Where have all the Brandon Tate haters gone?
It was almost a weekly ritual, that after each week, there would be posts complaining that in his 1st year returning punts, Brandon Tate was no good as a punt returner and we needed to get Quan Cosby back asap.
I can't find any of those posts today?
I'm wondering if the 56 yard TD return had anything to do with that, or if it's just coincidence?
2009 Q Cosby 40 returns, 11.9 average, 0 TD's, long of 60
2010 Q Cosby 30 returns, 7.5 average, 0 TD's, long of 20
2011 B Tate 24 returns, 12.3 average, 1 TD, long of 56
Brandon Tate already has more TD's than Quan had in either of his 2 seasons with Cincy, and currently his average is higher than either of Quan's 2 seasons. On a side note, Tate's kickoff return average of 25.1 is higher than Quan's averages of 18.4 in 2009 and 14.7 in 2010.
So maybe (at least for 1 week) people will be happy with Brandon Tate retuning kicks for Cincy?

Tate likely won’t be able to be a 4th or 5th WR like Cosby was, but he seems like an instant upgrade in the kick return game.
And I think as he starts returning punts more regularly, that will only get better.
In Tate's 2nd year in the NFL he had 24 receptions for 432 yards and 3 TD.
The real question is when he starts producing in Cincinnati. The #1 advantage he had over Cosby when they acquired Tate is that Tate is a legit #3 or 4 WR.
Change gone come mane! Trust me! Cause i Bleed tigerblood!--Jerome Simpson
14 of his 24 receptions went for 1st downs.
I know he got here late, but he should know the plays by now. I think had they been playing anybody other than Seattle coming out of the bye, we see more of him.
Maybe next week is his breakout week?

i dont think we need him as reciever
Green Simpson caldwell and hawkins all have a roll, Tate can probably play if someone were to go down, but I don’t see him getting anything otherwise.

Admittedly..
I was, and am still skeptical of Tate. I think he’s fast, but I think he carries the ball too loosely and I am always in fear that he will fumble. Seems like a loose cannon in decision making. Earlier in the season on several kick-offs, he kept brining the ball out and getting us buried when he should have used better judgement and downed it. Decisions like that are likely to hurt us as we go into the tough part of our schedule in the AFCN where the defenses and special teams play is much better.
I represent the Bengals of Cincinati with extreme passion and prejudice and make no apologies for it!
my thoughts exactly
one great play does not vindicate him. He has made some unbelievably stupid decisions and doesn’t protect the ball. I think the top end on Tate is higher, but the risk factor is exponentially higher. If he gets smarter and protects the ball, it’s an upgrade. If not then it’s just a bomb waiting to explode.
All of his decisions were better today.
If he continues to make good decisions I will support him. I don’t think there are many Tate Haters so much as Tate Fearers. I am afraid Tate will give us worse field position that Quan in most cases, for example, a 12 yard return from the 5 is not as good as a touchback. I also thought Cosby had better ball security. Nothing is worse than muffing a punt, because the D just got off the field, now they have to come back with no rest, and worse field position.
It must be inordinately taxing to be such a boob. ~ The Brain
Not a B.Tate hater, but..
Here are the stats for 2011 (Cosby signed with the Broncos after week 2):
Kick-off returns:
Quan Cosby: 7 KR, 188 Yds, 26.9 avg, Long of 37 Yds, 0 TDs
Brandon Tate: 18 KR, 452 Yds, 25.1 avg, Long of 45 Yds, 0 TDs
Punt returns:
Quan Cosby: 13 PR, 157 Yds, 12.1 avg, Long of 30, 0 TDs
Brandon Tate: 24 PR, 295 Yds, 12.3 avg, Long of 56, 1 TD
There’s hardly any difference between the two though Tate has more returns and I realize that it gets harder to maintain a high average consistently. The TD run last night (which is where Tate gets both his “Long of 56 and 1 TD” from) was awesome, but I am not sure he is an upgrade over Cosby (at least not a significant one) based on these numbers.
hes more of a threat than cosby.
Cosby is more consistent, but Tate is far far more explosive.

yeah, i knew Quan had better #'s in Denver
but i didn’t want to include them because that’s not an apples to apples comparison.
Tate in 2011 is returning kicks with pretty much the same special teamers that Quan used here in previous years. While in Denver, Quan is returning with completely different players & coaches & strategies.
Not to mention, that in the Denver home games, the ball is going to travel farther, and the kicks are more likely to travel further than the kick coverage, allowing for a few more yards on each return before the retuner meets up with the guys covering the kicks.
apples to apples?
I think the rules changes are far more significant. It seems like there’s at least 3 or 4 big returns every weekend.
JCompton – I know what you mean, but imho, stats are easier to use when comparing two players.
ephram – agree with indesignkat in terms of change of rules being significant.
Also, its possible that the thin air means reduced hangtime allowing the returner to get the ball more quickly and thereby allowing him to return the ball farther. However, i have to see the numbers to actually believe it.
Ummmm lol....
When he first got here I was super excited. Thought that he was an upgrade in the both kick return and punt return game and might compete for the 4th WR spot with Caldwell. Without Stats… Shipley went out and he is still not getting any snaps with the O. Hawkins came from nowhere and is now the teams 4th WR. Tate at the beginning was scary to watch. bring the ball out from deep in the end zone on kick returns, faircatching balls at the 5 yd line, just making some bad decisions. However I will chop those up to growing pains. The last few games he has gotten better. The special team players had to get use to his speed too. He is Progressing and the TD hopefully is just the beginning. Pacman is going to compete for that spot too, even better!
"Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, I then acquire the ability to do it even if I didn't have it in the beginning."
To start out the season, I was defending Tate
though I admit I was extremely frustrated the one game he made the horrible play and let the ball bounce inside the 5 yard line.
The rest of the time I’ve said we need to give him a chance. As I said before, he still has to learn when to take the risk and when to play it safe. Seems like he’s made a lot of progress in that area recently.
What do you expect from the fickle fairweather Bengals fan base?
I did like me some Pacman punt returning though…
i miss being able to say Quasby
but the Tater-Tot Trot last night was something special
The Curse of Bo Jackson: Jan 13th,1991- present day
I was never all that big on Quasby, and I was really excited to get Tate.
I’ve defended him all along, partially because I knew he’s capable of doing what he did yesterday. I’ll live with a few questionable decisions in return for having a punt returner that can take it back all the way. A few years from now when Tate gets a little smarter (remember that this is his first full season returning punts) everyone in Cincy is going to love him.
I was skeptical but....
He felt the pressure with Pacman starting off with a 60+ yd return to start off with. I think he realized that he needed to step his game up. The return for a TD was huge, but I did like what Pacman had to offer on his first play back from injury. The problem with Tate is that he’s not utilized as a slot WR. He was at his best when lined up in the slot with Hakeem Nicks on his outside at UNC. Tate needs to be utilized with a reverse. He excelled at this in college, but injury took him down at his peak. If he lost a step since the injury, then I understand why we haven’t seen him in the slot or a WR reverse. However, the return for a TD last night reminded my of the Tate who played at UNC with plenty of talent in the tank.
One thing I was impressed with is his stamina on that return.
Obviously we have to give Pacman a pass because it was his first play back from injury so he understandably isn’t in top shape right now and he also got hurt a little bit on that play, but still, you could see that he was winded at the end of his return. Tate came off the field after his and wasn’t even breathing heavy. Even with the world class athletes in the NFL, a lot of punt returners would come off the field a little bit winded after such a long return (especially since he had a long kickoff return not too much before that.) I mean, I’ve seen multiple guys who are great returners fall down within the ten yard line or get chased down by a slower player or something because of pure exhaustion.
Brandon Taters!...
What, nobody…Tap tap… Is this thing on? Tough crowd tough crowd!

never was
always said that people expecting any returner to average the TDs that hester does, are ill-informed. hester’s TD average per # of returns is almost 1/2 the amount of the all-time #2 guy in nfl history. the fact remains, a good returner, will on the the average nfl season, return only 1 or 2 for a TD.
tate is good.
" Mike Brown is the owner that Cincy doesn't deserve, not the one it needs..."
I was one of them!
And rightfully so. He didn’t show anything at all during the first few weeks he was here. Actually, if you look, it look like he was getting worse at returning. I guess he heard me say he sucked in that game thread when he actually did suck that game..
I’ll take the credit for his turn around… :) I hope he still continues to impress.
Do you expect everyone to hate blindly?
I wasn’t a fan of Tate, but that TD return was pretty awesome, so I’ve got to give Tate the credit he’s due.
On the other hand, what he primarily showed us through the first five weeks was dicey at best. I think we’ve already covered his poor decisions and his loose hold on the ball, but another thing I haven’t liked from him is his tendency to try a little shake ‘n’ bake too often. So many times I see a return that Tate could have just made one cut and taken a bunch of free yards – it’s also the kind of move that tends to get you out into the open and able to return for those TDs (and what we saw Tate do on his TD return).
Instead, it always seemed to me that Tate would take his cut, then hesitate, try and take another cut, and then, if he still had time, try another cut. It would almost always end up with him getting tackled by a large number of players.
In conclusion, I haven’t liked Tate – not because of his numbers (they have been decent), but because it felt like almost every punt return he had could have easily gone for another 5+ yards. He just hesitated too much. It’s not a case of Tate vs. Cosby, but a case of Hesitant Tate vs. Confident Tate.
+1
Never thought Cosby was much more than average, but then avg was good because our ST’’s always sucked. We are definitely being treated to some outstanding ST play this year – particularly the unheralded blocking. I was calling for Hawkins to get a shot because he seems more explosive than Tate. “Hesitant Tate” would hesitate then run right into the nearest tackler – ref the last KO return Sunday. Aether’s right – we need more Confident Tate, and perhaps now we’ll see it more consistently.
Joel, get off the babysitter
One thing I read from the Mothership that could bode well in this regard
Jones didn’t return for the rest of the game, but he was there when Tate asked him how he did it.
“Don’t juke, take it and go.”
Which is what Jones did. But his one cut at the point of attack as cornerback Leon Hall and wide receiver Andrew Hawkins cleared it out for him, caused him to tweak the hamstring.
"Sometimes people forget that everybody is down there coming after you," Jones said. "But you’ve got to slow it down and get it up the field and go."
Jones’s enthusiasm turned out to be contagious. And he was the first one to greet Tate after the touchdown with a chest bump. Tate has frustrated Simmons at times with his stutter-steps, but the decisive move on the touchdown had him smiling.
"He works hard and he’s been getting better," Simmons said.

i like it
Tate is a very good kickoff returner, but new to returning punts.
If he can learn how to return punts (he’s getting better at deciding what to do inside the 5 yard line), and if he’s now getting advice from another good returner, and using it to do better……..well then, that is just good news all around.
Excellent news.
I saw this problem from the very first punt return that Tate had. I was disappointed to see it go uncorrected, it’s the kind of thing Simmons should be coaching. If that’s the kind of response we get from Tate when he gets the necessary advice from his team-mates, then we could start to see some much better returns from Tate.
I was one of the haters and I'm still not sold
Here is why:
1. Although he returned the kick for a TD, it was against the worst kickoff defense in the league.
2. He still makes bad decisions and a majority of the time a bad decision on a return has greater negative consequences than the plus on a return (b/c unless you have Hester, the positive returns are not TDs).
3. He doesn’t do anything else. This is my main problem with Tate returning kicks. He doesn’t play any other special teams and he doesn’t play offense or defense. That means he takes up a roster spot to return 5-6 kicks a game. We have Hawkins, who plays offense and other special teams, who could return kicks and, when healthy, we have Adam Jones who can return kicks and also plays defense. Having someone who does something else along with returning kicks allows you to have an extra guy active on game days. That can pay huge dividends.
come on
Ginn has fairly recently started to show something, but to put him in the same category as Hester is just silly.
The thing though, I think he could be a viable receiver also
He may wind up being Caldwell’s replacement next year? Who knows? But as Grizzlyfox pointed out
In Tate’s 2nd year in the NFL he had 24 receptions for 432 yards and 3 TD.So the question I see is, when do they start using him on offense?

If Calwell continues droping balls, it might even be at the end of this year.
I think Tate would be good to try as a WR.
Peerman should have got a shot as a WR
Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?
To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Shipley will replace Caldwell next year...
Tate more than likely will have to compete with Hawkins for the no. 4 receiver job and that’s assuming Whalen doesn’t break out and show he can contribute as well. The only way I see Tate getting on the field as a receiver is if they pull a New England Patriots move and run a bunch of 5 receiver sets and with our run-first style of play, I don’t see that happening this season and maybe not for a while, not until Dalton becomes more prolific as a passer anyways.
