2011 Cincy Jungle Mock Draft - The New York Jets Select...

For the No. 30 pick in the second-annual Cincy Jungle Mock Draft, Polo_614 selected for the New York Jets, who have a first round and third-round pick. They lost their second-round pick to the San Diego Chargers in their trade for Antonio Cromartie. Here is the pick.....

With the No. 30 pick in the 2011 Cincy Jungle Mock Draft, the New York Jets select....

Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

After making it to the AFC Championship Game back to back years, the New York Jets seem like a team that just needs a few pieces to make it to the super bowl. The Jets have many free agents this year and how they draft will give us a good idea of who they might resign when a new CBA deal is done. On a team that does not have too many holes, one of the biggest is on the Defensive line. Adding a starter to the line and building depth in the later rounds would be the best option for the Jets to build an impressive shutdown defense.

Star-divide

During the last few years the Jets have been known for stopping the pass and having one the best pair of corners in the league. Meanwhile an aging defensive line has been struggling to stop the run and constantly get after the quarterback. Drafting Taylor here makes sense because it puts an athletic big guy on the line that has pass rushing capability. During the AFC Championship the Steelers rushed for almost 200 yards, if the Jets could have put a stop to Mendenhall then it might have been Green Bay Vs New York in the Super Bowl. Both Shaun Ellis and Trevor Pryce are currently unrestricted free agents which leads the door wide open for Taylor to come in and begin shutting down running backs. Ellis and Pryce are both over 30 and have begin to show their age in the way they play, while both might still be effective, odds are the Jets will let at least one walk while letting the other mentor Taylor during his rookie campaign.

Phil Taylor is a 6’4’’ 230lbs lineman that before transferring to Baylor started two years at Penn State. During his senior year he was second team all Big-12, he had 62 tackles and 35 of those were solo. Among those 62 tackles seven were for a lost and he also started all 13 games his senior season. The Jets are in need of front seven players, they have a system that allows players to get after the quarterback and selecting Taylor here make sense and will quickly fill one of there biggest needs.

Not sure.

Is the guy suited for a 3-4 defense?

Nose Tackle in 3-4

Many of the draft scouts see him as a pure 3-4 nose tackle. He has got great quickness and fights off blocks very well. I should have mentioned more of that in the write up I did.

I'd still love to have a guy like this

or maybe Kenrick Ellis, from Hampton, to put the fear of god in AFC North interior linemen. I thought it was gonna be Jason “Don’t Call Me” Shirley but, apparently he was on the wrong side of the ball all along. Maybe if we draft TCU guard, Marcus Cannon, we can work on some plays with him lining up over center on D?
