How About Giving JaMarcus Russell a second chance...as a Bengal?
Ok I'm new here and haven't posted before, and I can already hear the uproar at the very mention of a certain ex-raider.
YES he has had work ethic problems.
YES he has had weight problems.
YES he has probably squandered millions.
HOWEVER. He is also one of the most physically talented QBs in history, and unquestionably one of the top arms in recent memory. He has taken alot of heat from the press, especially in Oakland, and justifiably so, he let them all down in Oakland big time. But so did Michael Vick in Atlanta. And almost everyone said he shouldn't be allowed into the NFL ever again, period. But the combination of a clean slate and a new (quality) coach has him playing at a MVP level. Now alot of that is mental, and you can't coach that. Vick matured mentally after his prison time, and came back a man not a punk. But If someone can motivate JaMarcus, believe in him and get him to believe in himself again, like back in the LSU days, I think he can still be a GREAT player. I personally say why look to get a QB in the first round when there's a number 1 overall selection to be had for cheap right now? Call me crazy but if I was Brown and Lewis, I would bring this guy in in a second. I mean, what is there to lose? your not going to have to pay him much more than minimum wage anyway. He can always serve as a backup if it doesn't work out. Give the man another chance in stripes, I say!

You should at least watch some of his tape.
When he was focused and motivated he had some really decent games…games that the Raiders won. As a matter of fact his season in ’08 was promising, and the Raiders finished on like a 5 game winning streak…..but then he fell apart in ’09.

The 2011 season.
What is there to gain? A very, very long shot at a potentially decent starting QB with a history of weight issues, lack of motivation, and addiction to whatever drug he was on.
I'd prefer to do that without the embarrassment of signing one of the bigger busts in the league.
We can ask Palmer Lite and LeFevour to do that if we want to.
not sure Russell is a bust
To me a bust is someone who was a consensus high pick.
31 other teams would not have drafted him number one and except for a couple he wouldn’t have been a top ten.
There’s a difference between a bust and a stupid draft pick.
"Pawtucket Patriot Beer. If you drink it, hot women will have sex in your backyard."
Thats not true
32 teams wouldn’t have drafted him in retrospect… but he was the consensus number 1 pick post combine. He was an ENORMOUS bust

Yes, I misremembered
Must have been drunk that year.
"Pawtucket Patriot Beer. If you drink it, hot women will have sex in your backyard."
People were calling Carlos Dunlap a bust two games into the season.
He was passed by all 32 teams in the first round and then at least twenty of them passed on him again. If Carlos Dunlap is a bust because he’s not starting a few games into his rookie season when he was drafted in the second round, JaMarcus Russell, a first round draft pick that was out of the league in three years, is indeed a bust.
he's the #1 bust of all time
and he also happens to sucks butthole at football…. If you’re Mike Brown putting out feelers, then just f*ck off….

Wrong.
JaMarcus was a star at LSU, and had a good season in 08. He had some terrible games in ‘09 its true, and that’s all anyone seems to remember, but I look at his career as a whole. Not to say he was as good as Moss at any point, but the analogy was on giving a guy a another shot not relative skill. Read slower next time.

It still is a really bad comparison.
Randy Moss is one of the top three wide receivers to play the game. JaMarcus Russell is one of the top three busts to play the game.
Ok compare him to Tommy Maddox then if you want
The point is there have been players, even QB’s, that everyone has rushed to call total draft busts, but given a few years and another team, they have been successful, even good.

Yep.
They’re called busts for a reason and rarely do they work out if the player involved has no semblance of a work ethic or motivation.
you can't be serious
I’d rather give Ryan Leaf another shot than JaMarcus….hell Akili Smith would be a better fit. Oh and Tommy Maddox, yeah that’s the type of guy we need hahahahahahahahaha

I find Russell a waste of our time that we can spend searching for actual solutions instead of a long shot reclamation project. We’ve had enough of those.
There was an article on Yahoo

We’re INCHES away? By my count we were about SEVEN games away. And he hasn’t retired yet so technically his career is not over so I don’t see that you can call him an overall bust yet.

No.
Really, he’s right, close games are always close. The Bengals had a 6-7 game streak where they lost by a touchdown or less. That is close, that is a sign that the team is almost there as most of those teams were very good teams (Squeelers, Saints, Indy, Falcons were all in that stretch). The only thing we couldn’t do was get out of our own way. The talent’s there, we just missed the lucky breaks we had last season as well as the ability to fully dominate.
We had a sucky record. But we didn’t suck at Buffalo or Cleveland’s level for a majority of the season.
Yeah, that's what I mean.
The 4-12 record doesn’t tell you much about our overall quality other than the fact that we need some work. Doesn’t tell you how MUCH work we need exactly. Some of those close games were the result of backdoor scores, after the opposing team appeared to lay down on defense. This resulted in a lot of debate over how heavily we should weigh Palmer’s good numbers.
Other games, however, were close because the Bengals made it close. They were almost as good as the other team on that given day.

The las thing we need
We don’t need another player who can’t get their act together. The way he’s played I’m surprised he got a 24 on the wonderlic test.
I wouldn't object to it.
But I don’t see how his style of play would fit in a WCO. He can heave the ball, but from what I’ve read, he’s downright awful on short and middle routes. If we were still playing Bratfense, it would make more sense from a physical tool standpoint. From a mental standpoint though, if Gruden really is a Quarterback Whisperer, then he may be able to reinvent the guy.

Um, excuse me
but do you know Jamarcus, personally? Because, otherwise, none of us- you included, know anything about him but what we’ve heard from the media. And the only objective method we have of evaluating him is by his body of work on the football field and that’s pretty obviously lackluster at best, dismal at worst. Considering the gifts he had to work with going in, his flame-out was all the more spectacular and pathetic. Russell would have to completely change his life, completely re-tool his thought processes, and essentially build a work ethic from scratch before he would be worth anyone’s time or money in the NFL. If you’ve got some supernatural view into his heart and soul, well, you’ll make more money with a booth at the circus sideshow.

I find it funny YOUR already getting personal and this is my first thread. No I don’t know Russell personally. But apparently you do if you know his “thought processes”…..whatever that means. And when I say the words of the media, I’m talking about how they love to use the word bust at the first excuse. And the personal attacks he’s had leveled at him for his previous use of codeine. How many starting players get busted every year for some illegal substance? Yeah the guy blew it in Oakland. Does that mean he doesn’t deserve the chance to compete ever again? I think not.

Jay will run the WCO, and JaMarcus has struggled with short throws and touch. But there was another cannon arm QB who liked to go deep alot that did very well in the WCO. We have a terrible history with drafting QBs even when Al had his marbles.

Maybe we could convince Al and Mike to kill each other?
Or maybe some kind of “Strangers On A Train” pact? I mean, nobody would expect me, an annually tortured Bengals’ fan, of spiking Al’s virgin blood cocktail with thalidomide, would they?

So let's bring JaMarcus to a great environment like the Bengals!
Oh wait..

if he doesn't work as a lineman
we could always try him at fullback. we lost our token non-lineman fat guy when jeremi johnson called it quits.
Lol, that the first really good point anyone has made
But I would still want to see it tried out

other than posting his career stats

*sigh*
Ok first off I’m going to tell you something I really believe. There are three kinds of lies:
Lies. Damned Lies.
And Statistics.
BUT if you want to play that game and pretend stats are like some all-encompassing and defining picture of a player, lets just make a random comparison on QB stats in their first 3 seasons. The guy I’m comparing Russell to just happens to be a HOF and won 2 SBs.
John Elway:
1985: 16gs 327/605 Pct: 54.0 Yds: 3,891 TD: 22 INT: 23 Sck: 38 Rating: 70.2
1984: 15gs 214/380 Pct: 56.3 Yds: 2,598 TD: 18 INT: 15 Sck: 24 Rating: 76.8
1983: 11gs 123/259 Pct: 47.5 Yds: 1,663 TD 7 INT: 14 Sck: 28 Rating: 54.9
JaMarcus Russell:
2009: 9gs 120/246 Pct: 48.8 Yds: 1,287 TD: 3 INT: 11 Sck: 33 Rating: 50.0
2008: 15gs 198/368 Pct: 53.8 Yds: 2,423 TD: 13 INT: 8 Sck: 31 Rating: 77.1
2007: 4gs 36/66 Pct: 54.5 Yds: 373 TD: 2 INT: 4 Sck: 6 Rating: 55.9
With no prior knowledge, looking at just these numbers for the first three years of their career, you could easily say: Elway looks a LITTLE better than Russell, but definitely not a starting NFL quarterback with that completion percentage and all those Ints. Denver took him 1st overall OMG he must be a BUST!!!
Stats are like the Bible, you can make them say whatever you want them to say.

when your talking about an nfl qb
With no work ethic or desire, stats tell a lot.

Your comparing stats with Elway so
Look at them again. You will see Elway progressed as the years went and look at Russell, he regressed.. This is a sign showing that his work ethic or just something isn’t right with him.
You should have looked at this comparison first before posting this, b/c there are probably more things that will be pointed out to you by others. Bad comparison.
Perfectly valid comparison, and it proves my point nicely.
“*You will see Elway progressed as the years went *”
Really? Looks to me like from the second year to the third, his rating dropped six points, his TD/INT ratio went UP, but he had more yards. I think you need to look again.
BOTTOM LINE: Russell has only had one and a half season’s worth of games to prove himself. That is not enough to call any player, especially a QB, a bust.

Russell has had
his opportunities especially with Al Davis who freakin had a man crush on him and he didn’t perform.
And as for Elway every stat went up except his rating, which like you said dropped 6 points, but that is due to his yards and more passes being thrown. 6 points is nothing in the ratings system. But when you regress as Russell has every year especially playing time there is something up, like maybe he sucks b/c of his work ethic and other things.
Your comparison is wrong b/c Elway has progressed and showed that he wanted to be a NFL QB, Russell has shown squat..
Take the blinders off your eyes!
what does is say about jamarcus
That jason campbell, who is by no means a superstar qb, took pretty much the same team and made them respectable?
by JCompton41 on Mar 9, 2011 4:36 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Jason was in and out of the starting lineup all season.
I don’t think you can put their 2010 wins or losses on Campbell fairly. The same goes for JaMarcus in 09. He only started 9 games, so yeah, his stats were terrible.

russell was benched because he sucked
And jason in and out of the lineup means even the backups were better than russell.

Campbell and Russell never played a season together.
Campbell coundn’t even hold on to the job versus Gradkowski
