Bengals make some cuts, and somehow get better. Whodeyness
What's up my fellow Bengal fans? One week to showdown time. I am super stoked, not only for the start of the season, but for a particular badass recently added to the roster.
Let me start with the "underwhelming" addition to the roster: Dan LeFevour. With UC now under the ranks of Butch Jones, the all-time NCAA TD leader comes to town from CMU as well, only at the expense JustTurnOverSullivan. I'm sure many are still distraught with regards to our backup QB situation, but i certainly feel a lot better with a great talent and dual threat QB to groom under #9. Video evidence for ya:
NOW, a move i am super stoked about: Reggie Nelson. This guy may not have wowed at JAX, but he is one sick mofo. Interesting things I learned, and that many of yall may already know: the Bengals were torn between drafting Leon Hall and Reggie Nelson in 2007. In addition, Nelson played a year of JuCo at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas in 2003. Can you guess which current Bengal Nelson is reuniting with from CCC? That would be 2006 First Rounder Johnathan Joseph. In addition to the Gator Speed of Dunlap and now Nelson, and the nasty demeanor Nelson brings to my favorite Defensive unit (of course the ZFense) the Bengals have the ability to field an entire Nickel Secondary of First Round Picks in JJ, Leon, Roy the Hitman, Adam doesn't play Pacman anymore and now Reggie "The Eraser" Nelson. Without further ado, video evidence of badassness:

Great additions!
A much better second option at QB (though he still needs some grooming, the kid is a GAMER), and any time we can give Zimm 1st round talent I have zero doubt that he will make the fullest use of said talent. I’m pumped about this roster!
sweet
glad to hear you’re as pumped as I am.
my point exactly on LeFevour. We could use a young QB to groom for the future, ya know? Why not grab a guy like him instead of overpaying a guy like JTO.
3 yards and a pile of dust
EXACTLY
LeFevour’s upside is astronomical compared to JTO. Will he pan out? Who knows, but we already know that JTO will likely never be anything more than what he already is. I’m psyched about the Z-FENSE this year too….don’t know that they’ll be able to keep that #4 ranking (based on the tougher schedule) but the unit should be improved over last year, and that’s saying something major.
And what JTO is
is a guy that could never truely pull away from the 3rd string QB. Or Alex Smith, but that seems like splitting hairs.
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
Neither one of these guys is expected to matter much
Don’t get me wrong I love both pickups but you’re talking about a backup safety and a 3rd string QB. I doubt Nelson can win a starting job so if he’s playing it means one of the other injury prone guys went down already.
I think Adam Jones is far more important in terms of the ZFense. If Jones plays well they get to play whatever blitz they want even against 3 WR sets. And they need to blitz ’cause none of the down linemen is a hero.

not necessarily looking for new starters..
the team is pretty well stacked there. What they’ve done is improved their depth, and in the NFL (where I believe every team is a couple injuries away from being severely hampered), DEPTH IS HUGE.

The Zfense this year is going to be SICK.
MJ at linebacker now, which just adds depth to the already great linebacking core, Reggie Nelson with Zimmer coaching him, one of the top (if not THE top) CB tandems in the league with the addition of Adam “Back, man” Jones and a solid D-line.
If the front 4 can step up and pressure the QB this will be one of the top defenses in the NFL.

Not sold on Nelson at all...
He not only is a bad tackler, but he takes bad angles and never seemed to improve at Jacksonville. I wonder about his “football smarts.” I hope Zimmer can coach him up but Mel Tucker isn’t a bad coach in J’ville and Nelson never seemed to improve in 4 years.
Even good players needs a supporting cast of players.
Revis isn’t the man he is without his teammates. He’s the best CB in the league, but without the rest of the defense he wouldn’t be.
If you see, Nelson was pretty descent in his first two seasons. He’s gone down hill when Jax’s defense has been on the decline as a whole. Nelsons poor performance could be due to him trying to do to much and trying to pick up the slack of other players not doing what they are supposed to do. In other words, playing out of position b/c the other DBs are playing out of position. Jaxville is not that good of a team and has been on the decline for the past 2-3 years.
In Zimm we trust!
Just look at what he’s done with this team. Does he have a bunch of stud players? Yep, but you have to ask, would all these guys be producing on the level that they are without Zimm? I highly doubt it. He gets the most out of his guys. Certainly the players are to be credited for their talent, but Coach Zimm is the catalyst that makes the Z-Fense what it is.
