Pro Football Focus Ranks Bengals Movers and Fallers

Pro Football Focus recently came out with it's Movers and Fallers edition of the AFC North. The guy they list as "Moving on Up" was defensive tackle Pat Sims who went from a -8.0 ranking in 2009 to a +1.1 ranking in 2010. Aside from some boneheaded decisions last year, which could have brought his stock crashing lower than Enron (that's right, I just made and Enron reference), I have to agree that his presence brought the defensive line that much closer to being a respectable unit. Though he's the least often mentioned of the Fisher Price Kids, one could argue that his improved play was equally important to that of Geno Atkins at the end of last season.
In completely un-astonishing fashion, Chad Ochocinco was listed under the "Had a Bad Year" category, dropping from a score of +8.8 to -2.9. PFF cited his increased # of drops and the decrease in his touchdown catches as the main reason for the drop. But as critical Bengals fans, we could probably point to a couple other factors as well: The 64 Women that he dated 2 at a time (who wouldn't be distracted by that?), Terrell Owens (If TO = Batman, then Ocho = Joker, not Robin), and finally I think we can blame Twitter which is the root of all evil in the world.
And for those of you who have been clamoring for more Bernard Scott, PFF agrees with you - they gave him the "Give this Guy More Snaps" award. For this selection, most hard core Bengals fans would have to give PFF the "No #!@%*&^ Kidding" award, but I suppose that for a national audience, this wasn't quite so obvious. Why this didn't happen during the season is beyond me, confounds all logic, tickles my mind grapes, was because Bratkowski was using his playbook as a coloring book. But, I digress. Scott proved, with a 4.9 yds/carry average, that at the very least he should be splitting carries with Benson next year.

My own personal selections would be Whitworth as a mover (who slid into the top 5 LTs in the league category IMHO), Carson Palmer for "Had a Bad Year" and for the sake of being creative, I'll give the "Give this Guy More Snaps" award to Anthony Collins, who filled in beautifully at RT at the end of last season.
Any guesses on who will movers and fallers next year?

My Guess
Jermaine Gresham will be a big mover… Andre Smith could be as well if he stays healthy. Also, Benson’s got nowhere to go but up if he comes back. fallers could be Dhani, or Roy Williams type
Benson could surprise people especially if they draft some interior lineman.
But I’m not sure that Dhani or Roy have all that far to fall next year. PFF didn’t rank Dhani very highly to begin with and Roy’s been so injury prone, that it’s hard to imagine him rising much.
Reggie Nelson could be riser next year though at the S spot, and MJ could make an impact as well.

well we could all learn a lesson from Carson
about sticking with it…, about doing whats right for you
Pat Sims and Geno Atkins
Is why I say, if we don’t get Fairley at #4. We don’t need to draft a DT.

Agreed.
We snag Fairley because he’s a major upgrade, but he doesn’t represent a burning need. So if we get him awesome. I’d be stoked for sure. If not, that’s ok, cause it should mean that AJ Green is there. AJ Green, a good grab because he’s a signifigant upgrade to our WR Corps. If we don’t get either of these guys, then we move on to the next best, but no reaching needed in the first.
Sure. Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
If Marvin Austin somehow slips to the 3rd I want him.
Other than him in the 3rd (and 3rd only) or Fairley in the first, I wouldn’t pull the trigger on any DTs this year.

If this is the plan Benson needs to go. He’ll become disgruntled if he’s not getting the ball an average 20 times a game. Mark my words. Sign him back and split carriers with Scott and you’ll see a very unhappy cry baby.
Sims almost as important as Atkins?
Sims looked far better than Atkins in my book. Many, many times over the last 6 games or so I said “whoah, who’s that slamming through the line and getting into the backfield so fast?!?!” and every time it was Sims. Yeah, one of those times was on a hard count to give the Saints an easy TD, but every other time it was awesome.
We still need a big, broad DT that occupies a couple linemen to free up the linebackers and makes it almost impossible to run up the middle, like Shaun Rogers only not a headcase.
+1000
Sims also had to carry on a run-stopping role whereas Atkins really only focused on rushing.

B. Scott
Gruden will actually use him. Maybe he’ll even line up as a WR..
I’m so glad Brat is gone.

i'm hoping we see that ALOT
maybe even just more designed screens for Scott

B Scott was actually a good pass catching back in college.
Ahh, the possibilities are endless without Brat.

Should be noted
that Benson is an underrated pass catcher. More yards per catch and per target than Scott.

Not that I think he's a better actual pass catcher than Scott,
just something to think about.

Ridiculous theory
More yards per catch by a yd yet he he is about 15-20% lower on completion rate with Carson. Benson is a below average receiving back while Carson to Scott is the higest connect rate for Palmer. and if you want to go by your yards per reception than explain Benson’s 3.5 yds per carry 7 fumbles – NFL’s worst -
Scott 0 fumbles on 61 carries 4.9 per carry
benson 7 on 321. – 3.5 per carry

That is interesting.
I might chalk it up to attempts more than anything though. Benson had 38 targets on the year and caught 28 of them (73% caught). Scott only had 13 targets on the year (probably not a big enough sample), but caught 11 of them (85%).
Benson had a higher yards per catch, but Scott caught more balls. My feeling though is that Scott is probably the better pass catcher.
Fight Bengals Fatalism!
I can't wait.
I’d like to see him play a bit of slot WR like Reggie Bush, just to mess with the defense. I’m hoping Gruden is good at using him as a hybrid playmaker, just like how the Saints use Bush.

Movers/Fallers
They need to come up with a better name for movers because falling is technically moving.
D. Jones will be falling as he is declining from lack of youth.
Gresham, Simpson and Scott will be big movers on offense.
Atkins, Dunlap and MJ will be big movers on defense.
I would argue that because Ocho ended at -2 that he will probably be a mover as well. He sucked this year but I don’t expect him to be as bad again.
"I gotta show em' how to eat right man, that's all...I got all five food groups. Pancakes, sausage-egg McMuffin, cinnamon roll, large orange juice... I just be juiced all day."
Dunlap could actually be a faller IMO
If we don’t produce another sack artist opposite him. Whether thats Odom or Bowers, I don’t care, I just don’t want teams keying in on what he’s doing…
I wouldn't rule out Quinn either.
If he gets a ton of bench reps at the combine and shows he’s strong enough to stop the run as a DE, he could be a good option for us to play opposite Dunlap.
"I bet that sex Bengals fan is really pissed now." -DT3428
Sorry but I think MJ compliments Dunlap well on the other side.
Remember that is when Dunlap came alive, when MJ got more playing time at DE.
MJ has to put up some #s next year or they'll have to consider replacing him.
I like him a lot, and he’s played really great in spurts, but that’s not enough by itself. If they give him a full year at DE, I think he’ll rack up 6-8 sacks, a handful of deflections and some forced fumbles.
Fight Bengals Fatalism!
I'll root for MJ a lot too
I really like him as a player and hopefully he can be a force along with Dunlap for years.
So how does that make you feel about Bowers as a prospect?
I know you’ve been a supporter of his in the past.
Fight Bengals Fatalism!
I dunno...
This team was still almost last in the league in sacks last year… I like MJ best as a 3rd down specialist, bowers is probably a more complete prospect.
I went back and counted the sacks from weeks 12-16
and the Bengals racked up 17 sacks during that stretch (12 of them versus division opponents). I don’t know what they did, but they figured something out during that stretch. In general, I think that a little more talent on the line could only help, but they might be closer than most people think.

He isn't really a three-down guy in my opinion.
If Odom or Geathers can come back around and back him up well, that will be fine. But if not, we need someone to spell with him because he tends to overexert himself in a couple downs and he needs to sub out quite a bit.
"I bet that sex Bengals fan is really pissed now." -DT3428
What? He did it at the end of last year and was good against the run and pass.
Odom wasn’t a factor last year and Geathers plays on the same side as Dunlap for a rotation. Get rid of Odom and Tank then draft Quinn or another DE to take Odoms place. We don’t need him on IR again. We could shore up a lot of money getting rid of those 2.
I heard that Dunlaps
got the full time gig already for next year. Hopefully Geathers is nothing more than a backup the rest of his career.
Dunlap earned it, that's for sure
Does anybody know how much Geathers in making next year? Whatever it is it’s probably too much for a backup…..

Joe Reedy -4 He has been so useless since Henry passed.

u guess PPF did not rate Ced -
like most they have to check it over 10 times to make sure they are reading the numbers correctly. By far the biggest one season declinel on the team. Cliffdive ?
Or because it is movers and fallers and he ran sideways in 2010.
The worst running team in the NFL wants to run more ? meh
he was rated at like -1.8 or something like that (the rating system is confusing, but their research is pretty thorough)
He did drop off quite a bit, but not as much as our friend Ocho.
Fight Bengals Fatalism!
His drop of -1.8 is only half
Just the fact that he cries for the ball is a disease for the Bengals. He has gotta go asap.
Addition by subtraction. Great mentality by all the young talent to excell and they all look up to Carson, who needs the divas out.
It will be an ejoyable team with Carson’s leadership on Offense, Whitworth on Defense and new blood with Gruden. More balance as a unit without Ocho and Ced.
With that said I have the utmost respect for what Ocho and Ced have done in Cinncy, but time to move on.
