string QB behind his bigger brother Carson Palmer.

Wouldn’t be surprised either way. I mean, he just sucked at catching the ball last year. But if he truly was hurt, then they shouldn’t have been stupid enough to try to throw to him in the first place (or if he hid it, shame on him for hurting the team that way).
Near the end of the season, I think Carson was only throwing to Chad, which led to the bad stretch at the end of the season.
I live near St. Louis
The Rams are starved at WR, especially after their #1, Donnie Avery, was lost for the year. Donnie Avery for heavens sake. Few teams are in worse shape.
They certainly know the Big 12 around here and might have in interest in Briscoe if he is waived.
But the call-in talk on the radio has been whether they can really trust Mardy Gilyard or do they get to pick up a veteran like Laveranues Coles.
BTW - St. Louis fans
also think the Reds are a bunch of thugs looking for a fight.

Yeah, possibly
I think Minnesota is a more likely destination, though.

It's the money.
The new owner may be a little more willing, he can afford it, but the Rams have sunk a lot of big $$ in high draft choices the past few years.
by IllinoisBengal on Sep 3, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Possibly not....
I don’t think the rams will go after T.J. Houshmandzadeh. They have had a need for a WR for some time now but haven’t made a move to get a veteran like Housh out there. I mean c’mon….they passed up on Terrell Owens and now they lost they’re #1 WR Donnie Avery. I think they will stick with the younger guys. As for where T.J. Housh will land, Idk. It’s a toss up right now. Vikings, Raiders, Redskins, and Browns would be a great landing spot for T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

That would be a dream trade....
I like Caldwell but I would take that trade. Just imagine….Cedric Benson and Steven Jackson in the backfield for the Cincinnati Bengals. It would be awesome. That would definitely be the ultimate running back duo ever.
But that is just a dream. It would never happen because Rams would never get rid of their star running back no matter how desperate they are for a WR.

Thanks, was that comment necessary?
I’m glad you don’t have an avatar picture so people don’t have to visualize that…
They'll go after Matt Jones first
and that’s why I think Briscoe’s safe on waivers. There’s a more proven receiver with a lot of the same attributes.

My take
Cut: Coats and Simpson. Maybe JTO Speedwagon as well.
Keep: Skuta/Hodge and Briscoe
Look for a safety and FB on the waiver wire.
Why is this site so down on Roddrick Muckelroy? You’ve called him a “bubble player” and, before last night, said he’d be cut. I don’t get it. I think he’s a valuable backup player that they’re not even thinking about cutting.
If they can find a way to get both Simpson AND Briscoe on the 53 (meaning they keep 7 WRs), then do it. Otherwise, Briscoe should make it over JS.
+1 on Simpson
After three years in the NFL you are what you. Simpson flashed athleticism but not NFL game awareness.
But the coaches have talked him up and he enters games earlier than either Cosby or Briscoe.

The kid is only 24
I say keep him around. The kid has the skills to play.

Briscoe is only 21
And is a more polished route-runner, has better field awareness, has better hands and had a highly productive career at a Big 12 school—not Coastal Carolina. Not to sound like a broken record, but with Briscoe you’ll still have to work with him, but it’ll take less work and you’ll see better results quicker than you did with Simpson.
by Anthony Cosenza on Sep 3, 2010 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd say Simpson has better hands IMO
Briscoe is the better route runner no doubt
by Throw the ball on Sep 3, 2010 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions
All these Briscoe attributes you keep spouting are based off what?
His career at Kansas? I don’t even think Briscoe was a factor until he caught that 50 yd TD pass. Dude has been an irrelevant thought. If were going off college stats then Simpson had a pretty damn good resume from college as well.
Neither will be relevant this year.
Wherever Simpson or Briscoe end up, they’re not seeing the field this year unless there are injuries.
by IllinoisBengal on Sep 3, 2010 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions
And your basis...?
You’ve been a Simpson blow-hard all day, dude. What exactly has Simpson done in THREE YEARS? NOTHING. He’ll continue to do nothing. Simpson’s “pretty damn good college resume” was from Coastal Carolina. COASTAL FREAKING CAROLINA. Who’d they play? ITT Tech? Come on. They never should have drafted the kid in the second round in the first place. We all know that DeSean Jackson should have been the pick. If Simpson is such “the athletic freak” and so “promising”, why in three years has he had ONE catch and is fighting for the #6 WR spot? He SHOULD be way farther ahead than where he is.
I’m not saying that Briscoe is going to come in and start in 2010. I still think he’s a year away from contributing heavily. But I think he’s a future starter at WR in the NFL. I used to think the same about Simpson, but it seems that all the coaching in the world won’t get this kid NFL ready. I wish he’d be a success story for the Bengals, but he just won’t. I’m not rooting against the kid, I’m just calling it like I see it—it’s fine if you don’t agree. But it’s time to move on.

College days
And so many are high on Coffman simply because of what he did in college. Yet it’s a criticism with Briscoe and nothing to hang his hat on. What are people going off of with Coffman? College. The 6 WRs should be Chad.. TO.. Shipley.. Cosby.. Simpson.. Briscoe
by justRick on Sep 3, 2010 10:03 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Coffman is showing why he was drafted
Yes, he’s getting outshone by Gresham, but he seems to have worked hard at becomming a better blocker and more versitle TE. Plus he has very reliable hands.
Simpson is still the big question mark for cut day to me, as I can see the upside of Dez. The coaches see both of them every day so it’s unfair for us to judge by the table scraps of film we get to even watch.
2010 - The Year of the Tiger.
It's been said...
But needs to be said again. There is NO WAY Briscoe makes it through waivers. Too many teams in this league are starved at Wide Receiver. You can’t give away a talent like his.
So here’s what I say: Keep Cosby (since it’s been announced by him), Keep Simpson. Keep Briscoe. Drop Caldwell. Can someone explain to me what Caldwell brings to this team when you consider that A) the top 3 receivers are Ocho, T.O., and Shipley, and B) Other than being the slot guy (a position owned by Shipley), what does Caldwell bring that SImpson or Briscoe can not?
Try and trade Caldwell for whatever you can get to the above-stated-Wide-Receiver-starved teams. Can we get a 5th for him, or in greatest of fantasies, a 4th? (Keep in mind that player-for-player trades are very rare in the NFL).
Why Trade Caldwell????
Doesn’t anyone remember from last year that Andre Caldwell was The Cardiac Cat Killer. So why is that after not having a good performance in the preseason that everyone wants to get rid of him? Plus Caldwell has wanted to play in almost all of the games but the coaches wanted him to sit out. So don’t blame the average preseason on Andre Caldwell
I mean c’mon. What do you guys see in Jerome Simpson? I’ve seen more out of Andre Caldwell than I have out of Jerome Simpson. Simpson was given his chances and he proved that he either A) Isn’t ready for the NFL or B) Isn’t right for the Bengals organization.
So in my opinion keep Caldwell, Cosby, and Briscoe. I think Briscoe will be the better receiver than Jerome Simpson. Briscoe will be like the next Chris Henry.
by Justin Noland on Sep 3, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Caldwell did well as the 4th reciever. While he made those catches in important games, he didn’t show up later when he was needed even more. The Bengals brought in Bryant, TO and SHipley to compete with him, and 2 have outshined him. Simpson hasn’t performed yet, but TJ was on the brink of being cut in 2004 and then became a probowler. Austin Miles and SIdney Rice did similarly to Simpson in their first 2 years, and Simpson could be a similar player.
I like Caldwell but I like 5 other recievers better, and I think Briscoe deserves time. I think that leaves Caldwell as odd man out.
Well Yeah.....
But you also have to remember….almost the whole team didn’t show up later in the year. Oh yeah not to mention he was dealing with some ankle and knee injuries. So I could understand the hard time he would have in the later season of 2009.
Also I like how you referenced T.J. Austin Miles and Sidney Rice to Jerome Simpson. While that is true, I just don’t see how Jerome deserves a 3rd chance when they’re are other players that have gone out they’re and proved that they deserve to be on this team.
by Justin Noland on Sep 3, 2010 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions
?
What has Briscoe done to prove he deserves to be here over Simpson? I’m not getting the love for him. I’m no huge Simpson fan, but to me he and Briscoe are essentially in the same situation— they showed potential in college but haven’t done anything on an NFL field.
College film reels are nice, but they don’t necessarily indicate pro success. Given the team’s track record picking draft picks, I really don’t get why people think Briscoe will be absolutely better than Simpson. Both players are talented guys with potential and upside, but in reality both are total question marks until they get a reception in a real life NFL game. At this point Simpson has shown more than Briscoe in the pre-season, so if anything that tips the scale in his favor.
Simpson
One thing I think you guys are getting too caught up on right now is Simpson’s history. What happened in 2008 and 2009 means nothing in 2010. If the Bengals think that Simpson helps them this year, he’s in. If they don’t, Briscoe is in (and vice versa, or however you want to phrase it). Just depends on who can help us this year.
But really, for us, it’s a toss up. We don’t know their thought process. This is fun though. :)

True but.....
That is true. The Past is the past and this is the present. But where have I heard that the Bengals thought that Simpson could help and kept him and then guess what happened in the second game. Oh yeah The Bengals and Simpson the past 2 years. We kept Simpson and he ended up getting injured. I’m tired of the Bengals giving this guy a chance. They need to do what they did with Bryant. They released Bryant, admitted their mistake and moved on. That’s what they need to do with Simpson.

Preseason was his 3rd chance...
And he proved that he has worth. I just think that Caldwell might be the odd man out. Those catches could have been made by another receiver, ie. Cosby, who has shown that he is more valuable than Caldwell on ST and as a receiver. Hell I say keep Simpson, Briscoe, and Caldwell and cut JT. But I don’t see that happening.

Cosby vs Simpson vs Briscoe
Who has the most unrealized potential? Simpson could take over the role Chris Henry had last year. Briscoe hasn’t done much because he hasn’t been given opportunities, but he did perform in college. Cosby’s 5’9" vs Briscoe’s 6’2". You can’t teach height. The Bengals have other punt returners. I don’t see Cosby ever becoming an all-pro wideout. Briscoe? Maybe. Keep Briscoe & Simpson.
I could care less if cosby ever made a catch
he is a special teams star; not just returning but blocking and tackling.
