Source: Jay Gruden to Take Bengals Offensive Coordinator Job
This just in:
PFT is reporting that a league source has said that Jay Gruden, the current head coach of UFL's Viginia Destroyers, is set to be the Bengals new offensive coordinator.
A league source tells us that Jay Gruden, currently the head coach of the Virginia Destroyers of the UFL, will become the next offensive coordinator of the Bengals. The source says the deal is done.
We’ve yet to obtain confirmation of that fact.
If you think the name sounds familiar, it's because it is. Jay Gruden is the younger brother of former Raiders and Buccaneers coach and current Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden.
We will update you as the story develops.

jay gruden
lets pray he has the same influence on players his brother does
being born in Tampa Bay
The Bucs have always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I remember when Jay was an Offensive Assistant when his brother Jon was HC. They ran a west coast passing offense and a power run game. Always had a blocking TE and carried 2 FB’s (Alstott & Jameel Cook). Brad Johnson had his best years under them. Jay is fiery like Jon, but seems like a better people person. Jay also played QB and worked with QBs when with the Bucs.

was a qb
At louiville, and won 4 arena bowl titles as a qb. And from what I’ve read seems to be a good offensive mind. Never been a coach in the nfl outside of being an offensive assistent to his brother in tampa. I couldn’t find anything on what type of offense he runs or anything. I did read brooks bollinger was his qb for his afl team, and said he was one of the best offensive minds he’s had as a coach. I guess its worth a try, could turn out to be a great pickup.

He was former coach Jim Haslett’s offensive coordinator last year when the Tuskers averaged a league-best 30.5 points per game and went a perfect 6-0 during the regular season. In nine seasons in the Arena League, Gruden’s offenses were positively pyrotechnic, helping the Orlando Predators advance to four ArenaBowls and win two championships.
"helping the Orlando Predators advance to four ArenaBowls and win two championships."
Regardless of previous coaching and pedigree, if you are going to hire someone out of the UFL it’s nice to see that attached to the name.
Did Carson Palmer handcuff Mike Brown in a storage locker somewhere?
If they hire a few scouts I might die

Let's hold judgment until we see how much Gruden is being paid.
I know I’m an eternal skeptic with this organization, but I have a feeling he was hired for one reason: he was cheap.
by FordhamRam on Feb 2, 2011 11:04 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Thing is we could have promoted within for cheaper. Seems like a legitimate hire. A risky hire, which is quite shocking. This mist have been marvin’s choice – does Marvin have any relAtionship to Jon?
Ad for getting scouts… Might crap my pants.

Apparently the only reason he didn't go to the NFL was because he liked his job in Orlando.
He supposedly has a brilliant offensive mind and runs a high flying west coast offense with power running. Can Palmer be successful in that system? Let’s hope so. Maybe he changes the system?
F*** Palmer
I don’t care if Palmer can be success in his system.
Palmer’s not the future. And I want someone to tell me that they think having Palmer next year is going to give us a legitimate chance at winning the super bowl
I don’t want Palmer(or any player) to dictate what happens on the coaching staff. Even more so when it’s a time we need to rebuild not try to appease an aging franchise QB (with 0 playoff wins) with a shoddy medical history.
If we get Jay, I want Jay to go out and run his offense the best way he can. And I want him this draft to get whatever QB and players HE think can run his system. If he thinks Carson can great. If not draft a guy who might be able to, or find the FA who can. I
Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.
More of a chance than Dan LeFevour or any rookie QB
I’ll take it.
how much more though?
it went from 1% to 4%?
I’m not saying a mildly better chance.
I want you to tell me with him under center we’re for sure a guaranteed Super Bowl contender. I don’t think he honestly gives a better chance of winning thens sticking a FA QB like Brunell or Garcia.
Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.
in the ufl
He was a head coach there last don’t know if he called plays. Oc the year before.

GTFO is this shit serious, I guess all the good ones were snatched up or didn't want to come to this dumb of an organization.

LMAO
That’s great, because the first thing I think when something happens is that I need to update wikipedia.
A good article around Jay Gruden:
This describes what he is:
He has everything you’re looking for in a coach: Offensive imagination, innovation, charisma, even that magical last name. His brother Jon is the former coach who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl championship and now, as part of the " ESPN Monday Night Football" telecast, is arguably TV’s most popular pro football analyst.
Half of those platitudes are about his brother. Kind of like a bio of a current Bengal I know

I got a little excited when I saw the last name.
I came down from Cloud 9 to Cloud 8 when I saw the differences in names but hot damn, this has a chance to be potentially brilliant. Fuck yes!
It could be a part of MB's master plan to get Gruden as our HC next year.
If there’s anything he’s proven, it’s that he believes blood is thicker than tar.

The Bengals are now one step closer to joining the AFL
That 40 some million Mike Brown asked for.
Turning PBS into an arena stadium :)
Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.
I Dont Think Its Enough
To bring Carson or Benson back, but this guy does bring some punch back to a stale offense, lets just hope his punches arent name “Judy”.
i dont care if they come back.
This seems like a good move for the franchise. We cant make moves to cater to carson. As much as I have been a carson supporter I don’t think he should dictate the moves this team makes.

Can we get a Kurt Warner clone?
Maybe he knows some offensive talent we can take?
that would be a edge for scouting in the ufl
by JCompton41 on Feb 2, 2011 11:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Definitely.
There’s gotta be talent down there….there’s always talent in places you wouldn’t expect. I think it’s a surprise hire that we were risky – it could be awesome, or it could crash and burn; a good risk though.
yeah
I like the risk. I don’t think its any more risky than getting jim haurbauh as the head coach, or any other hotshot college coach.
by JCompton41 on Feb 2, 2011 11:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Look at Miami's sack machine
Where’d he come from? This is a GREAT move! Maybe he can bring his brother in for some good ole “Marvin Lewis Strategy Talk”

Back to the future
Have we come full circle? Could this guy re-invent us like Sam Wyche did in the 80’s.
The description above certainly reads like what they said about Wyche when the team hired him way back then.
He has everything you’re looking for in a coach: Offensive imagination, innovation, charisma
Maybe I’m overreacting. You just don’t hear of many NFL teams hiring UFL coaches as offensive coordinators…
Still not a crook!
True.
But I think it’s becoming more popular. He worked for Jim Haslett before he went to the Redskins as the DC. He also had coaching success as the head coach. This is like the minor leagues of football…I’d say it’s a step up from a random college hire.
Do you know any examples of UFL coaches getting jobs in the NFL? Not trying to be a smart ass, sanguinely curious.
Still not a crook!
Jim Haslett
He was the Head coach in the UFL and Gruden was the OC for him, before Haslett went on to be the DC for the Redskins. From that point Gruden took the reins as the head coach. He sounds like he knows what he’s talking about.
Yeah, but Haslett had plenty of NFL experience before even going to the UFL. Not saying he’s a bad coach, but he already knew the NFL game. Jay was an offensive assistant for six years under his brother and never got any other NFL offers.
Still not a crook!
I don't disagree.
But he’s worked for NFL types, been in the NFL with his brother, and is supposed to be a very bright offensive mind that runs a high powered pro offense.
As for other offers, I’ve seen some articles mentioning that he’s had chances to come to the NFL or coaching ranks but was happy in his position and wanted to stay. Not sure why THIS was his desired stop, but hopefully it works out! Seems like he’s a bright, capable coach.
Mike not having to pay Palmer
that frees up $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Flying is as simple as throwing yourself at the ground and missing
Yeah, I suppose I can see a bright side but it’s still really weird. I mean, who would turn down NFL jobs to hold out for Cincinnati?
Still not a crook!
With this job, If u make any improvements at all it’ll be hailed as masterful coaching by the OC. if he makes any improvement he’ll be regarded as a miracle worker.
by ddbumpus on Feb 3, 2011 12:40 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
minor leagues are nice
since our scouts are not numerous, we can add in one more filter so they don’t have quite as much work
Flying is as simple as throwing yourself at the ground and missing
i agree
Its at very least no different than hiring from college.
by JCompton41 on Feb 2, 2011 11:32 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Idk about that.
I’d rank bringing in a Big 10, Pac-10, Big 12 or SEC coordinator a little higher than a UFL.
Sure if it was some dude from who gives a f*** U located in nowhere montana I would be upset. But if it’s a coach from a bigger program i’d say its a step up.
Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.
I would say it depends.
I wouldn’t hire any coach in college, even SEC coaches, that specialize in the spread.
Bama arkansas etc
spread coaches no way regardless.
I was more saying Paul Chryst at Wisconsin
Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.
Ack!
Wisconsin’s offense is like watching, well, Big Ten basketball- or paint dry.
by IgnatiusJReilly on Feb 2, 2011 11:54 PM EST up reply actions
i guess i can see why
But I don’t understand why the the just because he’s in the ufl he shouldn’t get a shot at an offensive cordinator job. Its not like he was an 8th grade football coach or something.

Dan Lefevour
Sounds like this Gruden would be perfect to groom Lefevour should Palmer not come back.
sounds like a good move
i cant believe wiki already has him listed
by BoomerEsiason'sLoveChild on Feb 2, 2011 11:25 PM EST reply actions
LOL.
Wiki gives the experts the information.
Also, here’s a youtube video of Gruden talking about random stuff, but most important his offensive style.
This guy seems like the opposite of Brat
1. He has personality
2. He has energy
3. He appears intelligent.
4. He looks like a players coach.
I love the move as of day one.
This is our year!
Mike is the d-bag chief

And Gruden/Zim are the older brothers that beat you up.
So….Gruzim? or Zimden?
Zimden rolls off the tounge better

Nice, though I don't think he cares about public opinion either.
Just as long as he collects his birthright pension, he’s satisfied.
lol

I heard the wiki was a mistake
but Mike Brown read the article, thought it was a swell idea and made the hire after it had already been posted.
He called me a baboon, he thinks I'm his wife.
Ruh-roh
Jay Gruden is to John as Dave Shula is to Don as Mike Brown is to Paul?
Seriously, this is pretty damned cool.

So I just learned that Belichick does everything he does without an offensive or defensive coordinator.
That’s insane.
He's better than Josh McDaniels. He's a solid hire if it happens.
Very very very excited. I hope it’s not just MB doing his best to get me to open my wallet.
Willing to give him a chance
Of course in Bengaldom we have been inundated with failed sons and brothers of good coaches and players. So of course we are suspicious.
What is it with Cincinnati and the entertainment world
We go from the TOcho Show to Chucky 2…Atleast this move will turn out a little better..Chucky Jr is going to run circles around the NFC West next year
