Schefter: Bengals Trade Undisclosed Pick to 49ers for Taylor Mays
According to a Tweet from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bengals have traded an undisclosed draft pick for safety Taylor Mays.
49ers traded S Taylor Mays to Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick.
Mays will likely fight Chris Crocker and Reggie Nelson for a starting safety job and will join Gibril Wilson, Tom Nelson, Jeromy Miles and Robert Sands on the depth chart.
This move came right after the Bengals lost Donte Whitner to the 49ers after it was already announced that he signed with the Bengals.
Mays played in all 16 games in 2010 for the 49ers, making 38 tackles and two passes defensed.
We'll update you with more information as it's made available.

straight from stripe hype
Rumored Undisclosed pick is valued at being a 4th round 2012 Draft pick. It could conditionally be bumped up unto being a 3rd round pick if Mays were to play 80% of the defensive snaps this season

taking his contract and a 7th round pick
would have been doing the 49ers a favor. if its a 4th round pick, the bengals got fleeced.
" I for one, welcome our new Buffalo overlords. " - Whokebe
We had a choice?
Sadly this is what happens when they cheaped out and didn’t throw another couple million on the fire, that would have allowed us to secure May’s replacement. You remember him. The guy who was a Bengal via Twitter.
Sure. Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
Re:
The Bengals got the player they wanted by giving up a pick that is allegedly two rounds lower than where they were going to draft him a year ago. Additionally, Mays now has a year of NFL experience under his belt.
If anyone got “fleeced”, it’s the 49ers. Basically trading a second round pick for a fourth round pick.

half-full half-empty
me, i don’t respect brown’s acumen as saving a 2nd round pick in a trade for a 4th. i see a player that nobody would have traded for and we could have got off the wire for free.
" I for one, welcome our new Buffalo overlords. " - Whokebe
It was rumored that the bears were going to give them a 3rd round pick.
However they backed out a few days ago. Their plan was to move him to LB. So we got him for cheaper than what another club was going to offer.
im ok with it
If anyone can use him to his strengths its zimmer. I don’t think he will ever be a superstar, to stiff in coverage, but hopefully he rocks a few receivers and I’ll be happy.

maybe not best receiver
But best I’d say best football player on his offense.

if hes not the best reciever
than he cant be the best player on offence. the better receiver would be. I.E. mike wallace
But Ward is the better football player.
Better blocker, better knowledge of the scheme and defense.. he is a great football player.
i dont consider ward dirty at all.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 12:52 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
he plays receiver like a linebacker
I don’t see that as dirty. A crack back block on linebacker is not dirty its a hell of a block.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 12:58 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The play on rivers was clean
not very nice but it was a clean shot. however he is still known around the league as a dirty player who tries to intentionally hurt other teams players
but he caught him in the front
i hate ward but technically it was legal rivers should have been paying better attention
agree
That’s on rivers though. If I were him I would be waiting for ward to come over the middle, and he would catch a James Harrison style tackle.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 1:09 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
i dont see him taking out knees
Or anything like that, most his blocks are clean but just brutal. I love his style of play and wish more receivers were like that. Just my opinion, I like the old school mentality of people like him.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 1:07 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
i agree
his style is a better style back when the NFL was a full contact league but i just cant bring myself to defend a steeler even if he deserves it
him and james harrison i can
Although Harrison has some plays you can’t help but call dirty.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 1:14 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
yeah but i love watching harrison play
thats just good old fashioned smack you in the mouth football
good fun to watch
and hurts the steelers i see no down side
for sure
Why can’t we have just one defender people are scared of? Someone needs to play with a mean streak.

hopefully rey will now
that hes in the middle
hopefully
But nobody ever says, you cant run the ball at maualuga, or don’t catch a ball when maualuga is lurking. Hopefully he can be that. Or if Mays can be the hard hitting saftey he was at Usc and make receivers fear going over the middle.

possible pro bowl
if hes not snubbed for being a bengal like whitworth keeps getting
he looks more comfortable there
it fits him so much better
i do to
But that don’t mean he will be feared. I don’t care if he makes the probowl or anything, I just want him to be a mean, intimidating presence! He does seem to have a mean streak, unlike rivers and dahni who just seem way to nice.

Woo!!!!
It’s not that I think Mays is going to be a world beater, but I’m just happy that they are continuing to bring in talent at safety. At worst it adds depth to a really weak position.
wouldnt call him talent
he’s yet to show any instinct at S in an NFL game. college yes, nfl, no.
" I for one, welcome our new Buffalo overlords. " - Whokebe
Love it. I wanted this kid out of the draft. Glad we got him on the cheap (hopefully)
Zimmer will put this kid to work. He’ll shine under Zim unlike his time in San Fran
Another new toy to play with on defense =)!
Say what you want about the organization, but each year they go after what they need to get! The defense got better today!!!
"Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, I then acquire the ability to do it even if I didn't have it in the beginning."
i dont know if they go better
It’s not like Mays is good. He might be under zimmer, but right now we have no reason to assume he’s going to be good. Remember harbaugh played agaisnt him while at Stanford, and still didn’t want him.
by JCompton41 on Aug 22, 2011 8:37 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Zim turned Roy Williams into a Pro Bowler
And I see Mays as a similar type player. Pure physical guy with limitations in coverage. I think he’s a good fit here.
i agree 100%
But I’m just not ready to say he made us better until he shows us something. I do think he’s a great fit, and if anyone can make.him good its zim. He’s better than tom nelson, so I’ll say he has improved our depth but that’s as far as I’ll go for now.

There’s room—oh hell yes there’s room—but I think you’re overselling it a bit.
i disagree...
Safety has been an area of need for some years now and they keep getting guys off the street or low level draft picks to stop gap it. same with the o line. too many WRs drafted recently.

Well, shit happens when you play for the 21st century Bengals and Niners.
Miguel Cairo is so last week.
don't forget the Bills.
He went to the right teams in the wrong decade.
I'm going to assume they gave up a 5th since they get one from NE.
Mays is a prototypical Zimmer guy. Hit Hard and do nothing else.
reggie nelson is a great cover safety and an average tackler. nate is terrible in coverage and a hard hitter. nelson at FS, mays at SS. I can live with that.

i like Nelson in the draft when he came out of Florida
i was excited when we got R Nelson last year for Davey Jones locker, or whatever we dumped on Jacksonville…..whoever it was.
I would be surprised if it's not conditional....
they put him on the trading block three weeks ago and no takers. My guess is it could potentially be a 5th if he plays alot, if he ends up mainly on special teams which you got to figure is where he’s going to be until he understands the system I would say it will end up being a 6th or 7th. Didn’t he come out as a junior ? NFL Countdown had him ranked the 22nd best player coming out of the draft. Has his stock fallen that much ? He’s only 23. He’s younger than alot of this year’s rookies. This was MB’s plan all along. Trick the 49ers into thinking they were going to sign Whitner so they acquire Mays at garage sale price. He’s a genus.
he stayed for his senior year.

by JCompton41 on Aug 22, 2011 8:47 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
They talked about him the year before
But he stayed in school. He was talked about as an early first rounder at that time but slipped his last year in school.
Hopefully Zimmer can put him in roles that play to his strengths. He definitely has highlight reel potential…. for both sides. He’s got to be better than Our current # 4&5 safeties. Maybe #3 as well. He’s not a franchise safety but he’s an upgrade.
He got mad at his former coach
when Seattle picked Thomas in round 1 instead of Mays.
his rookie season had 2 parts
first half he played, ppl talked about him. 2nd half of the season, he was benched, and ppl forgot about him. until this off season when the 49ers made a move at S during FA, then ppl talked about mays again. makes his 1 year career seem longer than it is/was

REGGIE NELSON PLAYS FS.
People get that confused so often and I have no clue why. He sucked at SS. He is built for FS and that’s what he plays. That’s what he will continue to play. Mays plays SS.
Miguel Cairo is so last week.
Mays won't even take Crocker's position...
but he is a great guy to develop and have on special teams.

they need the nets from the arena league
where you can catch the kickoff off the net and then return it
Well...having a former Arena League Coach and Player
as the OC will surely help.
it's like little league football in the 3rd grade when they just start the teams off on the 20 yard line
except that it’s played by adults
NFL should steal another thing from the XFL
and do the SCRUM instead.
its getting out of hand
Did anyone see the raheem Moore hit on the bills receiver that was flagged? If not youtube it. It’s crap!
by JCompton41 on Aug 22, 2011 9:35 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
i hear they are going to 2-hand tap starting next season
and bringing back the ‘in the grasp’ rule where the play if whistled dead once a defensive player touches an offensive player, and the stats like ‘yards after catch’ and ‘broken tackles’ will become obsolete.
i was in an adult flag league
That allowed more contact than the NFL!

Love our society.
“THEY DON’T HIT HARD ENOUGH!” “Player has suffered a severe concussion” “What a wimp! I need some nachos”.
im ok with making it safe for players
But its going to far. Football is a contact sport, these players get paid a lot of money, because they put their bodies in danger for my entertainment. Once you can’t hit a receiver who is jumping for a ball, that’s taking away a lot.
by JCompton41 on Aug 22, 2011 9:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
That was poor
It wasn’t entirely necessary but far from flagrant. He didn’t lower his head or anything. The WR was going down and I think Moore caught him higher than he wanted to. It looked like normal continuation. Unfortunately, people are going to get hurt in this game.
What was the deciding factor in the penalty? Out of bounds/late hit or defenseless ball carrier? That’s a tough one but if it’s the latter it signals that the DBs need to back off when another tackler is engaged. That changes the game and will change the game is the first tackler doesn’t wrap up the ball carrier.
by K312 on Aug 23, 2011 8:03 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
if he can't beat crocker out

Plus, Ed Reed is overrated as a coverage safety. He’s one of the best ball-hawkers of all time, but I know a lot of Ravens fans who complained about how often he got beat by double moves.

I’d pretty much be all over that.

That's too damn logical.
Also! First home game for the Bengals this year? Against SF. They might have sold that one out.
Taylor Mays
Positives:
+Freak Athlete
+Very Aggressive
+Makes Great Plays
Negatives:
+Likes to Drill people w/his shoulder instead of tackle them – does not wrap up!
+Will wiff on tackling people
+Can get lost in coverage
Best use: SS on run support rushing at the RB or blitzing
Worst use: Coverage in passing downs
Only problem i see is that in the 1st 2 preseason games we suck at pass coverage but are pretty stout against the run. After this move, we still pretty much suck at covering people. But nobody will run against us now. We’ll give up 30 rushing yards and 400 passing yards every game :-)
think of it this way
how many 1st or second rounders on d now? howard=2, lawson=1, baby rey=2, hall=1, jones=1, nelson=1, and mays=2…if we could only upgrade our d-line…wait, already good, almost forgot rivers

Round 1 L Hall
Round 1 N Clements
Round 1 A Jones

1 hour ago via TweetCaster for Android
As a Niners fan...im disappointed they would let him go after 1 year!
And he only started a few games, and in his first start had a hell of a game and even a touchdown off special teams
Hope we get at least some value, but knowing the niners FO, a 6th or 7th is to be expected..
Found this interesting...49ers Def-Coord comments after preseason game
(regarding S Reggie Smith) “He’s definitely in the mix there for us at the safety position. We feel good with [S Donte] Whitner, him, [S Dashon] Goldson, [S Madieu] Williams, and [S C.J.] Spillman. We feel like we’ve got five safeties there that can play in the NFL. Some of them have great special teams value over the others, so if we have to keep four, that will be a hard decision. If we keep five, I think they will all be different pieces that we will use during the season.”
They don’t even list Mays as one of their top 5 safeties "who can play in the NFL.
That being said, i’m guessing we got him on the cheap? Or at least i’m hoping.
spillman is garbage, I think mays wanted a chance to start and niners were not going to give it to him so he asked for a trade. mays is clearly better than 2 of those 5 and may end up being better than all of them

as bad as M Brown is...he seems to make some decent trades
FS Reggie Nelson for a practice squad CB
backup RB Brian Leonard for a DT who was going to get cut
QB Ryan Fitzpatrick for a 7th (which turned out to be the year we ended up needing Fitz because Carson got hurt)
backup SS Taylor Mays for a low pick (i’m hoping a low pick)
Now if he can just dump Carson for something. Heck, trade Carson Palmer and throw in lil’ bro in for free.
It seems he has his moments with the bargain bin. There’s plenty of second chances, as most players will only come here as a second choice.

Then you should be thanking the football gods for this.
Mays is the perfect fit for this defense and this division. If you want to beat the Ravens and the “Bitchberg” Steelers, you have to stop Rice and Mendenhal because their offense runs through them.
I don’t care about Mays and his rep as a poor pass defender because he is an upgrade over Crocker and Company.
NOW LETS JUST HOPE THIS TRADE GOES THROUGH
Kenneth Lewis Moore
But Mays fits a Bengals’ defense that needs its safeties to be able to play both strong and free. They find a guy that roamed center field at USC with a big body intriguing and it’s believed they’ll try to get him out there for Thursday’s game at Paul Brown Stadium against the Panthers after what would be only two practices.
Love the pickup
defense keeps getting younger and more athletic. i think he will be better in pass coverage because he wont necessarily be matched man to man as much as he was in san fran. that is our what howard and lawson are for
I’m guessing they gave up a 4th rd pick for Mays
by Bengalsredsvictim on Aug 22, 2011 10:45 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
I doubt it.
Probably a conditional pick starting with a 6th rounder. Chad got a 5th remember.
by BENGALS69 on Aug 22, 2011 10:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
which is why
I honestly believe they passed on Pryor, you can’t afford to lose too many picks in 1 year
Some 49er housekeeping
Buyer beware though. So young and gifted. Zimmer is a damned fine coach so maybe he can find what Harbough and Singletary couldn’t.

Possible linebacker
I would like to see Taylor add a few pounds and see him as a outside backer. I think he would fit nicely.
by StillmissinOdell on Aug 22, 2011 10:48 PM EDT reply actions
no!!!
we NEED him at safety, think bigger more athletic Roy Williams!!! besides as of right now we’re loaded at linebacker
i would like to see him shed a nfl lb at the point of atack. not sure about that
But won’t sell him short either
by DEWITT330 on Aug 22, 2011 10:58 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Not sold
I know its early but I’m not sold on Howard yet. Manny has caught on a lot quicker. I have never been a Rivers fan. He plays too soft for his size. I’m still waitin for him to pop Hines one for that cheap shot, he just don’t have the nastiness.

wow
Alot of good articles tonight without any post! Just goes to show how intrigued we are with this acquisition. Can’t believe I ever lived without this blog. Thanks to everyone that works at this site like its a 9 to 5

love this move
The guy has only been in the NFL for one year and the Niners are already giving up on him? Zimmer is one heck of a coach, and I don’t doubt he’ll develop this kid into something special.
straight from stripe hype
Rumored Undisclosed pick is valued at being a 4th round 2012 Draft pick. It could conditionally be bumped up unto being a 3rd round pick if Mays were to play 80% of the defensive snaps this season
So we play him 79% of the snaps :)

But no really
I like this signing too. Reggie Nelson is showing something here that he never showed in Jacksonville, so as people have mentioned above, Zimmer is bound to get the same results out of Mays

I know there were people who wanted it to be a 6th or 7th rounder
but I think a fourth round pick is a great value for a guy who was a second round pick just one year ago — even if he just ends up being a special teams player and a solid backup.

i wouldnt hate a 4th rounder but
The guy was probably going to be cut if not traded.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 12:14 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
and wouldve signed elsewhere
But of he’s going to get cuz wouldn’t a 6th get him?
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 12:18 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
4th rounder is pushing it, but
I still like it. Either they gave up too much or Zimmer really thinks this kid has got what it takes to be great. And I’d bet on the latter being MB is pretty cheap. Sounds like Zimmer has really got MB’s ear since losing JJ.
He's probably twisting his ear saying
You ARE going to do this

They should be good to go.
But if he did...
another O-line project?

On another note
any of you on twitter and follow Joe Reedy? He does 20 questions in the evening. I thought this one was great.
3. RT GregWiesemann "joereedy: OK, let’s do 20 questions" am I crazy to say Bengals go 10-6 this season?>Whatever drugs you’re on, I want
While I am optimistic that we won’t be drafting Luck next year, I don’t have much hope for a season like 10-6. Anything is possible but not likely. Anyway, just wanted to share a laugh.

side note
has anyone heard about the kids in the supplemental draft not taken, I know Pryor was the only one drafted
Caleb King
georgias RB signed with the Vikes
macadoo
the de from N.C. signed with the ravens
I would love to see
the bengals give him a shot. Hell if they wanna give bennett a chance I deserve a shot for that matter. But i think we should bring him in for a look
they'll be fine
once Adam Jones gets back, Bennet is not gonna make the team and Tom Nelson should be cut too, but I can’t figure why they haven’t brought back Chinny
I dont think chinny wants to come back yet
he said he wants to heal his injury before even attempting to sign with a team so im guessing hes just not ready to begin talks yet. I could be wrong but id like to see him back as well.
he wont now
With gibrel, crocker, Mays, sands, nelson that’s the 5 safteys.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 1:11 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
not crocker
and it would be pointless to switch one safety coming of injury for another safety coming off injury
crockers very underrated
He’s played well when healthy.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 1:39 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
gibrel is more coverage
Chinny is like Mays and sands as a run stopper. Gibrel gives us a vet that can cover a little bit more.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 1:39 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
jones needs to hurry
even thugh its preseason i just cringe everytime i see bennett attempt to make a play. hes the defensive version of nate livings
Now all that's left is trading Palmer.
Yeah, I know…enough is enough. But I’d call it one heck of an offseason if that were to happen. At this point we know Carson will never play for the Bengals again. So maybe MB is just holding out a little so Carson doesn’t have any time to get adjusted to a new team with a different system (Miami). Miami is looking pretty desperate for a QB and might still be willing to offer a couple draft picks for Carson. Just sayin. Too hopeful? Most likely.
even with a restructured deal...
that’s alot of money to pay a day to start a couple games and sit him. Palmer’s best bet is to hope someone loses a starter pretty soon and don’t have backup options.
Carson's best hope
is that MB unsticks his head out of his ass.
by TCfromDubVee on Aug 23, 2011 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions
wait till next offseason
They have no reason to trade him before then.
by JCompton41 on Aug 23, 2011 12:51 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
plenty of reason
his value for one. There are a few good QBs in next year’s draft that will eliminate need for some teams unlike this year where teams like Miami, Oakland, Seattle still have need for a QB. And let’s not forget headache of hearing “he said this” and having him somehow still remain a topic of conversation that no one wants. Gruden was asked just the other day if he thought CP was coming back. Bengals have to move on, but if he’s still out there in limbo then it will always be a distracting topic.
I like how we are putting the usc defense back together
rivers reyrey mays rucker (even though he was a little before them). Mays should do better here because he knows how to play with rey and keith. Plus he knows how to play with nate and manny
Mays seems like a good kid with a solid attitude, hard working and all that too.
Hope he works out for you all… and Manny.
Clements should worry you though against certain types of WR’s. If teams have more than one speedster, Zimmer better take him completely off the field for those plays; even if it is some kind of zone. I would bet my last dollar that he will frustrate you in some games. Consistency in coverage has been an issue because of age and loss of speed. He will own the slower WR’s though.
Lord knows you all have given up some pretty valuable players to us over recent years, so I hope it all works out…Except against us early on ;)

Like the signing for a couple of reasons
1. Nelson was a beast and an all-pro with the Jags when he was allowed to roam and pick off passes. Mays is a beast against the run, giving Zimmer that run stuffing SS while allowing his FS to roam.
2. Mays could play OLB in passing situations, giving us more speed and pass rushing up front while still having someone who can jam a TE.
3. Mays allows the Bengals to be able to use Crocker at nickle in certain situations.
4. Mays gives us quality depth, which is something we have lacked over the years at a position where we can’t seem to keep guys healthy.
5. It allows us to send Bennett packing for the UFL, b/c frankly, Crocker is a better CB than Bennett.
6. The Bengals secondary was fun to watch when David Fulcher was coming up to destroy people. Now we have a guy in that same mold with arguable more athletic ability.
7. WR’s don’t like to get hit when coming across the middle and now we have 2 guys (Rey and Mays) who will knock their head off. That causes alligator arms and makes WR’s timid. We haven’t had that in awhile.
As much as I would like to see Bennett go, I think he still hangs around until Jones is back on the field and shows he is healthy. I would expect to see Gibril Wilson cut b/c of this move.
Good points all around.
We needed this help at the D back, so getting a hard-hittin safety is good news.
Sure. Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
agree...
…the good news is he isn’t pressed into and every down starter, we can use him for his talents, and still develop him. I don’t know about the whole OLB thing, but using him on the safety blitz in passing situations makes a ton of sense.
Reggie Nelson can lay the wood too..
Give pizza chants.

If it's a conditional 4th round pick then this was a really good move.
I was assuming we gave up the extra 3rd rounder we got for Chad, which this would I guess turn into if he plays the snaps – but I doubt he’ll get 80% of the snaps. I don’t think anyone gets 80% of the snaps in Zimmer’s defense except maybe the MLB.
Still, you have to be a little wary of why Harbaugh was so quick to dump him. He was a borderline 1st round pick last year. What were they expecting to see in one year of limited playing time? Makes me think he might have been a loafer in practice. Still, you’d think he’d be happy to team back up with Rey and Rivers. If anyone can get him fired up you’d think it would be Rey. Plus if he was slacking off this would be a pretty good wake up call…no one wants to be traded to the Bengals. If he comes around and plays to his potential then we have our SS of the future and basically got him for free. Can’t complain about that.
