Andre Caldwell
I'd like to get a bit of everyone's reactions about our boy Caldwell, especially in light of the tough calls we had to make about who to cut at the WR position after preseason. I know Bubba came through for us last year with two game-winning catches, but he seriously disappeared down the stretch, which is when we most needed someone ot step up and take some pressure off of Chad. I saw more out of Quan at the WR position toward the end of the year, and Quan provides a lot more in the special teams department.
Most of my saying this revolves around the fact that we just lost Briscoe to the Bucs, who appeared to be a talented kid and a potential replacement for Chad or TO on the outside. Given that we draft Shipley and have Quan as a backup for the slot, doesn't that make Caldwell the most expendable of our receivers?
I know I'm late to the game with this post, but I was really bummed to lose Briscoe. I'd like to hear others' thoughts on Caldwell, and see if they can cheer me up. I thought it was strange that he was such an automatic lock to make the team. He seems overrated. Of course this doesn't even bring up Simpson...

would like to see cosby get some chances at #4
up to caldwell to earn that spot, every week. for now, caldwell lost his #3 spot to shipley. its up to shipley to earn that spot every week as well.
its a nice issue for a team to have 3 guys that could all be worthy #3 wrs. not a problem many nfl teams have, definitely an issue most teams wish for though.
caldwell and simpson are both playing for jobs in 2011 this year. if they fail to perform when called upon, the bengals won’t shock anyone when they draft 2 wrs next year in the 1st 3 rounds.

+1
Cosby has at least earned a chance (in my mind) for that #4 spot. If nothing else he has come up with some clutch catches in his time in stripes.
This is our year!
I've wondered the same thing
I have commented on other articles that I thought they might keep Cosby, Simpson and Briscoe and cut Caldwell. Cosby would backup the slot behind Shipley, while Simpson and Briscoe would be our future No 1 and No 2. Caldwell just hasn’t shown much this preseason. I think I saw one good block and one reception in the last preseason game. And even Lewis sees a bit of what I have seen apparently, saying:
“Andre Caldwell has to ratchet it up again,” he said of his wide receiver.
So it kind of baffles me that they kept him and let Briscoe get snatched up elsewhere (albeit we can still snag him up at anytime). But hopefully he proves me wrong and becomes a force on this team. I’m just extremely skeptical due to what I have seen from him so far. I have seen more from Briscoe (Caldwell wouldn’t have made that catch), Simpson and especially Cosby.

We haven’t lost Briscoe yet. He’s not lost until someone signs him to their 53. He’s just on loan to the Bucs practice squad for the moment.
I’m more worried about the fact the our #3 QB LeFeever is on the practice squad and available for plucking by some other team. In reading up on him he does seem like he has some talent and the word is that he is very intelligent as well.
Well Stop Worrying
Hes never been on the PS and is on the active roster, just wont be active in games unless, and God Forbid,Carson goes down or JP gets hurt carryin his big brothers shoes to the field.
Experience
I’m with you about being bummed losing Briscoe. I wanted our 6 Receivers to be Chad, TO, Shipley, Cosby, Simpson, and Briscoe. Sure, Caldwell caught 2 game winning TDs against Pittsburgh and Baltimore, but he also fumbled in Oakland, which basically cost us the game and possibly a better seed in the Playoffs (which might have made a difference). Caldwell is barely an average receiver. However, I did figure that it would be Caldwell instead of Briscoe because, after Chad and TO, he is the most experienced. Plus, Caldwell knows the system. I came around to Cosby big time, but if we would have cut Caldwell, then Cosby would have been the most experienced. Cosby with 2 rookies and Simpson (in essence a 3rd rookie) was probably a risk the Bengals did not want to take… IMO
I think though
That Caldwell is close to his ceiling. I think the same of Cosby, but I also think that Cosby is ahead of Caldwell right now. I would trust Cosby to be open and make the cath and run without fumbling in any situation that Caldwll gets open and some he doesn’t.
Cosby has a lot of uses
That one, what, 40-, 50-yarder in the preseason was great. He’s also a great possession receiver able to make a lot of tough catches. I saw some major flashes of talent in the few plays he was in last season. I really like the kid, glad the Bengals held onto him.
Tired of the Caldwell bashing
I’m tired of the Caldwell bashing quan Cosby didn’t do anything close to Caldwell… How do u bash a receiver that won us 2 pivotal games.. IMO he was better than Coles.. Also last year was his first full season give the kid a break.. Cosby and Jerome Simpson both have 0 career touchdowns.. Cosby is so overhyped he’s not even the best returner on the team.. I’d take pacman and Bernard Scott over him easily.. Caldwell is not that bad..Jerome Simpson couldn’t even make the active roster with the wr core we had last year..I’m not buying his preseason performances against guys who are probably at UFL Tryouts as we speak.. Caldwell was clutch last year but he also made mistakes but he won 2 games that we badly needed..I rest my case

I have to ask
Why do you end your sentances with 2 periods?
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
I for one am not so much trying to bash Caldwell, as he did a nice job for us early last year. But I don’t think he will ever be as good as Shipley is right now, and I think he teams contributions are overrated.
Cosby on the other hand had 3 key blocks in the Scott return against Pittsburgh. It seems like I see Cosby on ever teams play doing something. I think Cosby is near as good at the # 4 reciever as Caldwell.
Possibly Simpson?
So you saw Briscoe as the possible replacement for Chad, right? I’m not sure how right you were about that. The guy was good in college, but he slid to the 6th round for a reason. If he couldn’t make the roster, I’m sure the coaching staff must have thought the last spot was either Simpson or Briscoe and decided that Simpson still had more potential. I’m not sold on the fact that he’ll be a good football player, but maybe Brisco’s weaknesses were shining through on this level.

still not sold on simpson
until he can play 1-2 games without suffering from reverse cranial anus syndrome

Housh slid to the seventh round and he's third on the Bengals receptions list???
Welker had issues before hitting it off in New England. There’s always the anomaly and until Briscoe takes a snap, how can you write him off?
housh worked his way into the starting roster
by making the most of his chances.
so far simpson has made the least of the chances his been given. theres a difference.

I'm not writing him off
Just trying to explain the reasoning. I think Dez would have been a better project than Simpson. I can’t really pretend to understand the move, just give the best explaination I could come up with.

All Caldwell has to do to succeed this year is
Be where Carson wants him to be.
Get open.
Make the catch.
Caldwell is the # 4. When he’s in, then he should be able to get open against a lot of coverages trying to keep up with the T.Ocho Show.
2010 - The Year of the Tiger.
Caldwell is not a game changer...
but he’s going to be open with the guys guys opposite him and Gresham controlling the middle. He’ll be the forgotten man, which makes me think he’ll have a productive year.
yeah he'll be open
b/c he’s running the wrong routes..
