Locking Four Players Into Our 2011 Roster Prediction: Frostee Rucker, Kelly Jennings, Dan Skuta, Robert Sands
Steam rolls out from our beakers, flames from our bunsen burners and somewhere in our laboratory the actual sound of (Muhaha) echoes throughout dullness of thick ceramic walls. Lightning strikes during a cloudless sky silhouetted behind a pasty glow of a full moon. Lab coats full of notes and leaky pens, scrambles to put together the perfect list. A predicted roster of players locked into a job when the league requires teams to reduce their roster to 53 players.
So what have come up with?
#38: Frostee Rucker (DT/DE): The Bengals have long liked Frostee Rucker, taking him as the ninth defensive linemen before the 53-man roster -- which at the time was a slight surprise. Benefiting Rucker, much like Fanene, is the team's likelihood of taking three defensive tackles into the regular season, needing guys like Rucker and Fanene to rotate inside on obvious passing situations when Sims and Peko take breathers.
#39: Kelly Jennings (CB): The Bengals have obvious concerns with Adam Jones' (neck) rehabilitation and Morgan Trent's knee (the same knee that forced Cincinnati to rework his contract, protecting themselves from it). Along with Marvin Lewis' praise for a guy that can take 500-600 snaps a season, it's a safe bet that Jennings was locked in as soon as the trade was made.
#40: Dan Skuta (MLB): Unfortunately we can't expect Rey Maualuga to take every defensive snap in 2011. He needs a backup and Skuta has been particularly strong against the run this preseason. Through three games, Skuta, also a heavy special teams contributor, leads the team with 14 total tackles.
#41: Robert Sands (FS): The fifth-round draft pick during the 2011 NFL Draft is only our third safety locked in. This position needs bodies. Badly. We could actually foresee a scenario in which the Bengals take 11 defensive backs loaded with safeties, much like they did in 2007.
Our updated Roster Locks.

Running Back (3): Cedric Benson, Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard

Wide Receiver (4): A.J. Green, Jerome Simpson, Jordan Shipley, Andre Caldwell

Dennis Roland's been a whipping boy around this site, but I don't see how he isn't a lock.
With Andre Smith appearing injury prone, Roland is indispensible. I’m also big on keeping Jason Shirley. He appears ready to start producing as a run stuffer.
The only way that Dennis Roland is playing football for the Bengals is if he walks up to Mikey Brown’s office and says he’ll donate his years salary back to Brown. Mike gets his money, Roland gets his undeserved roster spot, and the fans have to watch him give up quarterback pressure after quarterback pressure. So if he does make the squad then yes, he will be laughing last.
Anthony Collins can back up RT
And he’s much better than Roland.

Like Shirley too
I think they can pick up someone better than Roland after the cuts.

Sands is a lock ahead of Mays
Didn’t expect that.
yeah, I'm not sure about that either.
Why keep Sands around as a project when you have Taylor Mays?

because mays is a project too.
I think both make it.

im excited about our safety depth
reggie mays and sands are all rangy fast big hitters and their young. crocker adds some experience i like it i dont know that its our biggest weakness anymore
Sands still hesitates but thats to be expected from a rookie. The way that Bengals.com article reads I think they’re keeping Rico Murray also.
thought about it often - wilson and ghee could be in trouble without a big week #4
the bengals taking 11 dbs seems the only answer (really 12 counting jones on pup)
opening day: Reggie Nelson, Chris Crocker , Taylor Mays, Leon Hall, Nate Clements, Kelly Jennings, Morgan Trent, Robert Sands, Rico Murray
Pup: Adam Jones
Pick 2 flush the rest (or practice squad for those with eligibility ):
Brandon Ghee, Jonathan Wade, David Pender, Korey Lindsey, Gibril Wilson, Jeromy Miles.

What jeromy miles does on special teams (and the way he looks in games)
Makes me think he also has a shot… And maybe Murray holds as the 5th corner

I'd hate to see him go as well.
I think he can ultimately be a decent player and he has looked good in games this year.

Sands
I’m curious. What is so great about Sands? I have a highlight video of his loaded to watch but I haven’t noticed him in the preseason games. He hasn’t stood out to me yet. Although I have seen Miles flying all over the field, but nobody talks about him (granted he’s not a rookie). I’m not bashing on Sands or anything, I just honestly do not know so I’m asking.
But now I’m going to watch that highlight video, and maybe I’ll have to watch the preseason games again and specifically look for him.

Ok I watched the highlight video and am convinced
as long as he starts playing like that here!
