NFL Roster Cuts: Bengals Release Chase Coffman and Injured/Waived Fui Vakapuna
To me, when the Bengals released Kyries Hebert, it was a surprise. But now, that's not the biggest surprise of the day. According to Joe Reedy, the Bengals released tight end Chase Coffman on Saturday. With Jermaine Gresham, Reggie Kelly and Daniel Coats, Coffman seemed like the odd man out. However, it doesn't limit the surprise, considering that Coffman spent his rookie year injured and showed vast improvements with physical play in training camp and during the preseason.
We had Coffman as a lock in our roster prediction.
So that means Fui Vakapuna is in? No. According to Aaron Wilson, Vakapuna was also released by the Bengals. The team's opening offseason starting fullback (that makes sense, doesn't it?), injured his shoulder early in training camp and never recovered enough to play in the preseason. Vakapuna is injured/waived.

the small scouting department haunts this team
name the last time (excluding gresham) the bengals got a proper TE in the draft? we lack the bodies and scouts, some positions are a secondary thought, at best an afterthought.

huh
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!
Why Coats over Coffman? At least Coffman can catch the ball!
I would say I’m not surprised. More like shocked.

we might be trading for jags safety
if so, dont see the bengals making any wavier moves.
would love them to claim troy smith and toss jto out. but thats not going to happen.

Coats the blocker
Everyone seems to think all a TE does is catch the ball. He won’t be a receiver this year.
We have other players for Palmer to target this year.

+1
Coats beat Coffman in that all important ‘versatility’ category.

Trade
Per league source, the #bengals have traded CB David Jones to the #jaguars for S Reggie Nelson
Coffman was Redundant
Gresham made Coffman redundant and Coats is the best TE blocker on the roster. Remember, we’re still a run-first team where the TE needs to stay on the line to chip the ends and block the linebacker in run support. Now, it’s being reported that Coats had an injured finger all last year which may have affected his pass catching. Not going to be used in the passing game this year, but still may answer why he dropped nearly 20% of his passes last year.
And if Gresham gets hurt?
he’s not exactly been Mr Healthy.

Coats is a pretty good blocker, but he can't hold Reggie Kelly's jock in the blocking category yet.
Reggie will keep teaching him, though.
