I know the positive for Taylor Mays has always been "hard hitter" and "freakish athlete" while the knocks on him have been his "pass coverage" and "missed tackles". If you watch any college highlights of him in youtube he always lowers his head and tries to level people with his shoulder, while not wrapping up and trying to actually tackle them....
....going in to the trade we knew that was what we were getting, but one has to assume at some point a player "gets it" and corrects their weaknesses - especially if they are so athletically gifted as him.
On that touchdown pass to Danario Alexander, we had 2x coverage on him with Mays deep helping the CB. But when Alexander went up for the catch, Mays made no play for the ball but reverted to his "lower my head and try to jack the guy with my shoulder" approach, on which he wiffed and Alexander caught the TD pass. Even if he had made contact, Alexander still would have caught the ball as Mays made no effort to distrupt the pass catching but only deliver a big hit after the ball had been caught.
I was as hopeful as anybody that bringing Mays in would be a good replacement for someone like Crocker, as safety has been a need for a while. But wow...!!!
Mays is 2 years out of USC and still not playing the ball or tackling properly. My hope that he could be the answer was not bolstered by that TD catch.
