Defensive Backs

It's ironic, going into this game I was worried about the starting Corners but I thought Clements and Jones both had very solid games.  Didn't hear Jones name that much, which can be a good thing for CB and he actually made a few nice hustle plays.   Clements got beat once by Torri Smith but the coverage actually was not all that bad and Flacco made a perfect throw and Torri Smith made a really nice catch.  Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to your oppenenent for making the play and I think that's what happened on that catch.  He then made up for it later with a pretty nice int.  Overall, I thought the CB's played well

Now our safeties are an entirely different story, especially Chris Crocker.  I thought he had the worst game of anyone on the team.  He flat out missed Ray Rice completely when he made the that long run (didn't even slow him down) and run support is suppose to be his specialty.  He was blown away and way late getting there on Torri Smith's long TD catch.  We cannot afford these kind of let downs from out safety position, especially with the turmoil going on at the CB postion with Leon Halls injury.  This is the first week, I really saw Taylor Mays make a contribution (awesome special teams hit) and I'd be interrested to see if they start getting him more involved in the defensive game plan, especially with Crocker playing so poorly.  Who knows maybe it was just one bad game but IMO if he doesn't start picking up his play they are going to have to start looking at other options.

That would be OK.

But no way the Skins cut him. His off days beat most of the Skins’ DBs’ on days.

If the Skins cut him...

we absolutely need to sign him as he’s got what we need from our corners, speed. That’s what killed us yesterday against Torrey Smith.

would love that

But absolutely will never happen.

been a big supporter of crocker all year

But I can’t do it anymore. Time to see what Mays and Sands can do.

me too

same with Benson. Been supporting, but I can’t take the “ok, this drive is mine. You get the next one.” mix it up

Me too

Mainly b/c everytime I hear him he seems like such a good guy and such a good veteran influence in the young locker room. Unfortunately that’s not enough if you are not making the plays you need to make on the field.

If Donte Whitner had not spurned us this offseason...

we wouldn’t even be having this conversation right now most likely as Crocker wouldn’t even be starting. Damn you Whitner.

Crocker has gotten on my last nerve with his play of late...

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I miss the days when we had Madieu Williams and Kevin Kaesviharn playing safety for us as those guys were ball-hawks and could actually cover despite the fact our defense wasn’t as good when they were playing for us (damn you Chuck Bresnahan). Crocker just doesn’t cut it in coverage and on top of that whatever physicality he possessed when we picked him up back in 2008 seems to have disappeared. Nelson had a bad game too but at least he’s willing to make the big hits which is something Mays can do. We should have picked up Chris Harris when we had the chance plain and simple but right now I’d say Mays might be our best option at SS.

Nelson

that lick he put on Smith coming into the end zone was good. He had zero chance to tackle him and stop him from getting in the end zone, but he nearly separated him from the ball with that hit.

by supergrover on Nov 21, 2011 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

Out of those three...

I actually like Tom Nelson the best as I thought his play only started to deteriorate in 2009 once he started playing injured. But I remember when he first came in and started playing for an injured Crocker in the Lions game. He had an interception of Stafford and also laid a brutal lick on Calvin Johnson that caused him to drop the ball in that game. Granted he did get burned on a deep pass to Johnson at the end of the game as Johnson went up between both him and Hall to make one of his crazy inhuman catches but Nelson I thought was solid until he got hurt. I remember Roy Williams and Crocker actually comparing him to Jason Sehorn on Hard Knocks during training camp. Might have been a bit of an unrealistic comparision but I thought he could have at least been another Kevin Kaesviharn-type safety for us. Murray was a converted corner and specials teams specialist so I always had trouble trusting him as a starter, even over Crocker.

What about Robert Sands?

Surprised he hasn’t gotten a look. Guy’s got great size and speed. I just don’t know how we could do any worse than Crocker.

For the record, though, Tom Nelson would be worse than Crocker…

by eric nyc on Nov 21, 2011 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

No one's worse than Crocker at this point...

Roy Williams was better than Crocker we should have kept him for one more year and shown Crocker the door instead. I’d like to see Sands get a shot as I think he could be useful covering TEs with his height. I have questions about his speed and tackling ability though from what I’ve seen in preseason. But if we’re going to be drafting a safety early in next year’s draft the guy I would want Mark Barron from Alabama.

by dstacify on Nov 21, 2011 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

I'd probably take a look at Mays before Sands

If for no other reason than he was a higher draft pick. The knock on Sands coming out of the draft is that he wasn’t good in coverage, and I think he’d have a hard time covering NFL WRs. Let him develop some more and give us some special teams play.

But right now I’d have to take Mays over Crocker. He’s definitely faster than Crocker, and I doubt he’s any more mistake prone than Crocker either.

Clements did not have a good game.

He had a pick that was basically thrown right to him, but other than that he was busy getting burnt by Torrey Smith all day. It didn’t help that he had zero safety help, but Clements is looking old for 31. We’re going to have a lot of trouble with Andre Johnson and Mike Wallace. I know we sort of kept Wallace in check last week, but he was behind our DB’s a lot and they just couldn’t get the ball to him.

Jones looked alright, but he wasn’t breaking up any plays. He made solid tackles to control the damage, but he wasn’t really covering anyone. If the Ravens didn’t have such a big lead most of the day I think Flacco would have been airing it out more against us.

by eric nyc on Nov 21, 2011 4:05 PM EST reply actions

I agree...

Jennings actually did better than Clements when he was in there as I don’t remember Jennings getting beat at all although there was one deep ball for Smith where he got ran around but Flacco overthrew the pass. I would’ve liked to see Brandon Ghee in there a little more. But I think this game proves that Clements would be better utilized as our SS next season.

by dstacify on Nov 21, 2011 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

can we expect clements to cover smith?

We all know smith is way faster. Clements needs to cover people like boldin and even Andre Johnson where his physical play is better suited.

by JCompton41 on Nov 21, 2011 4:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

someone other than clements

So yea Jones or Jennings, or even ghee. Clements can not run with smith, no question about it. Smith is a pure deep threat, clements in not a corner who plays the deep ball well. I’m sure they expected more saftey help, so they counted on clements and crocker to be able to do.something. Zimmer needs to not put clements in that position, and use his speed vs.their speed.

by JCompton41 on Nov 21, 2011 4:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Disagree

I really only saw one play he was beat and it was on that long throw down the sideline where Flacco threw a perfect pass. Even with the speed mismatch and no safety he made Flacco have to make a great pass to make the play because he was pretty much right with him until the very end. Kelly Jennings got smoked on the same route earlier by 4 steps but the ball was over thrown. Considering the position he was put in and the speed mis match I thought he played pretty well, IMO he should have been coveriing Bolden b/c it is a more favorable match up for his skill set

by biggie22 on Nov 21, 2011 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

Without Leon Hall, our secondary is weak...

Clements is a good tackler and route coverage guy but he’s not great. Jennings is fast but can’t cover, Jones has missed how many weeks?, our safeties have never been known as coverage guys. It’s no mystery that the Bengals need to draft a CB next year. Jones is a free agent after this year and Clements and will be in the final year of his contract next year. and we need another “shut down” corner to partner with Leon.

by goffchile on Nov 21, 2011 4:31 PM EST reply actions

Our secondary is weak "with" Leon Hall.

He’s lost a step or two and while he’s still pretty good, I think he’s past his prime too. We need to get “fresh”. I could see mays getting a shot against the Browns. Nelson is just horrific IMO.

I represent the Bengals of Cincinnati with extreme passion and prejudice and make no apologies for it!
