NFL Voids Cary Harris' Contract

After Tom Nelson was placed on Injured Reserve in mid-December, the Bengals signed Marvin White to to the 53-man roster. White recorded one tackle all season and that was on special teams against the San Diego Chargers. Around the same time, the team filled its last remaining practice squad spot by signing safety Cary Harris, replacing Jeromy Miles who was promoted earlier that month.

After the season concluded, Harris was one of five players promoted to the offseason roster.

On Tuesday, the league voided the contract which releases him to free agency, according to Joe Reedy. Geoff Hobson, who writes the issue was for "procedural reasons", says that the Bengals are not "pursuing a re-signing at this time".

And here we were worrying about Johnathan Joseph this whole time.

Makes One Wonder

If the Bengals are sooo outta touch with the league, they dont even know what paper work is right, how many times have we seen this, either they are too stupid to concept it or they leave a gap so anytime they want out on a contract, they can,Im sure Mike is saying,I feel fine about letting Cary Harris go,I think we are OK at safety,I look foward to bringing back winning football, even tho we dont change our operations on how we do things, btw, let me put this out there and someone tell me,when Marvin Lewis walked out on meeting #2,you think he called his representatives to see if he had any hits yet,and when they told him NO SORRY,you think Marvin thought, wow,I havnt even got one phone call of interest, maybe I better just take this deal because I wont see even close to 3mill a year as Cordinator, and that would be starting all over, you think maybe that was what went thru Marvins mind, cause think,he didnt get anything, and he didnt get much more money,I hate to say it,I really think he seen no offers whatsoever, and got scared he wouldnt be a HC anyplace in the NFL,and realality check came into play and he knew he had no choice after he left that meeting #2 and his reps told him on the phone, not one interest in the NFL had called…think about it.

Really?

Maybe the NFL should have first voided Dez Briscoe’s contract for procedural reasons, mainly paying him an active roster salary to play on a practice squad. Of course, that probably would have taken too much time away from Roger Goddell’s constant search for ways to get his name in the headlines.

let me ask then Chris

if he got paid those games he was on the PS,shouldnt the Bengals get some compensation back from Harris,if the paperwork is wrong, cant have it both ways..correct?

also

whats the big deal, why cant the league office look at the language of the contract as its sent to the league office and contact the team on whats wrong with it,and fax it back for corrections, instead of leaving it be,knowing it along it was wrong, and go public with it,I thought the league office worked with the teams, not to embarrass them publicly.

I agree...

I’m still irked about what the Bucs did with Briscoe, though there’s no rule banning it (yet). My money is that the league wasn’t the one that caught the error. It seems like something an agent would catch in order to try to gain a better provision in his contract with a team. It was probably nothing too serious and probably not the first time it’s happened in the league.

they can't create a "Briscoe Rule"

that would be a clear anti-trust violation unless they negotiated it with the union as part of the new CBA. And there’s no way the union is going to put a cap on salaries! Let it go my friend…

As for the Cary Harris contract being voided, this happens more often than people think. It’s not a big deal and the issue is usually corrected by the team and resubmitted. Why the team didn’t think he was worth signing now when it was a good move two weeks ago is beyond me. Perhaps Marvin is getting more say in personnel moves (as TruWhoDey suggests above).

Why is everybody so in love with Briscoe?

The Bengals could’ve matched the salary but chose not too. Life goes on. I just dont get it.
