According to sources, Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata is signing his one-year $12.5 million franchise tender today. The Ravens gave Ngata an average of the top-five salaries at his position, via the franchise tag, to prevent him from hitting free agency.
"The tender allows us to secure Haloti as a Raven right now," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "As we have said, our intention is to enter into a long-term contract with him. We want him to be a Raven."
The Browns, Steelers and Ravens have all used their franchise tags. The Browns tagged kicker Phil Dawson and the Steelers tagged linebacker LaMarr Woodley. That leaves the Bengals as the only AFC North team to not use their franchise tag even though players like Johnathan Joseph and Cedric Benson are heading to free agency, although the Bengals claim to be trying to sign each to long term deals before the CBA expires on March 4.
