With the thirty-first pick in the 2011 Cincy Jungle Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select...
Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
I’m sure any Pittsburgh fans on this site are screaming, "NO, WE NEED AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN!"
I have three things to say to you: 1. Why are you on Cincy Jungle as a Steelers fan. 2. I don’t like you. And 3. I would have taken an offensive lineman for the Steelers with this pick, but there have already been six offensive linemen taken so far and this is considered a draft in which the offensive linemen were fairly weak. So, I resorted to drafting a cornerback, which is arguably the Steelers’ second biggest need.
Enter Jimmy Smith.
Steelers safety Troy Palamalu may have already sealed his fate as a future hall of famer and he may define the Steeler secondary, but he can’t be everywhere at once. A weakness for the Steelers has been at the cornerback position and it’s about to get even weaker. William Gay and Ike Taylor, mediocre cornerbacks at best, are both free agents and Anthony Madison is still a work in progress.
The Steelers were ranked at No. 12 in pass defense during the regular season, averaging 214.1 yards per game, which is a little low for the Steelers typical defense. Jimmy Smith can help boost the Steelers secondary back where it belongs. He’s a physical corner that has no problem with a bump and run style of play and has good quick feet to allow him to maintain contact while in the five-yard area. The 6-2, 211 pounder is also good in run support, and can help the Steelers defend against running backs that get outside the defensive ends.
While I would have preferably taken an offensive lineman with the No. 31 overall pick, too many have been taken already and there just aren’t any left that would justify a first-round pick. Jimmy Smith is the clear choice here because he can help the Steelers fill one of the other biggest holes in their depth chart because he’s a physical corner that could easily move into a starting role, boosting their pass defense as well as their run defense.

We need OL! (just kidding)
1. I like to learn about other teams from people who know them best. 2. Awwww come on, I like you. 3. I agree completely, just because you have a need doesn’t mean you take that position automatically.
I can’t disagree with anything you said, the only thing that might stop this pick from happening is if the front office gets a bad vibe from the guy in interviews, since his reputation isn’t great. If they don’t think his attitude and/ or baggage is a concern, I’m all for it. Good pick.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

really?
Your team actually cares about a players personality and attitude, not just talent, weird.

I think I see what you did there, hahaha. I think they care to a point.
It’s not a deal breaker, at least public perception of a player isn’t. I think if they get a good feel for a guy in meeting with him, their personal opinion couns more than perception. Santonio Holmes is a good example of that, even if he didn’t work out long term he was a solid receiver for The ’Burgh while he was there.
Solid character and drive for success are two of the biggest factors I would look for, after game tape of course, and I think that the front office thinks the same way.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

it was kinda a play on both our teams
Because neither the bengals or steelers owners have character as a deal breaker to be honest.

Interesting pick -
I’m not a fan of Smith myself, but it makes a lot of sense, considering who is already gone. I just have to take issue with the knock on Ike Taylor – he might not be able to catch much of anything (although he did have an interception or two last season, which seemed to surprise him as much as everyone else) but he’s an awesome cover corner. Whether we manage to re-sign him is another matter, of course, but who knows what’s going to go down with almost anything this off-season? Thank God for the draft, is all I can say.
"If you're not getting better, I don't care what business you're in, you're a dead man. I try to look critically at the mistakes that I make and try to learn from them, like our team does." - Mike Tomlin
