Offensive And Defensive Snap Breakdown Through Six Games This Season

With the bye week this week, it seemed like as good an opportunity to list the snap count for both the offense and defense through the first six weeks into the season. Here are some interesting notes:

+ Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap are true pass rushers. Over 65% of Geno Atkins' defensive snaps are during passing downs with him rushing the quarterback. The same thing applies to Carlos Dunlap, with 66.3% of his defensive snaps during passing situations. Defensive tackle Pat Sims and Domata Peko are clearly your run defenders, with 57.1% of Sims' defensive snaps during rushing downs, followed with Peko at 52.7%.

+ Iron Men on the offensive line. Andrew Whitworth, Andre Smith, Nate Livings and Kyle Cook are the only offensive players to take part in every offensive snap this season.

+ Cedric Benson run blocks. Cedric Benson's statistic on run blocks seems slightly confusing because it would appear highly unlikely that Benson would be a run blocker on 16 runs this year. But based on how the statistics are categorized, Andy Dalton and Bruce Gradkowski account for six runs (which means they're scrambling out of the pocket) and it would also include wide receiver screens where the pass isn't going forward (aka lateral).

The season breakdown.

Benson Breakdown

Ok, I’m not the smartest guy in the world, but let me see if I understand this correctly. Out of Benson’s 263 snaps, he ’s ran routes 97 times (37% of the time) and he carries the ball 122 times (46% of the time).

I’d like to know how often he was targeted in the passing game and how many he dropped and then how many he caught for 3yd gains.

Wouldn’t it be better to cut back on his routes and keep him in house to help pass protect? Just wonderin’.

Josh

Can you add beside the defensive snap count the total runs and pass by opposing offesnes? We know the total fro the offense from the offensive line, but I would like to know the defense.

It must be inordinately taxing to be such a boob. ~ The Brain

Manny Lawson makes $1M more than Thomas Howard

yet he has half the snaps of Howard. Huh? This is why a first-round linebacker only makes sense if he can rush the passer. Rivers only had 51% participation last year. When you look at value on defense: CB, S and MLB see the most plays. Seems to me you want to spend the most money here to ensure that you have the best players on the field for most of the time. Specialists are important too, but if your regulars are blah well…
