With the No. 64 pick in the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select......

Randall Cobb, WR, Kentucky

As the second round rolls to an end, the SB XLV Champion Green Bay Packers (it is just so fun to say that…) are left with a decent draft board. As mentioned earlier, Ted Thompson loves to adhere to this board religiously, sometimes to the chagrin of fans, but hey, it works so why fix it. The top guys remaining, in no particular order, are: Randall Cobb (WR Kentucky), Christian Ballard (DE Iowa), Curtis Brown (CB Texas), Orlando Franklin (OT Miami), DeMarco Murray (RB Oklahoma), Stefan Wisniewski (C Penn State), and Ras-I Dowling (CB Virginia). That is a good board to sift through, and here is what Ted told me when he asked me to hand in his pick.

"Cobb is an excellent athlete, but he is hard to place. We tend to take a lot of deep shots with our receivers, and that isn’t his forte. But he could thrive as a third down RB and slot receiver."

"Ballard is too small for our scheme, plain and simple. Heck of a player though. Plus we got Paea earlier so no sense in overloading the D-line too much." (Pack Backers around the globe will cheer at this logic coming from Ted…)

"Brown is a great athlete, but it is really hard to say how good of a D-back he is. Sounds like an Al Davis player to me…"

"Franklin is a huge fella. Could be a great OT or Guard, but could also be a total bust. Who knows…"

"Murray is Dynamic. Great in the passing game, which we love, and would be a great fit in our running scheme, but those injuries scare me."

"Stefan is gonna be a great O-lineman. Probably an excellent center. With the right coaching, he could be a line anchor for years to come…"

"Dowling seems like the complete package. Would be excellent in our scheme. Only question is how he has recovered from those injuries over the past year. Would love to seem him in a full workout, but it is what it is."

So, it seems like Ted’s top four are Cobb, Murray, Wisniewski, and Dowling. I was then elated to hear that he chose Randall Cobb, of my home state, Kentucky. I figure the logic was that all four of these guys fill potential needs. Murray is lost due to his injury concerns, and the fact that he seems similar to players already on the roster. Wisniewski helps the weak O-line, but Center is one of the stronger spots on it, thanks to Scott Wells. Dowling could be a great bookend corner across from Tramon Williams, and could be taught by Charles Woodson, but it is hard to judge him with his injuries, missed senior season, and lack of workout material. Cobb, while not an excellent fit, lands at the top of the board, and that is what matters in the end. Plus, he could fill the potential need of a WR2 and RB. Two birds with one stone and all that… But then again, I’m not Ted, so what do I know. I just hand the picks to Darth Vader… I mean Roger Goodell.
