Report: Ravens Sign Houshmandzadeh
It's on.
NFL.com's Jason La Canfora is reporting that the Baltimore Ravens have signed ex-Bengals and Seahawks WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a one-year deal.
Housh had 76 receptions for 911 yards and 3 TDs last year in Seattle.
Update: With Houshmandzadeh in the fold, the Ravens have put WR Mark Clayton on the trade block.
Update 2: Clayton has been dealt to the Rams for undisclosed late-round compensation.

Haha
As if the Ravens needed another slot receiver. He is Derrick Mason Jr. and Anquan Boldin Jr. II
This is our year!
Good line from C. Trent's twitter
“Ravens also now have four wideouts who won’t play special teams.”
Awesome
That’s looking on the bright side! Their gunners won’t match our returners.

We are in big trouble
My biggest fears have been realized. IMO you can hand the division title to Baltimore right now. All of our hopes have been dashed and we are playing for second place. They will dominate the division and are now superbowl bound.. This is the bigggest blunder MB has made since he took over.
Mark my words and mark them well. There is no way we can cover Boldin, Mason, Heap and TJ. They will go thru everyone like a hot knife thru butter.
"If we always agree, one of us is not necessary"
nah their wr core aint all that
old and fragile doesn’t win games.

are you being serious?
i read this as total sarcasm and i hope i’m right. they have 10 slot receivers now and no one who can take the lid off the d until stallworth gets back. in addition, i’d still take our corners in the battles with their receivers. any day of the week.
he makes them a little more difficult to get off the field on 3rd down. but even then, it takes a while for a QB and a WR to become comfortable with one another. he’s not going to be the immediate security blanket to flacco that he was to palmer.
RIP Slim.
and thats an IF
housh doesn’t run his mouth there and wreck the relationship with flacco before he develops one
"wherever Brad St. Louis is and Shayne Graham is about to be." -R.F. Mehl
oh, and
they don’t have ed reed for their first 6 games at least. and their d is not going to be the same without him. they’re not going to be in the bottom half of the league, but i see something similar to pitt last year. they won’t be able to close out games like they should.
RIP Slim.
Congrats brandone - yes I was being sarcastic
I have a few buds who are Ravens fans – very few – but at a cookout today they were raving about the pickup.
How do I really feel? The Ravens got better with the addition of TJ. He will be the big target across the middle that Flacco needs. He will not however solve their lack of a downfield threat without Stallworth.
My problem is that we let emotion interfere with a practical issue. TJ wanted to come back and the question isn’t if he is better than TO, Ocho or Shipley. The question is – is he better than Caldwell? I don’t think there is any doubt about that. TJ could have improved us but instead improved the Ravens. This was a MB blunder IMO.
I think we can beat them – twice – with or without TJ as we are built to compete with them but it will be a bit harder.
As most of you know I am a loyal Bengals fan and I find the posters here as interesting as the team. I actually laughed out loud when virginiastripes called me a 7 year old girl. Easy there virginia – don’t get your panties in a twist – most of the old timers here know me and they picked up on the sarcasm. I just like to have a little fun with you guys once in a while.
"If we always agree, one of us is not necessary"
yeah i've been around here a while
and usually you are level headed, so i thought something was amiss.
i think the bengals signing him would have hurt us more than it would have helped though. yes, i do believe he is better than caldwell and probably shipley right now (mainly because he and palmer know each other so well). the problem lies in the fact that TJ wasn’t going to take anything less than the #3 spot and we need to develop our younger receivers. thats the issue baltimore is going to run into. who are they developing? no one. and what happens when housh is done (which will be soon) and mason retires (any day now).
RIP Slim.
Yes, Carson, I was but I do think it will improve the Ravens chances
But, it does not fix their secondary or stretch the field on O. I think the crucial situation is that IMO they will be able to handle our Oline a little better than we can handle theirs. If Carson can stay upright and have time to step into his throws against them we will be Okay. If Flacco has time he can exploit out biggest D weakness in the 8-12 yard crossing and slant patterns. Our Safety and LB pass coverage is pedestrian and TJ will make that even more difficult. We depend too much on the big hit and TJ, like him or not, can take a punch and still make the catch. Game #2 just got even more important. The Pats are favored and f we lose the first 2 games we are in trouble. We need to win 6 of the first 8 and hope to split a very tough second half schedule if we expect to make the playoffs.
"If we always agree, one of us is not necessary"
LOL
Johnathan Joseph > Housh.
"For what I do, my size is not’’ important, Shipley said. "A lot of guys in the league are 5-11 ½ and 185 pounds. You’ve got to have something that sets you apart. For me, it’s catching every single ball.’’
If you're sarcastic
lolololol u trol me
If you’re serious, you’re being overly-dramatic. One aged receiver isn’t going to fill the holes in their shoddy secondary.
amen
ravens need more help in their secondary then we do.
lets see can our #3 or #4 db cover housh. yes. can the ravens #3/4 dbs cover shipley or caldwell. nope.
"wherever Brad St. Louis is and Shayne Graham is about to be." -R.F. Mehl
I mean, c'mon
Joseph, Hall, and Pacman. That last guy should be too good to be a nickel but he is one. That’s not a trio you want to face.
Why thank you fair sir.
The Orioles are going to open a can of Buck-Wieser on your ass......

Ah, JungleJohn the voice of reason
If I am Mike Brown (thank god I am not) I would have signed TJ to keep him away from us. I thought it was our division before Housh was signed. Now, it is almost a sure thing.
not a bad move for ravens
mason is what 35?
stallworth hasn’t had a solid season since 2005.
boldin rarely plays a full season.
enter a league veteran min contract for a guy that can catch passes from short to mid. not like flacco airs it out that much. housh is a cheap solution for the ravens. not like they paid him 8 million not to play. hi seattle. hi mike brown.
"wherever Brad St. Louis is and Shayne Graham is about to be." -R.F. Mehl
Honestly, I'm not that worried
Even if they win this year, Mason’s nearly done, Boldin’s gonna be thirty, Housh is over thirty, and Heap and Stallworth are thirty. Stallworth’s also been out for a year as well. Throw that in with Lewis and Reed almost in retirement (the two key pieces that make that defense elite other than Ngata) and you’re looking at a Ravens team built for now.
Compare it to the youthful Bengals and you can tell that the team is built both for now and the future. The Ravens will be contenders this year and maybe next year. The Bengals will be contenders for the rest of the decade.
I see your point here with respect to the Ravens being built for now....
but our O line is young as well as Ray Rice and Joe Flacco, centerpieces of the offense. Two young TEs as well who have looked nice. And our D line and LBs will be solid still for quite sometime, other than Ray Lewis (which obviously is a huge loss). Regardless of all this Ravens talk, do you really think you can say the Bengals are contenders for the rest of the decade? Cedric Benson is almost 28, and Carson Palmer is already 30. Idk if you can consider yourself contenders for the next decade when your franchise QB won’t be at the top of his game for that much longer…..

But then again, I'm not afraid.
He doesn’t fill a hole in their shoddy secondary and he’s just another aging receiver that still can’t stretch the field. Slot receivers are great and all, but we should know first-hand what happens when you have a team full of them.
Especially older ones incapable of getting separation.
Let the ratbirds party. We’ll rain on their parade week two.
Didn't see that one coming.
Seems like insurance for Boldin’s next injury.
i wanna see michael johnson
give him an on the field tattoo. something to remember cincy by. so the next time housh wants to open his mouth, he thinks better of it.

housh doesnt always go over the middle
and when the ravens go over the middle it tends to be to their TEs

Heh
All the Ravens fans think they’ve got the season in the bag now. This is kinda fun, they’re all assuming I’m talking trash when I just kinda wanna talk in general.
TJ at league minimum
Sounds like Ozzie’s taking a page from Mike Browns book.
More about the Bengals than Ravens
With an opportunity to sign TJ, how Marvin and Mikey can look at their 53 man roster and determine that caldwell or simpson is more worthy of a spot than housh at a 1yr vet min salary it un-freakin-believable. The guy would have walked right in if the Bengals offered him a contract. Not so concerned about him in Bmore but was a stupid move not for the Bengals to sign him
Who would you cut for him though?
Honestly, Marvin said they would’ve taken them had they not had the team they currently had.
He just wants a shot at the Super Bowl
and the Ravens are a trendy pick.

These players that were here
when Housh was here, know that he was the cancer in the locker room. They know all about Housh and how he does things in route running and preperation for a game. I say we have the upper-hand on this one, as for when he comes across the middle, POW! right in the kisser…Lights Out!! Good night TJ!
How soon we forget?
How can we have the upper hand. Forget that TJ was a tough sob and a first down converting machine? Having him on a division rival versus in stripes, sorry I can’t see how that equates to having the upper hand

Not sure how he’ll fit in Baltimores plans, especially when Stallworth returns. But he’ll make them a better, deeper team.

Housh is still bitter...
That’s how it looks to me anyway. I’m sure he offered himself up to the Bengals, but we really can’t handle him. Between TO and Ocho — that’s enough ego at WR. Adding Housh, who will certainly be playing with a chip on his shoulder, to the mix could’ve been chaos. To go with our division rival seems like he’s just trying to screw us. San Diego or the VIkes would’ve been better bets for him to re-establish himself after tanking in Seattle.
And I guess we can still sign him next year if we want him.
Not scared of the Ravens though. Without Ed Reed in the secondary, they’re going to get shredded by any number of opponents — including us.
Mixed Emotions
I liked Housh but not his attitude. Could have offered him a min deal just to keep him away from the Ravens. Still like him better than Simpson. Hope he gets lit up by the Z-fense!

We gave 9 times as much to Antonio Bryant.
Even with healthy knees, he doesn’t bring 9 times the value.
by IllinoisBengal on Sep 6, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions
this doesn't put Balt over the top, bit it DOES make them better
Everyone seems to be forgetting how TJ plays with a chip on his shoulder. He lost that last season after he got his big contract, but he thrives on a “me against the world” attitude, which is going to fit in perfectly with Balt.
I think their D is still going to be the biggest probelm because it is aging and primed for a big falloff.
But don’t delude yourself – this is potential to be a very big addition for them.

housh
I hate that Housh went to a division rival, although I think he would have upset the team chemistry here….shippley will more than fill his shoes……he ran his mouth about cincinnati and that’s hard to forget….go bengals
eh on 5-20 yard routes
it wont be an issue. housh is not now, nor has he ever been, a separation receiver. he’s a solid possession wr.
your concern should be:
can carr, washington, fisher, and webb cover ocho, to, shipley, caldwell.
bengals have the best 4 dbs in the league we’ll be just vs mason, boldin, housh, stallworth.
bengals and ravens games will come to down to who runs the most and is the most successful against stopping the run.
"wherever Brad St. Louis is and Shayne Graham is about to be." -R.F. Mehl
AGE DOESNT MATTER
Tj is a receiver that knows how to get first downs, Boldin has the ability to take over a game and Derrick Mason is a reliable clutch receiver. I would say we are in trouble but by the ravens picking up Tj they are gonna give us a run for our money no doubt about it
ha
This man has an idea worth looking at. He seems to havbe his head on straight

The ravens should have looked for help in the secondary, not another WR. They will have a hard time stopping the leagues better teams…
by Bdub14 on Sep 6, 2010 4:09 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
...
We did get help in the secondary with josh wilson..webb is back and healthy, so is fabian. I think the only bthreats you guys have recieving is Chad, Ocho, and gresham. Shipley i think will be good but who knows how he will perform against a quality team. It will be very hard to cover chad and owens but can you guys tell me a little bit more about adam jones? He has been away from football for a while , what makes you think he can cover TJ?
by Bm0re blackout on Sep 6, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions
jones
he’s shown remarkable skills for being out all of last year. he’s learning better technique to accompany his physical skills, not using the skills to mask a lack of technique. he’s also shown how fast he can be and has been physical at the line. i’m not going to go all homer and say he’s a number 1 corner for every team in the NFL right now, but I would honestly probably take him over almost any teams #2 and when you consider he only needs to be our nickel corner, he’s going to dominate #3 receivers. obviously housh is a solid #2, so that’s skewed a bit, but i think over the course of the game, their battle would come out pretty even.
and as far as your 2 corners being back. most people coming off of ACL tears need at least a few weeks to get back mentally. i’d worry about no ed reed more than anything.
RIP Slim.
Ummm, Shipely has had a supurb college career.
He’s only dropped 5 passes in 4 years. If he continues this in the NFL, well, you know…
Everyone has good college careers
but the NFL is so different so for now he is only a question mark.

I remember when we had Housh he was crap to Ravens fans.
Now he is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Ravebs fans have no credibility. Don’t waste your breath arguing with all but a select few of them.

by IllinoisBengal on Sep 6, 2010 5:11 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
dunno
but the tj haters have been growing every time he opens his mouth since he left. aside from some major pr work in cincy, this town would not have welcomed him back willingly.
"wherever Brad St. Louis is and Shayne Graham is about to be." -R.F. Mehl
At first
I was all for bringing in TJ once i heard he was cut. Then after I looked at the roster and thought about it, we dont need him. He would be good in the slot, but I really think Shipley and Caldwell can fill in. He is an upgrade over them but not a big enough upgrade to bring his cancer into our locker room. About him on the Ravens he does make them a better team, but I do think we can still cover them. Joseph, Hall, and Jones, and now Jackson, can cover all their recievers.
Well
its really hard for me to picture adam covering Housh. Not because im a baltimore fan, but i just can see housh physically dominating a adam jones who has been away from football for a longtime. I dont beleive leon hall or jonathan joseph will be able to totally dominate boldin like you guys are predicting. I think boldin vs either one of them would be pretty even.
Hall
I really think Hall can take Bolden out of the game, because of him being physical. I think Joseph would have a harder time and that would be about even.
First Baltimore has to play the Jets
We’ll see how they do against the Jets defense. Then they have to limp into Cincy and play us. I don’t think TJ will make a huge difference after that. I do think he’s an upgrade for you, but I don’t think he’s enough.
Give the Ravens credit though
They took TJ over Shayne Graham as their token Bengal toss off.
Of all of the teams to choose from...
I’m so annoyed with TJ. This is clearly a slap in the face of Cincinnati. There were about 30 teams to look at, and he lands on one of the two(Baltimore & Pittsburgh) I really did not want him. For a guy that complains about not being the #1 guy, it seems ridiculous to choose to go to a team that has Boldin and Mason on it. Never mind, Ray Rice factoring in the passing game.
Whatever. So long TJ. Have an unimpressive remainder of a career.
shrug TJ is still sulking
its his own fault, if he wanted to stay, he should have. we moved on after he moved on.
"wherever Brad St. Louis is and Shayne Graham is about to be." -R.F. Mehl
From what I understand, it was a mutual disinterest
The Bengals did not contact him before his move to Seattle. Likewise, he didn’t approach the Bengals FO either. Now, the Bengals are so deep at WR, he’d barely see any action even if they did pick him up. But honestly, I think someone in the organization hurt his feelings, and his signing with the Ravens is as much to get back at Cincy as it is to land on a playoff contender.
He picked Ravens
He picked the team with the best chance to make it to the super bowl.
How do the Ravens have the best chance to make it to the Superbowl?
Last year TJ was whining because he missed the Vikings boat. Well… at league minimum, he could have his choice of just about any team in the league. With Rice out, Favre committed, and Berrian the top WR on the list, I think TJ would jump at the opportunity this time around. The Vikes are SB contenders.
How about the Chargers? The Chargers are in the Superbowl talk every year. With Jackson sitting out, I doubt Rivers would be adverse to throwing to TJ.
What about the Jets? The media seems to think they already won the championship. And they seem to like to collect should-have-been-great wide receivers.
Heck, at league minimum, the Patriots, Colts, Saints, probably wouldn’t mind a third string receiver.
How do any of those teams have any less of a chance of making a Superbowl? And how does he factor in to make a difference on the Ravens any more than any of those other teams?
Of the teams looking
He picked the best team of the teams looking. The Ravens could have gone after TO and Bryant but they didn’t. They would be happy with what they had just like the Vikings,Chargers and Jets. The Jets don’t have a bonafide quarterback and the Chargers have a butthead of a coach calling plays and the Vikes are missing too many key players with a quarterback who won’t pull off the same horse and pony tricks this year. The Ravens have a bonafide offense and a very solid defense. When the injured players return pound for pound they will be the best out there.
Favre has second thoughts
“Brett Favre might be second-guessing himself after Sidney Rice was lost for half the season following hip surgery and Percy Harvin’s struggles with migraines. That’s why the Vikes took a shot with Javon Walker, who has disappeared the last few years with Denver and Oakland but played well with Favre in Green Bay early in his career.”
Didn’t they also release Javon Walker.
Favre is even hurting
Old men don’t heal that fast unless they are shooting up. That’s how Bradshaw kept going so strong in the 70’s.
you know how it goes
band wagons fill up when teams are in their better eras. like all the gits with cheeseheads in the 90s. cowboys fans in the 70s. etc.
sports personalities aren’t any better when it comes to predictions, they tend to favor the current flavor of the era. when was the last time one of them picked the 49ers to make the playoffs. but in the 90s every year they did.
