Justin Houston, DE/OLB, Georgia
Some pundits have the Falcons targeting a complementary receiver to play with Roddy White, but there is a much more urgent need for creating more pressure on the quarterback. Enter hometown Bulldog, Justin Houston, at 6-foot-3 270lbs and with the speed, strength and versatility to contribute early and often for the Falcons. Coming out of Georgia, there’s no doubt the Falcons had a lot of tape on this kid and think he’d be a great fit. He’d be able to put his hand on the ground or stand up at outside linebacker. The transition he had at Georgia moving from D- line to stand up backer would provide invaluable in regards to transitioning into the NFL. The season he spent making that transition at Georgia went off without a hitch, and he can rely on that success for early confidence in camp (if there is one).
Per an Intro from Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports Shutdown Corner
"The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Houston has excelled in three- and four-man fronts as the Bulldogs have changed their defensive schemes, amassing 20 sacks (16 solo), 115 tackles (65 solo), 38 tackles for loss (30 solo), 17 quarterback hurries, five passes defensed, and two forced fumbles. In 2010 alone, he had 67 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks. Especially for his size, Houston put on a real show at the scouting combine. His 36 ½-inch vertical jump, the highest at his position, speaks to explosiveness off the snap, and his 40-yard bash, 3-cone, and shuttle times were all exceptional."
Some say his size is a knock and he’d be undersized as a 4-3 DE, likewise critics think he’d better fit the mold of OLB in a 3-4. Fortunately for the Falcons, this kid has produced at both spots so they could use him where they see him making the bigger impact. He’s got above average quickness and the athleticism to shed blockers as well as turn the corner. Good motor, and consistently makes plays in pursuit. With the shift to 3-4 hybrid backers, Houston would fit that mold perfectly in the NFL.
