NFL Roster Cuts: Bengals Release Safety Marvin White

On August 22, the Cincinnati Bengals signed safety Marvin White for a second tour of duty, mostly in response to Gibril Wilson going on Injured Reserve. Though one could argue that safety is somewhat of a wreck with injuries -- mostly minor, we hope -- so the team really wanted to fill the roster with some bodies during preseason.

White played two games with the Bengals in the preseason, even starting against the Buffalo Bills. In both games White recorded seven tackles and two passes defensed.

On September 4, White is back on free agency. According to Joe Reedy, the Bengals released White, making it two safeties cut so far with Hebert being the other. That leaves Chris Crocker, Roy Williams, Rico Murray and Chinedum Ndukwe as the team's remaining safeties on the roster.

Our cut list thus far is: Dezmon Briscoe, Matt Jones, Kyries Hebert, Dave Rayner, Isaac Sowells and now Marvin White. Six reported cuts, 16 more reported cuts to go.

would appear we’re looking at the waiver wires for a safety.

bears cut Safety Al Afalava

“Afalava started 13 games last season and accumulated 53 tackles, two sacks, seven pass deflections, and a forced fumble as a rookie. "

doesn’t sound like a bad guy to take a chance on for depth. he’s young also.

WR note from Hobson

on the official site’s blog:

“Wide receiver Maurice Purify, who missed the last four preseason games with knee tendinitis, is expected to be put on some kind of injury list.”

They need to be looking at waivers

I dont believe that they will go into the season with Rico Murry as the 4th saftey.

I wouldnt be opposed to it

Ive never really seen him play enough to have to much of an opinion on him, but his stats as a rookie are alright.

saw it

I went and youtubed him after you mentioned him. Another youtube thing had his pro day, ran a 4.47 40 and looked decent. Wish they had some more game highlights of him. I would be happy if they picked him up, he seems to atleast have some potential, and has showed hes decent at the NFL level.

most exciting cut so far at safety

bears didn’t fall out of love with him. he got caught in a numbers crunch. like us with wrs. he played 13 games for this last season and couldnt be sent to the practice squad. chicago fans are hoping he gets resigned.

i’m just hoping we move on him.

from what ive seen

I would be happy to have him on our team, and it looks like he would be a productive player for us.

looking at Windy City Gridiron

People over there were not surprised by the cut of him, and were saying he was a liability in coverage. Didnt really see anyone arguing for keeping him like you have here when players in tough roster competitions are cut. Dont know how much that actually says about him as a player, but just wanted to see Bears fans perspective on him being released.

Here’s every comment on Afalava from the site you mentioned on a thread about the bears cuts:

“And Afalava will be a startingSS for someone in this league for years to come.”

“Cuts to the roster like Afalava really let you know how sorry our talent evaluating really is.”

“I don’t have a problem with Afalava getting cut, it just makes me wonder about how we went into last season with this guy as our starting SS for 13 games”

" Afalava was a good option last season, but fell off late in the season, and hasn’t looked the same since the shoulder injury. Cutting him was a good choice. We improved the position with Wright and Harris"

“Afalava did not look as good at the end of the season las year than he did at the beginning, and looked even worse in pre-season this year against worse competion”

" I don’t like a lot of these cuts so far. Shaw, Beekman, and Afalava"

Sites i read that had people wanting him back were the papers around chicago.

more

I think its a good cut . Lava …… ……. was a liability in coverage and just looked like he didn’t want any part of a competition for his position . Also his tackling was just bad and he showed zero improvment from last year to this year , so good cut in my opinion

I for one am shocked how bad Alfalava looked this preseason At the end of last year I thought he would be ok with another year or two under his belt. WTF happened to this guy in the offseason? Crack rock will rot the brain my friend, say no to drugs Al. Good luck wherever you land.

Your’e shocked! I am dumbfounded, how in the world does a player digress that much in one year? Not saying he was the second coming of Ronnie Lot last year, but with another year in the system etc etc, how in the world did he fall off like that? That’s a mystery to me.

These are the ones that had me worried. We dont need another saftey crappy in coverage, and maybe he dosent take football serious.

Morgan Trent could get called upon

Call it what you want, safety, 4th corner. But Trent seems to cover inside receivers very well in either man or zone situations. He gets his hads on alot of balls. He has the size and skills to become a good safety if converted.

or Ghee

I know their are a lot of people on this board who have pulled for him at Saftey since the draft.

by JCompton41 on Sep 4, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Possibly

But we’ve already seen Trent perform some of the duties a safety would be asked to do and he’s done well. Now with Jones as the 3rd corner it frees up Trent. Hopefully Ghee can use this year to focus on kick and punt coverage and of course improving his corner skills.
