Ask Field Gulls: SB Nation's Seattle Seahawks Site

What up, Cincy Jungle?

I do not think we've ever done this before on your blog but this is a QandA thread to discuss all things about our Seahawks against your surprising Bengals at CenturyLink Field this Sunday. Our last regular season meeting was a 24-21 win at Seattle thanks to a hundred turnovers by Cincinnati and a big touchdown by Nate Burleson. Things are different now compared to 2007, mainly the Bengals appear to have found their QB while the Seahawks plod along with career back-ups.

So ask away but just to address a few things that will definitely come up

Star-divide

- Aaron Curry was traded because he was terrible and not getting the defense. He wasted his physical talents by having lousy football IQ. He's undeniably a bust which is unfortunate because we wanted him to succeed and occasionally he made some plays, but not enough to justify his 4th overall pick. Of course immediately after we trade him he recorded a forced fumble.

- Pete Carroll wanting Carson Palmer in the offseason or any other USC QB in the future is just a rumor. If anything he has no problems dumping former USC talent like Lofa Tatupu.

- The Seahawks are almost out of cornerbacks. Marcus Trufant and Walter Thurmond III are on IR.

Rec this fanpost to the top and in turn get a Bengals user to go to Field Gulls and post a similar fanpost and we'll converse with each other all week.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors.

Hello!

I know practically nothing about your team but I do know you’re trying to contend with two back-up caliber QBs as your signal-callers this season. Is that working out for you?

What would you say the strengths of your team are?

by Doc Scratch on Oct 25, 2011 10:47 PM EDT reply actions

It's not working

They show signs of good play and a lot of bad. Inaccuracy galore and Jackson’s pocket presence is horrific. This was pure stopgap since they were out of the running for a top 10 QB in this year’s draft. I’d have rather gone with Vince Young than Tarvaris, as Vince’s ceiling is/was much much higher and has shown a better ability to play football, but Young can be a bit of a pouty person.

Whitehurst is in the last year of his contract, he’s almost certainly doomed to go if Carroll and Schneider decide QB is a must. Basically there’s no way Jackson AND Whitehurst will be on the 2012 squad.

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

by SSreporters on Oct 25, 2011 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Young wasn't familiar with Bevell's system

and is probably a very bad fit for the more traditional WCO that Bevell wants to run. We grabbed TJ because we needed a guy who was familiar with the system that wouldn’t cost a ton and that could take a few hits behind a developing OL. He’s a pure stopgap.

are your corners as bad as they sound

How’s Earl Thomas looking?
Is your first round tackle even playing?
Any pass rushers to fear?

Very curious about Carpenter..

I know I was shocked when I heard his name called. Also curious about if our DTs have done anything for you. McDonald and Shirley.

by Cry on Oct 25, 2011 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

McDonald is a rotational DT

See him on occasion as a 3rd down lineman. Not noticeable because we have two stellar DTs in our lineup anyway.

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

Shirly was cut today I think

"If we always agree, one of us is not necessary"

by JUNGLEJOHN on Oct 26, 2011 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Earl Thonas - Pro Bowl caliber in a few years

Maybe next year.

James Carpenter is playing as a RT and can’t pass-block to save his life, so far.

Pass-rushers? Chris Clemons has 6 sacks and is well on pace to break his career-high of 11 from last year. Other than that? Not much else. He is the pass rush and maybe Raheem Brock.

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

by SSreporters on Oct 26, 2011 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

That could be a problem for your QB

Carpenter will get chewed up and spit out with Dunlap in front of him. Dunlap is very hungry right now and is showing that he’s not afraid to eat RTs who can’t pass block.

by WHYUS!! on Oct 26, 2011 7:25 AM EDT up reply actions

With Marcus Trufant and WT3 out for the year, we're relying heavily on nearly complete unknowns.

Brandon Browner has been hit and miss, but he’s not great.

Earl Thomas is great.

James Carpenter is playing, but not playing well.

Don’t worry too much about a pass rush unless you can’t pass block to save your life and it looks like the Bengals are pretty good at pass blocking.

Can you waive the 2-day waiting period so I can do the same at Field Gulls?

If not, I understand, but I’m curious since the guys at Buffalo Rumblings could do this too.

by Doc Scratch on Oct 26, 2011 12:22 AM EDT reply actions

whats the feeling about this game for seahawks fans

Expect win, expect loss, expect a close game? And what are expectations for the seahawks the rest of the season.

by JCompton41 on Oct 26, 2011 10:22 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I expect a close game, but it comes down to the health of our offense in a lot of ways.

We were without four starters on offense against Cleveland and it showed. We could get all four of those players back. At home, I think it’ll be a close game if that happens, and I would say that the Bengals have the edge, but not a huge one. Playing on the road is tough, playing in Seattle is really tough.

That is one of the worrys I have for this game is a rookie qb playing in Seattle.

by JCompton41 on Oct 26, 2011 7:03 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Agree, but

you know, I like this game as a really good preperation for Dalton going to Pitt. I just hope he stays as composed as he has all season. I wouldnt mind if the Hawks had to play without lynch and jackson agian lol

by TheVilified on Oct 26, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

What do Seahawk fans

think about Pete Carroll? Is he a good game manager? A players coach? Does he have the respect of the fans, players, and front office? Or is he on the hot seat?

by WHYUS!! on Oct 26, 2011 10:55 AM EDT reply actions

Many of us were skeptical at first

and the manner in which he started the rebuild (getting rid of scheme misfits, stocking up on older marginal talent, etc) didn’t gain him many fans but he’s been surprisingly effective and the team is looking to be on an upward trajectory.

He’s got a 5-year contract and the rebuild isn’t going to be officially done until we get a QBotF (probably next year), so I think he’s doing all right.

by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Oct 26, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Carroll has kept this team near .500 while almost completely rebuilding the roster.

He’s bringing in players the fit his system and “buy in” to what he’s trying to do with this team.Carroll essentially hired GM John Schneider, and together they’ve done a good job of snatching up freely-available players and turning them into contributors. The defense in particular seems to be getting better every week, even after losing/tossing aside Lofa Tatupu, Aaron Curry and Marcus Trufant (losing 2nd-year CB Walter Thurmond could be a problem, though). The offense is young and has a ton of talent, but it’ll take time for all the pieces to gel together.

by J.L. White on Oct 28, 2011 2:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm expect us to try to dictate the pace of this game with our offense.

I am guessing that with Benson out, the ‘Hawks’ secondary depleted, and our tackles’ excellent performance in pass protection we’ll push the pace and run the offense through Dalton, spreading the ball around through the air while adopting a running back by committee.

Defensively, I would guess that we’ll throw some fresh looks using Dontay Moch in his first game back (a few key snaps, not with him getting a ton of PT) to change up the look every now and then, but overall we’ll be relying on our solid d-line rotation to defend the run and provide the lions’ share of the pressure to the QB.

If you were game planning for the ’Hawks, what would you like to see them do on Sunday?

by Boomer Lion on Oct 26, 2011 10:56 AM EDT reply actions

Last year we used a lot of the "Bandit" package (6-7 DBs with lots of blitzing)

It was very effective against Cutler and some of the less experienced QBs. We haven’t used it at all this year. I think it might be a good idea to use against a rookie like Dalton, if we have the personnel for it.

by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Oct 26, 2011 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I probably wouldn't show up in the film study!

I hope you guys don’t do that. That’s similar to my reasoning that we should make some blitzes that feature Moch – since he’s a rookie who has been injured, I shouldn’t be withing the scope of the ‘Hawks’ game plan.

With your secondary so depleted, I’m wondering whether the staff will try to simplify the packages to accommodate the new guys or use a more elaborate plan to compensate for their weaknesses.

I’m looking forward to watching the game.

by Boomer Lion on Oct 26, 2011 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Kelly Jennings

What are the Seahawks fans thoughts on Kelly Jennings. We traded for him but have not really had a chance to see him play since he has been battling injury. My understanding is he was a first round pick and appears to fast and athletic and I even read somehere he volunteered to do long snaps for you all once when your long snapper went down so it would seem he’s pretty much willing to do anything to help the team. Both of our starting corners Leon Hall and Nate Clemens are very solid corners, especially Leon but neither are really spead guys. When we face Baltimore and Pittsburg, they both each have a young fast receiver who can stretch the field (Mike Wallace and Torry Smith) neither are very big but both are very fast. Pacman returning should help us significantly with these match ups but I’m hoping Jennings may help in this area as well and wanted your thoughts on him as a 3rd corner and how he can match up against a small fast receiver.

by biggie22 on Oct 26, 2011 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

Jennings has great speed and change of direction, but not much else. Zero ball awareness, isn’t physical at all, isn’t an interception threat. Just another 1st round bust courtesy of Tim Ruskell.

Aaron Curry is the first Seahawk since Walter Jones to have a legitimate shot at Hall of Fame induction - John Morgan

by Fearless Frog on Oct 27, 2011 4:22 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

His ball awareness was good for illegal contact and PI

Since he never turned around for the ball.

Kam Chancellor now has as many career INTs as Jennings.

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

2 players i got to ask about:

1) Kam Chancellor. Holy crap what’s the story with this guy. And what would it take for the seahawks to trade him to cincy =)

2) T-Jack. I know of him from following the vikes. Not going to make excuses for his time in minny, wondering how the fans in seattle are feeling about TJack. Blaming him or his line for his issues? Has been improving at all in Seattle or do the fans even want him back next season? Guy seems like a career backup to me at most. He pretty much failed to get it done in Minnesota any time he was given a chance.

His last two games are his best two games so far, so yes, he is improving.

Given his experience (he really doesn’t have THAT much of it) and our young offensive line (two rookies and a 2nd year player and a third year player) I am not unsatisfied with Jackson at all. I think we would have beaten Cleveland if he had just played.

Kam Chancellor is awesome and we’re not letting go of him any time soon.

He has at least through next year

He’s got a 5-year contract and about a 3-year rebuilding plan. If we don’t get a QB next year and have a losing season, I think Pete will be on the hot seat in year 4.

Not drafting a QB next year = Hot seat for me

Regardless of these first two years. I’ve been cool with Carroll but they have to address this issue next year.

Whenever the Seahawks win the Super Bowl and Carroll retires.

Other than not being able to scare up a better QB than Tarvaris Jackson or Charlie Whitehurst, not sure what he’s done wrong.

by J.L. White on Oct 28, 2011 3:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Carroll has

Done fairly well IMO

He came into that town and it didnt have much talent really. Plus they got rid of their longtime starting QB and are dealing with that, usually its a few years before someone else really takes control at QB (Bengals got super lucky (or were smart?) this year with Dalton)

Beast Mode. Another bird with no wings is a penguin. We shall see.

But really this should be another defensive fist fight. I expect the QB play to be better this week, and it’s at home so the game is a toss up in my mind.

Traitor on the way to Qwest field, and happy about it!

Oddly enough I grew up in Northwest WA, am a die-hard Mariners fan and actually got to see game 5 of the 1995 ALDS and Edgar’s double (I was 12, so sadly I didn’t get to appreciate it in quite the same way I might now, but nonetheless…). Oddly enough though, when I was 5 I saw those awesome orange and black tiger stripes, Ickey Woods, etc., and always followed the Bengals. I’ve been catching hell for it my whole life (born, raised, and still live in the NW), but stuck with the Bengals though the 90s and 00s every single year (I lost a lot of bets as I got older). Anyway, expect to see some Bengal’s gear at Qwest field on Sunday as I prepare for the rare day that I don’t have to wait until 9 pm (cutting myself off from all media and outside contact to avoid learning the outcome) to watch the game on NFL Rewind. Let’s say, 28-13 Cinci? See you there!

Tough game for the Seahawks

You made things tricky in the second half, but the mistakes and penalties cost you big.

Getting a good QB should be top priority, and some Corners, but overall, your defense is solid and you are a better team then your record indicates.
