Greetings from BCC: Ask a Jags fan

Hello there Bengal fans this tiquanunderwear from the Jacksonville Jaguars SB Nation blog Big Cat Country.  As we look forward to the Sunday matchup you can use this thread to ask questions and I along with other BCC members will stop by and answer them to the best of our knowledge.  I for one was born in Cincinnati (Loveland, OH) but moved at a very young age.  After settling in Duval County I found the Jaguars and have been hooked since.

I will leave with three questions for you folks.

1) Andy Dalton didn't have the hype of Newton or Gabbert, but is performing at a high level.  How do you think he has done so far?

2) AJ Green came in with tons of hype. How has he preformed?

3) You have the #1 defense, do you think the D can stay at the top of the NFL throughout the year.

Thanks!

to answer your questions

1. Dalton has performed far better than I expected. He has shown poise, determination, and great leadership. Some people here still aren’t on the Dalton bandwagon, but I’m fully aboard along with the majority of the other people.here.
2. Aj is as advertised, makes a couple amazing catches a game and gets around 100 yards almost every game.
3. Probably not number one, but most people here think this is a top 5 defense. They will give up some plays though and is not always 100% consistant.

by JCompton41 on Oct 4, 2011 1:12 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

My opinion

1. Andy has really impressed so far. I don’t think there is a rookie not named Came Newton who has been more surprising.

2. AJ Green is a beast, and was obviously the best WR in the draft.

3. We haven’t really played anyone so I think the #1 ranking is a bit of a farce. I think we have a top 10 D though.

(#3) I wouldn't say that we haven't played anyone

We just held the league’s topped ranked offense to 13 points and under 300 yards. But I agree that this is probably not the best defense in the league. Probably somewhere in the 5-8 range. Baltimore, Washington, & Tennessee should probably be ranked ahead of them at this point, and I’d lump them in somewhere with Houston, Pitt, San Diego & San Fran

JAGS get snuffed on your list huh? I'm used to it....But we Just held the saints to 23 points..

They have been blowing up the scoreboard… The JETS would never get 32 points on us again if they tried….That was Luke McCowns fault not the D…

Our defense is pretty good… Offense…eh…

Honestly, I don't know a whole lot about your team,

So going by statistical evidence, the Jags don’t rank in the top ten in any major category except for points allowed (they rank 10th). If you can make a case of why I should include them, I’m all ears, but I don’t see much on the surface that would make me put them there.

by Paul Cannon on Oct 4, 2011 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont know much either about them

But I do like there interior line players, don’t know how well they’ve performed this year.

by JCompton41 on Oct 5, 2011 10:01 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

For starters

Points allowed is generally the most important defensive statistic, in my opinion. Of course, there are exceptions like when the Jaguars allowed 32 points to the Jets due to bad special teams play and four offensive interceptions. Outside of that game, every team we played thus far has put up their fewest number of points against Jacksonville.

by Mahlalie on Oct 5, 2011 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that points allowed is the most important stat,

but even that category puts them on the Bubble. I’ll definitely give you that they are good, and they should be considered a respectable unit (maybe top 10), but you still haven’t made a case of why you should be included above the other teams I mentioned.

by Paul Cannon on Oct 5, 2011 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

For what it's worth

Houston allowed the Saints to score 40. We allowed 23. Tennessee put up 26 on Baltimore while managing only 14 against us, and, honestly, half of those points was on a fluke play. I don’t know that I’d rank our defense as good as Baltimore, but I’d say we may have the best defense our division.

I realize Houston and Tennessee rank above us in points allowed, but Tennessee played Denver, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Jacksonville. Houston played Indy, Miami, New Orleans, and Pittsburgh. With exception of New Orleans and, probably, Baltimore, none of those teams have particularly stellar offenses so far this season.

We played Tennessee, Carolina, and New Orleans, all of which have been able to move the ball effectively. Even the Jets haven’t been that bad, and, as I mentioned before. Our defense was pretty good in that game. It was inept offense and poor special teams play that are responsible for all those points allowed in that game.

by Mahlalie on Oct 5, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright. Case made.

Let’s just agree that this will probably be a low scoring game. haha

by Paul Cannon on Oct 5, 2011 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I like low-scoring games.

I think 20 points could win this. Of course, games that everyone expects to be low-scoring often end up being quite the opposite. Here’s to a low-scoring affair, though.

by Mahlalie on Oct 5, 2011 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

To be clear

I don’t know how comfortable I am calling Jacksonville top ten, but I think they’re better than people think. I’m convinced they’re better than Houston as well.

by Mahlalie on Oct 5, 2011 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

With Baltimore, not so sure about Skins and Titans, we have the potential to be better than them both and better than ‘09. Can’t compare with Baltimore, though. They’re simply amazing. 2 sure Hall of Famers and Haloti Ngata, we’re just not as good. I’m hoping for #2 or #3 by the end of season. Sounds achievable.

by cincyplayoffwin2012 on Oct 4, 2011 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I really think we're better than Baltimore.

They have Reed, Lewis, and Ngata but we seem to be consistently good across the board while they can’t really seem to say the same. Our corners are better and our DLine overall is better.

by Doc Scratch on Oct 5, 2011 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

All I know about this defensive nonsense

is that you have to take into account how many drives our defense sees a game. Against San Francisco they were out there all day. Same thing in teh first half against Buffalo. Same thing in the 3rd quarter against Cleveland. Same thing for the first half of the Broncos game.

The D’s overall stats are pretty amazing considering the offense has given them such little help.

Change gone come mane! Trust me! Cause i Bleed tigerblood!--Jerome Simpson

by Grizzlyfox on Oct 5, 2011 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

They have three HoFers.

But the rest of their defense outside of like Jarret Johnson and Mt. Cody don’t really seem worth mentioning as fantastic. Clements is upgradeable but the rest of our starters and our depth outside the secondary are consistently good. Didn’t we learn this past offseason that a full team is better than a group of a few stars?

by Doc Scratch on Oct 5, 2011 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes we did Doc. Don't misunderstand, I really like the entire Bengals team

They are solid, if not stellar, in every position group. Rivers, who for some reason everyone seems to be mum about, is also solid and will be an upgrade. Bobby, who everyone seems down on, should be an upgrade at RG, especially in the running game.

It is entirely possible that I got a wrong impression when I watched the Sun. night game, but they were all over the Jets O. Their D depends on disruption at the point of attack and IF we can keep Dalton clean I really like our chances, especially late in the game as I don’t think they can rotate fresh bodies in and out like we can. It is still early and the injury factor is also a big consideration. But, lets not get ahead of ourselves. We need to get thru to last four games in a position to do something. It all depends on how much we can advance as a team by then. We are only 2 & 2 and there is a lot of football to be played.. The team appears to be better than we expected but we still have a lot of work to do if we expect to survive a very difficult second half of the season.

no, you are correct about the Ravens vs Jets

The Ravens were nothing short of impressive with their defense. Our unit is very, very good, but they showed how to go to the next level and create a turnover machine and score points. Not many teams can do that. The mid 80’s Giants Defense comes to mind.

First your questions:

1) Dalton has performed well, I would say. He seems to have trouble getting started but once he gets the flow of the game down he looks very good. The second half this week against the Bill was when he looked best, IMHO.

2) No regrets on Green. He’s a lil’ rough, but I’d have to say that he he is the best skill player right now on the offensive side of the ball, with Gresham being his only competition for that distinction. (Whitworth being the best player on this team, period)

3) Not sure if they can remain the top defense, but the high ranking is not illusory. The defensive linemen and linebackers are outstanding; with Moch and (possibly) Rivers coming back soon, there are possible upgrades in the pipe as well.

Now for a couple of questions:

1) Do you expect the Jags to heavily favor the run Sunday? Considering that our strength is the front seven, if so how do you expect MJD to fare?

2) Thoughts on Gabbert? Is he ready for you guys to open up the offense a little more so everyone doesn’t stack up on MJD every play? What are the chances of him having a big game against us?

3) How’s your defense? Just looking at their stats they are roughly in 10-12 category… what are the strengths and failings of the Jags defense?

by Boomer Lion on Oct 4, 2011 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

1) MJD only had 11 carries against NO…I’d expect about 18-22 this game
2) He can make all the throws but has some trouble with happy feet in the pocket…He will be very good
3) Our defense is solid and has playmakers all over the field….Poz leads the Run D…Although we are susceptible to a few big plays

by palewook on Oct 5, 2011 6:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought Gabbert

held up well considering I read Gregg Williams say that he blitzed Gabbert as much as any quarterback he’s been up against. He was really bad about getting happy feet in the preseason, but he’s dramatically improved in that area. He was a bit inaccurate, especially in the second half, and you may be able to attribute that to pressure. I think much of it is timing with the receivers, though, however much of a cop-out that sounds like.

The offensive line has been okay. Nothing stellar, but there hasn’t been a lot of continuity due to injuries. They gave up three sacks to the Saints with three changed pieces on the O-line from the previous week.

The secondary is decent, certainly a drastic improvement over last year. We’ve been playing more than I’d like without our CB2, but they are okay with the help of an improved pass rush. I know the pass rush doesn’t look that good on paper, but Newton was harassed all day and Brees was sacked three times.

The Saints scored TDs 2/5 in the redzone. Take that how you want.

answering the 3 questions you put out there

1) can’t recall the last time any cincy fan called for the qb who shall not be named to be called back. everyone is rather happy with dalton’s heart and glad to have a qb with leadership ability. damned nice to finally have a qb with poise in cincy again.

2) green makes the ending of the ocho era bearable for those of us that loved chad. green appears to have a hellva career ahead of him.

3) our defense. believe its a paper tiger, listen to the national media outlets =) hope the jags have one of the better o-lines in the nfl, because whats coming sunday will be an eye opener if you’ve been following the national press about cincy. are we a number 1 d? nope. are are top 5. maybe. is the d-line for real? hell yes. if you want to beat the d, throw at your TEs and expose our secondary. challenge our d-line and its going to be a long day for jag fans.

You are exactly right on point #3

If the Jags decide to run it up the middle or off tackle I don’t think that will be a good look for them, even before we put 8 in the box.

by Boomer Lion on Oct 4, 2011 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Best shot against the Bengals D

is to spread the ball around. Howard is a very good cover LB, but Maualuga and Lawson are both prone to mental lapses.

In the secondary Hall is awesome, and Nelson is a pretty solid playmaker (despite what you may remember of him) but otherwise they’re suspect.

The defensive line doesn’t have any superstars (though Dunlap could be soon) but there are 8 guys that can all light up someone in the backfield and you can pretty much count on at least 5 of them doing it each game. The rotation of so many high-motor playmakers on the d-line, combined with excellent tackling, is what makes this defense so good.

by indesignkat on Oct 4, 2011 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

True that,

Nelson seems to have upped his game here in Cincy

Good Qs Jags man

1. Dalton looks solid. Deep ball is a little suspect, but with AJ out there he can afford to be off target sometimes. Seems to do well in short-medium throws and has some mobility which is nice (unlike Palmer). havent seen a lot of success working deep-sideline routes, but those are hard no matter who you are. Seems like he really does well working the middle of the field with Gresham and the WRs and then throwing up a bomb once in a while to Green or Simpson

2. AJ is the truth. Speed, size, hands. Easily worth the #4 pick. Very happy to watch him for a long time. Could easily get 1000 yards as a rookie

3. Defense is legit. We dont get run on very easily but our secondary will give up some plays if you have the guts to attack them enough. Im guessing we end up as a top-7 unit by end of season. maybe even top-3
-———————————————

My Qs for the Jags

1. Who are your top recievers? Deep threats? Is Mercedes Lewis alive?

2./ Who are the defensive playmakers to look out for on Sunday?

Hi fans it Brandon Roy.
And ME.....LaMarcus Aldridge

by Derftron on Oct 4, 2011 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

1) Our WR’s are not good.. Mike Thomas is
the best but we have virtually no deep threat… Marcedes is alive Gabbert just has to find him more
2) Posluszny is a big run stopper at MLB and Daryl Smith another LB had a pick against NO..the secondary is also improved

if the jags don't target macedes this week

all of the jags fans need to publicly flog the jags coaching staff. Marcedes Lewis should be weapon number #1 on sunday for the jags and could post season best numbers. send lewis right at manny lawson nonstop until we have to send safety help. target nate a couple of times, then spend rest of day beating on manny lawson. lewis will have 120-150 yards before game is over. jags win.

do i think that will happen? hopefully not. would it be the easiest way to beat cincy, yes.

by Oregonbengalsfan on Oct 7, 2011 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

He still runs over people

on a regular basis. There are times when he really strikes me as a bowling ball, running into a mess of players and knocking them four yards down field. He’s also still good in pass protection, although I know he was responsible for a sack last week. But allowing sacks is another matter. He’s still got it. He just hasn’t made highlight reels recently by blowing up someone of Merriman’s stature.

by Mahlalie on Oct 7, 2011 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I expect the Bengals

to hold him near his only other performance against the Bengals D (10 for 33), who imo, is much better than the 2008 unit, although I expect him to get more than 10 carries, so probably more yards.

by Oregonbengalsfan on Oct 7, 2011 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you're setting your sights a little high.

That was the worst team we’ve had record-wise since 2003, and I think that ‘03 team had more talent. MJD wasn’t the starting RB that year, and we were playing from behind the whole game. I think it’s commonly accepted that runners play better the more they run, although 11 runs last week was good for 84 yards.

by Mahlalie on Oct 7, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I know your defense is very good.

I wasn’t trying to say it’s overrated. I just think MJD is that good. I don’t think 4-5 ypc is out of the question at all.

by Mahlalie on Oct 8, 2011 5:14 AM EDT up reply actions

We've been holding some damn good RBs that are in the top ten to under

(in Hillis’ case, well under) 4 YPC. MJD is good but there’s no way he’s getting a 5 YPC average.

by Doc Scratch on Oct 8, 2011 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Hillis has had

one pretty good game this year. He had a pretty good ypc against TN but rushed only ten times. His only good game yardage-wise was against Indy, and I don’t know if you noticed but Indy’s defense is really not that good. Honestly, Jackson is the only one I find impressive. Fred Jackson’s game is why I would say your run defense is legit. Still, he poster 3.9 ypc, and MJD is definitely better than Jackson in my book.

by Mahlalie on Oct 8, 2011 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

i say he will top out around the same, unless he busts a big run.

This d won’t get chipped away at for 5 yards a pop. But a big play is possible that inflated his average.

by JCompton41 on Oct 8, 2011 1:45 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That's why it's called an average

Of course, I don’t expect five yards every rush, but he has a knack for breaking off big runs from time to time.

by Mahlalie on Oct 8, 2011 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant no disrespect to MJD

‘cause he’s clearly one of the top backs in the league, but we’ve got to have some kind of statute of limitations on highlight clips. I could show you some awesome videos of Chad Ochocinco from 2007, but it doesn’t mean that he’s the same player that he was.

Again, no disprespect to MJD was intended.

by Paul Cannon on Oct 8, 2011 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I get what you're saying, but

Ochocinco is at the back end of his career while he was in his prime in ‘07. MJD is in the prime of his career now while he was at the beginning of his career in ’07. He’s better now than he was then.

Until the defense starts forcing some turnovers, I don’t think that we should consider them as the #1 D in the league (and I’m pretty sure that they don’t consider themselves the #1 D in the league). However, they do a great job of tackling and usually keep the offense in front of them.

my thoughts

1 – Too soon to tell on Dalton. He has looked amazing and horrible depending on the drive. After the first 3 games I was riding pretty high on him, but he was so wildly inaccurate in the first half against Buffalo that I’m not completely solid in my belief anymore. Time will tell. Hard to gauge so far because the receivers are sorta wildcards too. Gresham and Green have both made some great plays and also some bonehead mistakes. The rest are all pretty much nobodies now that Shipley is hurt.

2 – Green is an amazing specimen who has made some unreal catches. He’s also had at least 3 false starts in 4 games and has had some bad drops. He’s going to get better, and that should scare the pants off everyone.

3 – In a word, no. The defense is outstanding, has been for 3 years and getting better all the time, but the offense can’t keep drives going. The sooner the offense gains some consistency the more likely the defense holds onto its high ranking. It could happen, but I’m not terribly optimistic. My faith in the defense is near-total, but they need the offense to give them some rest.

Do Jags fan get upset when they are called a Jag?

Do you have regular Jag-offs in the parking lot, or other locations?

Is the local bar called the Jag Hole?

Do you understand that I’m doing this razzing with the best intentions between fans? I am looking forward to the game. I think both teams have some seams for the other to exploit, and we might see some excellent football.

How much faith do you think the coaches have in Gabbert

I’m only asking because i wanna try to gauge how many times Pocket Hercules will get the ball. I’m sure you guys have the same general game plan as we do, ride the star rb, but how long until that plan gets scrapped for give the rookie some tosses?

if MJD doesn’t get 25+ carries something was wrong with the game plan. 10+ target passes to TE and 20+ runs by MJD. any other game plan is poorly designed vs the bengals defense.

I’m just asking how well they can make adjustments. Do they have a competent O.C., or is a more of a Bratkowski type of guy…..

I'm interested in knowing what Jags fans think of Reggie Nelson

Was hyped big time coming out of Florida, but flopped in Jacksonville. He’s someone turned it around now, but teh jury is still out IMO.

We wanted him to do good so bad! At least the Gator fans did being the University of Florida is only about 45 mins from JAX.

This is Gator country… When he flopped we all were more than happy to see him go.. Unfortunatly
the guy we got for him sucked even worse (David Jones) ugh..

Glad to hear he is doing better…

He seems to get lost occasionally in coverage

But he is really good in run support.

a few picks this year and he should get some probowl consideration

He’s usually got pretty good coverage, just doesn’t catch the ball. And he is great in run support.

david jones was horrible

I was telling a friend about the trade, and said you’d never hear David Jones’s name again until he’s cut. And I’m pretty sure he’s been cut right?

In Jacksonville he was the worst player on the team…..Instead of tackling he always tried to force fumbles…never worked

How is your team built?

Offensively and defensively. What styles of offense do you run, what are your strengths, what’s your base defense, etc.

I know absolutely nothing about the Jags.

Here we go

Offensively we had been pounding the ball to MJD, but now with Gabbert we have opened it up and started to sling the rock
Defense is a strong point, we run a 4-3 but have playmakers all over the field

Our D-Line was the strength by far coming out of the gate... But our 1st round DT Tyson AluAlu has been nursing and injured knee and is not playing well.. He has no explosivenss..

Guy was blowing through double teams in the pre season and game 1 but now he is playing hurt..Again… I don’t expect him to finish the season..

Jacksonville Jaguars: Rookie left guard Will Rackley is bringing up the rear in Pass Blocking Efficiency for guards. He has allowed three sacks, a hit, and six pressures in 102 pass-blocking snaps. Making matters worse, center Brad Meester ranks second from the bottom among centers.

I have a question, why has Marvin Lewis been coaching for so long with a W/L record of less that .500? Does the Bengals owner have a lot of patience or what?

by Oregonbengalsfan on Oct 6, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

marvin has been the best coach of mike brown era

He gets a pass because he has to deal with mike brown. Brown seems to trust him with more and more personell choices recently so he’s the only reason the bengals aren’t back to the 90s bengals imo.

by JCompton41 on Oct 6, 2011 2:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

several factors

mike brown can be loyal to a fault
also marvin has been hit and miss the past decade. he has made the playoffs twice while having to deal with mike brown. as a whole the franchise might be afraid at the possibility of reverting back to losing ways without marvin

by JCompton41 on Oct 6, 2011 3:03 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

If they can’t score more than 10 on a rather average defense like the Saints, I definitely don’t see them putting 20+ on a better one like ours.

Unless the entire scoring is D/ST.

by FriarBob on Oct 6, 2011 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I expect the offense to improve

as the rookie QB improves. Hopefully, there’s enough improvement this week, but it may take a bit of time. We did put up 16 against Tennessee. I don’t if that means anything, but I thought I’d throw it out there.

by Mahlalie on Oct 7, 2011 2:21 AM EDT up reply actions

So you think you'll get an extra touchdown against us?

He’s a rookie facing one of the best defenses in the league. You might want to re-evaluate your assurance.

by Doc Scratch on Oct 7, 2011 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You're putting words in my mouth.

I think he’ll improve week to week. I don’t know if he’ll be improved enough to score a pair of TDs against a very good defense this week. I hope he will, and most estimations of the Jags outscoring their average are based on the notion that he will improve enough for the offense to score an extra TD. He’s made some eye-popping throws along with some rookie mistakes. If he makes those great throws at the right times, even a good D would be hard pressed to stop it.

by Mahlalie on Oct 8, 2011 5:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Question

Other than MJD, where do you see your offensive philosophy going w/Gabbert under center? Lots of short passes, screens etc?

Is it True the Mike Thomas is your only reciever w/ over 100 yds on the year?!

It's a mixture

of our receivers not being that good and the fact that we ran the ball roughly a gazillion times in two of our four games. Inconsistent to outright poor QB play hasn’t helped, either.
