Thursday Night Football Open Thread

OAKLAND, CA - NOVEMBER 06: Elvis Dumervil #92 and Jason Hunter #52 of the Denver Broncos sack Carson Palmer #3 of the Oakland Raiders at O.co Coliseum on November 6, 2011 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

The Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers face off tonight on the NFL Network for the first Thursday Night Football game of the year. It gives Bengals fans an opportunity to watch Carson Palmer in a prime time NFL game. Since he joined the Oakland Raiders, Carson has played in two games against the Kansas City Chiefs (2nd half only) and the Denver Broncos.

The Raiders have lost both games by a combined score of 66 to 24. In those games Carson has thrown for three touchdowns and six interceptions for a QB rating of 53.9. Carson is not producing and the Raiders have dropped two straight leading Head Coach Hue Jackson to address claims that there are problems in the locker-room. So far, Mike Brown and the Bengals seem to have gotten the better end of the trade.

Another note of interest for Bengals fans is T.J. Houshmandzadeh who signed with the Raiders during the bye week. He managed one reception for 28 yards against the Broncos last week. Chinedum Ndukwe was just cut so we will not get to see him in action tonight.

Who should Bengals fans root for if anyone? The San Diego Chargers or the Cincinnati West Oakland Raiders

Chargers starting out good

Oakland going to tank the season and then everyone will see that Carson isn’t who they thought.

Over/Under on 1.5 picks by Palmer???

Two things...

I don’t really have a choice. I’m sorta stuck with what my parents do. Also, I really don’t watch NFL Network enough for that to be a dealbreaker. Other than the couple games they show per year, I’d never even turn on NFL Network.

We have Direct TV at another house in Tennessee, and I personally find the satellite to sort of be a pain in the ass.

by sexsalad on Nov 10, 2011 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

I thought Sunday Ticket was something that can be added.

It comes with NFL Network? Damn, maybe NFL Network is better than I thought.

Even then, though, I’m usually content with whatever game is on for the time slot where the Bengals aren’t playing. If I lived out of the town and couldn’t get the Bengals game Sunday Ticket would be essential, but since I live in Cincy and can get all the games I’m happy.

by sexsalad on Nov 10, 2011 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think Sunday Ticket is extra

You can always find the NFL Network online 24/7 anyway :)

I love NFL network

NFL Sunday highlights is way better than sportscenter for catching highlights and decent analysis from the games for the day….IMO.

NFL Network is AWESOME!!

It’s definitely my favorite channel.

wow Chargers look soft and confused

Prediction: Carson does great until the end of the 3rd where he throws a pick 6 and blows the game….being unable to comeback in the fourth quarter………

by ticalcaldwell on Nov 10, 2011 9:14 PM EST reply actions

Ugh

The Chargers look horrible. So strange to think that one or two wins from anther team could change te shape of te Bengals for the next 10 years.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 9:28 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Ha

The funniest part is that big throw to Ford should have been a TD but Carson under threw it and now it looks like Ford might be out for a while. Nice work CP.

go chargers

I want the raiders to lose all their games so we get a high first round pick

by Hoke Hogan on Nov 10, 2011 9:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Have the Chargers had a first down yet?

Maybe they had one on their first drive but this is ridiculous.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 9:41 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Hue is doing a great job dialing up plays.

Playing field possession well. Not putting Carson in bad situations. Letting him throw routes he enjoys. It’s clear the Raiders are the more “put together” team tonight.

Trent Richardson, we barely knew you...

Garbage QB who has coasted on raw arm strength for years. I’m so happy Eli has put that debate to bed for good finally.

whats happening,

Im listening to the game on the radio and they are making it sound like carson is lighting it up out there?

by TheVilified on Nov 10, 2011 9:53 PM EST reply actions

He doesn't look awful

Three really good throws…though one was under thrown and ended up getting Jacoby Ford injured on a 40 yard reception. They’re pounding the run.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 9:56 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

He's 8-10 for a near perfect passer rating

He is getting good protection, so that’s giving him a time to throw down field. He had a pretty obvious UNDERthrow to a wide open Jacoby Ford (which actually led to Ford injuring his ankle when he had to pivot to wait for the ball). Also, one of his long passes was all thanks to Denarious Moore -he made a ridiculous fingertip catch!!!

by The_Black_Stripes on Nov 10, 2011 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

ahh, ok, them just running well

at least makes some sense to me lol. Man, I really want a decent pick from them .

by TheVilified on Nov 10, 2011 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

They are running the ball extremely well

Carson’s always done better behind a great ground game and speedy receivers. This is the formula I think Hue envisioned.

It’s only 1 half and even if it continues it’s only 1 game so we’ll see.

Even if he does good we still robbed the Raiders.

by C1ncy4Life on Nov 10, 2011 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

Why

Couldn’t we have played the chargers this year?

by SCbengalsfan on Nov 10, 2011 9:54 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Chargers O Line is freaking terrible.......

this offense is a joke. Glad I don’t have V Jack or Rivers on my fantasy team. They’ll come back in the 2nd half and make it interesting though…….

by The Van Buren Boys on Nov 10, 2011 9:57 PM EST reply actions

I'm sure ts partly because I dot know this team that well...

But it’s shocking how much less faith I have in the Chargers coming back in the second half than I would in this years Bengals in the same situation. Our guys really do have a lot of intangibles that you don’t see in many teams.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 10:05 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Fake Punt intentional

It was incomplete because Jammer almost tackled the receiver. They wanted pass intereference but there is NO pass Interference out of a Punt Formation.

by C1ncy4Life on Nov 10, 2011 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

Carson is tearing up the Chargers...

Just like he did 11 months ago in Cincy. Remember that game? That was the only glimmer of hope this team showed me last year. We were playing for pride, but it was somewhat awesome to knock out the number one offensive and defensive team out of the playoffs the day after Christmas. It may not have had that much meaning, but I’ll never forget that game. Carson looked almost exactly like he did in 05-06.

For the sake of our future draft picks, I hope he plays the second half like he did the first 13 games of last year.

by cincyplayoffwin2012 on Nov 10, 2011 10:07 PM EST reply actions

Finally making some adjustments on offense

Not sure why Norv Turner thought he could keep putting Rivers in 7 step drops behind that line. Looks like a Gruden offense all of sudden.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 10:12 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Here we go

Now it’s time for a Palmer pick 6.

by C1ncy4Life on Nov 10, 2011 10:15 PM EST reply actions

That was a sick TD catch...

But why would you EVER make that throw? That had a 70% chance of being an INT.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 10:15 PM EST via mobile reply actions

This game becomes a barn burner in the second half.

Neither team can play D. Rivers just has to go downfield w/ it and take chances. That line is beat to hell.

Nothing wrong with Carson's arm

Still, wait until he plays a defense that can pressure him

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 10:22 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He could always make the deep, floating throws

It’s just that he had lost the zip on a lot of his medium/short passes, leading to a bunch of picks/pick-6’s.

personally, i would like to beat the raiders in the AFC championship

of course this would be a perfect case scenario, if we beat the raiders in the afc champions ship, we would get a 1st found pick 2013. So techniqually we want the raiders do good until the afc championship and then suck ass next year… get it?

Actually I'd rather have them lose every game for the next two years

Give us a top 10 pick this year an the 33rd pick next year instead of the 30th or so. If they do really well and go to the playoffs there’s still no guarantee they make the championship.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 11:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I still want te higher pick in the year we're guaranteed a first rounder

This year. They have a tough schedule and could give us a too 10 pick. Any other scenario has us picking towards the end of the round or worse in te back half of the 2nd next year. I’m squarely anti-Raiders at least for the rest of this season.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 11:16 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

If they lose tonight

They have a decent shot at going 7-9 or maybe 6-10. Their schedule is rough. 7 wins might make a top 10. 6 wins definitely does. It’s wishful thinking, but not implausible. Have to admit Carson’s performance tonight makes me a little uneasy. He showed some stuff left in the tank.

Norv Turner should be fired tomorrow

I don’t even know who their OC is but this has been the worst called offensive game I’ve seen in years. Did someone tell The Charees they had John Eleaybplayig QB for them? Stupid stupid high risk throws all night behind a horrible O line. Begging for an INTvlike that.

The Raiders running game has really set up their passing game.

Bush is dominating, and CP has had fairly good protection to be able to throw downfield.

But Bush is dominating, as Carson has only had to throw 21 times.

The positive is that we still have 2 first round picks

Just changes the conversation. Richardson, Claiborne, Blackmon, Kirkpatrick are all probably off the table unless you want to package both first rounders for one of them, and that’s probably not worth it for any of them. So now I’m looking at DeCastro, BPA, and a possible trade to the top of the 2nd for a RB.

by eric nyc on Nov 10, 2011 11:46 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Carson was good against an average Defense at best...

In all honesty, Michael Bush made everything possible tonight. All he did was throw some good deep balls. That’s what Carson does. They guy has a pretty deep ball and that’s it. Did anybody else see him skip three five yard hooks tonight? I did. I like Carson, but he isn’t a franshise QB anymore. Four of his passes would’ve been picked in the AFCN tonight. Whether it was against us, or anybody else.

by whodeycommish14 on Nov 11, 2011 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

He did do a good job...

with what he needed to do. Manage the game and use play-action deep ball. THAT’S WHAT HE’S THERE FOR!!!

by whodeycommish14 on Nov 11, 2011 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

Carson actually looked a little bit like the Carson of 2005 tonight.

He was making good decisions, spreading the ball around, the passing game didn’t suffer all that much once Jacoby Ford got hurt and he was using the screen well with Michael Bush. The only bad throw he had was the INT where he got hit as he threw because of a missed block by Bush. But considering I have him on my fantasy team I was happy with his performance tonight and he still has good touch on those deep throws which is something he’s never really lost over the years as opposed to all his other skill sets that have deteriorated.

by dstacify on Nov 11, 2011 12:36 AM EST reply actions

SD had no kind of consistent pressure on him

He had a good pocket all night. I don’t think any of us ever doubted his long ball ability. I’d like to see him against a good pass rush and having to make quick decisions.

Bottom line is that Carson is still a pretty damn good QB. Most of us acknowledged that last year, but understood he couldn’t do it here. We needed an attitude change in the locker room. That being said, I’d take Dalton over Palmer right now in a heartbeat on any roster in the NFL.

by eric nyc on Nov 11, 2011 12:47 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Carson was good for a while here...

there was no doubt about that. But it ran its course. An interesting question to ask would be would you rather have Dalton the way he’s playing now or the Palmer from 2005 that we all loved before he got hurt.

by dstacify on Nov 11, 2011 12:54 AM EST up reply actions

That's not even a question

Pre-injury 2005 Palmer was the next Peyton Manning. We were winning the SB in 2005. Pittsburgh was an inferior team.

But Dalton has the potential to be a Drew Brees-type player. Carson never had the attitude.

by eric nyc on Nov 11, 2011 1:01 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Keep in mind also...

that Palmer was having all kinds of success that season before the injury in spite of Bratkowski being there while Dalton has much better O-coordinator in Jay Gruden although I think the unsung hero in Dalton’s development could also be our QBs coach, Ken Zampese, who did a good job with Palmer before he got hurt. But I think Palmer deserves more credit than we’re giving him, in spite of the way he left things here because in his prime before all the injuries he was an elite QB who was able to have success despite Bratkowski’s mediocre play-calling, which was immediately exposed in the playoff game against the Steelers after Carson went down and Kitna came in.

by dstacify on Nov 11, 2011 1:11 AM EST up reply actions

I'm just saying from a raw skillset perspective it isn't close.

Palmer out of USC was a once in a generation talent. Those physical skills got degraded by the injuries and that exposed his lack of mental toughness, which I think Dalton has over 2003, 2004, or 2005 Palmer in spades. But if you took a perfectly healthy 24 year old Carson Palmer out of the draft again right now, he’d be Andrew Luck type gold the same way he was when we drafted him. Bad luck all around. Also, it didn’t help that he got drafted into a team with Chad and Housh (I maintain, without any real proof, that TJ was as negative of a locker room influence as anyone else on those teams. I never liked Housh’s attitude.)

by eric nyc on Nov 11, 2011 1:37 AM EST up reply actions

Carson played well tonight

But I wouldn’t read too much into it b/c the Raiders still have a pretty tough schedule foe some reason Carson always plays well against Chargers.
