Bengals Sign Former Tennessee Titans Tight End Bo Scaife

The Cincinnati Bengals officially signed tight end Bo Scaife to a one-year contract worth $1 million By officially signed, we mean that the team announced it, signature on paper and no chance for San Francisco to emerge from the dankest corners of Cincinnati to capture another player that already agreed to terms with the Bengals.

What Bengals like about newly signed TE Bo Scaife: Good receiver and blocker. Very athletic. Excellent route runner. Leader in Tennesseless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Hobson points out that the Bengals like many attributes in Scaife that they had in Reggie Kelly, providing "leadership for" a young group. Scaife visited the Bengals earlier this week with reports that the St. Louis Rams were also interested.

To make room on the roster, the Bengals waived offensive lineman Ryan McKnight.

We're not sure what this means for tight end Chase Coffman. It's entirely possible that a guy like Jay Gruden is inventive enough to include Coffman in a variety of packages during double-TE formations with Jermaine Gresham. Or not. We'll find out for sure one way or the other.

Kind of irrelevant given we have at least 2 young talented guys at TE.

The Patriots used..

Alge Crumpler, Aaron Hernandez, and Rob Gronkowski very very effectively. Personnel packages that fit certain situations, you may not be familiar with the concept after years of Brat.

But I think Jay Gruden can hack it

If we want to be the best, we gotta be like the best. The best TE combo we’ve seen in a while was NE’s last year. Gronkowski and Gresham have a lot of similarities, as do Hernandez and Coffman, though Gresham and Hernandez are better than the counterparts. Scaife is a big experienced blocker like Crumpler, so we’ll see what Gruden makes of him.

Agree with this! In Jay we trust

I can more than live with a TE trio of Jermaine, Bo, and Chase.

If anything, Bo’s addition and inclusion in the lineup will keep defenses guessing. It was a dead give away last season when Reggie Kelly was in the game: either an off tackle run, or Kelly would run a simple 3-yard out route (or 5 yard curl) if it were a pass play.

Can’t fault the Bengals for upgrading here. As Josh points out, Bo is markedly better than Garret Mills.

by The_Black_Stripes on Aug 5, 2011 2:36 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

let's wait and see if Coffman does anything for Gruden..

before we write off the TE position as completely full. With Gresham and Scaife, there’s no doubt at all that Coffman is that nobody #3, not Scaife. Maybe he is another of those guys that inexplicably sat on the sidelines most of the year (like Mathis, Collins, Dunlap, Atkins, etc) but unlike those guys he’s never produced anything notable on the football field in the NFL. Not even for a few plays.

I’m just glad to see solid NFL-caliber players being brought in.

They spent 2 years turning Coffman into a in-line TE. He and Scaife may both be TEs, but they do not play the same position. I don’t see Scaife as a real threat to Chase.

Definitely

Isn’t it better to have three different but talented tight ends than to have one starter and two career backups?

Coffman?

Any reports on how Coffman is doing in camp? I understand the need for veteran leadership but I also can’t help but wonder what this means for Chase.

He started off on the active roster, then inactive, then practice squad. Not exactly the trajectory one would hope for.

We also have Garrett Mills, a FB//TE hybrid.

Save that beef.

The Scaife signing is small potatoes and is a done deal. No reason it should impact any other moves they might be considering, including Safeties. In other words, if they don’t sign another safety, it won’t be because Bo Scaife is on the roster.

by sofakingood on Aug 5, 2011 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

Like the signing

He has very good hands and can be a threat after the catch. He’s lost ALOT of speed and never has been a capable blocker. I figured they’d look for a blocking TE but instead went for a guy who helps in passing game. Also hurts Coffman’s progression.

He isnt very good at all. He can manage because hes a vet, but Gresham is probably the best blocking TE on the 53 man roster as of now.

by jimbasa on Aug 5, 2011 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Any team can always use a "good player" whether it's in a "position of need" or not.

The Bengals need professionals from other winning organizations. Last year they had Gresham, Coffman and Kelly. Obviously, they’re not going to bring back Reggie Kelly and I’ll assume they’re keeping 3 TE’s. I’d argue that Scaife, who would be replacing Kelly, is an upgrade at the other TE spot.

by Anthony Cosenza on Aug 5, 2011 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

…for 1 year and not much more than the vet minimum you can satisfy a want rather than fill a need.

by virginiastripes on Aug 5, 2011 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

I like this move if he is just a veteran presence at the #3 TE spot. If he cuts into Chase’s snaps, I’m not so sure I like it.

Give pizza chants.

Not a fan...

I know Scaife is a good player, so adding depth is no problem. But I want Marvin Lewis to just let the Young Guys play at this point. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Coffman and Gresham during training camp… not sure why we needed another TE

by The Dealio on Aug 5, 2011 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

so if i'm a TE in camp not named Gresham, Scaife or Coffman...

…i’m packing my bags asap and looking for another training camp to join, becuase the battle for the 3rd TE spot seems officially closed.

unless this means that Coffman isn’t very secure in his job?

Remember a couple years ago..........

Kelly and Utecht both go down…………we’re left with………..D. Coates. No problem with a little depth here. I know we need pieces elsewhere, but there’s only so much left out there right now.

Scaife's got a better CV

No harm having experience across the roster
If you’re looking at the Bengals having 3 TEs, then Gresham, Coffman and Scaife’s as good a set as you’re going to find.

by wiseking on Aug 5, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Lot’s of youth at WR and TE. Lot’s of talent too, but they are young. Good veteran presence for cheap.

by Cedric Benson Boat Party on Aug 5, 2011 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe 4

Is it possible they keep 4 TEs and only 5 wrs. Would have been out of the question under Brat, but under Gruden’s system who knows?

by virginiastripes on Aug 5, 2011 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

have to kind of agree

I don’t see the need in signing Bo, even though I think he’s a great tight end. I thought I read somewhere in a previous post that Coffman was really shining, so I don’t really understand picking up a TE of Scaife’s caliber. Surely he will be a starter?

by Caleb Burch on Aug 5, 2011 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

No

He will replace Reggie Kelly. I’m sure they’ll rotate the 3 TEs of Gresham, Scaife and Coffman in how they like.

by Anthony Cosenza on Aug 5, 2011 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

yep.

I’m in favor of giving Jay Gruden as many toys as possible. Don’t know what he’ll be like as OC, but he almost assuredly (by default) will be better and more creative than Brat was since 2007 (that’s when it seemed like the offense had become stagnant).

by The_Black_Stripes on Aug 5, 2011 2:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

good points

I guess Im still thinking of Brat’s system where this would kind of seem like a waste. Either way I like the pickup

by Caleb Burch on Aug 5, 2011 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Scaife is more of an H-back than a traditional TE. Different than either Gresham or Coffman. No question he can catch the ball. He could help a lot with our inexperienced QBs as well as the other TEs.. Not a big signing. And not a starter. Scaife is not like any other TE on the roster. Even the young guys-Nalbone and Cochart- are more traditional inline types. Interesting. But for only 1 year and barely above the league minimum, there’s no risk.

We would have prayed just to have a real TE on the team with all the injury concerns. I legit pick up. Never too many good role players. I think we need trust that Gruden knows what he needs.

by Hudepohl Dey on Aug 5, 2011 3:17 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Yes and no

I think the old CBA had the “undressed” 46th man as the 3rd string QB who could only be used in certain circumstances. So unless we keep only 2 QBs on active roster, the change to 46 is irrelevant.

by the-dude on Aug 5, 2011 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Gresham is still out man.. he can be 2nd string

Let Greshman play.. hes younger and more versatile…Scaife can mentor him !!

by Ant Mormando on Aug 5, 2011 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

as a former titans fan...

I really like this move. the guy always seems to get the necessary catches and makes plays. he’s definitely a good veteran to have….Tennessee always seems to have excellent tight ends that can catch and block and scaife fits the bill from what’s I’ve seen in game film….don’t care what pff says, he can block and be an excellent backup.

by ddbumpus on Aug 5, 2011 9:12 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

We're gonna be in the leading edge of the multi-TE wave.

The Pats did it last year and the Rams and Bengals will likely follow suit this year, running two and three tight ends a significant percentage of the time.

If we run Gresham, Coffman, Scaife and Green in a 3-TE ace formation 10 times a game and put them in a 4 WR set randomly, you would just mess with DC’s head. The TEs on the right and Green on the left, Benson in the back field… 1st and goal inside the 5. You gonna double Green and not really run your goal-line package, or are you gonna run your package and hope that your best CB can win the jump ball with AJ?
