Around SBN: Following UFC 146 Loss, Jason 'Mayhem' Miller 'Done' in UFC

The Blame Game

Everyone please take it easy. I know its easy after a tough loss to point fingers, but the fact remains, there are 7 games left and we need to go at least 4-3 to make the playoffs.

I understand the loss against the steelers was tough, especially when you know we could have won the game. But look at it this way. If we beat Baltimore next week, we will be back in first place of the division. We will have the advantage over the steelers because our division record will be 2-1 and the steelers will be 1-1 still. The road to the playoffs is still in our control!

I think the most impressive part in the game against the steelers, we had 5 sacks with our best D lineman. I know Carlos is licking his chops to knock out Big Ben. Lets take this season one game at a time, we were bound to loss at some point. Now its more about learning from mistakes and showing everyone we can bounce back! This loss will aslo pay dividends later in the year, maybe in the playoffs, because we will have the experience of being down multiple TDsagainst a playoff caliber team. And we will know what it takes to overcome the mistakes and finish the game winning/ tying drive.

I know AJ hasn't been shown on the injury report, but I expect him to miss the next couple of games until we get the steelers again. So i want him to be well rested and have him the rest of the season.

RE:

I’m not sure if I’ve felt the level blame or anger you are. I mean compared to the games in 2010, this is a cake walk with most people acknowledging that they were in the game until the very end are that close. But hey. A loss that’s pulled from you within 25 yards and over two minutes remaining will make anyone sour for a little while. :-)

It's understandable to be frustrated that we couldn't catch enough breaks yesterday to win.

But we still have a lot to be happy about. Look, at least we’re not Browns fans. I’m sure there’s probably rants against the organization coming from left and right over at Dawgs By Nature right now.

with you there

yet, as much as i love the bengals and having been a bengals fan a long time, i accept mike brown’s reign much like the love of a bad B movie. with lowered expectations, you can still enjoy the experience.

for example:
1) the bengals have a chance to be .500 or better at the end of the season.
[x] defines a good season for the past 21 years.

2) the bengals have more wins thans arrests in a season
[x] defines a good season for the past 10 years.

lowered expectations. we all have ’em. think about it.

No Doubt

Im sorry if I am coming off like I’m angry. The NFL season is crazy because it can seem like one week your up and the next week your down. I was trying to give a level headed prespective on things and not jump to conclusions about certain players. I think after a tough loss its easy to point fingers and jump ship.

Im passionate about football because I have played football during my high school and college days, and Im sure most people on here participated in orgranized team athletics. And I have been a bengals fan as far as I can remember. But its important not to look to far ahead and take one thing at a time.

I like the point you're making, but I'm going to nitpick for a second right here...

I think the Steelers would still be in first after next week even if we win because head-to-head takes precedence over division record.

hmmmm

i could have sworn the it goes by divsion record, then conference record and then head to head to determine seeds and division winners.

I'm not angry

With a rookie QB and a new offensive system, I’ve been viewing this as a rebuilding year. That doesn’t mean I’m ruling out the playoffs, by any means, but I’ve tried to make my expectations more reasonable. I’m annoyed by some Marvinisms that have cropped up—an over-reliance on a single RB, secondary issues, OL personnel decisions (anyone remember Anthony Collins?)—but I also have to give him credit, as things have been improving in this second era of his reign. I mean, I complained about the defensive line for years, and it’s now better than I ever thought it would be.

Next year, I might be angry. This year, no, I’m keeping things in perspective.

by Big Sky Bengal on Nov 14, 2011 6:56 PM EST reply actions

We're finally "A TEAM" !!!

You’re right about Collins(what’s up with that)?

+ I don’t know what they have against giving Leonard and Peerman more carries.
From what I saw of Peerman in the Pre-season, the guy made something out of nothing almost every time he touched the ball and he ran real hard as well( a bruiser).

Let’s face it, Benson hasn’t been exactly getting it done.

As far as Coach Lewis goes………….Gotta give him credit
His “Find-a-way” & “Next-man-up” Philosophy is contagious throughout the team.
And they are (it seems to be) finally “A TEAM”!!

by gratefulmax on Nov 14, 2011 7:16 PM EST reply actions

Leonard was clearly hurt

He was listed as questionable and the one carry he received he was tackled by Troy behind the line and got up gingerly. I agree with Peerman. If he runs anything like he plays special teams it can’t be bad.

by Seapit on Nov 14, 2011 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

I think thats the problem

lol he is so effective on special teams they don’t want to use as a RB and lose his edge during kick offs and punts

by AMAS85 on Nov 14, 2011 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

could be

I’d definitely give Peerman a look for the starting role. At least let him get in there once in a while. Hell even the game Benson was suspended didn’t have a single Peerman carry. I love his play on special teams, but could they really value that over a potentially significant improvement at RB?

by indesignkat on Nov 15, 2011 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Im sure if they thought he would be an upgrade

he would have started by now, but Peerman seems to be in on the tackle or makeing a key block on every special teams play. Im surprised he didnt’ get nominated for the pro-bowl

good catch, but you know what I meant

But I guess I didnt’ realize that the head to head record was used before the division record to determin rank. But either way we still need to split the series against the Pittsburgh

4-2 in the division gets us to the Playoffs

as long as we don’t wet the bed in the other games. If Schaub can’t go for Houston, I like our chances in that one.

if we go 3-3 in the division

we should make the playoffs; asuming we win two other games outside the divison. So i like our odds, and with Schaub out, that will increase our chances too!

Bruised knee

I have played with a bruised knee, I couldn’t run that day, but I was fine the next week. He should be fine, he came back in in this game, just couldn’t go full speed.

Im sure he will be a game time decision

because at best he may have a few limited practices and I think its something they want to heal up fulling because they wouldn’t want a season ending injury.

I don't understand the headline

Are people blaming the refs? Excuse making? Not sure what your intent was.

by supergrover on Nov 15, 2011 10:06 AM EST reply actions

My intent was to say something positive

It just seemed like people were calling for heads already after a tough game, my point was to take things one at a time and there is plenty of football left to fix things. Specifically, at the WR position.

What I don't get is the poor play of Simpson and Caldwell.

Some of the passes they are dropping are ones that some of the better athletes on this board could catch. Okay, maybe that is a bit of an exageration, but you get my point. They need to look themselves in the mirror and man up.It is crunch time.

You are so right JJ!

But I ain’t mad!!! No…..It goes how it goes, and we lost. As much as any of the fan base wanted, no, “NEEDED” that particular win – we lost.
Good things, and bad things happened
1. The Defense couldn’t find its own butt in the first half and let the Steelers handle them. Thank God we got Zim making adjustments but I wish we could do better for 4 quarters instead of 2.

2. The Offense was well run by Dalton. Benson was decent and Scott ran really well (he just scares me from a ball security perspective).
Whit has got to stop holding…
After looking at that last drive again and again, I am convinced it was a slant route and Simpson pulled up. Dalton’s pass was a dart like all the others he’s been throwing all game. And had Simpson kept running, one of two things would’ve happened:

   A. Simpson would’ve had a better chance of catching it and making a first down, or…
   B. The defender would’ve hit him before the ball got there and it would have been pass interference and a first down!

As a team I don;t think they shower confidence save for the Dalton / Green connection.

Gresham was back. Was it too soon? Because he didn’t look forceful.
No matter how we shake it, Sunday’s game with the Ravens is a “MUST” win if we expect to be a challenge in the AFCN this year. Matt Schaub with the Texans is out for the year., I was scared of that game, but now I’m ok and feel better about us winning it.

I am hoping this loss was the Bengals biggest lesson-learned this season; that they KNOW what it takes to WIN!

"I am hoping this loss was the Bengals biggest lesson-learned this season; that they KNOW what it takes to WIN!"

I like what you said in the last part. I think this will let us know what type of team we have this year. Kind of like a few years back, when we lost that crazy game against the Broncos on a fluke play and then pounded the packers the very next week. I hope we see the same thing!

We are on the same page Law on all but one point.

I don’t think this game is a must win. We have four games against teams we could very well expect to lose. The Steelers at home, Baltimore at home and away and the Texans at home. The other three games (Browns, Rams,Cardinals) we really should win – if we can’t beat them with the playoffs on the line we don’t deserve to play in the post season.

Some think 9 wins could get us there. I wasn’t sure 10 wins would but I was schooled and now I think 10 will do it. We have 6 wins, the 3 we really should win makes it 9 wins and that leaves one more win needed. If we beat the Texans we are probably in even if we don’t beat the Ravens or Steelers.

I think we can beat the Ravens at home – they are a pretty bad road team compared to their home record. Can we win this Sunday – yea. I think we just might. I also think we can beat the Steelers in their house. Here again I think we just might. In fact, my gut tells me that it is not out of the question that we sweep them. Flacco isn’t near the QB Ben is IMO. Their D is a bit more physical than Pittsburgh but it is easier to figure out for Dalton. I also don’t think their WRs are quite as good, though their TEs are very good. But I don’t think we need to win again in the AFCN if we win all of the others. I just want to beat them both – just to shut people up.
