Ask Behind the Steel Curtain

Hey guys. This is a much better game than what we all expected at the beginning of the year and I think the general mood at BTSC is depressed but hopeful. However, I know what this Bengals team is capable of. They take care of the ball, wear you down, and play great defense. I think some key matchups in this game are Ike Taylor vs. A.J. Green and James Harrison vs. Andrew Whitworth. If one team wins both those matchups, I think they win the game. Also, if Woodley plays I think you guys are in trouble. I know Andre Smith has been better this year but he can't handle the beast that is LaMarr Woodley. I think this is a classic game that goes down to the wire, my prediction Steelers 28, Bengals 21

Here are some questions for you guys

1. How did you abuse the Raiders so bad in that trade?

2. Who is your unknown player that has been performing very well?

3. What do yall really think of Big Ben? Top 5, Top 10, Bottom 5?

Please keep the Big Ben rape jokes, the Mendy terrorist jokes, the Hines Ward being a drunk jokes, and any other stupid, unoriginal Steelers jokes to a minimum.

big ben is top 10 for sure

He is so elusive and throws on the play action better then anyone. will be a tough game. I think our TE’s are the secret offensive weapon. we pass to them more then we ever did when carson was here. I think Steelers putting 28 on our defense wont happen, but will be fun to watch.

Big Ben is playing like a top 5 QB right now

and that’s what scares me because our secondary is pretty weak.

How good is your number 2 corner?
Jerome Harrison usually gets shut out by big Whit, do you expect anything different?
Why the turn around for Ben from his horrible start to the year?
How is your outlook for the year already being 0-2 in this division?

I like answering stuff

1. Our number two corner for most of the year has been Keenan Lewis who is finally showing some overdue promise since being a 3rd round rookie. He plays coverage well and has improved as a tackler. Occasionally Will Gay plays the #2 role, and despite having a horrible game against the Ravens, he has actually been reasonably solid this year.

2. James Harrison is coming off a huge game and plays angry. I think he gets at least 1 sack in this one, just because of his relentless motor. Big Whit is majorly underrated and I think this will be a great matchup

3. Big Ben wasnt that horrible, his only lousy games were Baltimore in Week One and Houston in Week Four. Underprepared from a shortened offseason perhaps? Also he had to adjust to not having Hines Ward as his cushion receiver. He has well and truly adjusted now and our receiving core is among the best in the league

4. Finally, good on Baltimore, they outplayed us twice and deserved each win. I do not think it is panic mode yet, not with 7 games to go. I think we can go at least 5-2 the rest of the way, possibly even undefeated after the bye, and if we beat you guys at Cincinnati, the only tough game remaining is the 49ers (never thought I’d say that)

I'm not so sure about top 5...

But I’d say Ben is a top 10 QB easily, borderline top 5.

Now, what do you think of our QB? Would you give OROY to him or Newton? Or someone else?
Also, AJ Green. I know you from MTD and I know you’re a draft nut, so you’ve probably watched more college film on him than most of us. Where do you honestly see him ranking among NFL receivers at the peak of his career? I’d say top 3 isn’t a stretch at all.

Newton Vs Dalton

Dalton has done well, but I’d go with Newton.
That is the same 2-14 team from last year, and he’s got them in every game. It is almost all him.
And while the Bengals were 4-12 last year, they also got rid of a lot of their problem players (Palmer, Ocho, Owens etc) and they are kinda back to the sort of team they had in 09, just with more young, hungry, talented players.
Not to discount what Dalton has done, I just think what Newton is doing is once in a generation stuff.
No one really expected Dalton to do what he’s done, Newton had the extra pressure of being the number 1 pick.

Even though you weren’t asking me either of these questions, I’m still going to answer them

the other question, the sky is the limit for that guy. If he stays hungry and maximizes his potential, yes, he will be top 3 material.

they are both ready to take this league by the balls very soon.

If Andy takes this team to the playoffs the perception of him will grow

I think Cam is going to be a great QB of the future. Andy is more of a throwback. He looks a lot more like Kenny Anderson than Michael Vick. If we don’t make it to the playoffs Can is the ROY, if he continues to play like he has. If we do go to the post season as case could easily be made for Dalton. It isn’t just about stats. I would take either but Andy is a great fit for this teams style.

I'm not sure who, over the length of his career, I would put ahead of him

Back when he came in, I argued hardily that Palmer was better than him. That, however, did not hold up. Ben got better. Palmer got stale and then got hurt and got worse and had no leadership skills behind it. (FWIW, i don’t really see Roethlisberger as leaderly. Their leadership comes from Ward and something internalized by the team)

Definitely ahead of Ben over last 5 years/ obvious:
Brady
Brees
PManning
Rodgers

but then who else is clearly ahead of him?

Dunno

People who are arguable, but I don’t really think are ahead of Roethlisberger:
Romo (I think no way, much of his claim is being the Cowboy QB)
Favre (close, but no)
E Manning (close, but no)
Rivers

People who others might argue, but I wouldn’t even consider:
Sanchez
Ryan
McNabb
Stafford
Vick
Schaub

I’m probably missing someone obvious.

I love AJ Daltons toughness

The kid knows how to play, and he has that mental strength that often takes years to fully inherit. Plus, the immeasurable asset he has is his rapport with AJ Green. I was really high on Green before the draft, and even more so now, as long as Dalton doesnt regress, Green could be mentioned in the top 5 receivers in the game after just a few years

However, I think Cam Newton has played better, and more deserving of OROY right now. No offense intended.

For A.J. Green I watched a ton of film on him and I see him as a potential top 10 WR in the NFL

I see him as Megatron Lite with slightly more speed. If he continues to work hard and stays out of trouble, I see him and Dalton being one of the scariest combos in the NFL in two to three years. Also, if you remember, I had Dalton as my #3 QB behind just Newton and Locker so I really did like him out of the draft. I also gave you guys an A on both of your first two picks so I am really scared of what this team can become.

And for the Raiders

That one still blows my mind. When I heard that we traded him to Oakland, I thought we got a 2nd or 3rd round pick. As soon as I saw the package, I was in total dismay. Hue Jackson (despite being a good coach) is delusional. With that said I believe Carson still has some good football left in him, but I see him as a 25 TD/20 INT guy. Convincing Hue to bring in TJ has to split the Locker room. They benched their former 1st rd pick DHB in favor for TJ, and DHB was having a hell of a season. This just goes to show me how spoiled Carson still is, and I wouldnt doubt it if his crappy brother Jordan Palmer ended up on the team before the season is over. Ha Ha

it is what it is

a mid to late 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder. similar to the kolb deal with a premium paid by the raiders to make the trade during the season rather than waiting for the off season rate.

TJ!? thats just crazy.

I cannot see why they would do that. Palmer has some good years left (he did have three td’s last week). But he is not going to be the guy that carries a team anymore and thats pretty much what they paid for him.

Ben... bottom 5

No not really, but I wish. At least top 10.

Unknown player: Lee and Cochart have been filling in very nicely for Gresham, but I think I have to go with Brian Leonard. He is the 3rd and 4th down beast. He sees where the chains are and he gets there no matter what.

Raiders: I couldn’t believe anyone would give so much for Palmer.

I know Andre Smith has been better this year but he can’t handle the beast that is LaMarr Woodley.
Note: Andre Smith handled Robert Mathis and held him to a stat line of 0. Not even an assisted tackle.

Unknown player: Andrew Hawkins

Never thought to see him with such a prominent role, and probably wouldn’t have if Green hadn’t gone down. With the limited work he had done prior, he had done well, but I completely looked over Hawkins. Probably because his role had been so small up to then.

by Oregonbengalsfan on Nov 16, 2011 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

My key matchups are pretty simple

Our DB’s against your receivers and your O-line against our D-line

IMO – Our d-line may be our biggest strength and your oline may be your biggest liability and on the flip side our secondary may be our biggest liability and you receivers are at least starting to become one of you biggest strengths

Ben’s on the fringe of the top 5.

My unknown player who has been performing well (other than Carlos Dunlap) is LB Thomas Howard (he’s an atheltic freak) and I think he’s going to be important in coverage this week against Heath Miller

by biggie22 on Nov 9, 2011 10:01 PM EST reply actions

The O-line made the Ravens D-line a none factor which is no easy task.

Its great having the same O-line for the 4th consecutive week for once.

Ben had plenty of time and only 1 sack. Their were plenty of running lanes for Mendenhall to use as well.

1. How did you abuse the Raiders so bad in that trade? Spectre of Al Davis.

2. Who is your unknown player that has been performing very well? Carlos Dunlap, Andrew Whitworth, Kyle Cook, Geno Atkins.

3. What do yall really think of Big Ben? Top 5, Top 10, Bottom 5? He makes plays outside of the pocket, and for that reason he’s in the top half. He also holds onto the ball far too long sometimes and has some explosive weaons. I’d say he’s around 10.

Let’s get this straight… molesting little kids IS a big deal… no question about that. I was just saying I’m tired of hearing about it. And yes, I turn off their program when I hear them talking about it.

no

not dismissive of what happened, it’s more of an indictment to how crazy people go for that type of stuff. Everyone flails around like those wacky arm waving blow up dolls trying to point fingers etc. And on top of that, they love to see people on top fall one way or another. As I mentioned in another thread, there were people trying to dig up dirt on Mr Rogers for a loooooooooong time. That’s the kind of stuff that makes me sick.
You think the victims want this stuff playing on loop all day? I’m pretty sure they want to TRY to get back to a normal life, not have reporters in their face every day for the next month.

As far as what happened, no one really knows yet, I’ve already heard conflicting reports. Not saying nothing happened, but, at first I heard that he caught them having sex, then i heard he was just touching him. I don’t know.

Biggest thing we need to do is for our DLine to contain Ben.

If we can keep him inside of a collapsing pocket and actually bring him down I think we will win this game. If, however, he is able to squeeze out and extend a lot of plays I think it could give us some trouble and it will be a lot closer. I’d say for his elusiveness and ability to extend plays he’s definitely in the top 10… and he’s been playing really quite well lately. I’m hoping he sucks it up against the Bengals, though! :)

accepting the blame on being hypersensitive here

But if one of us had posted comments like this about the steelers on BTSC, the responses that followed the post would have been less than friendly.

This is a much better game than what we all expected at the beginning of the year

the bengals are expected to be bad, the steelers are expected to be good? is this the thought you wanted to convey?

1. How did you abuse the Raiders so bad in that trade?

how about something that has less of an opinion in the question, not everyone here feels it was a mugging of walker proportions. “do you all like the palmer trade? did the raiders get a fair deal in the trade? etc.”

Please keep the Big Ben rape jokes, the Mendy terrorist jokes, the Hines Ward being a drunk jokes, and any other stupid, unoriginal Steelers jokes to a minimum.

This statement is pretty much what set me into the hypersensitive mood. If you’ve ever come here, do you see any history of cincyjungle ragging on other teams with derogatories? about as heated as it gets around here, a few of us vs a few of the more vocal raven fans. even then, there are voices of reason from cincyjungle asking us to tone it down.

imagine how it would have gone if one of us had posted this on BTSC with a summary of: “Please keep the convict jokes, the we day jokes, the bungles, bangles, bangirls jokes to a minimum.” is it an insult of a suggestion that says we can’t talk about football?

I don't see anything wrong with him ASKING to talk about football and not get into insults about each other's teams.

I’ve never been over to the Steelers’ forums, so I have no clue what goes on over there and I might say the same thing. There are bound to be SOME posters that will go there, so to me it’s not a bad idea to just tell those people to not bother before they even get a chance.

was just the implication that we can't talk football here

like i said i’m being hypersensitive this morning. it rubbed me wrong. i thought on it for 5-10 minutes before i posted. since i’m almost coming at it from an inflammatory angle. i needed to be sure i really felt that way about what he posted. and looking back at it 10 minutes later, it did.

We're talking about the unwashed Steelers here

Why in the hell would someone presume that we would sit down and civilly discuss football with people that support those baby-eating vermin? If it happens, you’re lucky, but if the nature of right-thinking Bengals fans takes over and the veneer of civility cracks, it’s only to be expected.

Yes!!

I had a problem with the predictions. It is a under a friendly guise, as in “Ask BTSC”, but once is starts going to a prediction about Woodley beasting and the Squealers winning by a touchdown, which is over twice the spread, that’s politely shoving it in our face. If friendly dialog is the aim, and learning about the team is the goal, keep it there. Saying you already know what will happen, and that it will be the same as it has been for years now, is not conducive to friendly banter or learning about the other team. Save that crap for over there!

Ok

obviously your toughness meter works better than mine. Yes, Harrison missed games because he was held out, however, he continued to play the rest of that game that the injury occurred in.
Ben fakes injuries? you can see them happen. For instance, the Ratbird player twisted his foot in the pile, the Rat bird punching him in the nose, and every other cheap shot he’s been forced to take without consequence for the offender.
But again, your toughness meter is obviously the expensive model.
Not really sure how you “going to college with him” matters. There are plenty of people that went to my college that I would have no clue about when it comes to how tough they are.
By the way, even the Steelers fiercest rival has two pretty tough players in their own right that concur with what I say about Ben, and have been quoted as such (Ray Lewis, Benjamin Buford Blue). But again, you are the expert.

about “who dey” isn’t the guy who started that gone? why would you want to hang on to it? and what the hell does it even mean? didn’t another team already have a “who ….”

point being

just b/c your a steeler fan (and apparent homer) doesn’t mean your right on who you view to be the toughest players in the leage (conveniently all steelers, weird). Sometimes other people disagree. Initially you said Hines Ward was the toughest player in the leage…but now you might think it’s your QB? which is it?

My point about Harrison not being the toughest was to refute your claim that he played through the injury- yes he finished the game, then sat a few out. How does that make him the toughest? One of the meanest, probably but in my world where I don’t worship everything Steelers, mean and tough aren’t the same thing.

My point about going to college w/Ben was that he did the same BS back then- and I apologize if I worded that wrong, I don’t think he fakes injuries I think he plays them up and acts/shows that he is WAY more hurt than he really is (ie: Dwayne Wade).

Furthermore, I never claimed to be an expert, just a passionate fan that happens to disagree w/your opinion of who are the toughest players in the league.

About the whole Who Dey thing…there wasn’t 1 guy who started it, and if you’re really such a giant Steeler fan, how do you not know more about it ?
We hang onto it b/c it’s our ‘war cry’ of sorts, kinda like those lame yellow towels Pittsburgh fans think they invented…why do you hang on to that?
-The other team your referring to is the Saints, and it’s Who Dat…it’s also heavily debated who had it first.

good luck Sunday- i hope we can survice against the toughest WR/QB combo to ever live..haha

First

I didn’t say Hines was, that was someone else. I did not say Harrison was either. My one and only comment before the last one was “maybe not, but Ben is” I mean, he had the exact same thing happen to him that Tom Brady and Carson Palmer did, but he missed two plays instead of 12 months

I was under the impression that Chad Johnson is the one that started the whodey thing. Are you saying he’s not the one?

The terrible towel thing was created by Myron Cope and the sales manager at the time as some sort of gimmick, with profits from the sale going to some sort of charity.
It is credited as being the first rally towel used in a sports venue, obviously not the last, since lots of other teams have used something similar since, including TJ Houshmanzadeh (sp?)

Lastly, how would being a Steeler fan give me knowledge of a Bengals…whatever you called it.?

we're done here

“I mean, he had the exact same thing happen to him that Tom Brady and Carson Palmer did, but he missed two plays instead of 12 months”
—-either you’re dense enough to believe Ben shredded his ACL/MCL and then healed himself in 2 plays or your completely oblivious as to what happens when someone twists and ankle vs blowing out a ligament in a knee….hopefully you are referring to something else.

You think Chad Johnson started teh Who Dey chant….or song that dates back to the early 80’s late 70’s….so i guess you’re a new Steeler fan???

As far as the terrible towel- the Steelers did not “invent” that in sports, i do not care what you want to try and tell me. :)

Being a Steeler fan would give you knowledge of another divisional rival (of what 30-40 years? —sorry too lazy to look up how long we’ve been in teh same division) unless of course you’re stuck so deep in your own little Steeler World that you can’t seem to pick up even a little common knowledge of a division foe. Around here that’s not a foreign concept.

Good luck tomorrow man

yes, new Steeler fan….Feb 2nd 2009
So…again with the assertion that I should know or care about the Bengals because I like the Steelers. No offense, but how many times have the needed to be paid attention to?
If it was used before that, there wasn’t a lot of it going on between 1991 (when i was old enough to actually understand what was going on) and a few years ago.
you are a master of taking words and twisting, as evidenced in your next sentence where you use quotations around the word “invent”. Went back and read, i didn’t see the word “invent” in there one time. I said, “they are credited”. Which is a fact, you can deny it all you want, I didn’t make it up.

And lastly, no it wouldn’t. I know about them two weeks a year, and it is specifically related to who is on their team. I couldn’t care less about their ridiculous butchering of the English language.:)
By the way, there is no such thing as “common knowledge” of the Bengals besides the negative that they are finally addressing.

Good luck for what? I’m just sitting around watching football.

Sorry, i sent that too early

Some of our fans keep complaining that we don’t run enough, of course they are completely ignoring the fact that running rarely works.
Me personally, I love the pass first. That’s how you win in this league now, the rules are set up so you can’t touch the QB, you can’t stop a receiver from catching the ball, and you can’t do the early 2000’s Pats thing and hold the receivers all over the field. We have a great QB, and a very very good receiving corps I’m all for it.

The O line has been great since Starks came back. Ben only got sacked once against the Ravens who are among the best pass rushing teams in the league. Depth isn’t too bad, unless I’m forgetting something, only Legs is out, and he’s not very good.

1. I think Ward will suit up, but his playing time will be limited. Either way, our main receivers are Wallace, Brown and Sanders. Ward has moved into a more background, 3rd down receiver and mentor. I think this is his last season.

2. Hate it, but when in Rome, do what the Romans do. The league is deteriorating evolving into a pass happy spectacle. So be it. To compete, you need to score points quickly and attack from all angles. I am not happy with it,but having one of the better QBs in the league makes it easier to handle.

3. OLine has played fine the last few weeks, even against the Ravens I think they had their best performance. Starks is back playing well, and Marcus Gilbert has been a nice surprise as a rookie too

1. I don’t think we abused the Raiders at all. We helped ourselves, and we helped them. The fact that we made out in the deal could be attributed to their loss of Al Davis. I feel Al would never have gone for such a deal. Instead, he’d have teed-up Prior and threw him out there as quickly as he could. Bad deals can happen to any team. As an example look back to last year when the acquired Antonio Bryant. 7 mil guaranteed – dude didn’t play a down because our inept medical staff misdiagnosed his condition. And yes, they were summarily fired for it! Remember – in this world “Turnabout is fair play”.
.
2. There are no “UNKNOWNS” to us. One surprise player – I’d say probably Donald Lee. dude’s coming up big for us!
.
3. Ben – still in the top 10 although IMO his line is quickly becoming older and more ordinary.

Questions for you –
What surprises your fanbase about the Bengals this year?
You’re 6-3 at this point. How confident are you guys about this year?
Are Farrior, Hines, and Woodley gonna play? And what of Palamalu? With a rib injury breathing may be difficult for him. But knowing him, they would have to strap him down to keep him out!
Thanks

I can say that when we interact with other teams’ fans, we, to my knowledge, don’t lower ourselves to lobbing obscenities at other teams.

I got pinged for a couple / few f-bombs in a post, but it wasn’t directed at the visitors. I hope it didn’t offend, as that wasn’t my intent. The post was, appropriately, deleted, but it was just a joke youtube idea for a bengal fan with a steeler fan girlfriend/wife.

First game...many things

Second game, the same problem as the Super Bowl (William Gay) Clark deserves some blame, but if Gay didn’t get completely torched…..
Over all they didn’t really “have our number” in the second game, they just won a tough game.
Ben was awesome outside of that stupid screen he tried, and Mendy was very effective when called upon.

Big question:

Is there any way I could get the Steelers to make Gay cover(try) AJ Green instead of Taylor????

by TheVilified on Nov 10, 2011 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

1st game was horrible, they were much better prepared and conditioned

They started quick and just wore us out. Not much more couldve gone wrong

As for the 2nd game, they had a solid passing attack gameplan and took advantages of the mismatches that their TE’s called. They also attacked William Gay who chose a horrible time to have his worst game of the season. Again, their offense appeared better conditioned than our defense, as we looked out on our feet on that 92 yard drive for the win

Hines Ward's Future?

iIget the hines ward love from Steelers fans, and what he meant/means to your franchise/city….but IMO you’re offense is 3x more explosive with him out of the lineup. Sanders or Brown can both run a slow 10-15 yard route like Hines, but unlike Hines- they each can turn that into some serious YAC’s.

What is the longterm plan for him w/the emergence of your young Recievers? He has 2 years left on his contract if I’m not mistaken, but IMO the younger guys (Brown,Sanders) have earned more PT and make your offense that much more dangerous/explosive

I think Hines is in his last season

Being brutally honest, thats how I feel and it kills me to say that. He has already made way for the likes of Antonio Brown and he has been a great mentor to the young receivers.

However, he is still very crafty and has a place on 3rd downs and wide sets

This. I just hope he comes back as our WR coach or on our staff in some sort of way

draftdatabase.wordpress.com

My coach walks in on Monday of Bergen week (Bergen Catholic is our biggest rival) and tells us that a media member told him that the Bergen players were talking shi*t about how they are going to kick our a*s. He then says, "you know what I told the media member to tell the Bergen Players? To suck my di*k and eat it. They have no fuc*ing chance of beating us because we are tougher than them"

Since you've opened up predictions, how about this...

I think that both teams are very strong and similar going into the game. The Steelers have a worse offensive line, but better secondary. Everything else seems fairly equal, though the Steelers have much more experience. The game comes down to the wire (as you said) and the last possession will hinge on one of the clutch QB’s going up against a one of the league’s top defenses on the other side of the ball. It would be difficult to really say who does what in that situation, and it will likely be very contextual. Regardless, Count me in on that ride!

I think Ultimately the Bengals are realistically the only competition left for for the Ravens in the division. The Ravens seem to have the upper hand in that they have beaten the Steelers twice. I think the Bengals will take one, possibly two games from the 4 games they have combined against these two teams. The division will likely go to the Ravens due to an easier schedule the rest of the way. Pittsburgh will get a middle to high draft pick if they beat out the Bengals, but due to poor protection issues, this won’t be a repeat of The Gifted Super Bowl Run.

Ultimately the Bengals will put the finishing touches on their promising roster through the draft with the number of high round picks they have over the next couple of years. The Steelers will be battling with an in adequate offensive line and an aging defense, as the once greats show signs of slowing. Ben Rothlisburger won’t be able to put up 30 points per game and start to show that he is not truly a top 10 quarterback when he doesn’t get help on the other side of the ball of a top 3 defense every year. He has explosive WRs to keep him relevant, but the Steelers are not the threats that they once were. Meanwhile the Bengals will be boasting an impressive roster, and with the retirement of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, the Bengals are the favorites to win AFC north, and contenders for Lombardi, for a string of several years.

Please, don’t include homeristic predictions when you are trying to shake hands before the game on the other team’s turf.

Try not to take the above message too seriously.

I saw the comment that Roethlisberger would be locked up if he had raped anyone.

That is absolute insanity. Anybody that can form mouth or fingers to say that knows nothing about justice in America particularly where rape is concerned. Who in the hell believes that kind of stuff anymore?

The prosecutor in the most publicized case involving Roethlisberger went as far as he could go without getting himself into trouble to disclose that what happened in that bathroom was rape of a pretty egregious nature. The case fell apart because the victim would not cooperate, which is something that happens quite often in rape cases for what should be obvious reasons by now.

Presumption of innocence is one thing; presumption of magical thinking is another. Is it a lead-pipe cinch that no Bengals ran a train on that woman in Seattle? Is it a lead-pipe cinch that Ray Lewis didn’t kill that guy in Atlanta? It is quite likely that Ben Roethlisberger not only did something, but did something very bad to more than one woman and yet remains unincarcerated. I suppose that it’s technically not appropriate to persecute the man in the absence of conviction, but are you going to let him within 10 feet of your daughter?

I guess some would

B/c Jerry Sandusky was allowed around hundreds if not thousands of kids. He was never prosecuted. Soon to be, but never has.
He’s still out on bail and lives right next to an elementary school too… His back deck is 50 ft away from the schools swing sets…
