Mike Zimmer Wary Of Indianapolis' Wide Receivers

Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is a little concerned with the starting wide receivers of the Indianapolis Colts. According to Zimmer, Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon will be the best due of receivers his defense will have faced all year, saying,

"This will be the best receivers we play by far," defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. "It's not even close."

Reggie Wayne is a five-time Pro-Bowler and has proven to be the type of receiver that defensive coaches game-plan around. He is struggling a little bit so far this year, due Peyton Manning's injury, which has left him with Kerry Collins and Curtis Painter. Garcon is a talented speedster who came on strong towards the end of last year. He also seems to have developed a nice repertoire with Curtis Painter and leads the team with four touchdown receptions.

Star-divide

In week one, the Bengals were able to hold the Browns receivers in check, not allowing a single one to break the 100 yard mark. The two touchdown receptions that the Browns had were to their tight-ends. The following week Eric Decker went off to the tune of five receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Considering that the Broncos were so depleted at wide receiver that they were using current starting quarterback Tim Tebow as their fifth receiver, it has to be considered a terrible outing by the Bengals secondary.

During the third week of the regular season, the Bengals were able to hold the 49ers receivers in check, not allowing a single one to break the 100 yard mark. Tight end Vernon Davis did haul in eight receptions for 114 yards though. In Week four, the Bengals held the entire Buffalo Bills receiving core in check, not allowing anyone to break 60 yards receiving.

Wide receiver Jason Hill of the Jacksonville Jaguars posted over 100 yards, but his performance is a little skewed considering 74 yards were gained on one play due to a busted coverage by Reggie Nelson. All other receivers were shut down.

Do you guys agree with Zimmer that Wayne and Garcon are the best receiver tandem the Bengals have faced all year?

They seem to get open

and have really sticky hands. Courageous as well, don’t mind taking a hit to make a catch. Intangibles count and these guys play with a lot of confidence. As to the best? I don’t know, they are definitely better than me.

i dont think the colts receivers are ready for the intensity of a partially filled PBS

anyway i thought it was leon hall’s fault on that blown coverage for a 74 yard reception

Reggie Nelson

Leon Hall was supposed to carry him and drop him to Nelson. Nelson forgot to play zone and instead was playing man-to-man and was out of position—again.

Wouldn't Garcon look good in Bengals stripes next year?

He’ll be an unrestricted free agent, along with an excellent class of other WRs. With Simpson and Caldwell both UFAs, we’ll need another starting wideout to go along side A.J. Green. Shipley hopefully gains his form back or Whalen steps up to fill the void until then.

Garcon has great speed and runs excellent routes. He’s even made Curtis Painter look good. Plus with the other names on the market there should be some value to be had although it may not be Garcon (Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, Mike Wallace [RFA], Steve Johnson, DeSean Jackson, Marques Colston, and on and on…)

Of that list I'd prefer Garcon..

Even though he has a knack for being up and down. Cheaper and less ego than the rest. Don’t know if he’d want to leave Manning and maybe Andrew Luck, however.

Maybe he will if...

…the Bengals finish 9-7 or so and the Colts finish 1-15? :)

Of those, I like Colston.

Better compliment to A.J. Green.

Bowe would be most likely to leave.

the bowe and green combo would be awesome! would love to have any of those pickups, however, to improve our number 2 wr option.

Just keep the guys we got.

We don’t need anyone elses WR’s we have ones that are just fine now. Except maybe Caldwell.

Well there you have it

Andre, time to pack up and go down the road. I’d be more than happy with Garcon as his replacement. That would be a big upgrade for us.

+1

I’ve tried for a long time to talk myself into thinking Caldwell is “ok” or at least could develop into a solid 2/3. With the information we have up to this point, i’m starting to doubt he’ll ever be much more than a secondary slot receiver and fill-in starter due to injury. If we had the chance to replace him with Garcon starting opposite Green, we’d have to look at that very seriously. Then we have a healthy Shipley back in the slot next year, and a year more seasoned version of Gresham. All of a sudden a supposed liability going into this season would appear to be, to me at least, pretty darn strong.

Simpson and Caldwell have both had time to show us.

By the end of this season, Simpson may prove he was worth the wait. But Caldwell?? Of course, the Giant Forehead formally known as Rome Simpson, might not be around no matter how good he does as a receiver if the postal pot-gate doesn’t prove his innocence.

When you talk about someone opposite AJ and next to Shipley

You need someone of a different skill set. Caldwell and Simpson are too closely related to AJ. IF the Bengals add a new receiver they need a big, physical guy, not a speedster like Garcon.
