Getting to know Jay (videos)

Note: The first half is about Jay Gruden the Human Being, if you just want to see the coach, football talk starts around 3 minutes in.

It's a blast playing for coach Gruden. He's a great coach. He's got great passion for the game. He's got a great knowledge of the game, especially the QB position. - Brooks Bollinger

We're running power right at your ass. You gotta go a little faster, start your cadence while they're walking up.

We are balanced we can run the ball we'll be able to throw the ball we'll have a variety of formations and motions, try to keep the defense off balance. My whole idea offensively is to try to do what we're good at and to try to get the ball in the hands of the best players.

Galen Stone is a Tight End that we worked out in Atlanta that we loved his athleticism so we're going to give him a chance to get the ball in his hands down the field and see what happens.

Everybody get a piece of this ass whoopin'.

I doin't have enough bandwidth at work to play the videos

but just the quotes you provided is getting me excited. And I just bumped this post into the recommended column with the third rec.

TIME OUT: Odell Thurman sighting

did anyone notice Odell in the second (and possibly others which I haven’t gotten to yet) video, smiling in front of Jay? Does he not look like he’s ready to come back and give you a jittery sense that he’s changed?

Is there a possibility Jay will convince Marvin to bring him back?

okay, he's in the first and last videos as well

front and center whenever Gruden is talking to the team. You knwo what this reminds me of? That famous Marvin lockerroom speech where Marvin blasting everyone and Chris Henry is kneeling right in front of him, listening intently. Watch it again and tell me you don’t see any similarity between the two.

Odell listens so much

because this is the highest level of football he will play anymore :P

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

haha, that might be the case

but I’m encouraged by the positive and seemingly hard-working demeanor he has. If he was walking around, looking mopey and acting like the world owed him something (as is the case with many fall-from-grace athletes), I wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about him.

I’d love to hear what Gruden’s thoughts are on him. And you know there’s goign to be a discussion about Thurman between Gruden and Lewis.

Dude won't pass a drug test..

And hasn’t applied for reinstatement since the 08 season..

I think he’s gone.. for good.

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

by C Byers on Feb 5, 2011 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

show us where he's been unable to pass a drug test in the last 3 years.

If you are referring to when he was with the Bengals in 05-07, then let it go.
All reports that have came out recently about him, is that he has been doing what he needs to and that he’s ready to come back to the NFL. Hell, I think I even recall him being named UFL defensive player of the year last year. Or something of that nature.
As for gone for good, I wouldn’t put money on that. I just think the NFL is making him go over and above the requirements needed to show them that he is ready to come back and not mess up again. The NFL is being skeptical and rightfully so. IMHO, I still think he has one last shot and he’ll get it. If not with the Bengals, then with another team.

by WHYUS!! on Feb 5, 2011 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

Let it go.

“June 2, 2008, Sports Illustrated reported Thurman, recently cut by the Bengals, had failed his second drug test in three seasons. Four days later, ESPN reported Thurman had been suspended by the NFL indefinitely. As part of the ruling, he could not apply for reinstatement until after the 2008 season”
So i was referring to 08 ;)

He’s been eligible for 2 yrs now.
No team has gone to his side saying he’s our guy. Not even a CFL team was interested in him he had to go to the UFL. Why is it out of 32 teams, not even a team like detroit who is in desperate need of a LB NOT want Thurman? Because the talent he had/has, Odell has not won a UFL weekly defender award or of the year. Guys like Keiwan Ratliff (week 8) and Eric Henderson (week 3) while the Defender of the year was Isaiah Truffant(now with the eagles)
I’m an avid watcher of the UFL (Loco fan) and whenever I watched Odell play he looked solid at the level of play he’s at. He didn’t look like an NFL player stuck in the UFL, he looked like a UFL linebacker.

We may need a RB. Maurice Clarett plays for Iowa if you want him ;)

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

Ahhhhh you got me idk why I thought Iowa

I thought country.. lol and corn.

I have to disagree with you

1) He didn’t even play 3 years in the NFL. He played 2 years and going into his 3rd season is when he failed his 2nd drug test. He was given a year suspension for his 2nd violation. So it’s only a year suspension and not a lifetime.
2) There has been several reports that even here at the CJ that Odell Thurman has been looking good in the UFL could be a possibility in being nominated for DPY.
3) Reports have it that there are several coaches that were going to bat for him. Reported here on the CJ. Look it up in the archives.
4) With all his screw ups in the past he was probably told he needs to prove more than what he has done to be let back in to the NFL. Remember he broke someones jaw too while he was suspended in 08, that wasn’t ruled on by the NFL. I think this plays a lot into the NFL and the 32 teams and whats going on.
5) I think the teams don’t know where the NFL stands with him and the NFL doesn’t have to release that info b/c he’s not in the NFL right now, or until the NFL tells him he can apply for reinstatement. Nobody knows when he can apply for reinstatement. it was said 1 year and yet no team or any media oddity can say for sure. It’s been well over that year and he hasn’t even applied for it. That doesn’t make since, does it? If he’s eligable why not apply anyways?
With this being said, I think he still has a chance Unlike the Maurice Clarett comparison you gave. Clarett was in jail for 2 years if not longer and wasn’t as good of a prospect as Thurman was/is. And as an avid watcher of the UFL, that doesn’t make you a specialist on who’s good enough to make the NFL teams. I’ll leave that up to the scouts that actually do that for a living. Because Clarett wasn’t good enough back then he was cut, but Odell was good enough when he was drafted and was starting.

by WHYUS!! on Feb 5, 2011 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

youch guess someones not familiar with sarcasm.

Listen. Did you watch one down of Odell this season? Tell me that.
Because he didn’t stand out at all. KEIWAN RATLIFF won an award for his defensive play. Odell didn’t. The thing was guys Ratliff looked like they could play at a higher level, he looked as a big fish in a small pond. As many other talents in the league who had NFL careers. Odell looked as if he was at the right level and didn’t accell. If the kid had enough talent he would have played in the CFL, but not even the CFL want’s him.

Odell is not coming back to the NFL. Also the Jaw thing was alleged and in Sandusky, ohio while he seemed to have an alibi being in georgia around that time. So if your going to give me an example. Fact Check ;)

That’s great coaches in the UFL want to go up to bat for him, because it’s fallen on deaf ears. If he was worth the risk, some team would’ve been after him by now. 2 years is ample time for someone to say “wow theres a big talent down the Florida, we need to try to get him up here.” There’s been no body linked to him.

And with Clarett, I just went sarcastic and saying theres another troubled talent for you too.

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

by C Byers on Feb 5, 2011 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

And I went all sarcastic in saying that

I’ll let the scouts be scouts and do their jobs and let you do, well, be a sarcastic fan when someone disagrees with you.
Look, all I’m saying is nobody actually knows what the deal is with Thurman and why hasn’t he even applied for reinstatement? It cannot hurt him at all if he does. There has to be a reason, so I think there still is a chance of him coming back to the NFL. Even if you don’t think so. There has been several reports on him so I’ll keep my hopes up for the guy b/c I actually have seen the talent he possesses. Remember he’s still considered young too, he’s what 27ish.
If you can come up with a good reason (facts) on why he hasn’t applied for reinstatement yet when he’s eligible to do so right now, then I’ll wait to see if he’ll be back. Not just make the claim he won’t and is finished. There are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes that you or I will never hear about and will never know about.

give him a chance to get the ball in his hands down the field and see what happens. Down the field is the key words here…

I know, right?

We might actually get to see our stud TE run some seam routes. I never thought I’d see the day.

For both Gresham and Coffman.

I envision plays for Coffman similar to what he had in college and was so successful with.

by ddbumpus on Feb 5, 2011 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

When I saw him at the end of the year he looked considerably bulked up.

He may be a threat as a blocker as well now, if technique isn’t an issue.
