Bengals Officially Announce Jay Gruden As Team's Offensive Coordinator

On Thursday the Bengals officially announced the hiring of Jay Gruden as the team's new offensive coordinator. Here are quotes of the hiring, provided by the Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy.

Marvin Lewis:

"We are excited to have Jay join us and give us a new direction offensively. He has proven himself a consistent winner in a variety of positions and has earned tremendous respect in the coaching profession. He’s going to provide the energy and attacking style that will best suit our offensive skill players and quarterback."

"This is something I wanted to get right, to take the time to make the best decision and I appreciate the support I got from Mike Brown in the process. The offense is where we need to show improvement, and when we do, we’ll show that this team is ready to win the division again like we did just a year ago. Our defense is strong and still improving, and one thing we did in 2010 was to develop a number of very promising new players. Jay is a key addition to this process."

Jay Gruden:

"I expect great things with the Bengals. I intend on bringing a great attitude and work ethic. We’ll build off the strength this offense has developed and add a system to challenge everyone in the building. I thank Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown for this opportunity, and I look forward to working with a great offensive staff."

Interesting

How Marvin added the “and quarterback” to the end of that sentence. Also is he bringing in his own positional coaches or is he using the ones already here?

Haven't even had the Draft yet

and call me crazy/stupid but I’m already drinking the koolaid, and I’m real excited for next year (compared to how depressing the last 3 months have been)

i don't think it's fair to call him pass happy

he was coaching in pass happy leagues, there’s a difference. there’s really no way to know what kind of scheme he is going to run until he gets something out there on the field, but i like his enthusiasm and the little clip that someone posted yesterday of him on the sidelines showed someone with a LOT more personality than Brat

also a plus is that in these smaller leagues he is used to a much smaller organizational structure where he probably had a lot more player development responsibilities…..which, let’s be honest, he is going to have to show here as well

Sorry.... Hit the wrong button...

I feel good about him. I just thought it was strange bringing in a guy from a pass happy arena football league if you want to run the football. I am not going to condemn him, and I think he may very well kick some ass. I like his attitude…

MIKE BROWN STEP DOWN!!!

I think it will be a balanced offense

Word has it that Jay Gruden runs a west coast offense and power run game like his brother Jon Gruden. Dont b suprised if we draft a running style fullback or another big size bell cow running back.

Gotta love Wikipedia..
Gruden was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals in February2011. Jay also has a connection with a mystery QB that he is planning on bringing to Cincinnati with him. This is a local boy named Dominic Randolph ( St. X) who has been the Patriot Player of the Year the last 3 years. If Carson leaves it will only help the worst franchise in all of sports, at this time next year Cincinnati will have Domininc Randolph as the starting QB, Jay Gruden as HC and Jon Gruden as GM…… wake up people Mike Brown will never hire a GM so keep wishing and all you Cincinnati fans, FIND A NEW TEAM! GO PACKERS!!!2

==|Jon]] was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

otherwise, his resume reads pretty well aside from the fact that the vast majority of his experience is in arena football instead of the NFL. He’s been extremely successful, and maintained it for a long time. His brief time in the NFL as a lower-ranking offensive assistant was successful as well. I’m exicted about this.

that was updated today then

b/c I checked his wiki first thing 9 am central time when i got to work today and that paragraph read

“Gruden was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals in February 2011.”

—JON was the head coach of the Raiders and Bucs.

Sounds like Marvin made the hire

Maybe Mike did give him a lil more power

I'm glad you noticed that too.

This was a really telling hire. Just listen to ML:

This is something I wanted to get right, to take the time to make the best decision and I appreciate the support I got from Mike Brown in the process
.

Then Gruden thanks Marvin first, then thanks Brown.

I think Marvin got some of the control he wanted after all.

This is our year!

Hmmm... stawberry flavored

I’m on board. He seems like a smart, successful winner that should give this team a shot in the arm of energy.

More kool aid please

Well this is great news I'm glad we have a fresh ambitious mind for our offense now.

However I love how Marvin and Mikey’s goal is to win the division. No words of competing for a championship. If we won the division and went one and done in the playoffs every year that will satisfy Mike Browns standards.

Looks like it...

But let’s make the playoffs then worry about next steps! The players won’t be satisfied with just making the playoffs I know!!

Well we can't afford fan favorite Jon Gruden.. So lets sign a cheap look a like :)

Mike Brown must sincerely believe football success is something that’s passed down through a family tree.. Anyone remember Don Shula?

by JamesShively on Feb 3, 2011 2:34 PM EST reply actions

This guy has had success on his own.

There’s no reason to be down on him at this point. He’s the dynamic/fresh coordinator we’ve all been asking for.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Feb 3, 2011 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

I know I'm just amazed at how Mikeys track record should have made this an obvious candidate

I’m excited about having him here. Personally I think the WCO with a power run game is the most exciting type of football to watch. I also think that the Bengals style and character has had the most success under this type of system.

by JamesShively on Feb 3, 2011 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. Brown does like his pedigrees.

But I do think this sounds like it’s been more Marvin’s call than Brown’s.

This is our year!

His wiki is now saying upon being hired by the Bengals he's began talks with the Browns to get Jake Delhomme
Gruden was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals in February 2011, and immidiately began talks with the Browns to make Jake Delhomme his starting QB. 2

God I hope this isn’t true..

by JamesShively on Feb 3, 2011 2:42 PM EST reply actions

Well if Carson can't play on the West Coast.

Maybe he’ll be excited to play in an offense named after it and invented here..

by JamesShively on Feb 3, 2011 2:49 PM EST reply actions

this may seem like a dumb question...

but is he the son of jon gruden? i would just look it up but i dont have time at work lol.

by Whodey85 on Feb 3, 2011 2:55 PM EST reply actions

I'm on board

I’ll reserve judgment for the end of next season, but I like that this guy is a winner. Plus maybe someone with personality can get the offense to play hard the whole game. I hope this guy coaches from the sidelines, one thing i didn’t like about Brat was his seat up in the booth. I know plenty of guys do that but I think we need a guy on the side lines firing people up, Brat never seemed to have any passion for the game.

by stripesinseattle on Feb 3, 2011 3:22 PM EST reply actions

haha!

Brat: “What?!? STAND for a whole game?!? and mix with the rabble?!? NO WAY!”

by stripesinseattle on Feb 3, 2011 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

I think he got to the point

where he was basically playing Madden. He substituted guys like the computer would shuffle them in instantly rather than it taking time to notify the players and get them in and out

by aguy on Feb 3, 2011 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

I like the move.

Someone who’s young, creative and hungry will be refreshing after 10 years of Brat.

What I Like

He comes in with a no identy offense, unlike Brats predictable offense, because it looked like the players were confused to the point they scaled it back constantly to make it more simple, and we all know in the NFL if you look simple, the defenses make you look like a simpleton,I cant tell you how many times I seen the RB get hit before they ever got to the line and the QB looking over a defense to the point the line was unsure of a audible or they get jumpy,or had to call a Timeout or take a delay penalty, players unsure whos in or out,and I know you seen certain WR’s either bitching an moanin and taking their good ole time getting back to the huddle,so Gruden has his hands full with alot a issues on the table with this offense,I wish him luck cause hes gonna need it,btw, drunk the kool aid many a times, only to see that Mikey didnt add the sugar and added vinegar just to show hes in charge, drink it or not,you just knew that was his little way of saying its not about you,its about me.
