NFL Roster Cuts: Bengals Release Linebacker Vincent Rey
Even though the Bengals released Abdul Hodge Saturday afternoon, it didn't clarify the position much. It's a numbers game, I tell you. A numbers game. With how many linebackers the Bengals plan to carry, that position will be battled between Roddrick Muckelroy, Vincent Rey and Dan Skuta.
Well, you can cross Rey off the list. Reedy writes that Rey was released and he's definitely headed to the practice squad once he clears waivers.
Rey (not Maualuga) recorded 18 preseason tackles, tying with Kyries Hebert with second most tackles on the team. If this team didn't have the impressive collection of linebackers they have, Rey would have easily made the roster. But it's hard to jump past guys like Dhani Jones, Keith Rivers, (not Vincent) Rey Maualuga, Brandon Johnson and Michael Johnson. With Muckelroy being a fourth round pick and Skuta able enough to contribute in all three phases of the game, Rey was simply an odd man out.
If the Bengals elect to keep seven linebackers, then the team's linebackers are set for the year.
Our cut list thus far is: Dezmon Briscoe, Matt Jones, Kyries Hebert, Dave Rayner, Isaac Sowells, Marvin White, Maurice Purify, Clinton McDonald, Abdul Hodge, Otis Hudson and Rey.
We're halfway there guys -- 11 down, 11 to go.

sucks, I like rey BUT
its very cool that we finally have enough talent that some really good players aren’t gonna make it…I hope we keept 7 though
It would seem likely
If they go with six, I’m not sure who they keep. You can make an argument for both; but the main argument would be who contributes for the team right now? Then you’d think they’d go with Skuta.

and stuka might slide into one of the special teams slots we’ve cleared.

I agree but
I remember a few years ago when we were wrecked at LB and had guys playing out of position and that was rough!
Yea
I think you’re referring to 2007. That was just different. I mean, we just weren’t talented at all at the position. But the injuries we suffered are well noted. I think we lost Caleb Miller, Lamar Marshall were out after early season injuries. After that, we had Anthon Schlegel starting at MLB until they signed Dhani. I think that, and his tackling machine mentality, is why we love Dhani so much.

Might have been 07
I know we had to shuffle Geathers back to LB and he didn’t do too badly there. But you are certainly correct, our starters were average at best and depth was a joke. If our defense can stay healthy and the younger LB’s Keith, Rey and MJ continue to progress we could be brutal.
RE:
Geathers against the Chiefs had to cover Tony Gonzalez. I mean, talk about unfair. Hey, Robert. Play linebacker. You’re covering a Hall of Fame tight end. Annnnnnnnnd go. Lol.

he's going to the practice squad
any long term injury at starting LB for the bengals and VRey will be back on the field.

yup
Ravens waived, amongst others, QB Troy Smith, RB Curtis Steele, T Devin Tyler and WR Demetrius Williams.
Wow!
I have been saying that for months. Hope they are smart enough to bring him in…but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Mike Brown is a f-cking clueless moron who blows draft picks. They got ZERO for a third round pick.

Well if you are looking for someone who is perfect .....
why not try Josh McDaniels. He traded a #1 this year to secure a #2 in last year’s draft so he could take DB Alfonso Smith. He got cut today. The Bills cut Hardy. He was taken in round 2 ahead of Simpson and DJackson. The Seahawks traded their #1 from two years ago DL Jackson. The 49ers traded their first round pick of two years ago Balmer. The Dolphins draft White in round 2 last year, guess what happen to him today ? I could go on but won’t. But I will say this. If Coffman had been not been taken by the Bengals but went as the next pick, he would have been a fouth round pick.
Well said.
Gresham is the starter. Coffman wasn’t going to be the #2. So what’s the point of keeping him? Waste of a spot. Maybe if they don’t draft Gresham, Coffman sticks. But Gresham is so much more talented so what would you expect? Keep a guy that will never play as the 3rd TE b/c you drafted him in the 3rd round last year? That sounds intelligent.
nah i don't blame brown for this one
coffman couldn’t beat coats out as the team’s 3rd TE. who’s fault is that. ton of other teams would have drafted coffman right after us.
someone will take a flyer on coffman. he’s still young enough, right coach and environment, it could work out for him. as bad as we needed coffman last year, and he couldn’t break into the lineup, at all. it was a huge red flag.
just wasn’t going to work out for coffman in cincy.
