Source: Jay Gruden to Take Bengals Offensive Coordinator Job

Photo

This just in:

PFT is reporting that a league source has said that Jay Gruden, the current head coach of UFL's Viginia Destroyers, is set to be the Bengals new offensive coordinator.

A league source tells us that Jay Gruden, currently the head coach of the Virginia Destroyers of the UFL, will become the next offensive coordinator of the Bengals.  The source says the deal is done.

We’ve yet to obtain confirmation of that fact.

If you think the name sounds familiar, it's because it is. Jay Gruden is the younger brother of former Raiders and Buccaneers coach and current Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden.

We will update you as the story develops.

being born in Tampa Bay

The Bucs have always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I remember when Jay was an Offensive Assistant when his brother Jon was HC. They ran a west coast passing offense and a power run game. Always had a blocking TE and carried 2 FB’s (Alstott & Jameel Cook). Brad Johnson had his best years under them. Jay is fiery like Jon, but seems like a better people person. Jay also played QB and worked with QBs when with the Bucs.

was a qb

At louiville, and won 4 arena bowl titles as a qb. And from what I’ve read seems to be a good offensive mind. Never been a coach in the nfl outside of being an offensive assistent to his brother in tampa. I couldn’t find anything on what type of offense he runs or anything. I did read brooks bollinger was his qb for his afl team, and said he was one of the best offensive minds he’s had as a coach. I guess its worth a try, could turn out to be a great pickup.

by JCompton41 on Feb 2, 2011 10:56 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He was former coach Jim Haslett’s offensive coordinator last year when the Tuskers averaged a league-best 30.5 points per game and went a perfect 6-0 during the regular season. In nine seasons in the Arena League, Gruden’s offenses were positively pyrotechnic, helping the Orlando Predators advance to four ArenaBowls and win two championships.

"helping the Orlando Predators advance to four ArenaBowls and win two championships."

Regardless of previous coaching and pedigree, if you are going to hire someone out of the UFL it’s nice to see that attached to the name.

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

by C Byers on Feb 2, 2011 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

Hey he was able to turn our crap into something useful and productive. That’s what Hue did in Oakland last year. If he does that here, even the stupidities of our front office and scouting staff might no longer be enough to completely destroy the team…

by FriarBob on Feb 3, 2011 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

Let's hold judgment until we see how much Gruden is being paid.

I know I’m an eternal skeptic with this organization, but I have a feeling he was hired for one reason: he was cheap.

by FordhamRam on Feb 2, 2011 11:04 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Thing is we could have promoted within for cheaper. Seems like a legitimate hire. A risky hire, which is quite shocking. This mist have been marvin’s choice – does Marvin have any relAtionship to Jon?

Ad for getting scouts… Might crap my pants.

by C Byers on Feb 2, 2011 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

Apparently the only reason he didn't go to the NFL was because he liked his job in Orlando.

He supposedly has a brilliant offensive mind and runs a high flying west coast offense with power running. Can Palmer be successful in that system? Let’s hope so. Maybe he changes the system?

by ddbumpus on Feb 2, 2011 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

F*** Palmer

I don’t care if Palmer can be success in his system.

Palmer’s not the future. And I want someone to tell me that they think having Palmer next year is going to give us a legitimate chance at winning the super bowl
I don’t want Palmer(or any player) to dictate what happens on the coaching staff. Even more so when it’s a time we need to rebuild not try to appease an aging franchise QB (with 0 playoff wins) with a shoddy medical history.

If we get Jay, I want Jay to go out and run his offense the best way he can. And I want him this draft to get whatever QB and players HE think can run his system. If he thinks Carson can great. If not draft a guy who might be able to, or find the FA who can. I

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

by C Byers on Feb 3, 2011 2:21 AM EST up reply actions

how much more though?

it went from 1% to 4%?
I’m not saying a mildly better chance.

I want you to tell me with him under center we’re for sure a guaranteed Super Bowl contender. I don’t think he honestly gives a better chance of winning thens sticking a FA QB like Brunell or Garcia.

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

A good article around Jay Gruden:

This describes what he is:

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2010-08-28/sports/os-bianchi-tbd-0829-20100828_1_florida-tuskers-jay-gruden-love-coaching

He has everything you’re looking for in a coach: Offensive imagination, innovation, charisma, even that magical last name. His brother Jon is the former coach who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl championship and now, as part of the " ESPN Monday Night Football" telecast, is arguably TV’s most popular pro football analyst.

by ddbumpus on Feb 2, 2011 11:05 PM EST reply actions

I got a little excited when I saw the last name.

I came down from Cloud 9 to Cloud 8 when I saw the differences in names but hot damn, this has a chance to be potentially brilliant. Fuck yes!

This seems like a good move for the franchise. We cant make moves to cater to carson. As much as I have been a carson supporter I don’t think he should dictate the moves this team makes.

by JCompton41 on Feb 2, 2011 11:25 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Can we get a Kurt Warner clone?

Maybe he knows some offensive talent we can take?

by ddbumpus on Feb 2, 2011 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely.

There’s gotta be talent down there….there’s always talent in places you wouldn’t expect. I think it’s a surprise hire that we were risky – it could be awesome, or it could crash and burn; a good risk though.

by ddbumpus on Feb 2, 2011 11:32 PM EST up reply actions

yeah

I like the risk. I don’t think its any more risky than getting jim haurbauh as the head coach, or any other hotshot college coach.

Look at Miami's sack machine

Maybe I’m overreacting. You just don’t hear of many NFL teams hiring UFL coaches as offensive coordinators…

Still not a crook!

by TrickyD26 on Feb 2, 2011 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

True.

But I think it’s becoming more popular. He worked for Jim Haslett before he went to the Redskins as the DC. He also had coaching success as the head coach. This is like the minor leagues of football…I’d say it’s a step up from a random college hire.

by ddbumpus on Feb 2, 2011 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

Do you know any examples of UFL coaches getting jobs in the NFL? Not trying to be a smart ass, sanguinely curious.

Still not a crook!

by TrickyD26 on Feb 2, 2011 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

Jim Haslett

He was the Head coach in the UFL and Gruden was the OC for him, before Haslett went on to be the DC for the Redskins. From that point Gruden took the reins as the head coach. He sounds like he knows what he’s talking about.

- Dennis Green

At least some former NFL caliber coaches.

by ddbumpus on Feb 2, 2011 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but Haslett had plenty of NFL experience before even going to the UFL. Not saying he’s a bad coach, but he already knew the NFL game. Jay was an offensive assistant for six years under his brother and never got any other NFL offers.

Still not a crook!

by TrickyD26 on Feb 2, 2011 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

I don't disagree.

But he’s worked for NFL types, been in the NFL with his brother, and is supposed to be a very bright offensive mind that runs a high powered pro offense.

As for other offers, I’ve seen some articles mentioning that he’s had chances to come to the NFL or coaching ranks but was happy in his position and wanted to stay. Not sure why THIS was his desired stop, but hopefully it works out! Seems like he’s a bright, capable coach.

With this job, If u make any improvements at all it’ll be hailed as masterful coaching by the OC. if he makes any improvement he’ll be regarded as a miracle worker.

minor leagues are nice

since our scouts are not numerous, we can add in one more filter so they don’t have quite as much work

by bill schwab on Feb 2, 2011 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

i agree

Its at very least no different than hiring from college.

by JCompton41 on Feb 2, 2011 11:32 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Idk about that.

I’d rank bringing in a Big 10, Pac-10, Big 12 or SEC coordinator a little higher than a UFL.

Sure if it was some dude from who gives a f*** U located in nowhere montana I would be upset. But if it’s a coach from a bigger program i’d say its a step up.

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

by C Byers on Feb 2, 2011 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

I would say it depends.

I wouldn’t hire any coach in college, even SEC coaches, that specialize in the spread.

by FordhamRam on Feb 2, 2011 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

I think another advantage is that they coach players that pay to play.
