NFL Roster Cuts: Bengals Release Kyries Hebert

CINCINNATI - AUGUST 20: Kyries Hebert #34 of the Cincinnati Bengals is tackled by Riley Cooper #14 of the Philadelphia Eagles after Hebert intercepted a pass during the NFL preseason game at Paul Brown Stadium on August 20 2010 in Cincinnati Ohio. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Kyries Hebert is one of the team's more productive special teams players, even earning from his peers the role of Special Teams Captain after recording a team-high 23 special teams tackles in 2008. Tied for second on the team with 12 special teams tackles, Hebert was still considered the team's special teams ace.

He filled in for the injured Roy Williams and Chinedum Ndukwe at safety during the preseason, recording an interception against the Eagles and 12 total tackles in the final two preseason games.

Hebert announced through Twitter that he has been cut from the Bengals, according to Joe Reedy.

Hebert is the first surprise cut, based on our 2010 53-man roster projection.

Along with Hebert, Dezmon Briscoe, Matt Jones and Dave Rayner have been cut. Four down, 18 to go.

I can't stand having players

that can ONLY be special teamers. We need a 4th safety who can actually play safety a la Rico Murray or Marvin White. I actually think they’ll keep White as the 4th safety.

Really

You should have bet some money on this. I bet you would have taken a lot of very educated Bengals fans cash.

I don't like this cut

I like his ST and we are always waiting to see when Roy Williams will come up gimpy. Enless the Bengals have picked up a better saftey off of someones eles cut list.

hoping this cut is tempory

and the bengals resign him once the dust settles.

I liked Hebert

Special teams ace, im starting to get worried about our special teams coverage this year. If Skuta end up getting axed as well we lose our two best ST players. Hopefully young guys like Muckleroy and Ghee can step up.

Agreed

I can’t help but read this as having high hopes in Ghee and others.

or Jeromy Miles

I like that kid, really hoping he makes it.

I think Miles goes to PS

I think the PS will be:

Miles
Sears
Briscoe
Hudson
Hill
Rodgers
Tronzo

Knew this cut was coming

If they only keep 4 safties because of the 6 corners all 4 safties have to be able to play in the base defense. Hebert can’t. He’s strictly a special teamer. Has never played a down of base D in regular season since he’s been here.

Ko Simpson

got cut by the Lions. Would he be worth taking a look at ???

by redberkey on Sep 4, 2010 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

If they are watching the waiver wire safety is the most likely position.

by jim0ijk on Sep 4, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah he could be something worth looking at

not sure he’s a starter. definitely depth.

We all got so distracted by the same question about Quan Cosby...

that we forgot to look at Hebert. Cosby contributed more outside of special teams last year than Hebert did, and certainly would again this year. Moreover, we really need someone besides Crocker who can cover in the back (Miles?).

The Hebert cut likely means that Skuta makes it to the 53.

by Mr. X on Sep 4, 2010 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

My thoughts exactly.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Kyries make three blocks covering 80 yards on a return like we saw out of Quan last year. And the Bengals’ staff have been high on Skuta all offseason.

by Craig Conrad on Sep 4, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't think Skuta makes it either

They’ll probably go light at linebacker with just 6 right now because of the running back situation. They can most likely get Skuta and Rey to the PS. Then activate one of them when needed.

by NY Bengal M on Sep 4, 2010 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

Except that they can use SKuta when a FB is needed, helping both the O, D and Teams. I think fui gets IR.

by jim0ijk on Sep 4, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree on Fui but they have Coates to play FB if needed

I think he actually caught everything thrown his way in preseason but should be able to do a good job blocking out of the backfield and on the line.
