Question From A Panthers Fan
Hey Bengals fans! I'm from Cat Scratch Reader, and I have a few questions to ask you guys. Carolina is in dire need of a corner, and i believe that they'll target one in free agency. I went over the list of FA cb's, and I spotted none other than South Carolina's own Johnathan Joseph. What are the pros/cons to Joseph's play? Is he likely to get either tagged/signed long term? What do you guys think about Joseph personally? Does he lead by example? Are his injuries a problem? Thanks!

Expect us not to let him walk
He’s an elite talent.. when HEALTHY.. but the issue is if we have an 18 week season.. he may only be able to get you 10-11 games healthy.
Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.
Frankly
I’m a little surprised that he hasn’t already been tagged but I shouldn’t be. This is the Bengals we’re talking about. As for JonJo, he’s a fast, athletic corner, with the instincts not to bite on a pump fake or play-action and, for a corner, actually provides decent help in the running game. Aside from his seeming injury bug- most minor and sometimes nagging, his only real flaw is that he doesn’t have the greatest hands. Though he’s improved over the last couple years, it’s not unusual to see balls with pick written all over them bouncing harmlessly on the turf after a trip through his mitts. Still, when he’s healthy, he and Leon Hall make a pair of corners I wouldn’t really trade for anyone else in the league.

NO YOU CANNOT DATE MY EXGIRLFRIEND!
Ooops Sorry. Lets put it this way. If J Joe goes somewheres it will be a sad day in Cincy. He’s a top notch CB.

He's good enough that...
If the Bengals stupidly let him walk, I’d be happy to see him end up playing for an NFC team that we won’t see again until 2014.
His downside, if anything, is that he doesn’t lockdown that well in the red zone against big receivers who can muscle in front of him. Besides that, he’s athletic, fast and has awareness. He’s not the flashiest, but his hands are good enough to pick off balls that are thrown at him, and he breaks up throws that looked to be well out of reach. He’s a true competitor, and probably the best player on our team (though at CB, I wouldn’t say most valuable). Trust me when I say that you want him.

Pros-
Only 27 years old
Great, A+ Athlete
Good route recognition
great at zone and man
Will help in run support
never gets beat on comebacks
Seems like a good guy
Cons-
Nagging injuries
will get a big deal in free agency
Hands are only OK
Not great in Red-Zone
Overall- He’s a top 10 CB in the NFL that can lock down one side of the field on any given sunday. Any team that needs a CB (and cap room) should go after J.Joe

Pretty nice scouting report.
And for the Panthers fan; you might think he’s exaggerating with the phrase “top 10 CB,” but he isn’t. J-Joe is a true lockdown corner.

nailed it
I might change “Hands are only OK” to “Can’t catch a cold”, otherwise I think you’re spot-on.
And in all fairness, his hands have gotten a lot better as he’s progressed. His rookie season it seemed he was always getting into the right spot to have the ball hit him in the hands, then it promptly hit the turf.
I remember him dropping 3 or 4 picks in one game in his rookie year.
His hands have improved a lot, though.

JJo
has huge upside. He can still improve his injuries should not carry over further in his career.
Rarely gets beat, excellent atheletic skills, no problems just hustle from him. He had to face a very tough schedule since he has been in the NFl and still managed to shut teams down left and right. Who ever lands him is going to upgrade their coverage a few notches guaranteed (lockout 67.77% chance).
The worst running team in the NFL wants to run more ? meh
Would hate to lose him…….he’s the type of guy you never hear anything bad about. Seems to be a real “team” guy on defense and a leader (when healthy of course). Would hate to see him in anything but stripes……….

Health is an issue, but he's worth it.
The dude is a freak. He belongs up there with the best corners in the game. Let’s put it this way; you can see that the entire defense was different when he was in the game versus when he was injured.

This is why we are constantly rebuilding (if he walks I mean) because we are not willing to pay guys who are central to our future plans. So if you just keep letting them leave over and over again………..you are rebuilding…….again. I’m not saying re-sign every decent player to crazy money, but we have a good CB tandem right now, why brake that up? Draft help for the DL and Safety position and let JJoe and LHall lock down the outside.

Good Story On JJoe
I can’t remember where I heard this, but it was first hand. Sorry getting old. But, I hear JJoe was the best athlete to ever come through his High School. I heard he was a freak and would be the best at what ever he did. On this particular occasion I hear he was walking around the batting cages during Baseball season at his High School and was getting harrassed by the Baseball coach and was giving it back as well. Good nature, nothing malicious. The coach said “If it’s so easy, grab a stick and try to hit the ball.” They cranked the machine up even faster and JJoe grabbed a bat and helmet and went into the cage. He hit every pitch with authority. Totally shut the coach up and he walked away like, “Is that what you had in mind”. I also hear he is a great guy, coachable, and respectful. I will be pissed if we lose him, but considering MB, it’s a given. He may drop his share of interceptions, but so does Ike Taylor and they both can support the run and shut down a number one receiver. Interceptions get you the Pro Bowl votes and playing in Cincy doesn’t help.
