AJ Greens Season so far

During the game I made the comment I can't remember a receiving having a better rookie season as AJ Green has had so far. It was quickly, and wisely, pointed out that Randy Moss was a beast as a Rookie. After the game, I went ahead and pulled some stats to compare AJ Green and Randy Moss. The comparison I'm making will be through the first 4 games and also another through the first 5 games.

The numbers show that AJ Green is playing as well as Randy Moss through the first 4 and 5 games of the season. The only area that Randy Moss has a clear advantage in is TD receptions. In all other area's it's fairly close, with AJ Green winning most of those categories. Not shown, is that Randy Moss did have a 190 yard receiving game in his 5th game of the year, which would be the most receiving yards in a game between these two.

I should also add that AJ Green is working on a strike shortened off-season, with a Rookie QB, and a rookie Offensive Coordinator. During Randy Moss rookie season the Vikings were clearly a pass first team, where theBengals are a run first team(or atleast a balanced team). Randy Moss also received favorable matchups because he had a Hall of Fame Receiver starting opposite of him in Cris Carter.

In closing, Randy Moss was one of the most physically gifted athletes to ever enter the NFL. If AJ Green can come even close to the career numbers that Moss put up, we have one hell of a receiver in AJ Green. I'm definitely not going to say AJ Green is, or will be, a better receiver than Randy Moss. At this point in his very young career he matches up very favorably to one of the greatest receivers to ever play the game.

Not a fair comparison because of Green playing with a rookie QB who only had training to try and jell.

I think Moss played with Cunningham his rookie year Randall might be in the HOF someday.

Agree and I mention that in the post above.

Moss also had a HOF receiver starting opposite to him(Cris Carter) and was in a much more pass first offense. Just more reasons why AJ’s start is that much more impressive!

AJ is the real deal.

It’s absurd how effective he continues to be seeing as our # 2/3 can’t seem to get open. Missing Shipley badly right now.

Definitely the real deal.

Randy may have had more physical talent, but AJ seems to have a better grasp of what it takes to be a team player and to be successful.

Yeah, think Moss minus the diva

Our 2 and 3 get open a lot.

As much as a I like Shipley, Caldwell is not a big downgrade in the slot.

hands

he has none.

That drop he had when he was hit, we were lucky it wasn’t called a fumble. He had two feet down.

Sorry but I have to agree here with Supergrover

Caldwell is a significant drop off from Shipley simply because of his hands. Shipley will catch almost anything thrown his way, where as Caldwell has routinely dropped a lot of catchable balls.

He nearly had another touchdown on that 3rd and something long

where he just missed grabbing it over his head.

Glad he didn’t catch the one that went to gresham (Green was more open), because I think he had gone out the back of the end zone. (I think the ref even had his hat off to signal it)

To play devil's advocate....

With Chris Carter opposite Randy Moss, he got less targets. It is hard to tell if Green or Gresham is the main man when it comes to targets.

Bottom line…AJ Green is very good. Randy Moss is one of the all time best. Almost unguardable on the deep ball. I really don’t care who had a better rookie campaign. What is important is that Green continue to improve, perform and help the Bengals win.

Not sure I agree with you about Moss getting less targets

If you remember, the Vikings that year were a very pass happy team and aired it out A LOT.

The Bengals are mainly a run first team, or atleast balanced. Since the Vikings would have thrown the ball more that year, Moss had more opportunities to make plays in the passing game.

In the end though, your right and it doesn’t really matter, but what else do we do around here but discuss these types of things. We could say, “I really don’t care who had a better year” about 60% of the articles around here, but that’s what we do ;)

moss/green

moss was a beast… he just didnt play hard every game otherwise he would have like all the wr recs…. also i think cover 2 was made for moss because he was a one on one nightmare

— green is lookin legit… he plays hard and is low key… i just want to see how he matches up with revis

by JulianK on Oct 10, 2011 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

he had revis alerady

go back to the preseason game. Revis couldnt check him, he turned Revis around. It was a rainny day and AJ dropped a few balls but Revis was beat on most of the plays.

eh, don't put too much stock into that.

Preseason Revis and regular season Revis are different players.

Moss was a beast

One area that AJ seems to clearly be better than Moss, is his work ethic, attitude, and putting team and winning first. Those obviously can’t be measured by a stat, but hopefully they will turn AJ into an even better player over the next few years as he matches his physical talent with the mental aspect of the game. If AJ works to become a great route runner, he could become simply great!

by C1ncy4Life on Oct 10, 2011 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Others may have seen the article about AJ, but heres a quick re-cap AJ lost a loved one (brother or cousin)

AJ lost a loved one (brother or cousin, not sure which)at a very young age in a car crash. He was in the car as well and was the only one who walked away w/scratches and bruises, basically unharmed. Since that point in his life he’s thought God had a plan for him and that he’s earned his opportunities through hard work and the lord’s blessings. He learned to not take things for granted and to make the most out of what you have. Basically the complete opposite of Moss’ mindset, with a refreshing humble attitude and grinder work ethic

One other category I give Green the edge on is..........

the mental aspect. Green seems to be a very well grounded guy with a team first mentality. Moss was just, not any of the above.

by The Van Buren Boys on Oct 10, 2011 9:22 AM EDT reply actions

Very much agree

I didn’t include it in the original article but have mentioned it in the comments below.

Green is very much a more team player and seems willing to do the small things it takes to win a game.

by C1ncy4Life on Oct 10, 2011 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Green is great

And it certainly looks like the Bengals nailed another draft pick (which they have done for about 4 years running now. Who knew???) But I gotta give the edge to Moss. TD wise he was a beast, and I tend to give recievers in that era the edge whent he stats are close. DBs were allowed to be WAY more physical 10 years ago than they are now. It is a much more pass friendly league now.

that said, AJ getting it done with a rookie QB and little time to prepare is damn impressive and I have called him Randy Moss Jr many many times already this year

Hi fans it Brandon Roy.
