I went Mock Draft crazy for you guys

Over the past 3-4 weeks, I have taken place in Five live mock drafts. This is where you only represent your team (I'm the Bengals of course) and you draft against 31 other knowledgeable people. I have to create a Big Board and try to address needs at the same time. I didn't always take the same path, but I feel like we would be happy with a few of the outcomes.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Mock Draft: MockOne

1.12) Aldon Smith - DE - Missouri

In this mock draft. I did what Mike Brown never does. I traded back and gained two 3rd rounds picks and a 5th round pick. When the 10th pick (Redskins) was on the Clock, Cam Newton and Julio Jones was still available. I figured I would at least get one of them. Then all of a sudden, The Titans traded into the 10th spot and took Newton and the Rams traded into the 11th place to get Jones. I was somewhat disapointed, but I went with a guy like Aldon Smith who I feel instantly upgrades the defense in more ways than one. Aldon Smith can line up at RE and split time with Michael Johnson in base packages. In nickel defense, Smith lines up inside where he's at his best. The four man nickel front would be MJ93, Atkins, Smith, Dunlap... yeah man.

1.29) Mark Ingram - RB - Alabama

I kept watching Ingram fall as I tried to wait patiently at pick 35. When the Bears wanted to trade back for a 4th round pick, I jumped on it. Mark Ingram is the exact type of back that would thrive in Cincinnati. Good bye Benson, Ingram is now our Bell cow RB.

3.02) Andy Dalton - QB - TCU

I stayed with my pick and took our QB. Jay Gruden gets his man in Andy Dalton. Easy pick for me, I have Dalton as a 3rd rounder on my board.

3.03) Greg Little - WR - UNC

This is one of the picks I got when I traded back in round one. Greg Little is a perfect west coast WR. He's big and strong with run after the catch ability. Think Brandon Marshall type of WR... even the baggage.

3.32) Jaiquawn Jarrett - SS - Temple

I was supposed to pick at 3.09, but again, I traded back. This time I acquired two 4th round picks to move all the way back to pick 32 in round 3. Another easy picks for me. Jarrett has a solid 3rd round grade from me. He's a SS who has some coverage ability. His best days are ahead of him.

4.25) Niles Paul - WR - Nebraska

Niles Paul is another West Coast WR. He's a strong, thick guy who can get extra yards after the catch. Paul also has return ability.

4.32) Jurrell Casey - DT - USC

Casey was a 3rd rounder on my board. I dont think DT is a major need, but I couldn't let him slip any further. Had he stayed in school for his senior season, Casey could easily be a high 2nd round pick. This is a luxury pick. WE draft him and let him be the 4th DT on the roster and let him develop.

5.02) Lee Ziemba - T/G - Auburn

Fair value here for Ziemba in the 5th round. He will have the chance to compete for the starting LG spot on the Bengals, while also backing up at Tackle. Ziemba is a winner and comes from a top Program.

5.12) Ahmad Black - S - Florida

Ahmad Black's measurables leave something to be desired. His intangibles do not. Black is a great football player. I would readily take him in round 2 if he was 6'0″ 205 lbs. He's not, so instead I get a player in round 5 that will make this team better. Black is one of those guys who will continually make the roster for the next 5-8 years. How many times can you say that with a 5th round pick? He's also another winner from a big time program.

6.02) Lee Smith - TE - Marshall

The Lee Smith pick may look strange on the surface. Our plan is to use him as a #2 blocking TE who can compliment Jermaine Gresham's receiving skills. Lee Smith is known for his blocking ability. He's almost a 6th offensive lineman out there. That works to the Bengals strengths because they like to bring in a jumbo package and run the ball with 6 linemen. Lee Smith can provide almost the same advantage in 2 TE sets without bringing in the bright neon sign that reads "RUN PLAY!" in backup OT Dennis Roland.

7.04) Zane Taylor - C/G - Utah

Taylor was need and slight value pick. We had a 5-6 round grade on him after his impressive workouts this offseason. Taylor will have to battle for playing time with 2nd year player Reggie Stephens for a backup interior spot. Both should make the 53 man as we look for a starting LG and possibly a starting Center if Kyle Cook cannot be re-signed.

7.43) JacQuizz Rodgers - RB- Oregon St

This was a straight value pick. We had a solid 5th round grade on Quizz. We were definitely surprised to see him last this long. It must have been his average workout numbers.
Quizz gives us a strong stable of RBs that's now four deep. We want to run the ball and drafting Ingram and Rodgers will go a long way. Add in Bernard Scott and 3rd down back Brian Leonard, and we can be both dynamic and effective in the run game. Quizz also gives an added boost to the return game.

Grade: By ProFootballTalk and RotoWorld's Evan Silva

12 Missouri DE Aldon Smith — Ideal blend of length, explosiveness; starts immediately at RE.

29 Alabama RB Mark Ingram — A rich man’s Cedric Benson, who figures to depart in free agency.

66 TCU QB Andy Dalton — "Winner": A high-value pick in the third round, not anywhere else.

67 North Carolina WR Greg Little — A run-after-catch wideout to book end Jerome Simpson.

96 Temple S Jaiquawn Jarrett — Ballhawk with plenty of physicality; starts at strong safety.

122 Nebraska WR Niles Paul — Another run-after-catch receiver who plays fast, can return.

129 USC DT Jurrell Casey — Should’ve stayed in school, but gets upfield when motivated.

134 Auburn T/G Lee Ziemba — Ziemba is short on athleticism, and will make switch to guard.

143 Florida S Ahmad Black — Steal in the middle of round five; draft’s top playmaking DB?

167 Marshall TE Lee Smith — Blocking specialist tight end to complement Jermaine Gresham.

207 Utah C Zane Taylor — Heady center who can do a ton of reps on 225-pound bench press.

246 Oregon State RB Jacquizz Rodgers — Mayock is talking about him as a third-round pick.

The surprisingly aggressive Bengals traded down twice in round one, picking up two extra third-round picks and a fifth-rounder for their move from No. 4 to 12.  It’s a Belichickian swindle, and Cincinnati still came away with an elite pass rusher to book end emerging star Carlos Dunlap.  The Bengals didn’t acquire a franchise quarterback, but Dalton is considered more pro-ready than most signal callers in this class after 50 college starts.  New coordinator Jay Gruden’s West Coast offense also gives Dalton his best chance at success.  The Bengals impressively filled the rest of their glaring holes in a tremendous collection of talent.  It’s the best draft this grader graded.

Mock Draft: The 3-4 Mock (ExpertsMock)

1.04) Blaine Gabbert - QB - Missouri

This time I took the "franchise QB" in Blaine Gabbert. I figured this is a possible scenario so I might have to play it out a few times to see which results I get. I'm a Gabbert fan, so I don't have a problem with starting the draft this way.

2.03) Corey Liuget - DT - Illinois

I wasnt looking for a DT or have Corey Liuget as my target in round 2, but he's #14 on my Big Board. I couldn't pass him up. Day 1 starter inside.

3.03) Titus Young - WR - Boise St

This is my Desean Jackson redemption pick. Young is a burner who I would love to line up across from Jerome Simpson.

This draft was only three rounds because it was hard to get so many draftniks together at one time.

 _______________________________________________________________

Mock Draft: MockTre

1.04) A.J. Green - WR - Georgia

Took our guy, AJ Green. Do I need to comment? Or should we know everything about this guy already?

1.32) Andy Dalton - QB - TCU

After Ponder went 16 to the Jags, the run on QBs started and I jumped in. This is a scenario we have thought about recently. Will Mike Brown trade up to get a QB? I gave up a 4th round pick to move up and select Dalton.

3.25) Marcus Gilchrist - FS - Clemson

I traded back in round three to get my 4th round pick back that I traded away earlier. Marcus Gilchrist is a former CB who played FS for Clemson last year. He has man-to-man coverage skills as well as safety ability. This is a pick I could actually see the Bengals making.

 _______________________________________________________________

Mock Draft: National Football Post Mock1

1.04) Blaine Gabbert - QB - Missouri

Again, went the QB route in this draft.

2.03) Torrey Smith - WR - Maryland

Torrey Smith is a guy that I like more than most. I realize that, but I think he can be a dynamic WR outside the numbers and the Bengals really need that.

3.12) Will Rackley - T/G - Lehigh

I traded back with Dallas and gained an extra 5th and 6th round pick. Will Rackley is a guy that starts day 1 at LG and possibly RG, while also backing up both OT spots.

4.02) DeAndre McDaniel - SS - Clemson

McDaniel might be our collective favorite player here on Cincyjungle.

5.03) Daniel Thomas - RB - Kansas St

I'm not as high on Thomas as others, but I recognize the talent. He can be our bell cow RB that we found in the 5th round? Steal!

5.12) Mark Herzlich - OLB - Boston College

If Herzlich is medically able to have a full career. I want him. High character guy who starts at SAM will Maualuga moves to Middle.

6.02) Jeremy Kerley - WR - TCU

Kerley is a savy inside WR who can also be a gadget player. Helps in KR/PR too.

6.12) Mark Legree - FS - App St

LeGree is a small school ball-hawking free safety. Tons of upside.

7.02) Derrick Locke - RB - Kentucky

Value pick, Locke is a 5th rounder on my board. Helps the return game and is a great change of pace back for Daniel Thomas. Pound that rock to help Gabbert.

7.43) Lee Smith - TE - Marshall

See above. Better value in 7th round.

Mock Draft: MockThree

This draft is still going. You can follow along on Twitter using the hashtag #mockthree. I'll update it as we go. Some really impressive draftniks will be grading it. I cant wait. Follow one of my Co-Gms on twitter - @DaveyHamilton

1.04) A.J. Green - WR - Georgia

No explanation needed.

2.28) Bruce Carter - LB - UNC

We had the 35th overall pick but had when it came time to pick, we were hoping for a 1st round guy to still be available. This wasn’t the case and we had an offer to trade back to the 60th pick and gain two 4th round draft picks. When our pick finally arrived. We narrowed our choices down to two players (Ryan Williams and Bruce Carter), both players were in our top 40 on our board. We decided that Bruce Carter held slightly more value because of the LB position really take a drop off after him. He would easily be a top 20 player if he didnt hurt himself in the last game of his UNC career. Carter can come in and take his time to rehab. We dont need him in 2011 and feel like we will gain an extra first round pick when Carter plays in 2012.

3.03) Ryan Williams - RB - Virginia Tech

We targeted him in round two and really believe he is in that top tier of RBs this year. He’s really a special player when healthy. Williams gives the Bengals a legit RB threat who can catch out of the backfield and run for big chunks of yardage. When was the last time they had that? We want to be a running offense with a west coast passing touch, Williams fits perfectly. This is our 3rd pick of the draft and we have now three players from our top 40, through 66 picks.

4.02) Ricky Stanzi - QB - Iowa

I like Stanzi. I honestly think he can develop into a starting QB in the NFL. After our 3rd round pick, we targeted Stanzi the whole way.

4.09) Quinton Carter - S - Oklahoma

Carter was another one of my targets. He can play FS or SS. He fits the Zimmer mold with his versatility back there.

4.28) Demarcus Love - T/G - Arkansas

Love is one of those T/G types that the Bengals love. So naturally, Love is the pick they'd love to make. Get it?

5.03) Ricky Elmore - DE - Arizona

Elmore is another one of my guys. Think Aaron Kampman / Kyle Vandenbosh when you think about Ricky Elmore. He can rotate with Dunlap and MJ93.

5.26) Niles Paul - WR - Nebraska

See above. We actually traded up to get him. We had a 4th round grade on him, and was the 2nd highest player on our board remaining with a significant drop off after him. So we got aggressive for a player that will make this team better.

7.43) TBD

Let me know what you think...

Good Lord you've been busy.

Nice work, Joe. My personal favorite is the National Football Post effort. With Torrey Smith, Will Rackley, and DeAndre McDaniel at 2, 3, & 4, the first round pick is almost like gravy. It’s good that it’s Gabbert. It’s even better that it’s not Ponder, Dalton, or Stanzi. The only quibbles I have- and they’re minor, are the Herzlich pick because I don’t think he’ll ever get the speed back the cancer took out of him and the Kerley pick because both it and the Herzlich pick might be better spent on interior line depth on either side of the ball. Love, love, love Legree and Locke. I might even argue that a backfield tandem of B. Scott and Locke with a good fullback might make Daniel Thomas unnecessary. Locke can run inside and did so enthusiastically in the SEC his whole career.

+1 The NFP Mock 1 was a really nice draft

Great job on all of them though. I wish you had targeted OGs a little bit higher cause we’ve got plenty of 5th round talent at that spot already, but that’s nitpicking a bit. If we ended up with Gabbert or Dalton I’d be pretty happy too.

I like the mock one draft

Its totally unrealistic but I still like it! No way Dalton lasts until round 3, Rodgers lasts to round 7, etc.

by ddbumpus on Apr 24, 2011 1:26 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think Dalton should be drafted in round 3 or 4

He’s basically the same guy as Colt McCoy (who played against vastly superior competiton in college). There were rumors that McCoy would go 1st round last year…went in the 3rd. I think people like the idea of Dalton (smart, ‘winner’ in college etc) but when they get up to the podium they’ll realize the guy just doesnt have that high of a ceiling (lacks arm strength and accuracy on passes over 15 yards) and go a different direction. We’ll see in a week…

I'd go one step further
He’s basically the same guy as Colt McCoyDan LeFevour

Just like there was no way Clausen fell to the middle of the second in 2010?

These were 32 hardcore fans making the picks, not one diehard manipulating the draft to accommodate his wishful thinking. Sometimes good players fall.

youre exactly right

Each team had 3 GMs to makes the picks. 100 people passed on this guy for whatever reason.

Like NFP Mock One also with the exceptions stated by Paul Cannon. Awesome work.

There is

to much trading back in mock one for this to be even remotely possible. Unrealistic and to much movement in the draft. But I like those picks for being hypothetical.

I really like the mocks

if for nothing else other than they are interesting and different. At times, I think you may have traded down too much though in a fit of Belichik mania. sometimes quality over quantity is the mark of a good draft too.

It’d be cool if we could see how the whole mock played out to see who was still on the board etc

Mike Broiwn has traded back, we traded back twice before grabbing Perry.

That said I went the conventional mock – Mock Tre – because, while I like the first, I do’nt see Dalton being there at 60 in the first mock, and I don’t think Gabbert is worth the 4 overall.

I did really ike the last one, but I like Dalton over Stanzi.

do you like Dalton more than Stanzi if...

Dalton goes in round 2 and Stanzi in round 4? That’s what happened.

I'd LOVE the Mockone draft, if

instead of Ingram at 29, we’d go oline. Danny Watkins, Derrek Sherrod or Benjamin Ijalana could be penciled in as starters right away. They would immediately upgrade the LG position, something we’ll absolutely need with a rookie QB. LG is a position I feel we can’t wait for a “project”

I didnt reach in MockThree

And in my opinion… any where I took Gabbert

in my humble opinion…

Taking Stanzi anywhere other than round 6, 7 or UFA is a reach.

Also, taking Gabbert inside of the top 10 is a reach when his upside isn’t very “up” and when his scouting grade doesn’t warrant him a selection inside of the top 4.

by ephram on Apr 26, 2011 7:12 AM EDT up reply actions

and obviously i Disagree

I think Stanzi is a solid 4th round pick and I know people who have a 2nd round grade on him.
as for Gabbert, his upside is as high as any QB in this draft or previous drafts. As high as Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Josh Freeman. The only reason Cam Newton will go higher than Gabbert come draft day, is because of potential. Not because he’s a better QB.

I think i watched too many Big 10 games to be very high on Stanzi. But maybe in the right system with the right talent around him, he will be more than he was at Iowa….a QB who was pretty good as a senior after struggling for his first 3 years.

As for Gabbert, i think he is like Newton….people either love him or they don’t. I’m just not seeing anything from him that convinces me that he is any better than a servicable 2nd tier NFL starter or good quality NFL backup.

But only time will tell….and who knows…..i could be completley wrong on both of them. I’m not an NFL scout, so my job isn’t on the line if i’m off on my projections of them :-)

by ephram on Apr 26, 2011 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

most would agree..

that Newton and Gabbert are first round talents. The argument over whether either is worth a top five pick is kinda silly, in my opinion. They’re quarterbacks. Like it or not, the top few qbs available are probably going to be taken earlier than they really should on a pure talent basis. When you consider how many teams are desperate for QBs it’s obvious that you can’t just sit around and hope a good one falls to you in later rounds. If you have a backup plan (that doesn’t involve handing the keys to the franchise over to an absolute nobody like LeFever) then you can pass on QBs, if you don’t then you can’t. And if anyone in the organization is hoping to suck this year and get Luck next year I hope they get fired and then set on fire.
