Schefter: Bengals Trade Undisclosed Pick to 49ers for Taylor Mays

LONDON ENGLAND - OCTOBER 31: Brandon Lloyd #84 of Denver Broncos is tackled by Taylor Mays #23 of San Francisco 49ers during the NFL International Series match between Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers at Wembley Stadium on October 31 2010 in London England. According to a Tweet from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bengals have traded an undisclosed draft pick for safety Taylor Mays.

49ers traded S Taylor Mays to Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick.less than a minute ago via UberSocial for BlackBerry Favorite Retweet Reply

Mays will likely fight Chris Crocker and Reggie Nelson for a starting safety job and will join Gibril Wilson, Tom Nelson, Jeromy Miles and Robert Sands on the depth chart.

This move came right after the Bengals lost Donte Whitner to the 49ers after it was already announced that he signed with the Bengals.

Mays played in all 16 games in 2010 for the 49ers, making 38 tackles and two passes defensed.

We'll update you with more information as it's made available.

straight from stripe hype

Rumored Undisclosed pick is valued at being a 4th round 2012 Draft pick. It could conditionally be bumped up unto being a 3rd round pick if Mays were to play 80% of the defensive snaps this season

taking his contract and a 7th round pick

would have been doing the 49ers a favor. if its a 4th round pick, the bengals got fleeced.

We had a choice?

Sadly this is what happens when they cheaped out and didn’t throw another couple million on the fire, that would have allowed us to secure May’s replacement. You remember him. The guy who was a Bengal via Twitter.

Re:

The Bengals got the player they wanted by giving up a pick that is allegedly two rounds lower than where they were going to draft him a year ago. Additionally, Mays now has a year of NFL experience under his belt.
If anyone got “fleeced”, it’s the 49ers. Basically trading a second round pick for a fourth round pick.

half-full half-empty

me, i don’t respect brown’s acumen as saving a 2nd round pick in a trade for a 4th. i see a player that nobody would have traded for and we could have got off the wire for free.

It was rumored that the bears were going to give them a 3rd round pick.

However they backed out a few days ago. Their plan was to move him to LB. So we got him for cheaper than what another club was going to offer.

If anyone can use him to his strengths its zimmer. I don’t think he will ever be a superstar, to stiff in coverage, but hopefully he rocks a few receivers and I’ll be happy.

by ephram on Aug 22, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I would be surprised if it's not conditional....

they put him on the trading block three weeks ago and no takers. My guess is it could potentially be a 5th if he plays alot, if he ends up mainly on special teams which you got to figure is where he’s going to be until he understands the system I would say it will end up being a 6th or 7th. Didn’t he come out as a junior ? NFL Countdown had him ranked the 22nd best player coming out of the draft. Has his stock fallen that much ? He’s only 23. He’s younger than alot of this year’s rookies. This was MB’s plan all along. Trick the 49ers into thinking they were going to sign Whitner so they acquire Mays at garage sale price. He’s a genus.

by redberkey on Aug 22, 2011 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

They talked about him the year before

But he stayed in school. He was talked about as an early first rounder at that time but slipped his last year in school.
Hopefully Zimmer can put him in roles that play to his strengths. He definitely has highlight reel potential…. for both sides. He’s got to be better than Our current # 4&5 safeties. Maybe #3 as well. He’s not a franchise safety but he’s an upgrade.

But its going to far. Football is a contact sport, these players get paid a lot of money, because they put their bodies in danger for my entertainment. Once you can’t hit a receiver who is jumping for a ball, that’s taking away a lot.

by JCompton41 on Aug 22, 2011 9:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That was poor

It wasn’t entirely necessary but far from flagrant. He didn’t lower his head or anything. The WR was going down and I think Moore caught him higher than he wanted to. It looked like normal continuation. Unfortunately, people are going to get hurt in this game.
What was the deciding factor in the penalty? Out of bounds/late hit or defenseless ball carrier? That’s a tough one but if it’s the latter it signals that the DBs need to back off when another tackler is engaged. That changes the game and will change the game is the first tackler doesn’t wrap up the ball carrier.

Unless Jones is lights out. Maybe in spots where we need someone to cover speed, but I don’t think as a full time starter. If they thought that they wouldnt have brought in clements, they would have went after a cheaper fill in until Jones was healthy.

jones showed flashes last season

hard to say, could guess its possible for jones to start at #3 on the depth moving up to starter to cover an injury and possibly becoming #2 again if he shows the same flashes he did last season.

Taylor Mays

Positives:
+Freak Athlete
+Very Aggressive
+Makes Great Plays

Negatives:
+Likes to Drill people w/his shoulder instead of tackle them – does not wrap up!
+Will wiff on tackling people
+Can get lost in coverage

Best use: SS on run support rushing at the RB or blitzing

Worst use: Coverage in passing downs

Only problem i see is that in the 1st 2 preseason games we suck at pass coverage but are pretty stout against the run. After this move, we still pretty much suck at covering people. But nobody will run against us now. We’ll give up 30 rushing yards and 400 passing yards every game :-)

think of it this way

how many 1st or second rounders on d now? howard=2, lawson=1, baby rey=2, hall=1, jones=1, nelson=1, and mays=2…if we could only upgrade our d-line…wait, already good, almost forgot rivers

That's sort of our thing.

Reclaim talented first rounders that no one wants anymore for various reasons (often legal) and have Zim and co. teach them to be good again. It makes for a pretty good defense.

How can we have Def Backs consisting of:

CB
Round 1 L Hall
Round 1 N Clements
Round 1 A Jones

Safety
Round 2 T Mays
Round 1 R Nelson

But yet not cover anybody?

You really can’t take people much higher than round 1.

Found this interesting...49ers Def-Coord comments after preseason game
(regarding S Reggie Smith) “He’s definitely in the mix there for us at the safety position. We feel good with [S Donte] Whitner, him, [S Dashon] Goldson, [S Madieu] Williams, and [S C.J.] Spillman. We feel like we’ve got five safeties there that can play in the NFL. Some of them have great special teams value over the others, so if we have to keep four, that will be a hard decision. If we keep five, I think they will all be different pieces that we will use during the season.”

They don’t even list Mays as one of their top 5 safeties "who can play in the NFL.
That being said, i’m guessing we got him on the cheap? Or at least i’m hoping.

by ephram on Aug 22, 2011 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

spillman is garbage, I think mays wanted a chance to start and niners were not going to give it to him so he asked for a trade. mays is clearly better than 2 of those 5 and may end up being better than all of them

Sup HH!

He’s not a big fan of Spillman, who was a special teams stud last year (but didn’t play at all as S). Spillman has started playing S in practice, but he doesn’t look too good in games.

Orein Harris for Mays

hey guys, do the Bengals still have Orien Harris? Maybe we gave the 49ers him for Mays just like how we got Brian Leonard :P

by voken99 on Aug 22, 2011 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

as bad as M Brown is...he seems to make some decent trades

FS Reggie Nelson for a practice squad CB
backup RB Brian Leonard for a DT who was going to get cut
QB Ryan Fitzpatrick for a 7th (which turned out to be the year we ended up needing Fitz because Carson got hurt)
backup SS Taylor Mays for a low pick (i’m hoping a low pick)

Now if he can just dump Carson for something. Heck, trade Carson Palmer and throw in lil’ bro in for free.

by ephram on Aug 22, 2011 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems he has his moments with the bargain bin. There’s plenty of second chances, as most players will only come here as a second choice.

If you are a true BENGAL fan like i am

Then you should be thanking the football gods for this.

Mays is the perfect fit for this defense and this division. If you want to beat the Ravens and the “Bitchberg” Steelers, you have to stop Rice and Mendenhal because their offense runs through them.

I don’t care about Mays and his rep as a poor pass defender because he is an upgrade over Crocker and Company.

NOW LETS JUST HOPE THIS TRADE GOES THROUGH

But Mays fits a Bengals’ defense that needs its safeties to be able to play both strong and free. They find a guy that roamed center field at USC with a big body intriguing and it’s believed they’ll try to get him out there for Thursday’s game at Paul Brown Stadium against the Panthers after what would be only two practices.

Love the pickup

defense keeps getting younger and more athletic. i think he will be better in pass coverage because he wont necessarily be matched man to man as much as he was in san fran. that is our what howard and lawson are for

straight from stripe hype

Rumored Undisclosed pick is valued at being a 4th round 2012 Draft pick. It could conditionally be bumped up unto being a 3rd round pick if Mays were to play 80% of the defensive snaps this season

by joeb69 on Aug 22, 2011 11:59 PM EDT reply actions

But no really

I like this signing too. Reggie Nelson is showing something here that he never showed in Jacksonville, so as people have mentioned above, Zimmer is bound to get the same results out of Mays

by Oregonbengalsfan on Aug 23, 2011 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I know there were people who wanted it to be a 6th or 7th rounder

but I think a fourth round pick is a great value for a guy who was a second round pick just one year ago — even if he just ends up being a special teams player and a solid backup.

4th rounder is pushing it, but

I still like it. Either they gave up too much or Zimmer really thinks this kid has got what it takes to be great. And I’d bet on the latter being MB is pretty cheap. Sounds like Zimmer has really got MB’s ear since losing JJ.

Now all that's left is trading Palmer.

Yeah, I know…enough is enough. But I’d call it one heck of an offseason if that were to happen. At this point we know Carson will never play for the Bengals again. So maybe MB is just holding out a little so Carson doesn’t have any time to get adjusted to a new team with a different system (Miami). Miami is looking pretty desperate for a QB and might still be willing to offer a couple draft picks for Carson. Just sayin. Too hopeful? Most likely.

by M Shop on Aug 23, 2011 12:42 AM EDT reply actions

I know where I'd trade him

Indy, they need a qb till peyton gets back then he’d ride the pine f him

by joeb69 on Aug 23, 2011 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

even with a restructured deal...

that’s alot of money to pay a day to start a couple games and sit him. Palmer’s best bet is to hope someone loses a starter pretty soon and don’t have backup options.

by KSE on Aug 23, 2011 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Carson's best hope

is that MB unsticks his head out of his ass.

by TCfromDubVee on Aug 23, 2011 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

wait till next offseason

They have no reason to trade him before then.

by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 12:51 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

plenty of reason

his value for one. There are a few good QBs in next year’s draft that will eliminate need for some teams unlike this year where teams like Miami, Oakland, Seattle still have need for a QB. And let’s not forget headache of hearing “he said this” and having him somehow still remain a topic of conversation that no one wants. Gruden was asked just the other day if he thought CP was coming back. Bengals have to move on, but if he’s still out there in limbo then it will always be a distracting topic.

by M Shop on Aug 23, 2011 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I like how we are putting the usc defense back together

rivers reyrey mays rucker (even though he was a little before them). Mays should do better here because he knows how to play with rey and keith. Plus he knows how to play with nate and manny

by dino8500 on Aug 23, 2011 1:21 AM EDT reply actions

Mays seems like a good kid with a solid attitude, hard working and all that too.

Hope he works out for you all… and Manny.

Clements should worry you though against certain types of WR’s. If teams have more than one speedster, Zimmer better take him completely off the field for those plays; even if it is some kind of zone. I would bet my last dollar that he will frustrate you in some games. Consistency in coverage has been an issue because of age and loss of speed. He will own the slower WR’s though.

Lord knows you all have given up some pretty valuable players to us over recent years, so I hope it all works out…Except against us early on ;)

Like the signing for a couple of reasons

1. Nelson was a beast and an all-pro with the Jags when he was allowed to roam and pick off passes. Mays is a beast against the run, giving Zimmer that run stuffing SS while allowing his FS to roam.
2. Mays could play OLB in passing situations, giving us more speed and pass rushing up front while still having someone who can jam a TE.
3. Mays allows the Bengals to be able to use Crocker at nickle in certain situations.
4. Mays gives us quality depth, which is something we have lacked over the years at a position where we can’t seem to keep guys healthy.
5. It allows us to send Bennett packing for the UFL, b/c frankly, Crocker is a better CB than Bennett.
6. The Bengals secondary was fun to watch when David Fulcher was coming up to destroy people. Now we have a guy in that same mold with arguable more athletic ability.
7. WR’s don’t like to get hit when coming across the middle and now we have 2 guys (Rey and Mays) who will knock their head off. That causes alligator arms and makes WR’s timid. We haven’t had that in awhile.

As much as I would like to see Bennett go, I think he still hangs around until Jones is back on the field and shows he is healthy. I would expect to see Gibril Wilson cut b/c of this move.

Sure. Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson

by UpStateMike on Aug 23, 2011 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

agree...

…the good news is he isn’t pressed into and every down starter, we can use him for his talents, and still develop him. I don’t know about the whole OLB thing, but using him on the safety blitz in passing situations makes a ton of sense.

by goffchile on Aug 23, 2011 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

If it's a conditional 4th round pick then this was a really good move.

I was assuming we gave up the extra 3rd rounder we got for Chad, which this would I guess turn into if he plays the snaps – but I doubt he’ll get 80% of the snaps. I don’t think anyone gets 80% of the snaps in Zimmer’s defense except maybe the MLB.

Still, you have to be a little wary of why Harbaugh was so quick to dump him. He was a borderline 1st round pick last year. What were they expecting to see in one year of limited playing time? Makes me think he might have been a loafer in practice. Still, you’d think he’d be happy to team back up with Rey and Rivers. If anyone can get him fired up you’d think it would be Rey. Plus if he was slacking off this would be a pretty good wake up call…no one wants to be traded to the Bengals. If he comes around and plays to his potential then we have our SS of the future and basically got him for free. Can’t complain about that.
